Flannery and the Bison program have lived up
to those high expectations. He has created an
atmosphere in which his players have been successful and he is again giving back to the school
that gave him an opportunity in 1976.
After three straight 20-win seasons — a
first in Bucknell annals — his career record now
stands at 317-202 (.611) overall and 222-159
(.583) at Bucknell.
Flannery began his coaching career at
Bucknell in 1994-95 by guiding the Bison to
an 11-3 final league mark and earning Patriot
League Coach of the Year honors. He was the
first Patriot League coach to earn such honors in
his opening season with a program. The award
was especially sweet for Flannery, considering
the Bison had opened the year 0-8, before winning 13 of their final 19 games to collect a share
of the regular season title.
In 1995-96, Bucknell was again solid in
league play, going 8-4 in Patriot games, and
finishing the season with an overall record of
17-11. Included in those 17 wins was one of
the school’s biggest victories of all time, when
the Bison knocked off Alabama, 72-64, at the
Cessna Holiday Classic at Wichita State.
Flannery earned Patriot League Coach of
the Year honors for the second time in 1996-97,
after directing his squad to an 18-11 overall
record, a 9-3 league mark and a berth in the
league championship game. Non-league victories at Princeton and Air Force, plus a pair of
wins over defending PL champ Colgate were
but a few of the highlights from that magnificent campaign. Bucknell was one of just four
schools (joining California, Indiana and North
Carolina) to knock off Princeton in 1996-97.
In 1997-98, Bucknell slipped to 13-15 overall, due in large part to a grueling non-league
schedule that included games against Iowa,
Penn State, Princeton and Pittsburgh. Within
the league, the Bison were again solid at 8-4.
His 1998-99 team started slowly, but turned
it on down the stretch, winning 13 of its last 16
games before falling to Lafayette in the Patriot
League championship game, 67-63. The Bison
were 9-3 in the PL during the regular season.

course of the season and finished with a 9-5
league record. Bucknell eliminated three-time
defending PL champion Holy Cross in the opening round of the conference tournament before
falling in the semifinals.
In the 2005-06 Patriot League Tournament,
after knocking out Lafayette and American
in the first two rounds at Sojka Pavilion, the
Bison won 61-57 at Holy Cross for their first
league title of any kind since 1989. They
repeated the feat a year later, sweeping

sellout crowds at Sojka Pavilion.

Flannery has tutored many standout
individuals. He has coached a First Team
All-Patriot League player in 11 of his first
12 years at Bucknell, and he helped stars
J.R. Holden, Bryan Bailey, Boakai Lalugba,
Charles Lee, Chris McNaughton and Donald Brown land professional playing opportunities overseas. Lee, a 2006 graduate,
signed with the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs
and played with the team throughout
training camp in 2006. This summer, Holden helped the Russian national team win
the EuroBasket championship and qualify
for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Under Flannery, the Bison have played a
very active role in the community. The team
has volunteered its time to Central Pennsylvania
youth basketball organizations, the Donald
Heiter Community Center in Lewisburg and
the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger
Medical Center.
In January 2003, Flannery for the second
time took his team to his hometown of Pottsville to play at historic Martz Hall. The Bison
played Penn there in 1997, and in 2003 hosted
Niagara on the floor where Flannery played
his prep ball. Dubbed the Kids Classic, the
game raised funds for youth basketball in the
Pottsville area.
Flannery has also taken three Bucknell
teams on summer overseas tours. In 1996 Bucknell went to Denmark and Sweden, in 2000 the
team visited Italy and Croatia, and in 2005 the
squad toured Ireland and England.

Now in his fifth season at Bucknell
and his 10th as a member of the Patriot
League coaching ranks, Nathan Davis returns to Pat Flannery’s staff in 2007-08.
Davis serves as Flannery’s chief aide
in all aspects of the program, from scouting to player development to recruiting.
Davis came to Lewisburg prior to the
2003-04 season armed with a deep working knowledge of the Patriot
League, having served as an assistant coach at Navy for the previous five
years. While in Annapolis he served as head coach Don DeVoe’s chief
western recruiter, landing numerous top prospects from that region.
Davis helped guide the Midshipmen to Patriot League championship
game appearances in 2000 and 2001, and he served as director of the
Navy Basketball Camps.
A native of Bethesda, Md., Davis graduated in 1997 from RandolphMacon College with majors in history and sociology. He earned four
varsity letters in basketball
and served as team co-captain
in both his junior and senior
years. A two-time all-conference selection, Davis scored
983 career points and was one
of only five players in school
history to have more than 500
career rebounds, 300 career
assists and 100 career steals.
He helped the Yellow Jackets
to the 1996 NCAA Division III
Tournament.
After serving as a student
assistant coach while completing his degree at RandolphMacon in 1996-97, Davis spent
one year as an assistant coach
at Emory and Henry College
before moving on to the U.S.
Naval Academy.
Davis and his wife, Miki,
reside in Lewisburg with their
1-year-old son, Kieran.
Mark Prosser returns to the Bucknell
bench for his fifth season as an assistant
coach under Pat Flannery.
A 2002 graduate of Marist College,
Prosser came to Bucknell prior to the
2003-04 season from Wofford College,
where he spent a year working as an
assistant under head coach Mike Young.
Prosser was involved in all aspects of coaching, including scouting, prep
recruiting and film breakdown.
After earning Street & Smith’s honorable mention All-America honors
in his final year at Lawrenceville
Prep, Prosser earned a basketball scholarship at Marist. A
knee injury cut short his playing career, but he remained
with the program in a student
assistant coach capacity under
Dave Magarity.
The son of the late coach
Skip Prosser, the Wheeling,
W.Va., native has worked numerous basketball camps,
including the Five Star Camp
in Pittsburgh and camps at
Xavier, Wake Forest, North
Carolina and Wofford.

Dan Bowen, a 2000 Bucknell graduate and a former standout center on the
Bison men’s basketball team, returned to
his alma mater as an assistant coach prior
to the 2006-07 season.
The 1997 Patriot League Rookie
of the Year and a First Team All-Patriot
League pick in 1999 and 2000, Bowen
previously served on men’s basketball staffs at the University of Scranton,
Marist College and Randolph-Macon College.
A 6’9” center, Bowen was one of the best and most durable big men
ever to play at Bucknell. He is one of only nine players in school history
to record over 1,000 points (1,193) and 700 rebounds (711). He played
in 113 career games in four years, starting all but one, and on Bucknell’s
all-time charts he currently ranks 15th in scoring, 10th in rebounding,
fifth in field-goal percentage
(.544) and second in blocked
shots (160).
As a senior, Bowen led the
Bison in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounding (7.6 rpg), field-goal
percentage (.515) and blocked
shots (1.59 bpg). That year he
was named to the all-conference first team for the second
straight year, and he earned
the Orange & Blue Award in
recognition of “exceptional
athletic achievement and contribution to Bucknell athletics.”
A team co-captain in 19992000, Bowen was a two-time
recipient of the Benton Kribbs
Award as team MVP.
A native of Manchester,
N.H., Bowen broke into the collegiate coaching ranks in 2001 at Scranton under head coach Carl Danzig,
a former Bucknell assistant coach. In 2002-03 he helped lead the Royals
to a 24-6 record and berth in the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen.
Following that season Bowen was hired as an assistant coach at
Marist in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, where he spent one
season before returning to Scranton in 2004-05. Last year Bowen moved
on to Randolph-Macon, where he helped the Yellow Jackets to a 22-7
record and an NCAA Tournament berth. At RMC, Bowen worked under
head coach Mike Rhoades, who starred on Pat Flannery’s Division III
national championship team at Lebanon Valley in 1994.

2006-07 in the newly created position of
manager of basketball operations.
Christian, who had previous coaching experience as an assistant at Emory
& Henry College, handles a wide variety
of duties at Bucknell. Among them are coordinating team travel plans,
handling the team’s video needs, directing the Bison summer camps
and assisting in the arrangement of alumni functions, such as the
team’s popular summer golf

of the Year honors in his senior season after leading New Kent High School
to a 26-0 record and a state title.

Bucknell Sports Medicine
Bucknell’s athletic training staff, headed by Mark Keppler, provides outstanding medical care for each of Bucknell’s student-athletes. Keppler and his staff
recently moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art athletic training room as part
of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center design. There is also a
fully-equipped athletic training facility in Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium,
adjacent to the football team locker room, and satellite training rooms at Sojka
Pavilion and West Fields. The philosophy of the Bucknell sports medicine team
is a commitment to providing the best care for Bison student-athletes. Its injury
and rehab protocols are developed to help decrease athletics-related injuries,
increase injury recovery time, and combine strength and flexibility, endurance
and sport-specific functional activities.
Every injured Bucknell student-athlete is attended by an athletic trainer
at the time the injury occurs. Each of Bucknell’s professional staff trainers are
state and nationally certified, and they are assisted on-site by a quality team
of student athletic trainers. The care for all Bucknell students ultimately falls
under the direction of Dr. Donald Stechschulte, the director of the University’s
student health service. Athletes sustaining serious injuries requiring immediate
attention in a hospital setting are sent to the emergency room of the Evangelical
Community Hospital, located just two miles from the Bucknell campus.

Assistant Athletic Director Mark Keppler, now in his 22nd
year as Bucknell’s head athletic trainer, oversees Bucknell’s athletic training and sports medicine program. Keppler coordinates
the work of six professional staff members, a graduate assistant,
an intern and a dedicated group of student assistants.
The head trainer at Carnegie Mellon University for 11 years
before coming to Bucknell, Keppler is a member of the National
Athletic Trainers Association and is both state- and nationallycertified.
From 1982-84 he served as president of the Pennsylvania
Athletic Training Society, and from 1984-97 he served with the
Athletic Training Advisory Commission to the State Board of
Physical Therapy. He is currently the Convention Chair for PATS
and was inducted into that organization’s Hall of Fame in June
2006.
Keppler is a 1973 graduate of Florida State University and
holds a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
After working with the football program for his first three
years at Bucknell, Keppler moved to the fieldhouse training room
to coordinate the athletic training office for the entire athletic
department. In the fall of 1999, he once again took over as the primary football trainer, in addition to running the athletic training
office. Keppler also serves as the primary athletic trainer for spring
football, and supervises off-season rehabilitation programs for
any injured Bison football players.
Keppler and his wife, Wanda, reside in Lewisburg and are
the parents of daughters Sarah and Reta.

athletic training needs for the Bison football and track and field teams. Tiffany

Penn State University, is in his fourth year at Bucknell and works with the Bison volleyball and men’s
lacrosse programs. Lock Haven University graduate Jason Taylor joined Keppler’s staff in 2005-06
and is assigned to the men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s water polo and wrestling
teams. Cassie McFadden, a 2005 King’s College graduate, is back for her second year as an assistant athletic trainer. She works with the women’s soccer
and women’s lacrosse teams. Rachel Green and Andrea Harmon are the newest members of the staff, having arrived at Bucknell this summer. Green is a
2003 graduate of Evansville University and had been an associate athletic trainer at Mercer University for the past two years. Harmon graduated from nearby
Lock Haven in 2005, and she spent the last two years earning her
master’s degree a the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

In August 2005, Bucknell director of athletics and recreation

Medicine the exclusive sports medicine provider for Bucknell
University Athletics. Geisinger’s team of orthopaedic specialists, certified in a wide array of specialties, is responsible for the
care and treatment of more than 700 Division I student-athletes
participating in varsity athletics at Bucknell.
Geisinger Health System is an integrated, physician-led
healthcare services organization that serves more than two million residents throughout central and northeastern Pennsylvania.
It includes a 650-member multi-specialty physician practice, a
tertiary/quaternary medical center and an acute-care community hospital, adult and pediatric trauma centers, a nationally
acclaimed alcohol and chemical dependency treatment center,
heart and cancer institutes, a neurosciences program, two
research centers, 41 community practice offices and one of the
largest not-for-profit rural HMOs in the country.

Strength & Conditioning/Coaching Records
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
The strength and conditioning program at
Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the
completion of the Krebs Family Fitness Center
and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the
hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first fulltime strength and conditioning coordinator.
A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg University with a degree in movement studies and
exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditionJERRY SHRECK
ing routines for each of Bucknell’s programs.
The general philosophy of the Bison
strength program is year-round periodization with a high-intensity
base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training
programs for most teams will employ explosion techniques with power
bands and pliometrics.
The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the
prevention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition
(as opposed to training bodybuilders).
A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck previously served as the
athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons.
He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and
the National Council of Strength and Fitness.
Shreck is assisted by former Bucknell head football coach Bob Curtis
and three additional full-time staff members — Mike Kamal, Janine Abdallah and Eric Wood
Bucknell varsity student-athletes receive regular training from Shreck
and/or a member of his staff in a private area of the Berger Family Weight
Room.

JAY WRIGHT HAS WILDCATS THRIVING
BISON WELL-REPRESENTED OVERSEAS
Under the direction of 1983 Bucknell graduate Jay Wright, the Villanova
men’s basketball team has returned to glory as one of the nation’s elite teams.
In 2005-06, Wright’s Wildcats won a school-record 28 games, captured the Big
East regular-season title, earned the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament No.
1 seed, and advanced to the Elite Eight.
Wright was a three-year letterman in basketball at Bucknell, where he
received the Kribbs Award as team MVP in
1981-82 and the Musser Award for leadership
in 1982-83. Wright was a freshman at Bucknell
when current Bison coach Pat Flannery was
a senior, and the two were publicly reunited
in December 2005 when Wright brought his
fourth-ranked Wildcats to Sojka Pavilion to play
in front of the largest crowd in school history.
Villanova prevailed, 79-60.
Before arriving at Villanova in 2001, Wright
was head coach at Hofstra for seven seasons,
where he led the Pride to a pair of America
East titles. He has also been an assistant coach
at Villanova and UNLV.
In August 2005 he served as head coach of
the gold medal-winning U.S. team at the World
University Games in Turkey. Wright was named
USA Basketball Co-Developmental Coach of the
Year after leading the U.S. to an 8-0 record.
While J.R. Holden ‘98 and Charles Lee ‘06 have made the biggest splashes
among Bucknell graduates in the professional ranks (see p. 36 for more on
Holden’s amazing story), the Bison have sent numerous players overseas to
continue their basketball careers.
Among them are pair of 2007 graduates who inked pro contracts over
the summer. Chris McNaughton and Donald Brown signed with clubs in Spain
and Iceland, respectively. Interestingly, one of McNaughton’s first games for
his new team — C.B. L’Hospitalet in Barcelona — came against a familiar foe
in Holy Cross, which was winding up a summer
overseas tour in Spain. McNaughton had 10
points in a victory over the Crusaders.
Another 2007 graduate, point guard Abe
Badmus, returned to the Nigerian National Team
for the FIBA Africa Cup this summer. Badmus
started the team’s first two games — a 109-35
rout of Liberia and a 77-54 win over Central
African Republic — but suffered an injury and
did not compete the rest of the tournament.
Former Bison all-stars Boakai Lalugba ‘03
and Bryan Bailey ‘02 are also still active in the
European professional ranks. Lalugba will play
for Bourg in France this season after previous
stops in Sweden and Finland. Bailey played last

BISON GIVE BACK TO THE LEWISBURG COMMUNITY
Head coach Pat Flannery believes very strongly in lending a helping hand to those less fortunate, and he and his staff have kept the Bison
basketball team extremely active in the community over the past decade-plus. Whether it’s visiting sick children at a local hospital, raising money
for the September 11 disaster relief fund, or running clinics for local youths, the Bucknell basketball program is proud to return the favor for the
fantastic support the Lewisburg community has shown the Bison through the years.
The team has made it a tradition to pay a Halloween visit to the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pa.,
each fall. The coaching staff and a host of Bison players make the trip to the hospital to lift the spirits of the children they spend time with. For the
players, the experience is both eye-opening and gratifying.
In addition to the hospital, the Bucknell basketball team spends time with the children at the local elementary and middle schools, and at the
Heiter Community Center in Lewisburg. Coach Flannery also invites youth basketball teams from all over the region to come to Sojka Pavilion and
“strut their stuff ” for the crowd during halftimes of the Bucknell games. Bison players and
coaches have also served Thanksgiving meals at the Heiter Center in recent years.
In the wake of the horrific attacks on New York City, Washington, D.C., and Western
Pennsylvania, the team sold T-shirts that featured the Bucknell Basketball insiginia and
the American flag.
In 2008 the Bison will host the Fourth Annual Dirk Sojka Slam Dunk with Bison
Basketball, with proceeds benefitting Suncom Industries, where persons with disabilities
learn to reach their full potential. Suncom was the workplace of Dirk Sojka, son of Gary
and Sandy Sojka, until Dirk’s passing in July 2002.
Flannery and his staff also place great emphasis on alumni relations, keeping
