has success in business and
adventure
If Chris Moling gets an idea in his
head, he does it. He climbs mountains,
he runs triathlons, he owns several
successful businesses and he helps out
in the community.
At the young age of 15 Chris wanted
to be on the radio. While his first stint
was playing pre-recorded shows on
Sunday morning, he was still on the
radio. When he was in high school at Citrus
High, he decided to start his own disc
jockey business. At 17, the high school
told him he couldn’t DJ school dances. Chris then did what every ambitious
kid would do, he went around the
system. Along with his friend and business
partner they rented out the Citrus
County Auditorium and held a dance. Local kids flocked to the event, it was a
success. Chris turned a profit and The
Music Connection was formed. School
officials heard of the event and its
success, they then agreed to let Chris
DJ at high school events. Before taking one college course
Chris was already running a successful
DJ business and was working for
multiple radio stations. He continued
his career in radio while obtaining
a degree in Psychology from the
University of South Florida. Even though he was a young
successful businessman his mother felt
he needed a career job. Senator Dean,
then Sheriff Dean, offered Moling
a position in the communications
department of the Sheriff’s Office. Moling had a background in radio,
so putting him on the radio dispatch
seemed a normal course thought the
Sheriff. Moling spent almost a decade at the
Sheriff’s Office, while there he got
another idea. He learned about stress
management and realized there was a
need for stress management training. Direct Response Communications
was born. DRC is a company started
by Moling that led stress management
trainings and seminars all over the
United States. At its peak Moling
was running 50 seminars a year and
spending a lot of time on the road. In 1997 Moling’s father fell ill and
he cut back on the traveling to spend
more time in Citrus County. He
resurrected The Music Connection and
turned it into a production company,
TMC began doing sound, staging and
lighting for events and productions. TMC has put on events for Verizon
Wireless with artists such as Fergie, the
Jonas Brothers and Wyclef Jean. In the middle of all of his career
projects, goals and advancements
Chris was running triathlons and
climbing mountains – literally. He
even skydived onto the North Pole!
He became involved with the Crystal
River Rotary 4th of July Triathlon. Triathlons and races are a lot of work. Moling was well acquainted with what
it took to run a race after spending years
running them as a competitor. Moling
saw a need in the community for a
race management company. In 1999
Moling formed DRC Sports. DRC
Sports to this day runs 5k’s, triathlons,
marathons and more all over the state
of Florida and in parts of Georgia. In 2004 Moling got another idea –
this one was a whopper. Along with
friend Chris Spinosa, Chris wanted to
do a coast-to-coast bicycle ride across
the United States. Since his father had
passed from lung cancer Chris decided
to do this ride to benefit the American
Lung Association. Spinosa and Moling flew to
California and completed the ride in a
little over a month. Biking around 100
miles each day they carefully planned
the course out. Anne Black prepared
a welcome home celebratory parade
in Inverness upon their arrival back on
this coast. Moling is a member of the high
pointers club, meaning that he has been
to the summit of the highest point in all
fifty states. His next goal is to make
it to the highest summits in all seven
continents. Last year he climbed Mt.
Kilimanjaro in Africa, he has already
reached the summits in North and
South America.

they will say about me.”, said honoree
Moling. “I have had the burden, or rather
privilege, of knowing Chris for over
twenty years. I have gathered a wide
range of material in that time – it’s
going to be a really fun night.” said
Royal on the Roast. The event is a fundraiser for the

Some boys want
to grow up to be
firefighters, pilots
or doctors. When
Blake Carnahan
was a young child
he knew what
he wanted to be
when he grew up;
a baseball umpire. 24 years later he
has made that dream a reality. Carnahan, a 2007 Crystal River High
School graduate left Citrus County
to attend college at the University of
Georgia. “Even though I had this dream
of becoming an umpire, I still wanted to
get a college education.”, he said. He
majored in Environmental Economics
& Management and graduated in 2011. After college graduation he was ready to
pursue his umpiring dream. In January of 2012, Blake applied to the
Wendelstedt Umpire School and was
one of 130 pupils to get accepted. The
five week course was located in Ormond
Beach. At the end of the course only
the top 14 students were chosen for
placement as umpires. Carnahan made
the cut.
The next stop in the journey was an
evaluation camp ran by the Professional
Baseball League Umpire Corporation
(PBUC). This took place in March of
2012, once evaluated Blake and the other
chosen hopefuls from umpire school
waited for their placement in the minor
leagues. There are six classifications of baseball
before the Minor Leagues. Starting with
the rookie level and then Class A short
season, Class A, Class A Advanced, AA,
and AAA. Carnahan’s first umpiring gig
was with the New York-Penn League
during the Class A short season in the
summer of 2012. The New York-Penn
League covered seven states and had
fourteen teams. The Class A short season
is affiliated with the Farm League and is
a building block for umpires and players
looking to work their way up through
the leagues. Carnahan was even able to
umpire in the New York-Penn League
Championship Series last September. In the middle of each season and at the
end of each season all the umpires are
evaluated. After the evaluations are
completed each of the umpires is ranked. Depending on the number of open
umpire slots in the next classification up,
umpires can be promoted. When Blake
reports for Spring Training in March, he
will be an umpire in the Class A South
Atlantic League. The South Atlantic
team also has fourteen teams from an
array of states; Georgia, South Carolina,
New Jersey and Maryland to name a few. Starting next month Carnahan will spend
the year traveling to games. Living out
of a suitcase and driving a provided
rental car, Carnahan is one year closer
to fulfilling his dream of being a Major
League umpire. “I know it can take over ten years before
I could be in a position to be a Major
League umpire, but I really love doing
this and I know what I want.”, said
Carnahan. Having only been an umpire
for less than a year Carnahan has already
advanced through the rookie and Class A
short season levels. Now in Class A ball
he is ready for the season and eagerly
looking forward to it. NFL players and other celebrities
host event for Weeki Wachee boy
Nick LaBarbara may not live in Citrus
County, but Citrus County is going to
support him. LaBarbara, a Weeki Wachee
native has been battling cancer for the
better part of his life. Diagnosed with
leukemia as a toddler LaBarbara spent
his childhood battling and overcoming
the disease. Last summer cancer attacked him
again, this time it was a brain tumor. After undergoing two more surgeries
LaBarbara is back on the road to recovery. His family however still is battling large
medical expenses. On Friday March 1, High Octane
Saloon will host “A Night out for Nick”
Celebrity Bartending event with several
former NFL football players and other
surprise guests. This will be the first
ever celebrity bartending event at High
Octane. High Octane Vice President
Cassandra Doty said that she and her
husband were friends with the athletic
director of Weeki Wachee High School
who told them about LaBarbara.
A golf tournament to benefit Nick
is planned for the Saturday after the
bartending event, March 2, so it was
the perfect time to do a fundraiser. The
celebrity bartenders include: Anthony
Becht (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), DuJuan
Harris (Green Bay Packers), Alex Smith
(Cleveland Browns) and Ricky Feacher
(Cleveland Browns). Attendees will be asked to pay a small
cover charge with the proceeds going
to support LaBarbara. All the tips the
players raise will also go towards the
cause. Guests are encouraged to bring
items to be signed with a donation. In addition to the NFL players Steve
Chamberland and Jimmy Hart from the
WWE are expected to attend. Hart is
known as the “Mouth of the South” and
is famous for being a WWE announcer. The NFL players and WWE stars will
be available for photo opportunities
throughout the night as well. The event will start at 9:00pm. Local
band “Bottoms Up” will be playing in
the back bar and DJ Doc will be spinning
in the front bar. Of course there will
be drink specials, giveaways and other
surprises. For anyone interested in playing in the
golf tournament which will be held at the

The Heart of Citrus: Foundation plans run to raise colon cancer awareness

colon cancer is one of the easier
cancers to survive from, almost 90%
of the cases are curable if caught early. Colonoscopies are recommended for

Debby was a teacher for decades. This

Café 105 Review
The Facts
Café 105
105 Line Ave.
Inverness, FL
352-341-1720
Mon through Fri – 8:30am –4:30pm
Sat – 11:00am – 9:00pm
When it comes to location, Café 105 could
hardly pick a better one. Located next to
Citrus Memorial Hospital, across the street
from Citrus High and Inverness Primary and
blocks from the School Board and County
Government Buildings Café 105 offers
breakfast, lunch, coffee and desserts daily. On Saturdays and special occasions they
serve dinner. The café which opened in the summer of
2012 is located in a small house that has been
renovated. The various rooms offer intimate
seating for those looking to escape the day
and enjoy a good meal. A finer grade of
food is served here, not your standard deli
sandwich on the go type of meal. Breakfast
offers
artisan
breakfast
sandwiches, fresh pastries, bagels, wraps and
a wide array of coffees. The Mediterranean
sandwich is popular; eggs with feta and
sundried tomatoes are served on a ciabatta
roll. The Veggie wrap comes with eggs,
eggplant, mushrooms and onions. Café 105
always uses fresh ingredients and uses local
produce whenever available. Lattes and
cappuccinos are among a few of the coffee
options you can drink while you eat or take
to-go. Lunch specials are featured daily but be
forewarned, they often sell out quickly. The
standard lunch menu features and array of
salads, hand pressed Panini’s, sandwiches
and flatbreads. For the indecisive eater take
advantage of the “Choose Two” option where
you can choose from a combination of salad,
half Panini and soup. Soups are made fresh
daily. Salads such as a Cobb, Chicken Tortellini,
and Caprese are always available. The
sandwich side of the menu features a Chicken
Pesto, California Club and Reuben to name a
few. Flatbreads topped with everything from
crimini mushrooms to shrimp are a solid
choice. A daily assortment of homemade desserts is
always available though varied. Traditional
Italian desserts such as cannoli’s and zeppoli’s
can be found next to Florida Orange Sunshine
cake and chocolate ganache cheesecake.
A recent addition to the café is Saturday
night dinner service. Two seating’s are
offered, one at 6:00pm and one at 8:00pm. Reservations are strongly encouraged. The
dinner menu features a good sampling of
items. From stuffed shrimp to lasagna rolls
to rack of lamb something to please every
foodie can be found. Give the Baked Feta
served with tomatoes, red onion and basil a
try as your appetizer. Only open for less than a year Café 105 is
gaining quite the crowd of regulars. Given the
location, fine food and charming atmosphere
it is quite easy to see why. Located at:

You’ve Been Spotted!
On Saturday February 9 Burkes of Ireland & Hot Heads the Art of
Hair joined forces to host a Locks of Love event.
The 2013 Miss Suwanne River Jam search took place at the Loft Bar
& Grill in Crystal River recently. Many ladies came out to try their
shot at becoming Miss Suwannee River Jam. It was a packed house
for the evening. Some of those who got spotted were (from top to
bottom):
Shannon Straight & Justin Branch
(Top) Amazing hair stylists Debbie Pittman (left) & Yvette Baldner
(right) donated their time and service to cut the hair from the donors.
(Bottom) Denine Dukek (left) with Baldner and Pittman pose with
Burkes bartender James Stevens. This is the fourth time that Stevens
has donated to Lock of Love.
Tara Goodloe, Kim Wright, & Brittney Owens
