p r o p e r t y l o c a t e d south o f G l a c i e r Creek about
34
m i l e s north
of t h e town o f Stewart, B r i t i s h Columbia.
The p r o p e r t y i s u n d e r l a i n by a r g i l l i t e s and l i m e s t o n e s o f t h e B i t t e r Creek Formation i n which s h e a r zones
c o n t a i n i n g s i l v e r , l e a d , and zinc m i n e r a l i z a t i o n occur.
The main vein i s a q u a r t z - f i l l e d f i s s u r e which
appears t o have c o n s i d e r a b l e l a t e r a l e x t e n t and depth.
A
s e c t i o n o f t h i s v e i n was mined and some ore-grade material
c o n c e n t r a t e d by means o f a 50 t o n m i l l i n 1910,
Recent work has confirmed t h a t t h i s zone appears
t o be t h e o n l y s t r u c t u r e of i n t e r e s t on t h e p r o p e r t y and
should be f u r t h e r explored and t e s t e d t o f i n d o t h e r zones
of c o n c e n t r a t i o n by means o f diamond d r i l l i n g .
A
diamond d r i l l i n g programme is recommended a t an
e s t i m a t e d c o s t of $40,700.

A t h r e e man crew c o n s i s t i n g o f f i e l d g e o l o g i s t ,
p r o s p e c t o r and a s s i s t a n t i n v e s t i g a t e d t h e p r o p e r t y h e l d
by S t a r b i r d Mines Ltd.
(N.P.L. ) , l o c a t e d about 4% m i l e s
n o r t h o f t h e tcrwn o f Stewart, B r i t i s h Colurribia, between
J u l y 22 , 1969, and August 6, 1969.
The p a r t y c o n s i s t e d of M r . P. P. Griggs, M r . R.
B u r r e l l and M r . R. Schumachex.
Since t h e topography i s extremely p r e c i p i t o u s ,
a camp was a i r l i f t e d by h e l i c o p t e r t o the east end of t h e
p r o p e r t y on t h e B i l l mineral claim, and l a t e r moved t o
t h e L i t t l e Joe Crown Granted claim.
From t h e s e t w o l o c a t i o n s , a l l o l d workings i n t h e
area w e r e examined and sampled.
The remainder o f t h e p r o p e r t y
w a s t r a v e r s e d , paying p a r t i c a l a r a t t e n t i o n along s t r e a m s
s i n c e most o f t h e ground i s h e a v i l y v e g e t a t e d and overburden covered, and outcrop i s exposed mainly i n t h e stream
beds.
An attempt t o t r a c e t h e L i t t l e Joe v e i n s t r u c t u r e
a l o n g s t r i k e t o t h e north w a s inconclusive.
A d d i t i o n a l claims have been s t a k e d o n b e h a l f o f
S t a r b i r d Mines Ltd., however r e g i s t r a t i o n o f t h r e e claims

The claim group is located on G l a c i e r Creek about
four miles northeast of the town of Stewart, British Columbia.
The best mode of access t o t h e property i s by
helicopter, however a well worn pack t r a i l from a point about
3%miles along the road from Stewart, a t t h e junction of
Bear River and Glacier Creek, may be travelled on foot about
2 miles t o t h e L i t t l e Joe Crown Granted claim.
The town of Stewart i s s i t u a t e d a t t h e head of
t h e Portland Canal about 1 2 0 miles north of P r i n c e Rupert,

TOPOGRAPHY AND CLIMATE
E l e v a t i o n s range from approximately 500' AMSL
a t t h e west end of t h e p r o p e r t y on Glacier Creek, t o about
4,000' AMSL on t h e B i l l c l a i m a t t h e e a s t end o f t h e
property.
The p o r t a l s o f t h e o l d P o r t l a n d Canal Mining
Company l o c a t e d on t h e L i t t l e Joe Crown g r a n t are a t a n elev a t i o n o f 2,400' AMSL and about 2,000' above G l a c i e r Creek,
The p r o p e r t y i s s t e e p , very rugged and h e a v i l y
f o r e s t e d and overburden covered.
The climate i s t y p i c a l of t h e n o r t h e r n c o a s t range
w i t h heavy r a i n f a l l during t h e summer season and extreme
s n o w f a l l i n winter.
Temperatures however, a r e g e n e r a l l y
mild, Stewart b e i y t h e most n o r t h e r l y i c e - f r e e p o r t i n
North A m e r i c a ,
HISTORY AND PREVIOUS WORK
A c o n s i d e r a b l e amount of work was done d u r i n g
the e a r l y p a r t of t h e c e n t u r y and p a r t i c u l a r l y between
A. C. A. H O W E INTERNATIONAL LIMITED
1907 and 1914 i n Che a r e a .
The Portland Canal Mining Company c a r r i e d o u t
most o f t h e work, and drove t h r e e t u n n e l s w i t h connecting
raises, stoped some a r e a s and sunk s e v e r a l open c u t s and
test p i t s on t h e L i t t l e Joe and Lucky Seven Crown granted
claims,
By 1910, a 50 t o n m i l l had been e r e c t e d a t t h e
Bear River and was i n o p e r a t i o n on a n i n t e r m i t t e n t b a s i s .
The o r e was conveyed from t h e mine workings t o t h e m i l l
by means o f an a e r i a l tramway.
Power was s u p p l i e d by means
o f a p l a n t u t i l i z i n g water from G l a c i e r Creek.
A l l necessary
b u i l d i n g s had been e r e c t e d , however no b u i l d i n g s o r equipment are now u s a b l e , and i n most cases no l o n g e r e x i s t .
During 1914, P o r t l a n d Canal Tunnels Ltd.,
drove a n a d i t a t an e l e v a t i o n o f 319' AMSL, from a p o i n t
o p p o s i t e t h e m i l l i n a g e n e r a l d i r e c t i o n o f S 70' E.
The a d i t w a s d r i v e n a d i s t a n c e o f 36711, and i s approximately
2200' v e r t i c a l l y below t h e L i t t l e Joe workings o f t h e
P o r t l a n d Canal Mining Company.
Four v e i n s t r u c t u r e s were i n t e r s e c t e d by t h i s
a d i t which a r e assumed t o correspond t o t h e f o u r v e i n s l o c a t e d
i n the Stewart p r o p e r t y t o t h e north.
The most e a s t e r l y
v e i n o n the Stewart and a v e i n a t 36101 from the p o r t a l i n

t h e P o r t l a n d C a n a l Tunnel were assumed t o c o r r e l a t e w i t h t h e
P o r t l a n d C a n a l ~ i n i n gCompany v e i n s t r u c t u r e on t h e L i t t l e
Joe claims.
I n t h e a r e a o f the B i l l mineral claim, s i x a d i t s
were d r i v e n i n t o t h e s i d e o f t h e mountain i n a g e n e r a l southe r l y direction.
The a d i t s r a n g e d i n l e n g t h from 20 f e e t
t o 600 f e e t and were d r i v e n d u r i n g t h e e a r l y p a r t of t h e
century.
I n t h e Bear R i v e r V a l l e y a r e a , p r o d u c t i o n was small
and was a t t a i n e d m a i n l y from t h e P o r t l a n d C a n a l , Red C l i f f ,
Dunwell, and P o r t e r Idaho mining p r o p e r t i e s .

This dike runs

The Coast Range I n t r u s i v e s o c c u r one m i l e southwest

miles t o t h e northwest o f t h e same l o c a t i o n .

GEOLOGY O F THE PROPERTY
The p r o p e r t y i s u n d e r l a i n b y t h e B i t t e r Creek
Formation c o n s i s t i n g o f f e r r u g i n o u s a r g i l l i t e s and minor
i n t e r b e d d e d limestone.
The a r g i l l i t e s are t h i n l y bedded
w i t h i r o n s t a i n i n g common a l o n g bedding p l a n e s .
The l i m e s t o n e b e d s a r e u s u a l l y less t h a n f o u r
i n c h e s i n t h i c k n e s s , a r e d a r k b u f f i n c o l o u r and e x c e e d i n g l y
hard.

The sediments are c u t by s e v e r a l shear zones
s t r i k i n g about N 24' W w i t h v e r t i c a l dips.

z i n c m i n e r a l i z a t i o n occur w i t h i n t h e s e zones.

ECONOMIC GEOLOGY
The main zone on t h e p r o p e r t y i s t h e zone mined by
t h e P o r t l a n d Canal Mining Company.
T h i s zone occurs a s a q u a r t z - c a l c i t e f i l l e d f i s s u r e
i n a r g i l l i t e s dipping about 3-0' t o t h e w e s t with a g e n e r a l
northerly strike.
The zone c o n t a i n s i n c l u s i o n s of h o s t
rock r a n g i n g from pebble s i z e t o boulder s i z e g i v i n g t h e
v e i n a b r e c c i a t e d appearance.
~ i n e r a l i z a t i o noccurs i n t h e form o f massive
p y r i t e , t e t r a h e d r i t e , galena and s p h a l e r i t e , however t h e r e
appears t o be a s e g r e g a t i o n a s normally galena and sphale r i t e do n o t occur i n t h e same specimen,

The l o w e s t , o r No. 3 t u n n e l , i s t h e working t u n n e l ,
t h e tramway t h e r e going d i r e c t l y t o t h e b u n k e r s a t t h e upper
t e r m i n a l of t h e a e r i a l tramway.
This t u n n e l , i n October,
1910, was i n about 500 f e e t and f o l l o w s i n on t h e v e i n which
i s m i n e r a l i z e d a l l t h e way; b u t what i s c o n s i d e r e d pay-ore
was o n l y s t r u c k a t about 100 f e e t i n , from which p o i n t it
apparently continues t o t h e face, although t h e tunnel i n a
c o u p l e o f p l a c e s seems, i n t h e d r i v i n g , t o have r u n away
from t h e ore.
From t h i s l e v e l a r a i s e h a s been p u t up t o
t h e No. 2 t u n n e l , and t h i s acts a s a n o r e - c h u t e from t h e
upper l e v e l s .
The No. 2 t u n n e l i s about 55 f e e t v e r t i c a l l y h i g h e r
t h a n No. 3 , t h e v e i n d i p p i n g a t a n a n g l e o f a b o u t 30 d e g r e e s
and was i n about 200 f e e t , w i t h a r a i s e b e i n g p u t up t o t h e
No, 1 t u n n e l , and which, i n October, was a l m o s t through.
A t about 25 f e e t i n from t h e p o r t a l t h e t u n n e l e n t e r e d
on pay-ore,
i n which it h a s c o n t i n u e d t o t h e face.
The No. 1 t u n n e l i s about 40 f e e t h i g h e r t h a n
No. 2 , and h a s been d r i v e n about 180 f e e t and developing
p a y a r e f o r i t s e n t i r e l e n g t h , t h e f a c e b e i n g i n such o r e .
A t one p o i n t i n t h e d r i v i n g t h e t u n n e l w a s d e f l e c t e d t o
t h e r i g h t and r a n o u t o f t h e o r e - s h o o t , b u t , upon b e i n g
b r o u g h t back t o t h e o r i g i n a l c o u r s e , p i c k e d up t h e o r e again.

t h e p o r t a l of No. 1 t u n n e l .

as s t a t e d , would seem t o i n d i c a t e a n o r e - s h o o t
a t l e a s t 350 f e e t l o n g , developed below t h e o u t c r o p s , a l o n g
t h e p l a n e o f t h e v e i n f o r a d i s t a n c e o f a b o u t 400 f e e t ; t h e
t h i c k n e s s o f t h e pay-ore h a s been e s t i m a t e d by t h e management as a v e r a g i n g about 5 f e e t , t h i s f i g u r e b e i n g , i n t h e
o p i n i o n o f t h e writer, under t h e mark, r a t h e r t h a n o v e r
it.
Should t h e ore-shoot p r o v e t o be a s l o n g i n t h e t u n n e l s
as t h e open c u t s d i r e c t l y above them seem t o i n d i c a t e , t h i s
would a r g u e a n amount o f o r e from p r e s e n t development s u f f i c i e n t t o keep t h e p r e s e n t m i l l busy f o r t h r e e y e a r s .
The
f a c e s o f a l l t h e t u n n e l s were found t o be i n o r e which w a s
apparently r i c h e r than t h e average of t h e o r e shoot.
The monthly a v e r a g e a s s a y f o r September o f t h e
f a c e of No. 2 t u n n e l i s r e p o r t e d as b e i n g :

These v a l u e s v a r y from month t o month, and are quoted merely
as a n i n d i c a t i o n o f t h e g r a d e of o r e m e t w i t h " .

No major f a u l t i n g h a s been noted on t h e p r o p e r t y ,
however two major n o r t h e r l y s t r i k i n g f a u l t s occur t o t h e
w e s t o f t h e c l a i m s running through t h e o l d Dunwell Mine.
I t appears t h a t t h e a r g i l l i t e s were l a t e r i n t r u d e d by
d i k e s which follow t h e f a u l t s and s h e a r zones.
Most o f
t h e ore-bearing s h e a r s a r e i n c o n t a c t w i t h f i n e grained
dikes
.
The L i t t l e Joe zone ( o l d P o r t l a n d Canal Mining
Company workings) i s i n c o n t a c t w i t h a d i k e o f quart% d2oOzite
composition.
The main zone is r e p o r t e d t o be about 3,000'
i n length.
The claims have been mapped i n t h e a r e a o f t h e
workings, however s i n c e overburden i s e x t e n s i v e , t h e v a r i o u s
showings cannot be c o r r e l a t e d ,
A q u a r t z v e i n s t r u c t u r e has been l o c a t e d between
S-1 ( f i l l e d i n s h a f t ) and t r e n c h 2 , t o t h e northwest of t h e
o l d workings ( s e e map a t r e a r ) , b u t it i s n o t known i f t h i s
i s a n e x t e n s i o n of t h e main\ zone, o r a s e p a r a t e s t r u c t u r e .

v e i n s exposed a t s u r f a c e , p a r t i c u l a r l y as f a r away as t h e
A. C. A. HOWE INTERNATIONAL LIMITED
L i t t l e Joe, and s i n c e t h e eone appears t o have a s o u t h e r l y
plunge.
There i s however, no r e a s o n t o s u s p e c t t h a t the
zones do n o t have good l a t e r a l e x t e n t .

The a d i t s i n t h e a r e a 0 5 t h e B i l l mineral claim
a r e n o t considered t o b e o f i n t e r e s t s i n c e t h e v e i n s a r e
very narrow, do not appear t o have c o n t i n u i t y , have extremely
d i f f i c u l t a c c e s s , and g e n e r a l l y low assay r e s u l t s obtained.
CONSLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS
During t h e e a r l y p a r t o f t h e c e n t u r y , some v e i n
m a t e r i a l was processed by a 50 t o n m i l l , i n d i c a t i n g oregrade m a t e r i a l .
Recent sampling h a s i n d i c a t e d , somewhat
e r r a t i c b u t i n t e r e s t i n g v a l u e s i n s i l v e r , l e a d and zinc.
The main v e i n appears t o have c o n s i d e r a b l e l a t e r a l
e x t e n t , and depth p o t e n t i a l i s good.
I t h a s been found
t h a t because of e x t e n s i v e overburden cover zones cannot be
examined o r followed c l o s e l y .
Further e x p l o r a t i o n of t h e main .vein. by diamond
d r i l l i n g a s a means o f o u t l i n i n g o t h e r c o n c e n t r a t i o n s of

The diamond d r i l l i n g recommended i n A.C.A,Howe
n a t i o n a l r e p o r t No.
Inter-
91, October 6, 1967, s h o u l d b e i n c r e a s e d t o
a 2,000' programme and a series o f h o l e s d r i l l e d w e s t o f t h e o l d
workings a l o n g t h e s t r i k e o f t h e zone.
The d r i l l h o l e s would b e i n t h e o r d e r o f 200 t o 300
