Kindergarten Enrolments for 2013
Kindergarten enrolments are now being accepted for
2013. Please advise friends, neighbours and relatives
that enrolment forms may be obtained from the front
office. Please note that the date of birth must be
verified before enrolment can be completed. A birth
certificate, passport or record of birth will satisfy this
requirement. It is also necessary to obtain current
immunisation details (in the form of a certificate, not
the blue book) as these are required for school record
cards.
Kindergarten Information Night will be held on
Thursday 13th September.
Jenny Walker
Principal
These awards will be presented at the next
assembly.

From the Deputy Principal ……
Whooping Cough
Each year, The NSW Department of Health sends a
warning re whooping cough or Pertussis. We haven‘t
had any diagnosed cases at Kellyville recently,
however, it can be a life threatening illness,
particularly to babies, so parents need to be aware
of the symptoms and Identify, Protect and Prevent.
Whooping cough in babies can lead to pauses in
normal breathing, pneumonia, feeding problems,
weight loss, seizures, brain damage and in some
cases, death. It can also be a severe illness in older
children and adults.
Whooping cough usually begins with a blocked or
runny nose, tiredness, mild fever and a cough. The
cough gets worse and severe bouts of uncontrollable
coughing can develop. Coughing bouts can be
followed by vomiting, choking or taking a big
gasping breath which causes a whooping sound.
Some newborns may not cough at all but they can
stop breathing and turn blue. Older children and
adults may just have a cough that lasts for many
weeks. They may not have the whoop.
Whooping cough is spread when an infected person
coughs bacteria into the air which can be inhaled
by people nearby. If they are not treated early,
people with whooping cough are infectious in the
first three weeks of their illness. Whooping cough
spreads easily through families, childcare centres
and schools. Infectious children are restricted from
going to pre-school and school.
Babies need to be immunised at 2 months, 4 months
and 6 months. A booster is needed at 4 years of age. A
booster for adults is recommended for:
Both parents when they are planning a pregnancy or
just after the baby is born.
Other adult household members, grandparents and
carers of infants under 12 months of age
Adults working with young children, especially health
care and child care workers.
For a limited time, a free booster is available from
GP’s for new parents, grandparents and carers of
babies under 12 months.

Education Week
Thank you to all of the parents who attended our
Open Morning yesterday for Education Week. The
children thoroughly enjoyed showing parents and
grandparents around the school and I noted that
our wonderful gardens received quite a lot of
attention.
Peter Pan is our very exiting event for the next 2
evenings and then of course we are participating in
the Pulse Performance at the Opera House on
Thursday evening. Education Week will close with
our final performance of Peter Pan on Friday
evening.
Our staff at Kellyville are extremely
dedicated to your children and they have worked
very hard to organise these events. Please support
us by purchasing tickets for the performances if you
haven‘t already done so.

Library News ……
Every year since 1945, the Children‘s Book Council of
Australia has hosted Children‘s Book Week to honor
and celebrate the work of Australian authors and
Illustrators. The 2012 Book Week theme ‗Champions
Read‘ invites schools to reflect upon the benefits of
reading and to promote a reading-rich culture. This is
particularly relevant in a world where reading is in
fierce competition with so many other pastimes,
especially those dependent on technology.
On Thursday 26th July students from Kellyville Public
School enjoyed a visit by Swifts Netball NSW champion
Sam May and Paralympian Swimmer Annabelle
Williams.
Both
sporting
champions
provided
inspirational advice on what it takes to become a
Champion, answered questions about their personal
sporting journeys and enjoyed the special guests
reading Bob Graham‘s ―A Bus Called Heaven‖.
Antibiotics are used to treat whooping cough in the
early stages and can help prevent spreading the
illness to others. After 5 days of antibiotics you are
no longer infectious. People who are not treated
early can spread the infection in the first 3 weeks of
their illness.
Anyone can get whooping cough. Immunisation
reduces the risk of infection but immunity fades
over time. You can still get whooping cough even if
you‘ve been immunised.
