RAC project,
VA Medical Center Laundry-Dietetics Building,
receives National ABC Award
Roy Anderson Corp‘s work on the VA Medical Center LaundryDietetics Building in Biloxi, Miss., has earned the company
a National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award
from Associated Builders and Contractors in the Federal
Government $10-$100 Million Category. Representatives
from the company received the award March 2 during ABC’s
26th annual Excellence in Construction Awards celebration
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
“Roy Anderson Corp earned this Excellence in Construction
Pyramid Award through their dedication to safety, quality
craftsmanship and teamwork and Associated Builders and
Contractors is pleased to honor them,” said 2016 ABC
National Chair David Chapin, president of Willmar Electric
Service, Lincoln, Neb. “From start to finish, Roy Anderson
Corp demonstrated a commitment to innovation and high
quality construction in their work on Laundry-Dietetics
Building, a commitment that is clearly evident in the finished
product.”
This 81,000 sf building consists of a steamless laundry, a
dietetics facility, as well as office and storage space. The
building operates utilizing both electricity and green power
generated by thermal and photovoltaic energy sources.
The green energy consumption and management alternate
based on availability and switches over automatically based
on the automation and “smart building” functions designed
and built into the project. This high-end, state of the art
“steamless” laundry facility is the first of its kind constructed
for the service of the Department of Veteran Affairs.

The Excellence in Construction Awards program is the
industry’s leading competition, developed to honor
innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects.
The award honors all construction team members, including
the contractor, owner, architect and engineer. The winning
projects, selected from entries submitted from across the
nation, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique
challenges overcome, completion time, workmanship,
innovation, safety and cost.
A panel of industry experts served as the competition’s
judges. This year’s panel included representatives from the
Design-Build Institute of America, Engineering News-Record,
Construction Users Roundtable, the National Association of

RAC, UMMC mark highpoint
in School of Medicine construction
Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant helped celebrate a
milestone in the construction of the emerging School
of Medicine during a “topping-out” ceremony at the
University of Mississippi Medical Center. Touting the
economic and health care implications of a more
spacious, state-of-the-art medical school, Bryant
was among some 100 dignitaries who watched
as a crane hoisted a structural beam to the top of
the building, signifying it has reached its maximum
height. Governor Bryant, the RAC team, medical
students and representatives of UMMC signed the
beam before it was lifted, a construction tradition.
“This new medical school will have a $1.7 billion
impact on our state by 2025 and will help create
a support system of 19,000 - that’s 19,000
jobs created,” Bryant said. The 151,569 sf, fivestory building will help advance Bryant’s goals of
increasing the number of physicians working in
Mississippi and boosting the state’s health care
economy. “Bringing one physician into a community
has a $2 million impact,” he said. “It is the most
effective economic development opportunity we
have in the State of Mississippi.”
Dr. LouAnn Woodward, UMMC vice chancellor for
health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine,
thanked Bryant for “being a great champion” of
the effort to build the new school and ultimately
providing greater access to health care for more
of the state’s residents, particularly those in rural
areas. “We are on a mission to train Mississippians
to take care of Mississippians in this state,”
Woodward said. She also thanked her predecessor
at UMMC, Dr. James Keeton, for his dedication to
the construction project, as well as to the crew of
Roy Anderson Corp. This new space will enable the
School of Medicine to enlarge its incoming class
size from 135 students to 165. Medical students will
begin classes in the new facility in the Fall of 2017.

CONVERSATION
COMMUNICATION
SUPERINTENDENTS
GUY SHUMAN
JT LIVACCARI
BRYAN HARTLEY
GARY TAYLOR
ON PERFORMANCE & FINISHING STRONG
ON DAILY REPORTING
Guy Shuman firmly believes PERFORMANCE is the most
important thing to monitor on a daily basis. Performance of
subcontractors meeting project timelines allows a project
the opportunity to be successful from day one. Setting up
critical milestone activities and maintaining timelines are
critical to completing jobs on time. Guy is certain we can
finish any project strong as long as we take care of the dayto-day duties.
Guy states, “Daily reporting is critical to PERFORMANCE.
It is about taking the good with the bad. It is never a good
idea to paint a clean and perfect picture in daily reports. It
is best to state the facts and nothing but the facts. Leave
your personal opinion out of your daily reports and include
anything you feel may have or had an impact on schedule
or cost, including safety concerns. If you had a conversation
and feel it would affect any of these items and you did not
document it in another way, then it should be in your daily
report.”
JT Livaccari considers the front end planning of a project the
most critical part. The entire team should be involved in the
planning, then carry it out and fine tune it as necessary. This
mind set should be maintained throughout the course of the
project - start strong, continue strong and finish strong. The
ultimate goal is to deliver a successful and safe project.
Bryan Hartley states, “Beginning a project strong shows
leadership and sets the tone for the subcontractors and
employees. Start strong, finish strong. You want to develop
an owner relationship to be a preferred contractor which will
lead to additional work. We control our own destiny.”
Gary Taylor says challenges to performance can come
in many forms such as incomplete design documents,
schedule, and weather to name a few. To always finish on
time and within budget means a lot to a Superintendent but
to have a satisfied owner is just as important.
12
ROY ANDERSON CORP // RAC.COM
For JT, daily reporting is a huge cog in the project wheel. It
not only records the history of the majority, if not all of the
activities, it also makes you look at smaller activities that
otherwise may get overlooked in the course of a busy day.
It is very important all management and supervision of every
project team be timely and consistent with their reports.
Bryan expressed how difficult it is to remember every item
at the end of a project. No one can remember day-to-day
details. These reports are crucial to record the history of
every project.
Ever wonder what your Superintendent is thinking?
If you would like to know, just ask. We did!
Beginning a project strong shows leadership
and sets the tone for the subcontractors and employees.
Start strong, finish strong.
ENSURING THE SAFETY OF OUR EMPLOYEES
TOPPING OUT
To ensure the safety of our employees, Guy walks his project
at least two or three times a day and verifies, not only status
of activities, but that procedures are in place to perform the
work safely. The Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) form is a great
way to monitor procedures. During these walks, a review
of Subcontractors JHA is great way to see if they have
identified any potential hazards in their respective work areas
and taken the necessary steps to minimize potential hazards.
Gary expresses that as a Superintendent, reaching the
topping out of a structure is a great achievement. It is a good
feeling but is short lived as we have to dig in our heels to get
to the finish line of a completed, successful project.
Gary discusses our activities and our environment each and
every day. He ensures our people have the proper PPE. It is
vital to be sure workers have what they need to work safe.
Gary says, “I like each and every person I work with, and I
want them to go home to their families every day. Safety is
of daily importance.”
Bryan states walking the job and constant vigilance are key
to a safe project. Milestones for accident free work days
and appreciation shown through lunches and drawings are
important.
JT looks at safety as if he was performing an activity himself.
If he would not feel comfortable with a task, he would not
expect or let any of our people perform that task.
JT states, “While topping is the end of a critical path activity,
that’s all it is. The ultimate milestone that everyone involved
should strive for is the completion of a successful project.”
MEMORABLE PROJECTS
Bryan focused mostly on concrete and formwork at the
beginning of his career so when he was assigned to the
original Grand Casino Hotel from start to finish he was able to
learn more which is why this is his most memorable project.
He believes there are advantages and value to being involved
in project from start to finish. Bryan states, “From laying out
to finishes, you take ownership of every aspect.”
For Guy, it was working at Disneyland and building Mickey’s
Toontown and how it prepared him for future thematic
construction. For JT, it was the logistical challenges of
Children’s Hospital New Orleans. For Gary it was the 2001
Mississippi State University Stadium Addition; it was tough
and fast tracked. Gary said “It’s also pretty neat when your
project is on ESPN.”

Do you know what causes heart disease
in women? What about the survival rate?
Or whether women of all ethnicities share
the same risk? The fact is: Heart disease
is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in

one woman every minute! But it doesn’t
affect all women alike, and the warning
signs for women aren’t the same in men.

STAND DOWN
RAC stands with National Safety Council /OSHA on fall safety
In 2014, construction worker deaths increased 5%, to 792.
More than 36% of those deaths were caused by falls, and
serious injuries from falls number in the thousands every
year. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA), with support from the National Safety Council (NSC)
and dozens of other groups, asks employers to discuss fall
protection and safety when working from heights to prevent
falls during Fall Safety Stand Down week.
What is the National Safety Stand-Down?
The program was originally a two-year effort, launched
on Workers Memorial Day in 2012, to raise awareness
of preventing fall hazards in construction. But it was so
successful, it continues annually. This year’s Fall Safety
Stand-Down was held May 2-6 with tens of thousands of
employers nationwide and more than a million workers
participating. Roy Anderson Corp had many jobsites
participate such as Gulfport High School pictured above.
