Sculpting a New You in 2016

For millions of American women, a new year
represents a fresh beginning in regards to fitness
goals. Whether the focus is losing body fat,
improving muscle definition, increasing cardio
fitness, or becoming more flexible, the desire is
rarely greater than when the new year arrives.
Two local fitness facilities, Cameron’s Anytime
Fitness, the Dragon’s Lair Combat Sports and
Fitness, and the Cameron Regional YMCA have
been helping women reach their goals for years.
Owners and trainers from these facilities spent
time discussing current trends in exercise and what
they have to offer.

Intimate Designs May Be the Perfect Fit For Women

Even in modern times, scores of women across
America are still stuck in the Dark Ages when it
comes to having a bra that is properly fitted for
their body. For many, there’s an underlying anxiety
about asking questions and getting sound information regarding a proper bra fit.
The highly trained staff at Intimate Designs
recognizes and appreciates those concerns, and
offers an experience that is positive and pleasant.
Brenda Coulter, owner of Intimate Designs, is
keenly aware of the number of women who still
wear the same size bra they wore in high school,
although their bodies have continued to change.
“We typically see women who are wearing a bra
that is almost always one or two cup sizes too small
and one or two band sizes too big,” stated Coulter.
A poorly fitted bra can produce all sorts of problems such as muscle strain, backaches, rashes, and a
constant uncomfortable feeling.
A correct measurement is just the beginning,
yet unfortunately, many outlets stop there. At Intimate Designs, skilled staff will provide a professional bra fitting that compliments not only the
measurement, but also a woman’s curves and style.
“We believe it takes a whole heart of courage to

body size will feel comfortable here,” said Coulter.
Guidance provided by skilled, knowledgeable,

Coulter was a dressmaker for years and was

typically booked a year out. She worked for a bridal shop making bridal alterations and creating
wedding gowns and bridesmaids dresses. After
several years, Coulter realized that she had the skill
set and knowledge base to create a business that
celebrated women of all body types.
The little value that women seem to place on
their bras amazes Coulter. “It’s incredible to me
that somebody can drive a gorgeous car, carry an
incredible bag on her arm, have a ring bigger than
her finger, and yet wear a bra that doesn’t flatter her
figure because it’s not properly fitted.”
Coulter appreciates the differences between
what American and European women want in
intimate wear. “America is that bigger, bustier client. American women want the t-shirt seamless
bra. In Europe, nobody wants that. They want the
beautiful matching bra and panty sets, and they
want white. We American women don’t want
white. A common mistake American women
make is wearing a white bra under a white t-shirt.
A nude skin tone, a pink, a grey, even a red matches
most of our skin tones so much better than a white
bra does. A white t-shirt over any of those neutral
medium tone colors blends in more. This is a
knowledge thing, and we really work hard on educating our customers.”

Molding Muscle in Northwest Missouri

Some would argue that muscles are
a woman’s greatest fashion statement.
For one northwest Missouri female
bodybuilder, showcasing a unique set of
genetics speaks volumes for women.
Jessica Harmon has been molding
muscle with great success for years. Her
story begins in California where she
was born and raised. Due to frequent
family moves, Jessica did not have the
opportunity to participate in high
school sports. Jessica began to run
when she was twenty, and at that time,
resided in Missouri. She ran for years
before entering her first marathon at
the age of twenty-nine.
In 2006, an Anytime Fitness
business opened in Excelsior Springs,
and Jessica took the opportunity to
begin working out using weights while
continuing to run. Three years later, she
and her husband, Robert, purchased
the Anytime Fitness.
People began to take notice as
Jessica continued to lift and educate
herself about the discipline of
weightlifting. “I had people begin to
start asking me if I competed. Although
I didn’t, it planted that seed,” stated
Jessica.
However, planting the seed and
growing the product of muscularity
requires a commitment of time. “That’s
why a lot of good bodybuilders are
older, because when you’re younger,
you don’t have the time to put on the
muscle mass.” Knowing this, Jessica
reduced the running she had
incorporated into her fitness plan, and
began to get serious about lifting.
In the beginning, Jessica strength
trained five times a week, which
included basic exercises. “I’d do splits
like chest and back, shoulders and arms;
legs. I would also include basic pull-ups,
pull downs, rows, bench presses, incline,
and flat fly’s.”
As the training progressed however,
Jessica began to pinpoint weak areas
that needed more attention to
maximize definition. “My shoulders
are an example, so I had to change the
way I trained them. I started doing a lot
more isolation exercises, and split my
body up more. For instance, now I do
chest and triceps, then back and biceps,
shoulders and calves; legs. There’s a lot
of one-arm and one-leg exercises. I get
bored easily, so I vary the routine all the
time,” remarked Jessica.
At the age of thirty-five, Jessica took
the plunge and entered her first
competitive bodybuilding event. Held
in Kansas City, the Muscle Mayhem
offered a variety of categories with
Jessica entering three events: the novice,
masters, and open.
The show is divided into two parts,
with the pre-judging in the morning,
and the evening show that includes a
routine to music. “I was a nervous
wreck,” admits Jessica. “The stage

The judges want all the muscles to be
proportionate. You don’t want to be
really big on top and small on the
bottom. The judges are also looking for
muscularity and leanness. The funny
thing is that your physique looks
completely different just standing there
versus when you’re doing the poses. So,
the better poser you are, the better your
physique looks.”
Jessica came away from the event
with outstanding results, as she placed
first in novice, second in masters, and
third in the open division. A great
experience, Jessica learned much more
about the layout of a competitive
bodybuilding event and could focus on
areas to improve upon.
According to Jessica, diet is the
number one factor when it comes to
serious bodybuilding. Yet, every
bodybuilder is different, therefore what
might work for one is in many cases not
the key for another. “There’s no one
rule for everybody. I personally do a
high protein, high fat, and little to no
carb diet,” said Jessica.
Months before a big competition,
Jessica may eat exactly the same foods
every day because it works for her body.
That may look like six to eight ounces
of beef, some broccoli, green beans or
asparagus for breakfast. Lunch might
include fish with some shrimp, half an
avocado, and some green vegetables.
Dinner would be chicken and a mixed
salad with a tablespoon of ranch
dressing.
For hydration, Jessica
routinely drinks a gallon of water a day.
“You get used to eating like this. I
couldn’t imagine plopping down on the
couch with a bag of chips. You just get
out of those habits,” smiled Jessica.
Hard core dedication has resulted in
successful competitions at the Liberty
Natural Southern States Classic, several
shows in Kansas City, and the All-Stars,
which is a national qualifier. Jessica also
finished fourth at a national show in
Las Vegas in July of 2014.
Jessica has received a lot of attention,
since committing to a life of
bodybuilding, and it hasn’t always been
positive. “I get it all. I get people who
have nothing but awesome, positive
things to say, and I have people at the
other end of the continuum. I
remember one woman who used to say
the same thing to her workout partner
when I was near. She’d say, ‘I don’t want
to look like that.’ After repeatedly
hearing that, I finally went over to her
and said ‘you don’t have to worry
because you’re not ever going to look
like this.’ You don’t just wake up one
morning and say ‘oh crap, I went
overboard,’ ” laughed Jessica.
It was a year later when the same
woman asked Jessica to become her
trainer. After four years of training,
they have developed a solid friendship.
Insecurities rise to the surface when
it comes to female bodybuilding.
However, as a personal trainer, Jessica
has repeatedly witnessed the positive
responses of women who dare to push
their bodies a little harder. “I’ve noticed
that women change the way they think
about weights once they get in there.
They realize that it’s fun to be strong, so
they get a little more excited and that
fear goes away as they see new strength
and a change in their physique,” said
Jessica.
Weight lifting for women doesn’t
mean women have to stop dancing,
running, kickboxing, going to yoga, or
eating baked goods. It doesn’t mean
heavy weights and a panel of judges. It
means that your main goal is to grow
muscle. It translates into a healthy way
to express strength, resilience, and
dedication for ones health.
Currently, Jessica is a personal
trainer, a competition coach, and owner
of Anytime Fitness branches in
Excelsior Springs, Chillicothe, and
Richmond. She also works with clients
in Cameron, and has recently
developed her own personal training
studio that focuses on strong fitness.
