The Newsletter of Hosanna Lutheran Church
From the Pastor …
I have always seen October as Lutheran
Heritage month. It is not just a time to
celebrate our past, but to refocus on our
future as Lutheran Christians. What does it
mean to be a Lutheran Christian? Above all
things we Lutheran Christians hold that we
are saved by grace through faith alone…just
as St. Paul writes in Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by
grace you have been saved through faith, and
this is not your own doing; it is the gift of
God—not the result of works, so that no one
may boast”
Even more unique about us is how we
interpret that scripture differently from our
fellow Christians…In that we believe one
does not need to go up to God in order to
meet the Almighty and be blessed by God,
but that Jesus comes down and meets us
where we are at. This is different from other
Christian denominations…it’s what Luther
called a theology of the Cross instead of a
theology of Glory which is very common
outside of Lutheran Christianity. It is also not
an easy thing to understand, because we
naturally lean toward the theology of Glory.
Here are some examples of the differences
between the two:

A “theology of Glory” is based on nothing
more than individual wishes, and tries to
use the cross as a starting point for
personal gain—to make yourself healthy
and wealthy, successful and popular.
A “theology of the Cross,” in contrast,
thinks of the cross as the last stop for sin,
death, and delusions of grandeur. Hence,
the cross is an end point, not a starting
point.
A “theology of Glory” says: “Accept Jesus
Christ as your personal Lord and Savior
and he will make you happier, richer, and
better looking.” If things don’t happen that
way it is because you need to have a
greater faith, believe more, or try harder.
A “theology of the Cross” emphasizes what
Jesus did for us already. In baptism, for
example, Jesus gives you His word, which
essentially says, “You are mine,” even
when you feel troubled, poor, or
unattractive.
One who has a “theology of Glory” thinks
that God shows up where humans expect
God to show up: in things that are
powerful, wise, and important by human
standards.
One who has a “theology of the Cross”
knows that God is much subtler: God
shows up in those things that seem weak,
foolish, and insignificant to human eyes.

In regards to the stewardship of our
resources God has given us (time, talent,
treasure): This means our gifts are a
response to God’s upfront love for us, and not
a demand from Him. Our church doesn’t
demand your yearly tax returns in order to
require what you owe God in return for his
love, because we see this as contrary to the
heart of our theology…in that God’s love is
FREE! On the other hand, we are a church
that knows that one’s life will be changed
when we truly have faith in God’s grace, and
therefore we will want to give back to God as
much as we can of our resources to support
God’s mission. This is because we realize we
love God back by loving others, and that love
for others includes supporting the church in its
efforts to share God’s love with these others.
Hosanna Lutheran Church is a warm and
friendly place! A place where modern
disciples of Jesus equip themselves to share
God’s love and shine His light in a world full of
darkness. I pray that God will continue to
bless this congregation through your efforts to
support our mission to be “Ambassadors for
Christ”, locally, nationally and globally!

Altar Guild will be meeting
Monday, October 14th at 7 PM in the
classroom at the church. Altar Guild would
welcome all those who would like to assist us
in making the congregation's worship
experience more meaningful. Our duties
consist of being responsible each week for
the care of the sanctuary which includes the
paraments, linens, communion ware and all
other items needed or used during our
worship services. Each member serves six to
eight times each year.
Other areas to serve would be to assist in
the making and maintaining paraments and
linens or by creating banners.

The title of this study is “Stepping Up –
a journey through the Psalms of Ascent”.
We will be exploring Psalms 120-134. We will
be gaining a new appreciation for the life of
faith as a journey to greater fellowship with
and worship of God.
The workbook for this session will be
$15. If you would like to do the study but
funds a tight right now, arrangements can be
made. Don’t let that stop you for “Stepping
Up” to faith.
Please let me know if you would like to
attend this study so I can order enough books
for everyone. Also if you have any questions,

MORNING STAR BIBLE STUDY
The Morning Star bible study will meet on
Thurs., Oct. 17th, at 10 a.m., at Roberta
Penwell's, 13013 Saylor Rd. We will continue
our study in Book 33, Lesson I, Part III &
IV. We are saved by faith in Christ's finished
work of the cross, not by works of the
law. The Apostle Paul calls the law a "yoke of
bondage" and that we are under grace, not
law. Gal. 2:15-16 "...we have believed in
Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the
faithfulness of Jesus Christ, and not by the
works of the law, for by the works of the law
shall no flesh be justified." Being justified
means "just as if we'd never sinned." That's
how God sees us as He saw Adam before sin
entered the world. Let us not take our faith
lightly!

ADULT MINISTRIES
Fall Study Opportunities
New course offerings began September 12th
—it’s not to late to join in!
Pastor Bret is leading the study The Divine
Drama on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30
p.m.
Fred Kaufman is leading a study on
“Discovering Our Spiritual Gifts” during the
Sunday school hour in the double classroom
on the east end of the building. This study
will go through October 20th and will be
followed by a study led by Sandy Bricker on
“God’s Promises Regarding the Roles of the
Holy Spirit in our Lives”. During Advent, a
study entitled Journey to Bethlehem will be
held during Sunday school.
Please prayerfully consider coming and
growing in your faith journey with your
Christian brothers and sisters. What a gift it is
to us to be able to do so!!

GATHER FOR FAITH IN ACTION
The New 9-month series of studies is
titled In Good Company: Stories of Biblical
Women. As we meet October 9th at the
home of Jane Starn, 31 Jefferson Ct. (10:0011:45) we will be studying about “Deborah, A
Determined Leader.” Deborah, a judge in
Israel, is persuaded by Barak to lead 10,000
soldiers into battle. Come and join with us!
NEW BETH MOORE BIBLE STUDY
September 30 – November 11
10:00am – 11:30am OR 6:30pm – 8:00pm
Where has the time gone? It’s
September and the kids are back in school,
schedules are being made and time is
running short. BUT now is the time to think of
starting something for you so you are able to
take care of others. A new Beth Moore study
will be starting the end of the month. It is a
shorter seven week course which will be
offered once again on Mondays.

Reformation Sunday is Sunday Oct. 27th.
Reformation Sunday is celebrated in
remembrance of the Reformation. The
liturgical color of the day is red, which
represents the Holy Spirit and the Martyrs of
the Christian Church. The fact that
Reformation Day coincides with Halloween
may not be mere coincidence. Halloween,
being the Eve of All Saints' Day might have
been an entirely appropriate day for Luther to
post his 95 Theses against indulgences since
the castle church would be open on All Saints'
Day specifically for people to view a large
collection of relics. By the end of the
seventeenth century, many Lutheran
churches celebrated a festival
commemorating Martin Luther's posting of the
Ninety-five Theses, a summary of abuses in
the church of his time. At the heart of the
reform movement was the gospel, the good
news that it is by grace through faith that we
are justified and set free. Come join us for
this important celebration of the Lutheran
church!
BETH MOORE CONFERENCE
7 of us just returned from attending a
Beth Moore conference in Charleston, WV. It
was amazing, and talk has already begun
regarding attending another conference in
September 2014. To hear what the
experience was like, talk to Dianne
Drozdowicz, Julie Weinzierl, Rhea Mathias,
Cindy Kaufman, Becki Stockdale, Lynn Cross,
or Sandy Bricker.
Maybe you’ll want to think about joining us
next year in Ft. Wayne IN!!!!
Coat Donations: Thirty-seven coats were
delivered to the Leads Center for distribution
to members of the community. They will be a
tremendous addition to their coat give away
in December. We are off to a terrific start!
Check out your closets and keep up the good
work!

the narthex). The Leads center is most
appreciative of all the coats that are donated.

FAITH ON 8TH
Hosanna is scheduled to serve at the Faith on
8th Men's shelter on Sunday, November 3rd.
We are looking for volunteers to donate
cooked meat loaves, which will be reheated
at church. We also need help with making the
mashed potatoes at church. Bread, cookies,
and gallons of milk are also needed to
complete the meal. People are also needed
to transport and serve the meal at the shelter
downtown. Sign-up sheets will be posted
starting Sunday, October 13th. The Hosanna
meal is the favorite at the shelter. Your help is
very much appreciated!
HOSANNA PIECEMAKERS
One hundred and forty pillowcase dresses for
"little girls around the world" were delivered to
the drop-off site in MI on Sept. 26th. A BIG
thank you to all you sewed, provided
pillowcases, and all the trimmings....they were
beautiful. This project will continue through
the winter. There is a container in the narthex
to pick up a "kit" to put together or just a
pillowcase and use from your own stash to
finish a dress. If you have any questions, call
Darlene Butler 740-964-1411
Tying quilts for several charities will
continue on Oct. 8th & 22nd at 9:30 in
Darlene's basement. Quilts for Lutheran
World Relief along with wrapped bars of soap
will be delivered to the drop off site in
Whitehall on Oct. 4th. Hope you had a
chance to see the display of quilts at church
on Sept. 22nd. I'll give a count in the
November newsletter and hope we met our
goal of a 25% increase to LWR as they
requested this year. The need is very great!
Many men, women, and children will be
warmed by the love of this sewing group who
even met once a week in Sept. to increase
our numbers. If you wish to sew at home and
need fabric, see Darlene for a supply to make
a quilt top 60" x 80".

HIGH ROPES COURSE
JR and SR LYO will be going to Walnut Bluffs
(8111 Schott Rd. Westerville, OH 43068) on
October 6th from 1:30-5:30 p.m. for a High
Ropes course. The group will leave after
second service and stop at a fast food
restaurant for lunch on the way. Students
should bring their own money for lunch.

All participants, students and adults, must pay
if they are doing the high ropes. The cost is
$20 per person. Youth Committee will pay
the balance.
Trunk or Treat will only be open from 4:305:30 p.m. but the rest of the festivities will
continue till 7:00 p.m.
There will be Event Parking at Hosanna
House (next door to the church)
All participants are trained on the ground with
clips and ropes. No one goes off the ground
until they PASS the training. All participants
are spotted by another person when changing
clips. The spotter MUST be over 16 years
old, but each person actually changes their
own clip. Summit Vision has staff provided
for assistance for the groups: 1 staff per five
participants. We also need chaperones for
this event.
So invite your friends and neighbors and don’t
forget to wear your costume!
This is a free event but we encourage each
child to bring a canned food donation for
“admission”. Please note that you are
welcome to come and just enjoy the festivities
but if you would like to pass out candy, please
sign up ahead of time [email protected] (One adult will need to stay at
the car from 4:30-5:30 and plan to bring
enough candy for at least 200 kids. Families
passing out candy need to park in Hosanna’s
church parking lot).

OFF AND BON FIRE!
Bring your appetites to Hosanna Nov 8th at
6:30-The Chili cook off is the one time it is
okay to be judgmental! That’s right, bring
your chili and your opinions. Chili cookers will
submit their chili for tasting and voting on at
6:30.
Non cookers please bring a dessert or
something to cook at the bon fire, where we
will adjourn after the chili winner is chosen.
Make sure to invite your family and friends
and bring a lawn chair for the fire. We will
supply punch and you may BYOB anything a
bit more “Robust”

YOUTH COMMITTEE NEWS
New Beginnings: Once again – glee rang
forth from the young lady who accepted your
donations! The coffee and baby food
received a clapping of hands! – Hosanna
came through once again! We had 11 bags
of donations this time! Thank you ever so
much, your New Beginning representative.
Sunday school classes started on
September 15. If you missed signing up and
still want to join, just find your child's class
between services. It's never too late! The
pre-school and elementary classes are
currently in a unit on Creation.
Food Panty: A big thank you for the 100+
food items donated to the Food Pantry
Thank you for the generous donations of the
10 jars of peanut butter… and two big jars of
jelly, hearty soups (which can be made into a
meal for 4+ w/rice or noodles!) a generous
donation of baby food and newborn baby
formula; and so much more! With school
starting the funds are running low again for
food to stock the Food Pantry shelves… your
generous donations are a welcome relief.
Your giving will insure that many children
within the Pataskala and surrounding areas
will be well fed. Thank you! Your food pantry
representatives
Youth Sunday School will be collecting
offerings for the Heifer International fund
through December. The congregation will be
asked for contributions on the 4th Sunday of
each month September through December.
The animal(s) will be chosen at that time and
the "gift" presented at one of our Christmas
Eve services.
Catechism/Promise Keepers The
catechism program has begun once again
this fall. The students had their first class
on September 15th. Pastor Bret is teaching
Luther’s Small Catechism while Cathy and
Jeff Konkler are assisting as discussion
leaders.
1st Year Students: Tommy Hoskinson, Trey
Howell, Abby Rizzo and Katie Siebert.
2nd Year Students: Kirsten Gwilym, Seth
Newland, Aubry Pletcher-Abram, Jack Pugh,
Ben Rizzo and Olivia Teague.
3rd Year Students: Bryce Bulderbergs,
Michael Cisar, Daniel King, Tanner Mull and
Judah Stewart.
1st and 2nd year students attend catechism
class, church and Sunday school as well as
participate in church activities for service
projects.
3rd year or Internship students attend Sunday
school and worship services along with
working on committees and other ministries in
the church. This is part of their growth and
learning how the church functions as they
confirmed members of Hosanna.
Our 3rd year students will focus on the

lives. Bryce is an avid soccer player. Bryce
has been active in many areas of the church.
He has chosen to work with Altar Guild,
Fellowship Committee and Youth Committee
this year. Bryce has already attended Kids’
Klub on Sunday evenings where he helps
with the preschool class. He is very good
with our little ones. He has two older
brothers, Ryan and Phillip, and his parents
are Erike and Rachel Bulderbergs. The
Bulderberg family attends our contemporary
service.
Jarod Carr is the son of Becky and Jason
Carr. He has a younger sister Shelby. Jarrod
has attended class for two years and
completed his 3rd year of internship. He was
active in the Fellowship and Worship
Committees as well as volunteering with
youth. Jarrod has helped with many youth
events including Rally Day since his mom and
Aunt Carole McGonigal were the Sunday
School Co-superintendents. He has been
working in the background by cleaning SS
cabinets and helping with the supplies.
Jarrod has also been assisting at the Easter
Egg Hunt, Kids’ Klub and Vacation Bible
School. Jarrod loves to play basketball. The
Carr family attends the contemporary service.
These students will be needing mentoring
from Hosanna members as well as all
committee chairs to experience a rewarding
year of ministry during their final year of
catechism. We promise these things at their
Baptism and Confirmation “with God’s
Help and Guidance.”
All students and parents attended an
orientation meeting where they received their
folders containing the calendar for the year,
acolyte schedule along with forms that need
to be completed.

Catechism Advisory Board
Abbi Eckman has completed two years of
classes and one year of internship. She is
the daughter of Jim and Beth Eckman. She
has a younger brother, Andrew, and sister,
Ava. Abbi’s grandparents are Bobbi and Bill
Cady, longtime Hosanna members. They all
attend first service. Abbi has been very active
at Hosanna helping with Vacation Bible
School, Kids’ Klub, and the Easter Egg Hunt.
She enjoys working with crafts and little
children. Abbi also worked on Fellowship
Committee and learned about Altar Guild this
year with their ministry. Abbi enjoys Cross
Country at Watkins.
OUR CONFIMANTS
The following students were confirmed on
Sunday, September 29th at the 10 a.m. Unity
Service. The Confirmation date has been
changed to the last week of September to
ensure that our confirmed members start right
away as active members of Hosanna. In
September, we started a new season of youth
groups, bible studies and other ministries,
while in May, we tend to disappear into the
summer months, vacation and other activities.
The September confirmation date ensures
that our students are being confirmed into an
active church.
Savannah Hawker is the daughter of Keven
and Tonya Norman. She has several siblings
including Jacob Hawker, Brittasha King, and
Cassie Norman. Savannah is a very talented
artist and made many of the youth flyers in
the past few years. She sings with the Praise
band at the second service almost every
Sunday too. She helped with Vacation Bible
School, Rally Day and the Easter Egg Hunt at
Bryce Bulderbergs is currently in the 8th
grade and will complete his internship in May
of 2014. Bryce and his family are planning to
leave the area and move to Texas next year.
He is being confirmed in May so that his
catechism requirements and confirmation are
completed before this big change in their

Hosanna. Savannah worked with the Care
and Worship Committees, and Altar Guild, at
Christmas helping with the paraments and
their ministry. She is a regular volunteer at
her mom’s workplace, Echo Manor Nursing
Center, where she assists with residents and
helps out as needed. Savannah has
completed all her requirements for catechism
for three years.
heard of this, Kate was suggested and
enrolled in the Faith Trek program. Katie
participated in Faith Trek since February of
this year with her mentor, Jim Southard. She
took a trip with other youth to Wisconsin this
summer as well as a couple of retreats with
many youth. Katie has been regularly
reading out lessons on Sundays now. She
wants to work with the prayer team, too.
Katie volunteered every Sunday from
September to December last year at Kids’
Klub. She and her sister Kelsey helped with
games each Sunday evening. Katie worked
with Worship and Altar Guild where she
acquired more knowledge about the sacristy
and many aspects of worship in Hosanna.
Katie was active with Vacation Bible School,
the Easter Egg Hunt and many other areas of
ministry. She has a good start for her career.
Nate McLeod is the youngest son of Fred
and Sue McLeod. The other family members
are Alex, Timmy, Kellie and Kristy. They all
attend the first service. Nate has been very
active in Hosanna events. He is a regular at
Kids’ Klub where he assists with crafts and
working with the children. Nate always
volunteers for the Easter Egg Hunt, Vacation
Bible School, and Date Night/Overnights for
Kids’ Klub. He enjoys being in the sound
booth learning with the adult supervisor on
Sunday mornings. Nate has participated in
Worship and Fellowship Committees during
his internship year of catechism. He is a
regular at church and Sunday school classes.
Nate has enjoyed playing his trombone for
special services at Hosanna. He has been on
a swim team and enjoys participating in the
Special Olympics.
Kelsey Stanley is the oldest daughter of
Evelyn Heskett and Mike Stanley. Kelsey
also volunteered and helped with Kids’ Klub
every Sunday for the first semester of last
school year. Kelsey and her sister, Katie,
planned games and assisted their mom with
these activities at Kids’ Klub. Kelsey was also
actively assisting with groups at Vacation
Bible School. She enjoys working with little
children. Kelsey and Katie helped with
communion prep several times last year too.
Kelsey and Katie earned many points with
their Sunday school and church attendance
as well as many service projects. The
Stanley girls along with their mom attend the
first service at Hosanna. Kelsey and her
family live in the Granville School District.
Triston Rhoades attended St. Pius for a
couple of years so received his catechism
studies every day at school. This past year,
he took the catechism classes for Lutheran
education. He also completed a year of
internship where he worked on Hosanna
House events with the Hosanna House event
planners. Triston worked on Altar Guild for
many years helping his Grandma, Terrie
Baker with the Hanging of the Greens,
paraments and other various duties. He was
active in helping Care Committee and working
in conjunction with Leads of Licking County.
He also chose Worship as an area of ministry
to work in this year. Triston helped with the
Seder Meal on Palm Sunday. He has a
sister, Shai and his mom is Angel Rhoades.
Triston lives with his grandparents, Terrie and
John Baker in Beechwood Trails. They
attend the traditional service at Hosanna.
Amanda Teague is the daughter of Bob and
Amy Teague. She has a younger sister,
Olivia, who is also in the catechism program.
Amanda and her family attend the
contemporary service. Amanda has
completed many service projects achieving
numerous points for her hard work. The
areas of ministry that she chose were Care,
Fellowship and Youth. Amanda also worked
with Altar Guild and learned how to do
communion prep with her mom and sister.
During the first semester, Amanda came
regularly to Kids’ Klub helping with one of the
younger groups of children. She was an
assistant leader helping them in each of the
Katie Stanley is the youngest daughter of
Evelyn Heskett and Mike Stanley. Katie has
aspirations for Lutheran Ministry. Once we

activities during the Sunday Evening
program. She has always helped with
Vacation Bible School and the Easter Egg
Hunt at Hosanna too. Amanda is now a
sophomore at Watkins Memorial High School.
Katie Vance is the daughter of Terri Vance
and Michael Vance. Katie lives with her mom
near the Lynd Fruit Farm. She has a great
love for horses in her spare time. She was
active at the Ohio State Fair this year with her
horses. Katie participates in horse therapy
with special needs children which is a very
rewarding activity for her. She has been a
“behind the scenes” volunteer, but active in
her Hosanna Ministry. Katie has overseen
the care of the children’s library at Hosanna.
She straightens the books and keeps the
area picked up. Her other ongoing activity for
her years of catechism has been keeping the
children’s “Worship Bags” filled with the
crayons, pencils sharpened, new coloring
books and spiral notebooks. Katie has also
served in the areas of Fellowship and Altar
Guild Committees. Katie likes to help with
children activities when she is available too.
Katie and her mom can be seen at the
contemporary service on Sundays.

would like to take the opportunity to introduce
our teachers to you….
Lori Butts
Hello, I started my tenth year of teaching at
Hosanna Lutheran Childhood Center. I have
been married 23 years to my husband, Tim
and we have 3 children. Nichole is 21 years old
and a graduate from Mount Vernon Nazarene
University for Early Childhood Education.
Tyler is 19 years old and a graduate from
Watkins Memorial High School, and the CTEC (Career Technical Education Center) for
firefighting. Kaleb is 15 years old and a
sophomore at Watkins Memorial High School.
I graduated in 1989 from Watkins Memorial
High School. I attended Central Ohio
Technical College and achieved a diploma from
the International Correspondence School in
Daycare. I have also completed my Child
Development Associates in 2009. I am
currently acting as the Interim Director at
HLCC. My hobbies include scrapbooking,
painting, reading Christian mysteries and
spending time with my family.
Janet Hilliard
Hello, I am entering my 15th year as a teacher
here at Hosanna Lutheran Childhood Center. I
am a graduate of Findlay High School. My
Husband Roger and I have been married for 41
years and we have two children, Elizabeth and

James. We also have on granddaughter and
three grandsons. I have worked with children
in preschool settings for over 20 years. My
hobbies include bowling, reading and working
with young children at church.
Tony for 39 years and we have 2 daughters.
Our daughter Dawn and her husband Chad live
in the area with our 2 grandsons Noah and
Quinn. Our daughter Brittany and her
husband Tim live in Michigan with our
grandson Luke and our granddaughter
Adelyn. This summer we became new parents
to a little brown cock-a-poo puppy named
Mandy. I graduated from St. Albans High
and attended Marshall University in
education. My hobbies include spending lots
of fun time with my grandchildren, family
and friends, traveling, crafts and watching
movies.
Karen Wiegerig
My name is Karen, and I have been teaching at
Hosanna Lutheran Childhood Center for 13
years. I am a graduate of Watkins Memorial
High School. I have attended CTI, Columbus
State Community College, and have completed
my CDA. My husband Rob and I have been
married for 27 years. We have two sons: Tyler,
age 23 and Ryan, age 20. We also have a
daughter, Kyla, who is a junior at Eastland
Career Center studying restaurant services.
We have an extended animal family that
include dogs, cats, Ball Pythons, and a turtle.
Hobbies I enjoy are reading, gardening, going
to the zoo, movies and spending time with
family and friends.
Alena Davis
I am starting my 2nd year of teaching here at
been married for 14 years to my husband
Mark and we have four children. Makayla who
is 13, is in the 8th grade at Watkins Middle
School. Chiane is 11 and is in the 6th grade at
Watkins Middle School. Bryna is 5 and
attends the 5-day Pre-K program here at
HLCC. Last but not least is Waylon who will
soon be 2 and he loves playing with his trucks.
Our family pets include a dog named Cole and
14 chickens. I graduated from Westerville
South high school in 1999 and I am currently
studying Nuclear Medicine at Columbus State
Community College. I play softball every week
on a co-ed team and I enjoy watching my
daughters play softball and volleyball.
Laura Fout
Hello, I am starting my 5th year of teaching at
been married for 16 years to my husband Rick
and we have three children. Nate is 12 years old
and he is a 6th grader at Watkins Middle
School. Ryan is 10 years old and is in the 4th
grade at Etna Elementary. Samantha is 4
years old and started the 5-day Pre-K program
here at HLCC. Our family pets include a dog
named Ashley, and Twinkie the Hamster. I
graduated from Watkins Memorial High
School in 1993, and attended Ohio State
University’s Early Childhood Education
program and I have also obtained my CDA. I
enjoy watching my kids play sports, taking
walks, reading and watching movies.
Trish Johnston
Hello, my name is Trish Johnston. I subbed
last year here at Hosanna Lutheran Childhood
Center. I am currently working with Ms. Lori
in the Tuesday and Thursday morning class.
I have been married to my husband Bob for 23
years. We have 4 children, Noah who is a
senior in High School at Watkins, Lydia who
is a sophomore at Watkins, Aiden who is in 2nd
grade at Kirkersville and Jenna who attended
HLCC last year is now a Kindergartner. I was
an x-ray tech for 20 years and I love “Do-ityourself” projects”.
Dee Torchia
Let me introduce myself, I am Dee Torchia and
I am starting a new year with the preschool
children this year. In the past I have taught
Pre-K. I returned to HLCC last year after
retiring from the Southwest Licking School
District. I have been married to my husband

The Power and Practice of Prayer
We know from scripture that we are supposed to pray, but we often struggle with how to do it,
how to make time for it, and how to know if God is really listening. This series will address these
questions and others, helping us to experience the power of prayer and inviting us into a deeper
practice of prayer. The desired outcome of this series is to raise the spiritual temperature of our
congregation through empowering Hosanna to enter into a deeper relationship with God.
WHY PRAY?-October 6, 2013 | Genesis 1:26-31a
God creates us to be in a relationship with God and others. We pray because we believe in God
who loves us with an everlasting love and wants us as partners and friends. We pray because
God has made us for it.
WHAT GETS IN THE WAY?-October 20, 2013 | Genesis 3:1-12
Just as prayer is centered on a relationship with a personal God, overcoming the temptation not
to pray involves struggling with the enemies of that relationship. The tendency to live without God
is always present.
HOW DO WE CREATE SPACE FOR GOD?-October 27, 2013 | Mark 1:35-39
Now that we have dealt with the “why” questions (why do we pray and why don’t we pray?), we
can address the “how” question: How do we pray? Before we go there, however, we have to
prepare the soil for prayer. We have to create space for God mentally, emotionally and physically
to help our relationship with God flourish.
WHAT DOES JESUS SAY ABOUT PRAYER?-November 3, 2013 | Luke 11:5-13
Jesus teaches about prayer in three ways. Through some of the parables, he encourages people
to pursue prayer. He teaches us how to pray through the example of the Lord’s Prayer, and he
teaches through his own example of retreating often for prayer. According to Jesus, the most
important thing about prayer is to keep at it.
WHAT ABOUT PRAYER AND HEALING?-November 10, 2013 | Luke 17:11-19
In the Gospels, one-third of all the writing is related to the healing ministry of Jesus. When Jesus
sends out his disciples, he tells them to preach, teach and heal. Healing refers to the whole
person-body, mind and spirit-brought into harmony in relationship with God
HOW DO WE PRAY WITH THE PSALMS?-November 17, 2013 | Psalm 13:1-2, Psalm 42:5
The psalms make up an ancient prayer book that has accompanied the people of God for
centuries. The psalmists are not afraid to express their feelings openly to God. The psalms call
us into conversation with God. They encourage us to be open and honest with our Creator.
HOW DO WE PRAY FOR GUIDANCE?-November 24, 2013 | Psalm 25:1-10; Luke 6:12-16
Christians have often used prayer as a means of discerning direction when facing difficult
decisions. This process has often included fasting. Along with input from trusted community,
these practices can help us discern direction in life.
