Chapter Changes for 2008
We are going to try a couple of new things starting
January 1, 2008 in Chapter A. As Chapter Director
Garry will be handing out Chapter Fun Money. You
may be asking yourself how do I get Chapter Fun
Money. Well, the answer to that is to participate.
You will earn a Chapter dollar for each ride you
attend, for each meeting you attend and for each
Chapter function you participate in. Now you may
want to know how you can spend this Fun Money.
You can spend your Fun Money to buy door prize
tickets and for registration at the Chili Cook-off. The
only limitation is that you can not use more than 50%
of whatever you are purchasing at a time or function
and you can not use them for 50/50 tickets.
Now you may have guessed that one of the other new
things we are doing this year is separate door prize
tickets and 50/50 tickets at our meetings. We are
encouraging members to bring in door prizes to our
meetings and you will receive an extra door prize
ticket at the meeting if you bring in a door prize.
We are also giving out one extra door prize ticket to
every member either wearing a name tag or their shirt
with their name on the shirt. We are encouraging all
members to identify themselves at Chapter functions
to make it easier for any guest or new members.
The newsletter will contain a section called “Sunshine
and Sorrow” so if you have news good or bad that you
would like to share in the newsletter please get that
information to Jon Hofer.
Look for many other fun changes in the upcoming
year. If you have any ideas on things you would like
to try or see changed please let any staff member
know. We are always looking for fun and exciting
changes.

EXERCISE FOLLOW UP
While doing your normal exercise routine, you can
add the following;
The exercise is called a Superman. It involves laying
on your stomach and lifting your arms straight in front
of you and raising your legs about 6" off the ground.
Hold for 5 seconds then drop your feet and hands to
the ground. Do this for 5 sets. This will only take a
few minutes a day but will strengthen the back
muscles without heavy lifting or going to a gym.
You'll look like Superman flying across the sky while
you're doing this exercise, hence the name.
This was submitted by Jeff Kapp from his personal
trainer , Terri.
So keep in shape over the holiday season and be in
shape to ride next year.
Veterans Day Parade
Chapter A was invited to participate in the Veteran’s
Day Parade in November. We had 29 people on 21
bikes/trikes at the parade. We had some Chapter A,
Chapter K, Chapter G and some individuals in
attendance. The slow speeds made things a little
complicated for the bikes but we all had a great time.
VFW 10188 then invited us to their hall for a
barbeque to complete the day. Not all members were
able to attend the barbeque but for those who did they
had a wonderful time with lots of great food. We
really appreciate all of those who were able to attend.
We made a great showing for the parade and to honor
those who have served and those who are serving in
our military.

Mt.Lemmon--SummerHaven--Bakery.
A beautiful day for riding. Not much traffic, good curves. This is
the first time Robin has ridden her bike up here, she did a great
job. We all enjoyed the food, some had huge pies and ice-cream,
while others ate lunch. Harold left before the rest of us, he
stopped at view areas.

Battery Maintenance
If you have a lead acid battery , you should follow the
procedures stated here to get the most life out of your battery.
If you have a maintenance free battery there is no electrolyte
level to check but you should keep the cables and connectors
clean.
Perform Monthly Maintenance
A battery only requires a little monthly maintenance to
perform perfectly. Keep the battery charged to 100%,
recharging when the lights dim, the starter sounds weak, or
the battery hasn't been used in more than two weeks. Other
than that, follow this simple check list every month:
Check the electrolyte level
Keep the top free of grime
Check cables, clamps, and case for obvious damage
or loose connections
Clean terminals and connectors as necessary
Check inside for excessive sediment, sulfation or
mossing
Make sure the exhaust tube is free of kinks and clogs
Replace caps firmly
Finish up by testing the battery with either a hydrometer or
voltmeter. To extend the service life of your battery, make
monthly battery maintenance part of your routine.
Storing Your Battery
If the vehicle is in storage or used infrequently, disconnect
the battery cable to eliminate drain from electrical
equipment. Charge the battery every two weeks.
For extended storage, remove the battery from the vehicle and
charge to 100%. Charge the battery every month if stored at
temperatures below 60° F. If stored in a warm area (above
60° F), charge every two weeks. Make sure batteries are
stored out of reach of children.
If you are not going to take the battery out of your bike or you
do not ride it very infrequently, a trickle charger is
recommended to keep the battery at full charge.
A good trickle charger is meant to maintain the charge in your
battery. It is not meant and will not fully charge a run down
battery. Trickle chargers are meant to maintain the battery
charge when the bikes charging system is not in operation,
There are several good trickle chargers that you can purchase.
They will only supply 2.5 amps of power to maintain the
battery and will not over charge the battery, in other words it
will supply a charge on demand only when the battery charge
falls below a certain level.
If your battery is discharged to low, you will need a higher
capacity battery charger to recharge you battery to the proper
level.
Remember that even if your bike is turned off, there is still an
electrical drain
Nov 14th Social at Hofer’s House
We had a coffee party with 20 people in
attendance! What fun just to get together with
Gold Wing friends!! With an overwhelming
selection of delectable deserts to choose from it
was hard not to try just one more bite. We had
pies, cakes, cookies, bars, and puddings along with
conversations indoors and out. What a wonderful
way to start out the pre-holiday season. It was held
at Jon and Sharon Hofer’s home with Randy, Pam
& Amy Crockett, Cliff & Diana Sias, Geb &
Christy Bailey, Gene & Jeannie McGaughey,
Steve & Laurie Williams, Dave & Dee Gormley,
Dan & Donna Humphrey, Ron Penner, and Garry
& Kerry Woo bringing goodies and another good
time held by all! Thanks for coming! We will have
to do it again soon.
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS FOR
CHAPTER AZ - A
I have been thinking of New Years
Resolutions for our chapter. I have
come up with more fun, fun and fun.
More fun at meetings, more fun on
rides and more fun activities. The
new chapter staff will be coming up
with new ideas for all occasions and
that has already started. We have a
new group of gals Sharon Hofer,
Jeannie McGaughey, Sandie Novitt
and Dee Gormley called the ‘Good
Time Gals’. Their job is to bring
games and humor to the meetings and
events. The idea of more fun on rides
and activities will be the job of the
new ride coordinators Steve and
Laurie Williams. They have already
begun coming up with new ideas for
rides and activities, poker run dinners,
hockey game bike nights, hay rack
rides through Winterhaven, etc. All of
this is being accomplished at the ride
meetings and staff meetings.
My next resolution is Safety. I have
asked the new Ride Educators, Dave
Gormley and Chuck Lee to have more
classes on riding and safety on and off
the bikes. This includes First Aid,
CPR and Motorcycle Maintenance.
On that request there is a Road
Captains, CPR and First Aid course
already set up for the New Year.
My last resolution is knowledge. All
brought to us by our District Trainer
and Web mistress Sami Hall and her
staff Sandie Novitt and Dianne
Lumpkin with classes on history of
GWRRA, how the chapter runs and
the staff workings. Sami has already
set Knowledge Enhancement Training
for January 26, 2008 at Jim Click on
22nd Street.
Look for current information on all
three points in our wonderful
Newsletter brought to us by Jon
Hofer, Newsletter Editor.

Jury Duty Scam !
This has been verified by the FBI (their
link is also included below). Please pass
this on to everyone in your email address
book. It is spreading fast so be prepared
should you get this call. Most of us take
those summonses for jury duty seriously,
but enough people skip out on their civic
duty, that a new and ominous kind of
fraud has surfaced.
The caller claims to be a jury coordinator.
If you protest that you never received a
summons for jury duty, the scammer asks
you for your Social Security number and
date of birth so he or she can verify the
information and cancel the arrest warrant.
Give out any of this information and bigo;
your identity was just stolen.
The fraud has been reported so far in 11
states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and
Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly
insidious because they use intimidation
over the phone to try to bully people into
giving information by pretending they are
with the court system. The FBI and the
federal court system have issued
nationwide alerts on their web sites,
warning consumers about the fraud.

New Year's Resolutions
By Sami Hall, AZ District Trainer
Wow - it is that time again! It is time for those
dreaded New Year's resolutions. This year make it
some thing easy - do something for yourself attend a Leadership Training Class.
A lot of us have joined GWRRA from other
organizations. Somtimes we get more out of an
association if we understand how it works and
what it can do for "me". The LTD offers not only
classes about GWRRA but we also offer classes
about STRESS *(and who does not have that
around the holidays?), and basic WORD and
EXCEL classes.
Chapter A is offering a Knowledge Enhancement
day on January 26th - this will be a great
opportunity to learn how GWRRA works and is
structured. For more information, contact Garry
Woo at [email protected].
Come and be good to yourself - and see you on the
26th!
2007 Chapter “A” Highlights
Where did the year go? Here we are with another year almost finished. We had many memorable events
throughout the year. We had our Chili cook off at Kennedy Park where we also had a good showing from
Chapter “R”. The “hottest” chili award went to Brad Geller. We had well attended rides every month, visiting
Lordsburg NM, Showlow, Tubac, Douglas, Sierra Vista, Bisbee, Parker Canyon, Mount Lemmon, Kitt Peak,
Sells and Silver City NM, including the Gila cliff dwellings to name a few.
We had several riders go to Wingding up in Billings Montana. Bill and Nancy Cordray made the trip
worthwhile when they won a trike kit from a vendor. Chuck Lee entered his Bike in a contest and was awarded
best custom 1500 class.
This fall several members rode up To Phoenix for our annual “Ride For Kids” event. The Chapter raised $7200
for the charity and the day was capped off with a 60-mile ride around SE Phoenix and Salt River area. There
were a dozen or so Highway Patrol officers on BMW Police bikes who closed off a portion of the highway 202
to give the 425 or so riders unencumbered access to the freeway. Another highlight of the day had to be when
Sami Hall’s name was called as the winner of the new Honda 250 motorcycle.
Our progressive dinner ride this year started in Tucson and proceeded to the rest area on I-19. The 3rd leg was
off to Sierra Vista where the group went to Mustang Corners near Sierra Vista for the 3rd course.
This fall about 19 members rode to Silver City NM for the GWRRA NM district Rally. Most of us rode to the
Gila Cliff Dwellings on one of their planned rides. The weather was great and the city invited us back for next
year.
Tucson hosted the AZ district rally at Beaudry’s RV and by all accounts, it was big success! Tucson Mayor
Walkup welcomed the rally to Tucson and mentioned he owns a Honda motorcycle and as he closed his speech,
he challenged GWRRA to bring Wingding to Tucson in four years and he’d give us the use of the downtown
community center. He promised that all of Tucson’s roadwork would be completed then. The Chapter hosted a
cookout on opening night and Garry, Steve, Bill, Ron, Dave and Geb tried to stay within reaching distance of
the grill as there was so much smoke raised while cooking hotdogs and hamburgers that one could hardly see.
Dee, Christy, Kerry, Sami, Laurie and other ladies I’ve forgotten helped man the condiment tables and make
sure the line kept moving. The second evening we hosted an Ice Cream social and the “Big Dippers” dipped up
around 10 gallons of ice cream to hungry attendees. We had around 22 vendors participate at the rally and the
overwhelming response from them was that our rally outdid NM and CA rallies combined and that several of
them would be back next year. Diane and Lumpy did an outstanding job hosting the rally and Lumpy dressed
for the occasion! (You’re reputation is intact with me, Lumpy!) The Arizona Drill Team performed on Saturday
and demonstrated some nimble riding skills and precision formations. We also had a California rider who
performed some amazing trick riding on a 1500. The show was a lot of hard work and a lot of people worked
very hard to make it a success!
2008 looks to be another exciting year with our new Chapter Director, Garry Woo at the helm. The scheduled
rides are a great way to enjoy the commradery of friends who share an interest in exploring the great outdoors
on a “wing”. I’ve enjoyed several rides and friendships created on several treks I’ve been on in my short time
with the chapter.
Our goal has been to have several varied rides available at different times of the week to have something that
will be of interest to everyone. We are interested in hearing all suggestions for that special ride.
See you all next year!
