BLESSING & OPENING OF THE SHIRLEY WALLACE PARISH CENTRE
This week: Jer 31:7-9; Heb 5:1-6; Mk 10:46-52
Next week: Apoc 7:2-4, 9-14; 1 Jn 3:1-3; Mt 5:1-12
The first reading today from Jeremiah has the image of a very mixed group of people
being called by, and following, the Lord:
“the blind and the lame, women with child, women in labour.”
Basically it’s a group of people who would find making a journey difficult.
And that’s the point: other people would have probably told them not to try, to stay at
home. But God invites even those for whom the journey is difficult.
And that’s a comforting message – because at many times we ourselves will be numbered
among those for whom the journey of being a disciple is a difficult one – and it’s good to
know that God’s invitation isn’t withdrawn when that’s the case.

RICHARD ROHR’S MEDITATION
THE SECOND HALF OF LIFE: PEACEFUL CHANGE
In the second half of life, one has less and less need or interest in eliminating the
negative or fearful, making rash judgments, holding on to old hurts, or feeling any
need to punish other people. Your superiority complexes have gradually departed in
all directions. You do not fight these things anymore; they have just shown themselves
too many times to be useless, ego-based, counterproductive, and often entirely wrong.
You learn to positively ignore and withdraw your energy from evil or stupid things
rather than fight them directly.
Now, you fight things only when you are directly called and equipped to do so. You do
not define yourself by opposition or eccentricity as the young often choose to do. We
all become a well-disguised mirror image of anything that we fight too long or too
directly. That which we oppose determines the energy and frames the questions after a
while. We lose all our inner freedom.
By the second half of life, you have learned that most frontal attacks on evil just
produce another kind of evil in yourself, along with a very inflated self-image. They
also incite a lot of pushback from those you have attacked. Holier-than-thou people
usually end up holier than nobody.
In the second half, you try to influence events, work for change, quietly persuade,
change your own attitude, pray, or forgive instead of attacking things head on.

Life, pp. 118-119
MAGGS THOMPSETT’S RETIREMENT
As advised last week, sadly Maggs Thompsett
has decided to step down from her role in the Parish Office.
Maggs has done a
wonderful job in coordinating so many aspects of parish life and has done it all with
great dedication and competence. We will sorely miss her and owe her a great debt of
gratitude for her conscientious ministry to the parish. Maggs will be finishing up in the
Parish Office at the end of this month.
We will be farewelling Maggs at a special end
of year dinner for the PPC, Finance Committee and School Board.

THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS WHICH HAS JUST CONCLUDED IN ROME
News on what
has happened is fairly thin on the ground in the secular press. However you can find
links to articles analysing the Synod discussions on our parish website under ‘News and
Events’  ‘News/Articles of Interest’.
OUR NEXT PARISH SOCIAL EVENT: CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT
In December we will have an evening of Carols by
Candlelight in the grounds of our Parish School. This will be
a joint initiative of our parish and parish school and will also
involve children from our State Schools in the parish and our
parish choirs. In conjunction with the Carols there will be a
range of food stalls (as we have had at our parish fete).
Date: Friday 4th December – early evening until 9:30pm.
Watch this space for more details.

Why are we called “Fusion”? Because we “fuse” together
food, friendship, fun and faith on Friday for a fantastic
time! All FUSION meetings are in the Shirley
Wallace Centre above the church. Cost is $5,
which includes pizza and dessert.
NEXT MEETING for years 7,8 and 9 Friday 20 Nov
Calling all Year 6 students!
Come see what FUSION is all about… pizza, games and lots of laughing.
Friday 27 November from 5.30 – 7.30 pm.

OUR MONTHLY CHILDREN’S MASSES
A reminder of our Masses for November:
* on the first Sunday of the month as usual (next Sunday 1st November) at the 9:15am
Mass at Killara
* in November the Children’s Mass at Lindfield will be on the third Sunday of the month
rather than the second Sunday of the month (ie 15th November) to coincide with the
special Mass to welcome 2016 Kindergarten families at our parish school.
_________________________________________________________________________
Book of Remembrance
The Book of Remembrance in each of our two churches in the
parish will be put in its place of honour on All Souls Day and
will remain in the church throughout November.
Please write in the names of relatives and friends who have
died in the last year:
- at Killara the Book of Remembrance is on a stand in the
middle of the church during this month of October
- at Lindfield the Book of Remembrance is on a stand in the
main foyer of the church.
5
ALL SOULS DAY
All Souls Day falls on Monday week 2nd November.
During Mass the Book of Remembrance, containing the
names of those who for whom we pray in November, will
be put in its place of honour in each of our churches.
At each Mass we will also be inviting everyone to come
forward after the Gospel to place a lighted candle on the
altar (candles will be provided – please do not bring your
own) which will burn during the Eucharistic Prayer. The
candles will be the sign of all our prayers for those who
have died, their light a sign of our hope in the
resurrection. Mass times are:
Lindfield 10:00am (no 9:15am Mass)
Killara 7:30pm
Celebrating Christmas – Making a Joyful Sound Unto the Lord
~ Please be part of a choir for Christmas ~
Even if you are not regularly part of the choir, we invite you to be part
of the special choir for the 10:30pm Vigil Mass for Christmas at
Lindfield (and the Carols at 10pm preceding it). Please be part of
making this Christmas celebration special.
Rehearsals take place on Thursdays 12th, 19th and 26th November and
3rd, 10th and 17th December in Lindfield church at from 8:15pm –
9:15pm, or contact Christian Catsanos (0405 594300).
CANCELLATION OF FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY FORMATION DAY:
Regrettably we have had to cancel the proposed adult education and formation day
with Bishop Graeme Rutherford scheduled for Saturday 31st October. We had only
about a dozen people put their name down for the day which does not make it possible
for us to bring Bishop Graeme up from Melbourne for the day.
THE PARISH FINANCIAL REPORT for the 2014-15 financial year can be found on the
Parish Website under ‘Our Parish’  ‘Parish Finances’.
A NEW PARISHIONER FROM SOUTH AMERICA
We have a new parishioner from
Colombia who would love to meet any parishioners also from there, or if we have no
parishioners from Colombia – from South America more broadly. If you would be
happy to be put in touch with our new parishioner please contact Fr Colin.
THE LINDFIELD LUNCHEON CLUB, an initiative of our parish, is celebrating 30 years
since its foundation by Fr Bill Aliprandi with a Christmas Luncheon at Killara Golf Club
on Wednesday 18th November. Full details – along with how to book – can be found
on the Parish Website under ‘Parish Activities’  ‘Lindfield Luncheon Club’.

PROPOSAL RE BELLS
With regard to the proposal from ANZAB (the Australia and
New Zealand Association of Bellringers) regarding the possibility of putting a ring of
five changeringing bells in the tower of Holy Family Church with the provision of
some substantial external funding (see last week’s bulletin):
 Funding: a reminder that no parish funds would be used for such a project. It would
be dependent on individual parishioners wishing to make donations to enable this to
happen. However I have put this proposal before you because it comes with the offer
of around $10,000 in funding. Sheets for donation purposes are available in the
foyers of Holy Family Church.
 A Visit to a Belltower: to answer the questions: “What is ‘changeringing’? And what
is being proposed by the installation of this ring of bells? another church in our own
diocese – St Leonard’s at Naremburn – has had changeringing bells installed in only
the last few years and those interested in finding out more are invited to come to
Naremburn, to see the bells, to have changeringing explained, and to see the bells
being rung. An initial opportunity for this will be on the evening of this Thursday
29th October. If you wish to book in for this visit please contact me by phone or
email (my details are on p.2) by this Monday 26th October as numbers will be
limited.

PARISH WELCOME
TO KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES FOR 2016

On Sunday 15th November at the 10:15am Mass at
Lindfield we will have our parish welcome for our
Kindergarten families for 2016 at Holy Family

than 8th November.

On Sunday 8th November
the choir from St Francis of
Assisi at Paddington will join
us to lead the music at the

Please be there!
ADVANCE NOTICE REGARDING OUR DECEMBER HEALING MASS

MUSIC FOR THE VIGIL MASS CELEBRATED BY BISHOP PETER COMENSOLI
AT HOLY FAMILY CHURCH LINDFIELD (continues p. 10)
ENTRANCE HYMN:
THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION
Please join in:
The Church’s one foundation
is Jesus Christ her Lord,
she is His new creation
by water and the Word.
From heaven He came and sought her
to be His holy bride;
with His own blood He bought her
and for her life He died.
Elect from every nation,
yet one o’er all the earth;
her charter of salvation,
one Lord, one faith, one birth;
one holy Name she blesses,
partakes one holy food,
and to one hope she presses,
with every grace endued.
’Mid toil and tribulation,
and tumult of her war,
she waits the consummation
of peace forevermore;
till, with the vision glorious,
her longing eyes are blest,
and the great Church victorious
shall be the Church at rest.
Yet she on earth hath union
with God the Three in One,
and mystic sweet communion
with those whose rest is won,
O happy ones and holy!
Lord, give us grace that we
like them, the meek and lowly,
on high may dwell with Thee.
Tune: AURELIA
Samuel Sebastian Wesley 1810-76
Words: Samuel John Stone 1839-1900
DEDICATION OF THE GIFTS
COME AS YOU ARE
Deidre Brown
Please join in:
Come as you are, that's how I want you.
Come as you are, feel quite at home.
Close to my heart, loved and forgiven;
come as you are, why stand alone.
No need to fear, love sets no limits.
No need to fear, love never ends.
Don't run away shamed and disheartened.
Rest in my love, trust me again.
I came to call sinners, not just the virtuous.
I came to bring peace, not to condemn.
Each time you fail to live by my promise,
why do you think I'd love you the less?
Come as you are, that's how I love you.
Come as you are, trust me again.
Nothing can change the love that I bear you.
All will be well, just come as you are.

THE PSALM
Ps 125
When the Lord delivered Zion from bondage,
It seemed like a dream.
Then was our mouth filled with laughter,
on our lips there were songs.
The heathens themselves said: ‘What marvels
the Lord worked for them!’
What marvels the Lord worked for us!
Indeed we were glad.
Deliver us, O Lord, from our bondage
as streams in dry land.
Those who are sowing in tears
will sing when they reap.
They go out, they go out, full of tears,
carrying seed for the sowing:
they come back, they come back, full of song,
carrying their sheaves.
The response is: The Lord has done great
things for us; we are filled with joy.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia! Our Saviour Jesus Christ has
done away with death, and brought us life
through his gospel. Alleluia!

THE NICENE CREED
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
(all bow at the following words in
bold):
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of
the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake
he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father & the
Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy,
catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism
for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward
to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen

MUSIC FOR THE VIGIL MASS CELEBRATED BY BISHOP PETER COMENSOLI
AT HOLY FAMILY CHURCH LINDFIELD (continued)
THANKSGIVING HYMN:
Please join in:
1 Alleluia! Sing to Jesus!
His the sceptre, his the throne;
Alleluia! His the triumph,
his the victory alone.
Hark! The songs of peaceful Zion
thunder like a mighty flood.
Jesus, out of every nation,
has redeemed us by his blood.
2 Alleluia! Not as orphans
are we left in sorrow now;
Alleluia! He is near us;
faith believes nor questions how.
Though the cloud from sight received him
when the forty days were o'er,
shall our hearts forget his promise,
"I am with you evermore"?
3 Alleluia! Bread of Angels,
and on earth our food, our stay;
Alleluia! Here the sinful
come to you from day to day.
Intercessor, friend of sinners,
earth's Redeemer, plead for me,
where the songs of all the sinless
sweep across the crystal sea.
4 Alleluia! King eternal,
you the Lord of lords we own:
Alleluia! born of Mary,
earth your footstool, heav’n your throne:
you within the veil have entered,
robed in flesh, our great High Priest:
you on earth both priest and victim,
in the Eucharistic feast!
Tune: HYFRYDOL
Rowland Hugh Pritchard 1811-87
Words: William Chatterton Dix 1837-98.
RECESSIONAL HYMN:
THINE BE THE GLORY
Please join in:
1. Thine be the glory,
risen conquering Son,
Endless is the victory
thou o’er death hast won;
Angels in bright raiment
rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave-clothes,
where thy body lay.
Refrain: Thine be the glory,
risen conquering Son,
endless is the victory
thou o’er death hast won.
2. Lo, Jesus meets us,
risen from the tomb;
Lovingly he greets us,
scatters fear and gloom;
Let the Church with gladness,
hymns of triumph sing,
for her Lord is living,
death has lost its sting.
3. No more we doubt thee,
glorious Prince of life;
Life is nought without thee:
aid us in our strife;
Make us more than conquerors,
through thy deathless love:
Bring us safe from Jordan
to thy home above.

(continued from page 15):
for the temple bread, but this is an exception, a matter of urgency, the soldiers need
food, and God would want us to responsibly do this.” And so he took the temple bread
and gave it to his soldiers. In the Gospels, Jesus praises this action by David and asks us
to imitate it, telling us that we are not made for the Sabbath, but that the Sabbath is
made for us.
David understood what is meant by that. He had discerned that God is not so much a
law to be obeyed as a gracious presence under which we are asked to creatively live.
He feared God, but as one fears someone in love, with a “holy fear,” not a blind,
legalistic one.
A young mother once shared this story with me: Her six year-old had just started
school. She had taught him to kneel by his bed each night before going to sleep and
recite a number of night prayers. One night, shortly after starting school, he hopped
into bed without first kneeling in prayer. Surprised by this, she challenged him with
the words: “Don’t you pray anymore?” His reply: “No, I don’t. My teacher at school
told us that we are not supposed to pray. She said that we’re supposed to talk to God …
and tonight I’m tired and have nothing to say!”
Like King David, he too had discerned what it really means to be God’s child and how
God is not so much a law to be obeyed as a gracious presence who desires a mutually
loving relationship, one of holy fear.

REFLECTING ON THIS SUNDAY’S SCRIPTURES ..
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
“Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.”
HOLY AND UNHOLY FEAR
Not all fear is created equal, at least not religiously. There’s a fear that’s healthy and
good, a sign of maturity and love. There’s also a fear that’s bad, that blocks maturity
and love. But this needs explanation.
There’s a lot of misunderstanding about fear inside of religious circles, especially
around the Scriptural passage that says that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.
Too often texts like these, as well as religion in general, have been used to instil an
unhealthy fear inside of people in the name of God. We need to live in “holy fear”, but
holy fear is a very particular kind of fear that should not be confused with fear as we
normally understand it.
What is “holy fear”? What kind of fear is healthy? What kind of fear triggers wisdom?
Holy fear is love’s fear, namely, the kind of fear that is inspired by love. It’s a fear based
upon reverence and respect for a person or a thing we love. When we genuinely love
another person we will live inside of a healthy anxiety, a worry that our actions should
never grossly disappoint, disrespect, or violate the other person. We live in holy fear
when we are anxious not to betray a trust or disrespect someone. But this is very
different from being afraid of somebody or being afraid of being punished.
Bad power and bad authority intimidate and make others afraid of them. God is never
that kind of power or authority. God entered our world as a helpless infant and God’s
power still takes that same modality. Babies don’t intimidate, even as they inspire holy
fear. We watch our words and our actions around babies not because they threaten us,
but rather because their very helplessness and innocence inspire an anxiety in us that
makes us want to be at our best around them.
The Gospels are meant to inspire that kind of fear. God is Love, a benevolent power, a
gracious authority, not someone to be feared. Indeed God is the last person we need to
fear. Jesus came to rid us of fear. Virtually every theophany in scripture (an instance
where God appears) begins with the words: “Do not be afraid!” What frightens us does
not come from God.
In the Jewish scriptures, the Christian Old Testament, King David is revealed as the
person who best grasped this. Among all the figures in the Old Testament, including
Moses and the great prophets, David is depicted as the figure that best exemplified
what it means to walk on this earth in the image and likeness of God, even though at a
point he grossly abuses that trust. Despite his great sin, it is to David, not to Moses or
the prophets, to whom Jesus attributes his lineage. David is the Christ-figure in the Old
Testament. He walked in holy fear of God, and never in an unhealthy fear.
To cite just one salient example: The Book of Kings recounts an incident where David
is, one day, returning from battle with his soldiers. His troops are hungry. The only
available food is the bread in the temple. David asks for that and is told that it is only to
be consumed by the priests in sacred ritual. He answers the priest to this effect: “I’m
the King, placed here by God to act responsibly in his name. We don’t ordinarily ask
