Delta AskingFor
CaribbeanRoute
ken schmolze
Delta Steamship IJnes, Inc., owners
and operators of a tleet of American-flag
cargo vessels serving the East Coast of
South America and the West Coast of
Africa to and from ports in the Gulf of
Mexico, has filed application with the
Maritime Administration for authorization to extend Delta’s present trade routes
to include the Caribbean ports presently
included on Trade Route 19.
The route, between Caribbean ports
and U.S. ports on the Gulf of Mexico,
was previously assigned to Lykes
Brothers Steamship Company.
In its application to the Maritime
Administration, Delta requests specifically that the authorization cover all
ports between United States Gulf ports
(Key West, Florida, to the Mexican
border) and foreign ports in the Gulf
of Mexico, Caribbean Sea and the
Guianas (Mexico to southern border of
French Guiana, all islands of the Caribbean including Virgin Islands and West
Indies, except the Canal Zone). This
range would include Venezudan ports
and East Coast Colombian ports.
Delta already has operating authority
to serve Puerto Rico and Barbados.
Delta is prepared to commence
service to
the ports in question immediately upon
approval of this application. Presently
the areas identified in this application
are inadequately served.

Volkswagen
Cuts
Import Damages
Volkswagen of America which has
sent more than four million VWvehicles
out onto U.S. highways is now in the
fifth year of a unique loss prevention
program that has already helped the
company cut shipping and dockside
handling damages by more than onethird.
Transporting Volkswagensto the more
than 1,150 authorized VWdealerships
which sell them in the U.S. involves a
fleet of more than 60 ships chartered to
Wolfsburger Transport. A subsidiary of
Volkswagenwerk AG, that company is
responsible for all overseas transportation of VWvehicles.
Rolf L. Meyer, manager of VWoA
Insurance Services, reports that "shipping damageto Volkswagensis the lowest of all the makes of cars imported to
the U.S." This, he said. is due in substantial part to VW’sloss prevention
program which was started in 1965.
Over the years since then, according
to VWoA,the frequency of shipping
damagehas been reduced by 35 per cent
while the severity of damageto each ear
has also been cut this by 13 per cent.
