Welcome to Millard South High School
Dear Millard South Community,
I think I have said this each month I’ve written this letter, but “where has the year gone?”
We are well into second semester and planning for next year. Please take time to read the
newsletter. It contains important information and recognizes students and staff. Here are
a few highlights:

Registration will take place this month. We are holding Advisement
Conferences on February 9 & 10 by appointment. Students have started the
process in PRIDE Time. Prior to your advisement appointment, it is important
that you and your child discuss courses for the upcoming school year. I cannot
stress enough the importance of your involvement, as parents, in this process.
The work and time we invest this spring will determine the success of our
master schedule. Students should select classes that are interesting,
challenging, and best prepare them for college and careers upon graduating
high school. A well-built master schedule is the key to student and teacher
engagement and results in higher achievement.
 There is no school for students on February 12, 13 & 16.
 We had approximately 300 students apply for the Early College High School
Program. We are super excited to start this program next school year. The
students selected for this program will be making history. This is the first
program like this in the State of Nebraska.
 Our students and staff worked extremely hard last semester and it showed.
Our percentage of 1’s increased, while our percentage of 5’s decreased. This
is a result of better instruction and requiring students to do the necessary
things to succeed. Now we need to focus on this semester along with scoring
well on NeSA Writing, Math, Science and Reading & and increasing our overall
ACT score. We have had a focus on ACT this year and will continue to increase
this focus in future years. We all must work together as a team to maintain
our level of excellence.
As always, please let us know if you have any questions. The Millard South staff is ready to
serve you and your students. Millard South High School is committed to providing an
excellent high school experience and it takes all key stakeholders to make that happen.
Thank you for all of your support!

I wanted to share with you this great picture of all the
students that attended the conference (American
Astronomical Society) for our astronomy research
project. These students came together from all parts of the
country and worked hard to produce the results on the
poster you see behind them. They did a fantastic job, and I
could not be any prouder.
Representing Millard South are Ethan Bucksbee, Matthew
Clarke, and Shailyn Altepeter (all on the left side of the

CLASS RANK, SCHOLARSHIPS, &
COLLEGE ADMISSION
Juniors are finishing what may be the most critical
semester of their high school career. Many
colleges will be accepting students based upon
their class rank & performance as it stands at the
end of their junior year! Remember, class rank is
not updated until the middle of January of your
senior year. Many scholarships will also use your
rank as it stands at the end of the junior year.
We are moving toward the peak (usually early
March is the highest volume) of scholarship
application processing.
Parents are
encouraged to assist their senior in obtaining the
applications that flood the Counseling Center at this
time. The new scholarships that are arriving are listed in
the Weekly Guidance News emailed out on Friday of
each week. Encourage your senior to check their
Naviance account.
Reminder…
We are open on Tuesday nights until 8 pm.
We encourage all college bound juniors to take the ACT (and SAT if
needed) in the second semester of their junior year. This year all
current juniors will be given the ACT on Tuesday, April 28th. This test will
be paid for by the district. Juniors will then have the option to take the
ACT again in June at their own expense. As they look forward into their
senior year, they will have the opportunity to test in September, October
and/or December. Colleges & scholarship organizations use the best
score. Therefore, there is nothing to lose and everything to gain by
testing during second semester. This will provide an opportunity to
retake at least once, and perhaps more. Becoming familiar with the
content and format of the test questions is one of the best preparations
for the test. Please pay special attention to the admissions tests
required at selective schools. Many schools accept the ACT in lieu of
the SAT, but require SAT subject tests. See the school websites to
determine which test or tests are most appropriate for you to take.
Links to register for the ACT and SAT are available on the Millard South
Counseling Center homepage.

MILLARD PUBLIC SCHOOLS, THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT!
Search the app store for Millard Public Schools today
Did you know Millard Public Schools is mobile? The Millard Mobile App is
powered by ParentLink and offers fast access to multiple resources all in one place.
Anyone is welcome to download the app to access the district and school
calendars, breakfast and lunch menus, social media, sports scores, contact
information and more. The app is available for free for both Apple and Android
mobile devices. Simply search “Millard Public Schools” in the iTunes and Google
Play stores. Have a Windows phone or prefer to look at the app on your computer?
Easy! Just go to https://mpsomaha.parentlink.net/m.
The MPS Mobile app lets you select the schools you want to follow, the sports,
calendars and more. This tool is especially powerful for families. All parents and
guardians should receive a welcome letter a few days after they enroll their
children into Millard schools. The letter will include log in and password
information so the app will be personalized to them, allowing quick access to
student schedules, grades and library books currently checked out. For those hardto-find library books hiding somewhere in the house, parents will enjoy the app’s
picture of the cover of the books!
Millard Public Schools can also be found on our blog at www.proud2bmps.com,
on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/MillardPublicSchools and on Twitter
@MillardPS. All of these are easily accessible on the new MPS Mobile App. For
more information about the new MPS Mobile App, contact the district
communications at [email protected] and at 402.715.8200.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
With flu season upon us there are some things that can
be done to help reduce the chance of getting/spreading
this disease.

Stay home when you are sick. If possible, stay home from
work, school, and errands when you are sick.

Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away after use and wash
your hands. If a tissue is not available, cover your mouth
and nose with your sleeve, not your hand.

Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially
after you cough or sneeze. If soap and water are not
available, use an alcohol-based hand rub.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs
spread this way.

Clean and disinfect surfaces or objects. Clean and
