POOL CONCERT SERIES: MADDIE GEORGI ON SU NDAY, AUGUST 11
Back by Popular Demand - Maddie Georgi! Please stop by the pool on Sunday, August 11, from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. and enjoy the music of Maddie Georgi.
Named one of the Post Gazette’s “Young Pittsburghers To Watch”, Maddie Georgi is
exactly that. Her latest EP Glory Bound was released in January, 2013, and as the title
alludes, she has a very bright future ahead of her.
Her first EP Go was released in 2009 and its release propelled Maddie to cross paths
with Country Music Television (CMT) on several occasions. Competing in CMT’s Music
City Madness competition, her song “Gone Away Again” took second place out of
60,000 entries. CMT liked Maddie’s voice so much; they used her voice for the theme
song to one of their sitcoms, Working Class.
In 2010, Maddie participated in the New York Songwriter’s Circle, further showcasing
her voice and song writing ability. Her song “Go” earned her second place and the opportunity to perform at The Bitter End,
a bestowed music landmark nestled in New York City’s Greenwich Village.
No matter where her music carries her, Maddie is always deeply rooted in her family and hometown and is a regular on the
Pittsburgh stages. Local performances include the Three Rivers Arts Festival; the Three Rivers Regatta; and concerts at
venues like Hartwood Acres, Stage AE, Club Café, Market Square, and the New Hazlett Theater. Maddie has also received rave reviews for her rendition of The National Anthem, which she has performed for Pittsburgh Panthers, Pirates,
and Steeler games.
Her new EP Glory Bound is infused with the passion and soulful sounds like those of Maroon 5 or Adele. Influences such
as KT Tunstall; Grace Potter; Stevie Nicks; and Carrie Underwood can also be recognized and appreciated throughout the
EP. Glory Bound also features songs co-written by Maddie and Pittsburgh favorite, Bill Deasy, offering listeners songs that
are thoughtfully-crafted and very relatable.
Although music is Maddie’s first love, she also remains committed to the importance of education and balances performing
and the work of a full-time student with stride. A junior, studying Communications and Economics at Allegheny College, no
matter where she is in her life, Maddie is bound to keep writing and performing with the hope that her music will always
speak to the hearts and minds of her listeners.

THE VUE FROM THE GREENS
Mother Nature has continued to leave her mark on the golf season; July showed a wide variety of
conditions across the board in weather with record rainfall amounts, to extreme heat and near record lows to
close out the month. The greens department spent 14 days repairing bunkers following rain events and
rough mowers were constantly in action as we tried to stay ahead of the game. The middle of the month
was busy with the Club Championship and hosting the Ladies Western Championship, which served as an
excellent opportunity to showcase the property. The SWAT picnic was an enjoyable event and I hope that
everyone enjoyed the golf course and putting course on #11 that evening.
The golf course remains in good condition despite all the changes in the weather. We did experience a few areas of scald in the fairways and approaches as a result of the saturated conditions and high
temperatures. Scald is created from the heat boiling the roots when experiencing field capacity conditions
following high amounts of rain, this could be a result of standing water in lows and from areas that are slower
to drain than others, an example being #14 fairway. The positive is that it allowed me to address the property from a drainage standpoint and point key areas to work on this fall and next spring so we can build towards the future. The 8 days of heat around the Ladies Western served as a great training tool for the staff
with hand watering and monitoring water management as we experienced both dry conditions and periods of
wet wilt.
The forecast for August is great and the cooler temperatures should provide excellent playing conditions throughout the month as we approach fall. Towards the middle of the month, we plan to start seeding
certain areas of the rough to incorporate turf type Tall Fescue into high traffic areas, thin areas and areas
that have been damaged by Summer Patch due to the heat and rainfall on the existing stand of Kentucky
Bluegrass. Areas of the intermediate (“First Cut”) will also be evaluated and seeded with Perennial
Ryegrass to improve density and turf quality.
I’m happy to relay that Steve Poprocky came home from Harmarville South during the end of July.
His spirits continue to be high and he is continuing to improve on a daily basis. As always, I look forward to
seeing you on the course!

JIM HENRY
The 2013 Jim Henry SSWAT is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, September 6th and 7th.
The Jim Henry SWAT is open to SWAT members. The Jim Henry is played from the blue tees (not the “new” black
tees) and, historically, the greens are prepared and the pins are set to present Longue Vue’s best golf challenge.
Accordingly, eligibility is limited to members with a handicap of 12 or less and it is recommended that guests be of
at least that level of playing ability. The maximum strokes any player may receive is 6. New this year will be an
enhanced emphasis on the four man SWAT games and pairing requests will only be accommodated for Friday play.
The charge for the 2013 Jim Henry SWAT is $320, and includes the following:







There will be shotgun starts at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, September 6th, and 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 7th.
All play will be in foursomes.
The format of play will be as follows:
Jim Henry Tournament Format: Better ball of partners at ½ handicap, with a maximum of six (6) shots. Prizes will
be awarded for the best 18 holes of 36. All play will be from the blue tees. Plus handicaps will be played at onehalf thereof, rather than at scratch.
A $10 per man SWAT will be held on Friday and a $20 per man Swat on Saturday. Friday’s SWAT event will be
best 2 of 4, ½ handicap. Saturday’s event will be best ball on par 3’s, best 2 balls on par 4’s, and best 3 balls on
par 5’s at ½ handicap. On Friday, there will be a $10 per man closest to the pin shootout with qualifying on holes
#10, #12, and #16, with the five closest balls on each participating in a one shot shootout on #18 following Friday’s
play. Winner takes all. There will also be a $10 per man skins game for each day. Each member must pay $120
for these events in advance (covering member and guest for both days) to Tony Rocco in the Men’s Locker Room
before play begins Friday.
There will be a pari-mutuel betting on the Friday and Saturday rounds as well as the Jim Henry two-day event.
There will be an optional hat pool for each day’s play at a cost of $20 per team each day, which should also be paid
to Tony Rocco before Friday’s play begins.
If the Jim Henry event results in a tie for first place, there will be a sudden death playoff starting on #1 to determine
the winner.
Award Ceremony
After Saturday’s round, record your scores at the scoreboard. Beer and light snacks will be provided while scores
are being tabulated. Trophies will be awarded to the winners.

JIM HENRY (CONTINUED)
Sign-up Procedure - New Procedure This Year
The field will be limited to forty-eight (48) two-man teams. If the event is oversubscribed, total team handicap and Jim
Henry tenure will be used to determine the field. The sign-up period begins immediately and will end August 30.
Please sign up by both phoning the pro shop at 412-793-2375, and speaking directly with Steve Antenucci or by email to Steve, [email protected], providing your guest’s name, home club and handicap index. You will
receive a phone call confirmation from Steve Antenucci or an e-mail confirmation from Steve if you sign-up via Steve’s e-mail. Clubessential online tee time registration is not being used for the Jim Henry.
Since total team handicap is a primary cutoff factor in an oversubscribed field, you must include your guest’s name
and handicap index with your entry in order to be eligible.
We are looking forward to an outstanding event. Please direct any inquiries regarding the 2013 Jim Henry to Rick
Ban, Jim McBride or Ben Rathfon.
F. C. SNYDER SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT - 21ST YEAR!
Save the date! The 21st F. C. Snyder Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for
Saturday, August 10th.
In 1993, Mrs. Pat Snyder started and continues to support the F. C. Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of her late husband, Franklin, a long time club member who loved Longue
Vue and particularly our employees. Through the ensuing years, the Fund has greatly helped
dozens of our employees with their education; including caddies, waitresses, pro shop, locker
room, greens and pool workers. The F. C. Snyder Scholarship Fund has given out over
$550,000.00 in scholarship aid based on club employment, need, diligence, and grades.
On Saturday, August 10, 2013, we will hold our 21st Annual F.C. Snyder Golf Tournament, the
keystone of our fund raising. Those who have played in the past know what a great day it is
and we hope they will sign up again. This year’s fee is $135.00 which includes a continental
breakfast, golf, cart, golf course refreshments, a delicious lunch and great prizes. The event is
open to all members and guests.
However, if you are unable to support the Fund by playing, we are asking that you be a Hole
Sponsor by buying a tee sign. The tee signs are available in three categories, Bronze at
$135.00, Silver at $250.00, or Gold at $500.00.
You can participate by sending a check payable to “Franklin C. Snyder/Longue Vue Club Employee Scholarship Fund” to Ken Pizzica at the club or you may choose to put it on your account. Keep in mind that the Fund has been approved by the IRS as a non-taxable foundation.
Thank you.
The F. C. Snyder/Longue Vue Scholarship Committee
A PAIR OF EAGLES BETWEEN BROTHERS
Congratulations to brothers Ben and Max Hoffman. Both young men secured their first
eagle on the golf course this month. Ben Hoffman, 15, used a pitching wedge to get
his ball in the cup on #2 from 120 yards. Max Hoffman, 13, had an eagle on #7. Max
used a sand wedge to hole his shot from 90 yards away.

LVC SWIM TEAM ENDS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON
The 2013 season was another successful one for the Longue Vue Swim Team.
After a slow start, losing our first dual meet, we went on to finish the regular season
with a record of 6-1. During the season, two records were broken. Caroline Colville
broke her own record that she set last year as a 13 year old, lowering the 13-14 Girls
50 Free mark to 32.66. Woody March continued the pattern that he started as an 8
year old, by breaking a record in the next age group, 9-10 Boys. Woody broke a 20
year old record that was previously held by Robert McGrath. It was the first time in
LVST history that a 10 year old boy broke 17 in a 25. Woody’s time was 16.94.
At Regionals, the team did quite well, qualifying in almost every event that we
entered. At Championships, the LVST finished 7th overall. The highest placing relays
were in Events 2 and 21. The team of Ben Hower, Ryan O’Toole, Wyatt Lyda and Baden O’Toole placed 2nd in the 8 and Under Boys 100 Free Relay. The team of Samantha Dockey, Meghan Quaid, Olivia Senan and Abby Wolf also placed 2 nd in the
Girls 12 and Under 200 Free Relay. Individually, our best finishers were Alden March,
Woody March, and Ben Hower. Alden and Woody both placed 3rd overall, with personal best times of 18.22 and 15.12, respectively. Ben Hower placed 2 nd in his 25
Free with a personal best time of 18.06.
Congratulations to the Longue Vue Swim Team for a tremendous season!

IN MEMORIAM

to her daughters and their families.

THE LVC INTERMEDIATE PROGRAM - THE BEST DEAL IN TOWN
It has been said many times before, but bears repeating. Longue Vue ‘s Membership is
second to none! With that in mind, we are always happy when members introduce their
family, friends and colleagues to their club. As more and more younger professionals and
families are looking to embrace life at a club of our caliber, we would like to remind you of
the Intermediate Membership program.
The Intermediate Program offers a wonderful opportunity for qualified young professionals, ages 21 - 39, to become part of the Longue Vue family. Initiation and dues are scaled
based on age, and cash credits are earned each year of intermediate membership that
may be applied to Social or Charter membership, at age 40 or when that decision is
made.
There are three basic levels of Intermediate Membership:
Intermediate II
Ages: 21– 25
Initiation: $750
Monthly Dues*: $198
Initiation: $1,000
Monthly Dues*: $300
Intermediate I
Ages: 26-30
* a portion of monthly dues ($62.50 for Int. II and $83.33 for Int. I) is credited to future initiation upon transfer to Social of Charter membership.
Advanced Intermediate
Ages: 31– 39
Initiation : $3,000 annually
Monthly Dues: vary by age
The Intermediate I and II members accrue a cash credit of $500 for each year they are
members in that category that may be applied toward the Social initiation of $15,000 or
the Charter initiation of $40,000 upon transfer. For each year an individual is an Advanced Intermediate, he or she accrues a cash credit of $1000 toward initiation. The earlier you join, the more cash credits are earned, effectively reducing the overall initiation
fee. Intermediate members have access to all the amenities, including unlimited golf, but
do not have voting privileges. They are responsible for the 36 month assessment for their
respective membership category.
Longue Vue is aware that circumstances are uncertain for those beginning a career, the
Intermediate program allows one to join without being responsible for the full initiation fee
until age 40. In many cases, the initiation may be satisfied prior to age 40, depending on
the age at which a person is elected to membership.
The Membership Committee is confident that the Intermediate Program at Longue Vue is
the best around and a terrific way to attract new young members who embody the values
of Longue Vue and will make their mark on the Club for many years to come. For more
information, please contact Pat Stuchell @ 412-793-2232, ext. 203 or
[email protected].

MEMBERSHIP SUPPORT REAPS DIVIDENDS
There’s an old adage that says, “You get as much out of something as you put into it.” How
true this is in so many facets of our lives. Whether we are actively involved with local charities or serve on community boards etc. we often find that our efforts serving others improve
our own lives and more importantly, we find that the people around us are better too!
Now serving in my seventh year at Longue Vue, I have had an opportunity to experience
first-hand the generosity of the club’s membership. I am pleased to report that there has
never been a shortage of member volunteers to serve on the club’s numerous committees
and Board of Governors. While I am impressed with the number of volunteers, this is not
what impresses me the most. What impresses me the most is that the volunteers are actively engaged in keeping Longue Vue’s historic traditions intact and that they continue to
support and facilitate providing the high quality amenities and services club members have
come to expect.
I remember at the beginning of our country’s financial down turn in 2008, there were a lot of
committee and Board discussions about what the club should be doing to get through this
difficult time. Instead of cutting services and disinvesting in the club to protect the club’s
assets, the committees and Board decided to take the opposite approach. So, reinvestments were continued and new programs were launched to keep the membership engaged
with the club.
I believe these efforts by the Board and committees paid off! The general membership approved of the direction and continued to visit and utilize the club. This membership utilization kept the club’s financial books in balance in a time when it could have easily gone a
different way.
Now that our country’s financial issues appear to have stabilized, the club is positioned to
continue carrying its historic and storied traditions for years to come. The key to ensure the
club’s success in this endeavor is that all members continue to put forth an effort to visit the
club often, utilize and enjoy the golf course, dining areas, pool, shooting grounds and racquets facilities. In addition, recruiting new members is an important way to guarantee that
the lifeblood of the club stays vibrant.
On behalf of Longue Vue Club’s Board of Governors and committees, I want to thank the membership for putting forth an effort to ensure that the club stays active and healthy. I am comfortable saying that the membership’s determination to make
Longue Vue Club the best it can be has made it better for all!
I look forward to seeing everyone soon!
Warmest regards,
Tod Pierce
