Ebola continues to damage
tourism in rest of Africa
hough West Africa’s deadly Ebola
Tmedia’s
outbreak is slowly slipping beyond the
(and hence the general public’s)
gaze, the repercussions of the health
catastrophe continues to reverberate
throughout the travel world.
Business is hurting in most traditional African tourism locales due to fears of the disease and a general lack
of awareness by western consumers of just how far it is
from the affected countries of Guinea, Sierra Leone and
Liberia to popular travel destinations like Tanzania, Kenya
and South Africa.
“There are 55 countries in Africa and how
many are affected?”
asks Jason Barry, direc10

Kenya. “Most consumers don’t have any idea
how big Africa is.”
Barry, a Brit based in Arusha, Tanzania, reserves most
of his vitriol for the media, particularly the BBC, CNN
and Sky News, for fanning the hysteria of the “dreadful,”
but localized Ebola outbreak, which has claimed close to
6,000 lives in the West African countries so far.
But, as Barry pointed out at the recent World Travel

Market in London, the affected West
African countries are actually closer to
the UK and Western Europe than much of
Africa (see map).
“And the people from West Africa
don’t travel to East Africa, they’re too
poor,” he added, dispelling the notion
that disease was likely to spread across
the continent.
Barry welcomes the awareness brought
by the media to the crisis, but he complains that it “has gone into the realm
of entertainment.
“Africa needs longer-term solutions,”
he says, and not just pertaining to Ebola.
“120,000 people died of malaria in the last
two years... Where was the international
indignation about that?”
However, in the here and now, Barry
says, “Livelihoods of hundreds of thousands [of Africans working in the tourism
industry] are being affected. People are
being laid off...
“The Chinese have stopped travelling
because of their remembrance of SARS,
the Russians have stopped travelling
[because of the Ukraine war]...”
Business has been affected from North
America, but Barry says it’s not the cancellations that hurt (they can be rebooked), its
the unknown number of people who
choose not to book.
“If anything needs to be done, it’s more
positives,” he says. “And there’s so much
good news in Africa!”

0,000 bees recently
moved into new
quarters as Swissôtel
Bremen on Hillmannplatz began producing its own brand of
honey right on the
hotel’s roof. Since
August 2014, the hotel
has been producing
lime blossom honey
and mixed honey in
an attempt to offer
sustainable, regional
products to its guests.
Head Chef Jeffrey
Hoogstraaten says he
is excited that the new
addition to his kitchen
is helping improve the
environment. Swissôtel
Bremen is the first hotel in the centre of the
Hanseatic city to have
bee hives on its roof.
The two hives currently
in place are expected
to grow to 50,000 bees
each, for a total of
100,000 bees making
honey by next year.

SANDALS ROCKS TORONTO
AT ‘UNVEILINGS 2014’ EVENT
Sandals rolled into to Toronto last
week (Wednesday) at the end of a
“world tour” designed to bring its
message of love to travel agents. With
an aura more befitting rock stars than
hoteliers, the Toronto stop was the
culmination of “Unveilings 2014,” an
annual tour of the trade that now calls
in multiple cities in the US, UK and
Canada – including, this year, Halifax
and Ottawa. A crowd of 500 travel
agents and supplier partners turned
out for a lively night full of news (free
WiFi will be introduced at all resorts
next year; a new Red Lane-branded
skin care line of products will soon be
launched...); awards for top achievers;
trip giveaways; and sales tips and techniques (50% of all Sandals honeymooners use a travel agent).
‘No problem’
Sandals VP and former Canadian
chief Gary Sadler reminded the audience that Sandals is the only resort
company to have a full office in Canada
and that the company will do anything
“to get your business.” Sandals CEO
Adam Stewart stated that travel agents
are the lifeblood of the company and
that Sandals and Beaches will always
be dynamic and responsive to the
needs of both the trade and its guests.

LOS CABOS GETS
SUNQUEST THUMBS UP
Sunquest’s senior buying team has
visited Los Cabos to assess the situation with hotels following the damage
caused in September by Hurricane
Odile and says the “destination looks
great.” Cabo San Lucas is said to be
clean, the buildings and shops have
been repaired and are operational,
and the restaurants and bars are
open for business. The airport is
fully operational and welcoming
visitors, and any remaining repairs
are “merely cosmetic,” the team said.
Six of Sunquest’s Cabo properties are
now open, with others slated to open
later. The last to open will be a Meliá
scheduled to open in June.

• Broadway Week, from Jan. 20 to
Feb. 5 (tickets go on sale Jan. 9) and
Off-Broadway Week, from Feb. 23
to March 8 (tickets go on sale Feb. 9),
visitors and New Yorkers can enjoy
two-for-one tickets to nearly all theatrical productions.

OGOPOGO ADVENTURE TRAIL
OPENS AT BIG WHITE, BC
The Ogopogo Adventure Trail has
been introduced by Big White Ski
Resort, just outside of Kelowna in the
Monashee Mountains. This feature
has been built with kids in mind. They
start their runs by skiing through
the “mouth” of Ogopogo, the legendary sea monster that apparently lives
in nearby Lake Okanagan. The trail
continues down through arches that
mimic the shape of the monster.

York service – with a stopover in
Vancouver – after a 20-year absence.
It will operate flights four times per
week between Manila and New York,
stopping at YVR en route, starting
March 15, 2015. PAL’s strategy is to
focus heavily on the American market
in the near future. PAL is increasing its flights to San Francisco and

From five times a week in Honolulu,
it will now operate daily flights to the
destination.

NEW LOOK FOR
UNION STATION
VIA Rail Canada has announced
the completion of Winnipeg’s Union
Station upgrades. The $6-million
project took approximately 14
months and has given the 100-yearold station a renewed and modern
feel. The central rotunda, one of the
station’s most distinctive features,
was cleaned, repaired and repainted.
The restoration of the rotunda
emphasizes the station’s heritage
status, as its new look resembles that
of the original rotunda.
Upgrades
Significant upgrades were also made
to client facilities including the ticket
counter, washrooms and waiting areas.
Station accessibility was improved
with the installation of a new elevator between the waiting room and
the passenger boarding platform,
among other accessible amenities. The
historic train station was constructed
between 1908 and 1911 and was
designed by Warren and Wetmore,
the architects responsible for Grand
Central Terminal in New York City.
