Habitat Establishes “Legacy Builders”
Last August, Habitat lost a wonderful volunteer with the passing of
Mildred Naugle, an active member of “the toy group” – a team of devoted men
and women who make, and paint, old-fashioned wooden toys for Habitat to sell
as a way to raise funds. Mildred was a familiar face around our office every
Tuesday, never neglecting to look up from her painting to give a cheery greeting to everyone who happened by.
After Mildred’s passing, we learned that her legacy will be with us for many
years to come. Through the Winston-Salem Foundation,
she had established a way to continue to support us
through a designated fund from which Habitat will receive
income each year. Such planned gifts, arranged by supporters during their lifetime to be disbursed after they have
passed away, are important sources of income that help
Habitat fulfill its mission.

“We are blessed each year by planned gifts,” said Sylvia
Oberle, executive director of Habitat Forsyth. “They have
benefited, and continue to benefit, programs like construction education, the building fund and general operating expenses. We were very touched by Mildred’s gift, and it helped
motivate us to establish a formal planned giving program for
others who might like to leave a legacy gift to Habitat, but either haven’t thought about it or would like advice on how to do
it.”

Chris Chapman and Ed Pleasants, two long-time supporters
and former board members, have each graciously included
Habitat in their own planned giving strategies. They are now
advising Habitat on establishing the Legacy Builders Society
for supporters who choose to include Habitat in their estate
plans.

“A lot of people may feel uncomfortable thinking about this subject, or they may worry about giving away money that they themselves may one day need,
because none of us knows how long we will live,” Chapman said. He added, light-heartedly:
“Designating money to Habitat or other organizations — funds they will receive only after your
death — just seemed logical to me, because of course, at that point, I will no longer be needing it!”
Pleasants said he has provided for Habitat as part of a charitable remainder unitrust at the
Winston-Salem Foundation. “I have already moved beyond the phase of paying college tuition
and other expenses, and a deferred gift allows me to provide for my family but also leave
something for Habitat,” he said. “It’s easy to want to support Habitat, because the Habitat
model is one of the greatest examples of a win-win situation. A family becomes homeowners,
and the mortgage payments they make go toward helping more families become homeowners. Habitat truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”
Planned giving does not have to be complicated, nor is it something that only the wealthy do.
It encompasses options as diverse as including a bequest to Habitat in a will, designating
Habitat as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, designating funds from an IRA or other retirement plan, or establishing a charitable remainder trust.

Past Year Brought End of Capital Campaign, New ReStore and More

We made history last year at Habitat
Forsyth, and our annual report thanks
those of you who helped make that
happen.
Our new ReStore opened on Jan. 2,
and was a history-making step in the
growth of Habitat’s donation and retail operations, which helps fund our
building program. And what a difference it has made.
Total revenue January through June was up 41% vs.
the same period a year ago, and average daily sales
of $3,385 eclipsed year-ago average daily sales of
$2,310 by 46%. The store has also been more aggressive in seeking revenue from recycling, now a
measurable amount of monthly income. In addition,
increased visibility has brought higher customer traffic and higher quality donations, with more high-end
furniture, estate items and goods procured from corporate and business prospects.

Habitat Establishes “Legacy Builders”
Last August, Habitat lost a wonderful volunteer with the passing of
Mildred Naugle, an active member of “the toy group” – a team of devoted men
and women who make, and paint, old-fashioned wooden toys for Habitat to sell
as a way to raise funds. Mildred was a familiar face around our office every
Tuesday, never neglecting to look up from her painting to give a cheery greeting to everyone who happened by.
After Mildred’s passing, we learned that her legacy will be with us for many
years to come. Through the Winston-Salem Foundation,
she had established a way to continue to support us
through a designated fund from which Habitat will receive
income each year. Such planned gifts, arranged by supporters during their lifetime to be disbursed after they have
passed away, are important sources of income that help
Habitat fulfill its mission.

“We are blessed each year by planned gifts,” said Sylvia
Oberle, executive director of Habitat Forsyth. “They have
benefited, and continue to benefit, programs like construction education, the building fund and general operating expenses. We were very touched by Mildred’s gift, and it helped
motivate us to establish a formal planned giving program for
others who might like to leave a legacy gift to Habitat, but either haven’t thought about it or would like advice on how to do
it.”

and former board members, have each graciously included
Habitat in their own planned giving strategies. They are now
advising Habitat on establishing the Legacy Builders Society
for supporters who choose to include Habitat in their estate
plans.

“A lot of people may feel uncomfortable thinking about this subject, or they may worry about giving away money that they themselves may one day need,
because none of us knows how long we will live,” Chapman said. He added, light-heartedly:
“Designating money to Habitat or other organizations — funds they will receive only after your
death — just seemed logical to me, because of course, at that point, I will no longer be needing it!”
Pleasants said he has provided for Habitat as part of a charitable remainder unitrust at the
Winston-Salem Foundation. “I have already moved beyond the phase of paying college tuition
and other expenses, and a deferred gift allows me to provide for my family but also leave
something for Habitat,” he said. “It’s easy to want to support Habitat, because the Habitat
model is one of the greatest examples of a win-win situation. A family becomes homeowners,
and the mortgage payments they make go toward helping more families become homeowners. Habitat truly makes a difference in people’s lives.”
Planned giving does not have to be complicated, nor is it something that only the wealthy do.
It encompasses options as diverse as including a bequest to Habitat in a will, designating
Habitat as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy, designating funds from an IRA or other retirement plan, or establishing a charitable remainder trust.
