Five men of the Diocese of Trenton ordained to transitional deacons
A budding political operative, a long-distance trucker, a teller and a coffee barista are just some
of the former occupations that the Diocese of Trenton’s five new transitional deacons left behind before joining the seminary to pursue theological studies for the priesthood. The men
reached a milestone in their formation May 16, when they were ordained transitional deacons by Bishop David M.
O’Connell, C.M., during a Mass celebrated in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton.
Ordination as a transitional deacon generally occurs after a seminarian has completed at least three years of study
in theology, and takes place one year before priestly ordination. As deacons, the five men are now ordinary ministers of Baptism, and are able to preside at weddings, assist the priest at Mass, proclaim the Gospel and preach, as
well as preside at wakes and funeral services. In addition to their diaconate assignments (referenced below), the
five will spend the next year completing their formation in their respective seminaries.
The following new deacons were ordained:
Mr. Gregg Leo Loreno Abadilla, 28, whose home parish is now Sacred Heart, Trenton, was born and raised in the
Philippines. He will serve his diaconate year in St. Mary Parish, Barnegat. Deacon Abadilla previously had summer assignments in the parishes of Sacred Heart; Corpus Christi, Willingboro; St. William the Abbot, Howell;
St. Alphonsus, Hopewell, and Ascension, Bradley Beach.
Mr. Christopher J. Colavito, 36, is a native of Toms River, who is now a member of St. Barnabas Parish, Bayville.
During his diaconate year, he is assigned to St. Aloysius Parish, Jackson. Deacon Colavito previously had summer assignments with the New Jersey Catholic Conference in Trenton; St. Barnabas Parish, and Our Lady of
Good Counsel Parish, Moorestown.
Mr. Richard M. Osborn, 27, was born in Long Branch and is a member of St. Jerome Parish, West Long Branch. His
diaconate assignment will be spent in St. Charles Borromeo Parish, Cinnaminson. Deacon Osborn previously
held summer assignments in the parishes of Holy Cross, Rumson; St. Theresa, Little Egg Harbor, and St. Ann,
Keansburg.
Mr. John Michael Patilla, 26, of the Philippines, has taken Sacred Heart in Trenton as his home parish. During his
diaconate year, he will serve in St. James Parish, Red Bank. Deacon Patilla previously served summer assignments in Epiphany Parish, Brick, and St. James Parish.
Mr. Daniel McKee Price, 43, born in Traverse City, Mich., and raised in Maryland, calls St. Paul Parish in Princeton
his home. His diaconate year assignment will take him to St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, Spring Lake. Deacon Price’s previous summer assignments include the parishes of St. Paul; Our Lady Queen of Peace,
Hainesport, and St. Catharine Parish, Holmdel.

Study Update
The Diocese of Trenton has embarked on a historic $75 million endowment campaign. This campaign provides an
opportunity for Saint Aloysius Parish to address our extraordinary local needs while helping our Diocese build and
prepare for the future. Careful consideration and thoughtful planning are required for any successful growth however, so I am seeking advice and input from parishioners on our ability to secure the necessary funding. To that
end, we have retained Changing Our World, Inc., a nationally known consulting firm, to conduct a parish-wide
planning study.
Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in the study by completing our confidential survey. To learn
more about our plans and to share your thoughts, please visit www.ChangingOurWorld.com/SaintAloysius.
Thank you to those who have already responded - over 100 surveys have been completed.
Your participation is instrumental in helping Saint Aloysius Parish formulate the best plan to move forward in addressing our parish’s future. Please do not hesitate to contact Fr. Bambrick at any point with questions about the
study.

good way to fulfill that obligation and help out a great cause. Buddies for Softball, Soccer, Basketball and
Yoga are needed. The Challenger Program enables children and adults with physical and/or developmental disabilities to participate in team sports. For more information please call Cassie at 732-610-9869.
Please Keep St. Aloysius Parish in mind during your summer travels. We know you might
be out of town for a few Sundays this summer but with online giving you can contribute
from wherever you are… you can even set up payments in advance if you like! And when
you give online, it helps us make our budget, even when attendance is low. For the Online
Giving Link visit www.saintaloysiusonline.org.
Every week an email is sent out to all registered parishioners who have provided us with an email
address. This email contains an electronic copy of the current bulletin plus links to other events
happening within the parish. If you are not receiving this email but would like to, please send
your email address to Olive at [email protected] or call 732-370-0500 ext. 220.

May 24, 2015 - Pentecost Sunday
Breaking Open the Word at Home by Sister Eileen Ivory, O.P.
Today we celebrate the feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles.
They gathered together to support each other very aware that the physical Jesus had gone from them. We can
imagine them asking each other “What do we do now?” “Where do we go from here?” The images that describe
what happened next are powerful…driving wind and tongues of fire. Something big is happening; things will no
longer be the same…the apostles will no longer be the same. They will have direction; they will be determined to
share the Jesus they knew. They will step out among the people and proclaim bravely that Jesus is the Messiah.
Kids: Have you ever prayed to the Holy Spirit? Because we speak of the Spirit as having Wisdom its good to pray
when wisdom is needed…big decisions, tests in school, help to choose the good thing.
Teens: We tend to pray to Jesus or to God but forget the Third Person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. When faced
with difficult choices (probably every day) ask the Spirit to make clear to you which way to go. Once you know
what is best also ask the Holy Spirit to give you the strength to actually do it.
Adults: The world today is filled with many hard questions, difficult choices. I think we don’t call upon the Holy
Spirit frequently enough. When faced with how to deal with the hard stuff, why not make turning to the Holy
Spirit our automatic response.
The St. Aloysius Health Care Ministry would like to share some important health
information regarding bug bites. Bugs can spread a number of diseases. Many of
these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce
your risks by taking steps to prevent bug bites.
What type of insect repellent should I use?
For Protection against Ticks and Mosquitos - Use a repellent that contains 20% or more of DEET for protection
that lasts up to several hours. Products containing DEET include Off!, Cutter, Sawyer, and Ultrathon.
For Protection against Mosquitos only - Products with one of the following active ingredients can also help prevent mosquito bites. Higher percentages of active ingredient provide longer protection. Deet, Picaridin (Cutter
Advance, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus), Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE-Repel and Off) or PMD. IR3535-Skin So
Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition and SkinSmart.
- Always Follow product direction and reapply as directed.
- Consider using permethrin-treated clothing and gear. You can buy pre-treated clothing and gear or treat them
yourself (follow product information carefully).
- Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
What other steps should I take to prevent bug bites?
Prevent mosquito bites - Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeved shirts, long pants and hats. Stay and sleep
in screened or air-conditioned rooms. Use a bed net if the area you are sleeping in is exposed to the outdoors.
Prevent Tick Bites - Cover exposed skin by wearing long sleeved shirts, long pants and hats. Tuck in shirts, tuck
pants into socks and wear closed shoes. Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass brush and leaves.
What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?
Mosquitos - avoid scratching and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce itching.
Ticks - bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors. Check entire body and remove ticks properly.
Also check pets and belongings.
