LEANDER H. MCNELLY—
CAPTAIN, TEXAS RANGERS _part 2
By Dr. Andy Straks/ ICCAN Intr’l Director &
Superintendent
“Whatever you do, do well. For when you go to
the grave, there will be no work or planning or
knowledge or wisdom.” (Ecc. 9:10)
By the late 1870s, Fisher had acquired a
reputation for being fast with a gun. In
1878, an argument between him and
four Mexican vaqueros ended with one
being clubbed with a branding iron, one
shot and killed as he attempted to draw
against the gunman, and two shot and
killed who merely sat on a nearby fence
and watched.
Fisher was well-known as a trouble
maker, but was well-liked by the
ranchers and homesteaders in south
Texas. He was arrested several times,
but each time the charges were dropped
because no witnesses could be found to
testify against him.
Though McNelly made several
unsuccessful attempts to remove Fisher
from the living population of Texas, the
job was done for him in March of 1884,
when a hail of bullets took the outlaw
down in Turner
Hall Opera House
in San Antonio. It was later established
that he had been shot thirteen times.
Many of their greatest triumphs were
performed in defiance of orders or on
self-appointed missions, and the Little
McNellies often met with strong
opposition for their questionable tactics.
However, they are credited with being
one of the major forces in making Texas
safe to live and raise a family during its
early and turbulent years.
Up to and including today, the men who
served under Leander McNelly have
enjoyed an unparalleled record of
success in the annals of one of the
greatest bodies of men in American law
enforcement - the Texas
Rangers.

* April 1: "The salt would be gone. There just wouldn't
be any flavor. There wouldn't be much meaning
left."
--Jack Schaefer (Shane)
ECHOES FROM THE
CAMPFIRE
From Don Adkisson’s Campfire Messages
Page
* April 6: "This was a man's life; a part of its fullness--lying
and listening to the loneliness of the hills break before the noises
of the little night travelers to hear the abrasive creaking of their
feet and the sibilant movement of their bodies through grass; to
see small eyes winklessly shining; to hear the 'thunk' of a beaver's
broad tail on the mud, and to see the v-shaped ripples on the still
water where a mink swam silently, or a water ouzel cruised."
--Ernest Haycox (Saddle and Ride)
"He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the
wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his
servants."
--Psalm 104:3-4 (NIV)
————————————
* April 4:
"Sometimes responsibility had an uncomfortable fit,
like a right boot on a left foot."
--Elmer Kelton (The Day the
Cowboys Quit)
"I alone am not able to carry all this people, because it is too
burdensome for me."
--Numbers 11:14 (NASB)
———————————
"You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste
(its strength, its quality), how can its saltiness be restored?
It is not good for anything any longer but to be thrown out
and trodden underfoot by men." --Matthew 5:13 (AMPC)
———————————
* March 31: "It made him feel small and frightened, knowing
that God's power was infinite and beautiful, that He was truly
working to provide for all of his creatures."
-- Bobby
Cavazos (The Cowboy From the Wild Horse Desert)
"It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, And its
inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the
heavens like a curtain, And spreads them out like a tent to
dwell in."
--Isaiah 40:22 (NKJV)
———————————* March 30: "We should have talked about dignity and
freedom; those things count for more than money. Money's
soon spent, and when it's gone it leaves no mark. But when a
man loses dignity, that leaves a mark on him that
stays."
--Elmer Kelton (The Day the Cowboys Quit)
"For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their
own great folly."
--Proverbs 5:23 (NIV)
For the Lord God will help Me;
Therefore I will not be disgraced;
Therefore I have set My face like a flint,
And I know that I will not be ashamed.
Isaiah 50:7
COWBOY HUMOR
By Mike Vaughn
There was a farmer that always used scripture
to justify his deeds. One day a horse trader
came through the country and the farmer
traded him a horse that had hives. After the
trader went on his way, the wife asked her
husband, Now, I know you always find
scripture to justify what you do. Just what
scripture will you use to justify trading that sick
horse to that man?"
"He was a stranger and I took him in," he replied.
