Teens
TEENS WHO WANT TO LEAD...TEENS TAKING THE
LEAD...TEENS IN THE LEAD….TEEN LEADERS
Teen LEED Initiative: Leadership, Enrichment,
Employment, and Development
At the Y, Youth and Teens are encouraged to reach their full
potential by mastering life skills needed to become positive
adult citizens. By offering programs and activities that foster
personal growth and awareness, we focus on developing youth
and teens in a way that is specific to their individual need and
interest. Teen LEED is a progressive culture of leadership and
independence that guides teens through their journey in
becoming better leaders.
Level 1: Teens Who Want to LEAD
Y-Clubs: At the Y we keep youth and teens connected through
small interest groups. Teens are offered a wide variety of
Y-Clubs that include: chess club, technology club, theater and
arts club, hip-hop dance classes, yogo, flag football, and
more. All Y-Clubs meet weekly and provide a safe and
nurturing environment so that teens can explore and grow in
areas of interest in a casual way.
Friday Night Breakouts: Every month teens have the chance
to simply “hang out” in a positive, safe, and fun environment.
Friday Night Breakouts include trips to various places in
Atlanta and the Metro Atlanta area. Past trips include:
bowling, ice skating, dinner and a movie downtown, sport
games, museums, paint balling, skating, and arcade venues
and more!
Level 2: Teens Taking the LEAD
YMCA Earth Service Corps: YMCA Earth Service Corps (YESC)
is a YMCA program, active nationwide, that teaches young
people caring, responsibility, honesty, and responsibility
through community action and a better understanding of
where they live. The program is a teen and community
partnership that supports the development of youth-led clubs
and provides environmental educational opportunities through
which teens can focus on the issues that make their
neighborhoods more viable and sustainable. The four main
components are leadership training, monthly service-learning
projects, environmental education, and cross cultural
experiences and exposure to a multitude of ways to take
effective action.
East Lake Family YMCA • 404-373-6561 • www.ymcaatlanta.org
Summer L.I.T: LIT stands for Leader-InTraining. We’ve found the best leaders and
staff are often those who have been through
the camp experience as a camper. LITs are
transitioning from a camper to a camp leader.
LITs have the opportunity to continue
attending camp, albeit in a new role. LITs
build leadership skills, continue in the camp
tradition of forming lasting relationships, and
contribute to the overall camp atmosphere.
The LIT program is for campers who wish to
transition to the role of Counselor in the
future or those who simply wish to build
skills for future employment.
Level 3: Teens in the LEAD
Teen Advisory Board: Teen Advisory Board is
a core group of Y-leaders who work together
to find ways to engage other teens. Teen
Board is a forum for teens to meet other
teens who enjoy service and to have a voice
planning the activities for teens at the YMCA
Youth and Teen Development Center. To help
promote our services to other teens, TAB will
meet as a group at once a month. During the
meeting TAB will discuss and plan upcoming
activities, talk about ways the Youth and
Teen Center can help teens in the
community. Alongside serving as ambassador
at the Y, they complete ongoing leadership
and personal development trainings to
include: public speaking, financial literacy,
teen entrepreneurs, and more.
REGISTER ONLINE!
Y Leaders Club: In Y Leaders Club, teens receive leadership
training and learn the importance of social responsibility and
service to others. Leaders Club meets once a week. Members
also participate in social events, service projects and have the
opportunity to go on several trips. Leaders Club provides a
safe, genuine place for middle and high school teens and helps
direct their energy to positive outcomes.
Young Women's Leadership Academy: Young Women's
Leadership Academy provides opportunities for young women
to gain positive life skills and realize their leadership potential
by being exposed to professional women and men that can
inspire and encourage them to pursue and achieve their
dreams. In scheduled monthly two-three hour sessions, teens
are mentored and engaged in regular project-based activities
and receive hands-on experience while exploring various
career choices and participate in activities that solidify their
leadership, communication, self-esteem and social skills.
Young Men’s Achievers Academy: Y Achievers is a national Y
program designed to help teens set and pursue high
educational and career goals resulting in graduation and
acceptance into a post-secondary institute or adoption of a
vocation. Y Achievers helps teens improve academic
performance, develop a positive sense of self, build character,
explore diverse college and career options, and interact with
professionals who serve as role models. Y Achievers is yea round, enrolling new freshmen each fall. During the school
year, students participate in weekly non-school hour sessions
and monthly Saturday Summit and Workshops. Students also
take part in job shadowing opportunities and college tours.
During the summer, eligible rising juniors and seniors are
provided the opportunity to work in paid summer internships.
Level 4: YMCA Teen LEADer
International Excursions: The Y Teen International Excursion
program offers teens a progressive way to learn new and
diverse cultures through service and international awareness.
This program allows our teens to participate in new
environments where everyone can establish new goals and
memories while having fun and making new connections
globally. Core components of International Excursion are team
building, leadership development, and philanthropic
matriculation.
Teen Internships at the Y: The Youth & Teen Center provides
teens with life-changing work experiences at companies and
nonprofit organizations. The internship program gives
students the opportunity to explore exciting career paths,
make new connections, and build a network of professional
adults that they would not have the ability to make on their own.
After weeks of training led by industry
professionals and staff at the Youth and Teen
Center, the students spend time in their
placements gaining an understanding of the
profession and what it means to have the
responsibility of a full time job/career.
YMCA Educational Support Programs
College TRACK: Here at the Y, we know and
understand that education is the glue of
strong, healthy families and neighborhoods.
That's why we're working to help close the
education achievement gap and transform
communities. Students meet once and week
and are introduced to financial and social
aspects of the college entry process. This
program incorporates guest speakers, campus
visits, tutoring and centered on a frame work
that helps remove the "veil of mystery"
regarding higher education.
Academic Tutorial Programming: The highly
personalized and targeted approach of our
academic tutoring programs builds the skills,
study habits, and determination necessary to
excel in the classroom and beyond. We offer
daily tutorials for all students that build the
core skills and confidence you need for a
successful academic journey.
Saturday Learning Academy: Academic
instruction with certified teachers in a
nurturing and supportive environment.
