Divine Mercy Sunday
Divine Mercy Sunday – Happy Easter!
Yes, Happy Easter! Although you may think that Easter was last Sunday, as a matter of fact, the Church celebrates Easter for
eight days (today being the eighth day and ending what is called the Easter octave). In the eyes of the Church, the Easter event of
Jesus’ resurrection is so important that we celebrate it for eight days. Each day this past week we have used prayers from Easter
Sunday and have ended each Mass with a double alleluia. Even the first half of today’s Gospel takes place on the Easter evening.
The words of Jesus to his disciples from today’s Gospel are my words of prayer for each of you: “Peace be with you. Receive
the Holy Spirit.”
The Easter season lasts for fifty days, until the celebration of Pentecost on May 15. During these weeks we will hear about the
life of the early Church and the work of the Spirit. It is my prayer that the Holy Spirit will powerfully descend upon this community. I pray that we receive the power of the Spirit, bear witness to the resurrection of Jesus and find His peace.
I congratulate the adults who were baptized and confirmed at last week’s Easter Vigil. I also want to thank everyone who
helped make the services of Holy Week and Easter so beautiful. I am also grateful to those who donated flowers to enhance our
Church environment. I am proud to be part of this Catholic community and hope you share the same pride in our Church.
On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 7, 2013, in a homily at the Basilica of St. John Lateran, Pope Francis said: “This is important:
the courage to trust in Jesus’ mercy, to trust in his patience, to seek refuge always in the wounds of his love.” As Thomas recognized
Jesus by his wounds, may all of us find refuge in the wounds of his love. Happy Easter! Fr. Tom
Divine Mercy Sunday - On April 30, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Polish Sr. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) and designated the Sunday after Easter as “Divine Mercy Sunday.” The Pope stated he felt a closeness to St. Faustina when he was writing
his encyclical, “Dives in misericordia.” Pope John Paul II died during the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday 2005. During this Year of Mercy
do not simply receive God’s divine mercy but extend it to others.
Adult Education – Fr. Tom’s Adult Education series on the Year of Mercy will continue this Tuesday, April 5 at 7:30pm in the
Kesterson Center. This month we will look at God’s divine mercy. All adults are invited attend.
Pray for Vocations – Please remember to pray for more vocations to religious life and the priesthood during this holy season. This can be our special gift to the Church.

What is Divine Mercy?
The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us – all of us.
And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that
we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through
us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.
The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering
ABC:
A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly,
repenting of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and
upon the whole world.
B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mercy and let it flow through us
to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He
does to us.
C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His
mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we
will receive.

Be free to hear and respond
Obstacles and fears prevent you from
hearing God’s voice. To clear these
obstacles you must face them and
ask for help in clearing them away.
You must be willing to let God set
you free. You must also be willing to
allow others to help you in this. As
the obstacles are cleared away, you
can truly pray, “Your will, not my
own.”

A Jubilee Prayer
for Mercy
Loving God- As you cast open the
doors of your heart to us may we respond with urgency to proclaim your
mercy to others. May we always be
credible witnesses to mercy, professing it and living it as the core of the
revelation of Jesus Christ. May we
never tire of extending mercy and be
ever patient in offering compassion
and comfort. May we repeat confidently without end; “Be mindful of
your mercy, O Lord, and your steadfast love, for they have been from of
old” (Ps 25:6). Amen.
Friends...
Often families are not prepared for the birth of a child with a disability or the development of impairments. Our pastoral response is to become informed about disabilities
and to offer ongoing support to the family and welcome to the child.

The Easter Vigil— A Flood of Grace
We give thanks to God for the 7 people who received baptism, confirmation and first Eucharist during the Easter
Vigil. On April, 16th (confirmandi) and on April 23rd (candidates) the other RCIA attendees with receive their sacraments.
May we continue to keep them in our constant prayer for strength to continue their walk with the Lord in faith and joy.
