The city that we call “home”
Dear Friends and Visitors:
I cannot begin to count the number
of times over the years I have been
asked, “Why have you always stayed
in the Silver Lake area?” The short and
simple answer is “I cannot think of a
better place to live.”
Outsiders may say that we have
fewer businesses than we used to have.
The response to that is yes; like many
other communities our size, there are
less, but the ones that we do have are
very loyal and they keep the community’s best interest close to their hearts.
For that we should all be very grateful
and continue to give them our support.
Another thing I hear from visitors,
“there always seems to be something
going on in Silver Lake.” And the reason for that is our city has so many
very fine organizations which are constantly putting on different events to
raise money for their numerous projects.
Silver Lake Mayor Bruce Bebo
Some of the most heartwarming
things you will ever witness are when
an individual or family is in need, the
whole community will come together,
organize and support an event or fund
raiser to help these people out. Like I
have said many times before, without
these many volunteers, small town
America would cease to exist. Hats off
to all these fine individuals who make
up this fine community,
Finally, years ago before our area
communities joined together and
formed our great GSL school district,
our small school’s nickname was the
“Lakeites.” Back then if you ever
asked anyone what a Lakeite was, they
had no definitive answer. Well, I feel
the best answer to that question are all
those individuals described in the paragraphs above and the many fine residents of the Silver Lake Area. Everyone should be proud to call this our
home!
Sincerely,
Mayor Bruce Bebo

Some city ordinances to be aware of ...
The following are some of the more applicable city ordinances that people need to be aware of in Silver Lake:
— Building permits are required in Silver Lake for virtually any type of construction/remodeling project and
these include plumbing and heating as well. Permit forms can be obtained through city hall. The city building inspector is MNSPECT and can be reached at 888-446-1801.
— Animal control ordinance states that if you have more than two cats or dogs you must obtain a permit
through city hall, and if you have pets other than cats, dogs, or indoor caged pets, a permit must also be obtained.
— Silver Lake does enforce parking restrictions for snow removal from November to May each year.
— The city’s blight ordinance does not permit anything that may cause a blighting factor within the community.
— Water/sewer utility accounts are handled through the city.
This is not a complete listing of all city ordinances. Feel free to contact city hall at (320) 327-2412 for more ordinance information.

Planning for Silver Lake’s future
“Something we’re impressing upon the council is
this idea to plan for improvement,” City Clerk
Kerry Venier said about the
2011 plan for the city of Silver Lake.
“One of our biggest plans
is to improve our infrastructure,” Mayor Bruce Bebo
elaborated. “It’ll take
awhile. There is a lot of it.”
City infrastructure needs
include sidewalk maintenance and repair of the water
and sewer lines. They continue to discuss the outlook
for 2011, discussing major
improvement projects as
well as minor projects that
would benefit Silver Lake.
The biggest part of planning for 2011 includes thinking about 2013, which is the
year debt will come off the
budget in Silver Lake.
“We need to see where
our needs are with the debt
coming off,” Venier said.
According to Venier, the
council has taken the approach that “this is the time
to plan, but so it doesn’t
break the bank.” Bebo said.
“If we look at the city’s financial and general funds,
there’s no comparison as to
what it was a few years
ago.”
“Before, we had to pay to
get through the year, and
now we can look at how we
can spend for the future. In
2006, the budget was a half
a month ahead, and now
we’re at three and a half
months ahead,” Venier said
about budget reserves. “Auditors will tell you six
months (in reserves) is
great,” Bebo added.
Although the budget is
looking up for 2011, Bebo
said the city had made “serious budget cuts” to get
there. “And, hopefully, the
View of downtown Silver Lake looking west along Main Street.
state doesn’t cut more of
our aid,” he added. “We
don’t want to spend a lot of
money working on big
things,” Bebo said. “People
like to see things they can
feel and touch and notice
the improvement. After
putting effort into these improvements, we don’t want
them to step outside and see
that the city looks the same.”
Smaller improvement projects include painting the auditorium and building a
more handicap-accessible
ladies’ bathroom in the auditorium.
“It’s a big challenge,” Venier said. “We have such
limited resources and such
big needs. It’s tough to balance it.
“Also, we watch what
other governments are doing
as well, like the school
board for example. They’re
asking and pushing for referendums and money, and
people will be looking at
where money is going when
they see increases in taxes,”
Venier said.
“We (City Council) are
the most visible to the public,” Venier added. “Not
everybody has kids in
school, so they don’t often
pay too much attention to
things like the GSL building
referendum.”
Although Bebo and Venier
discussed the plans for
changes and improvements
to Silver Lake, Bebo added,
“we still have to do things
we did in the past, like the
pool, summer recreation,
and other ongoing projects.
In addition to this planning,
we still have daily requirements of operating the city.”
To begin and manage
these improvements to Silver Lake, such as painting
the auditorium, Bebo and
Venier discussed other resources, such as the help
from the public.
“A city like this is really
based on volunteering,”
Bebo said. He described the
volunteers who showed up
to help with a Cedar Crest
project. “There were people
there from 8 years old to 75
years old. People want to
feel like they’re a part of
something,” Bebo said. “In
today’s world, that’s huge.”
In March 2011, the city
applied for a “Minnesota
Beautiful” grant through the
Valspar Corporation and the
Southwest Initiative Foundation to help fund the painting
project for the auditorium.
Ninety-seven gallons of
paint have been awareded to
the city on the condition that
only volunteers use the paint
for the project. No help can
be hired to complete the project. Currently, seven organizations in Silver Lake have
agreed to volunteer for the
painting project. The City
Council is developing painting priorities for the auditorium and working on creating a painting schedule for
the organizations so that the
project is completed in an
efficient manner. The city
has one year to use the
awarded grant to complete
the project.
The Silver Lake Lake Enhancement Association is
also working to improve the
city by installing two piers
on the shores of Silver Lake.
Currently, the association is
waiting on the approval of
the DNR for the fishing
piers. The hope is for the
piers to be installed by August 2011.

Silver Lake Leader continues
but without the Merrill family
On Jan. 1, the 109-year
history of the Silver Lake
Leader being a part of the
Merrill family came to an
end when Ken and Dorothy
Merrill sold the Leader to
McLeod Publishing of
Glencoe, the parent company of The McLeod County
Chronicle.
Besides the sale, which
was effective Dec. 30, 2010,
the Leader office, long a
fixture on Main Street,
moved into the Zeimer
building, 104B Lake Ave.,
Silver Lake.
In a farewell article in the
Leader, Ken Merrill
summed up his feelings and
that of many others in the
community. “I’m very
happy. I hope the community supports the Leader
(under new ownership) like
we’ve enjoyed.
“It’s a mixed emotion
time. We are happy the Silver Lake Leader continues,
but we’re sad as we leave
the business that has been
such an important piece of
our lives, as we move on
into full retirement.”
Begun in 1901 by W.O.
“Oscar” Merrill with the
help of the Avery family
and the Hutchinson Leader,
Oscar Merrill moved on to
be the Silver Lake postmaster and his sons, Delbert and
Wilbert, took over the business. When Delbert went
into the military service, the
Silver Lake Leader was operated by Wilbert and
Genevieve Merrill, Ken
Merrill’s parents. They continued publishing until their
deaths.
Ken and Dorothy Merrill
purchased the Leader from
Ken’s siblings in 1988 and
continued publishing the
Leader until the Dec. 30
sale.
Ken Merrill said he was
literally born into the newspaper business, in fact, born
in the same building that
housed the Leader office on
Main Street.
“I was born and raised in
this building,” he said. “I
grew up here.”
He said he and his siblings often worked in the
back with the presses, while

his mother worked the old
hot lead linotypes.
“We’d catch and feed the
paper,” Ken said of the old
letter presses that printed on
one side and then the big
newspaper page was flipped
to print on the other side.
He said that was used
until the 1950s when a more
automated press was purchased.
In the 1970s, the newspaper went to off-set printing
that eliminated the need for
the hand presses and linotype equipment.
The first Apple computers
were purchased in the
1990s, and he said the computers “made life a whole
lot easier.”
Ken was the chief financial officer for the city of
Hutchinson for 32 years before he retired.
Dorothy, on the other
hand, worked for many
years for the school districts
of Hutchinson, Silver lake
and Glencoe-Silver Lake
while also doing a second
job —putting out the Leader
each week.
The Merrills said their
children also grew up in the
newspaper business, spending many Tuesday nights in
the Leader office, while
their parents and hired staff
pieced together another edition of the Leader.
Some of the Leader ’s
contibuting writers have
continued, with the history
column by Margaret Benz,
the weather column by Silver Lake native Jake Yurek
and a Czech-Polish history
column by another Silver
Lake native Tony Kadlec.
Yet another Silver Lake
native, Alyssa Schauer has
become the staff writer at
the Silver Lake Leader.
Joining her in putting out
the Leader since the sale
have been Rich Glennie, editor, who writes on the
Glencoe-Silver Lake school
news; Lori Copler, who puts
the Leader together through
computer pagination; and
Brenda Fogarty, the Leader
salesperson and Silver Lake
resident.

Maresh Aquatic Center in Silver Lake
The Bruce Maresh Aquatic Center
continues to be the center point for the
Silver Lake recreation area. It is located near the northwest shore of Silver
Lake. The area features a softball field,
volleyball, tennis and basketball
courts, horseshoe pits and playground.
The Aquatic Center, constructed in
2006, features a beach style entry children’s area with play features, a 20foot water slide and diving board, as
well as an attached picnic shelter.
There also is a concession stand and
security lighting at the bath house.
The Silver Lake Pool and Parks Organization continues to raise money
for improvements to the area and will
be adding a large beach funbrella to
the deck area for sunbathers and families to enjoy. Another long-range goal
for the city is paving the parking lot on
the north side of the pool.
Currently, Teresa Kuester and Gary
Kosek, coordinators for swimming
The Silver Lake pool, which is called the Bruce Maresh Aquatic Center,
opened June 15, 2006. It offers a zero-entry to 3-foot deep pool and a 3foot deep to 10.5-foot deep pool with a diving board and tube slide.
pool activities, are in the process of
developing a new pool schedule that
will not only cater to children and
young adults, but senior citizens as
well. Kuester and Kosek have
arranged a swimming schedule that
will offer designated pool time in the
mornings for senior citizens, lap swim,
and swim club. “We’re hoping to get more seniors to use
the pool,” Kuester said. She
explained that this allows seniors “quiet time” in the pool
and it gives them the opportunity to swim with their
peers.
Kuester is currently working on creating a monthly
schedule for the pool that will
include themed nights, such
as “Hawaiian Night.” She
hopes that the themed nights
will draw more people to the
pool.
“Everybody is so proud of
the aquatic center. And they
should be,” she said. “It has a
small-town atmosphere and
that’s key.”
The aquatics center was
named for the late Bruce
Maresh, who started the drive
for a new pool and formed
the Silver Lake Pool and
Parks Organization in 2002.
The city of Silver Lake
hires a manager to run it, and
it has Red Cross-certified life
guards. All the admissions
collected go to the city for
operation of the facility.

Silver Lake history rich with
ethnicity, faith, industrial folks
Silver Lake’s history can
be traced back to nearly the
beginning of McLeod County itself, according to information published in Silver
Lake’s 1989 centennial
book.
Settlement of the area
began in the 1850s after the
Minnesota Territory was acquired from the Sioux with
the Treaty of Traverse Des
Sioux in 1851.
In spring 1855, a party of
men consisting of Martin
McLeod, Col. J.H. Stevens
and others explored the area
and founded the town of
Glencoe, now the county
seat. At about the same time,
the three Hutchinson brothers chose a sport northwest
of Glencoe and established
the city of Hutchinson.
Silver Lake is known for
its Czechoslovakian and Polish ancestry. The first
Czechs arrived in 1858 and
settled in Rich Valley Township east of Hutchinson.
Some of the early family
names are still remembered
today — Kasper, Maly and
Navratil.
During the Sioux Uprising
of 1862, the Czech families
banded together at the
Kasper home, built their
own stockade, sent out
scouting parties, continued
to try to harvest their crops
and suffered no casualties
through the ordeal.
The beginning of Silver
Lake (once called Fremont)
probably happened in the
1860s.
Like most communities, a
need for a church and a
cemetery played a role in the
early establishment in the
area.
The Czech Catholics established a cemetery at Bear
Creek, about four miles
south of what is now Silver
Lake. Though not much is
known about the Polish migration into the area, people
of Polish descent built a
Catholic church in the village of Silver Lake itself,
with the help of the Czechs,
in about 1879.
The residents of Protestant
descent began to hold religious services in their
homes. Eventually, they
formed the Czech Evangelical Reformed Church, finally building a church home in
1881 after a delay caused by
a grasshopper invasion.
Also in 1881, the Silver
Lake townsite was laid out
by pioneers Jan Jerabek, Jan
Totusek and John Mimms,
who were operating a general store and saw mill. Eight
years later, a petition was
presented to the McLeod
County Board to incorporate
the townsite into a village,
which was granted
Surprisingly, Silver Lake
did not fall to the same fate
as other communities which
were bypassed by the railroad.
In 1887, the Minneapolis
Lyndale and Minnetonka
Railroad was built through
to Hutchinson. The railroad
had proposed to come on the
north side of the lake and
through the town, and had
asked for a subvention of
$6,000. But the businessmen
and farmers were unable to
raise this large sum, and the
railroad line was laid on the
south side of the lake. A Mr.
F.D. Fimon, who owned the
land, gave the railroad 60
acres and expected a town to
spring up. This future town
was often referred to as
South Chicago, although it
was rumored that a town of
“Fimon” was platted. But to
Silver Lake’s early history included a large variety
of businesses and industries, including a creamery.
most people, it was simply
known as South Silver Lake.
A side track and a few stores
were built, but the land was
low and swampy and not desirable, and eventually South
Silver Lake faded away.
The churches have always
played an important part in
Silver Lake’s history. The
Czech and Polish Catholics
worshiped together until
1894, when Father Jiranek, a
Bohemian priest in charge of
the Polish church, took steps
to establish a Czech congregation. The following year,
the Church of St. Joseph was
built and Father Jaroslav
Cermak became its first pastor. A parochial school was
established in 1930.
The Polish Church of St.
Adalbert also founded a
parochial school, much earlier than that of St. Joseph.
The first pastor for the
Protestants was Jan Prucha,
college student. He served
the church in 1887-89, but
then returned to his theological studies.
Later, dissension resulted
in some members of the
Czech Evangelical Re-
formed Church splitting off
and forming the Free Reformed Church.
One of the oldest organizations in the area was the
Bohemian Reading and Educational Society, founded in
1876, and which had its own
building halfway between
Silver Lake and Hutchinson.
It maintained its own library
of about 1,000 volumes of
Czech books in the fields of
history, politics, literature
and philosophy.
Until 1893, the only public schools were rural districts, one of which had a
schoolhouse not far from the
village limits.
Then, Independent School
District 38 was organized
and a four-room schoolhouse was built on the shore
of Silver Lake. In 1912, a
high school department was
organized and graduated its
first class in 1914, with a
total of five members.
The village for many
years also had a bustling
commercial life, with a
brewery, a creamery, and
many others.

Pola-Czesky Days in Silver Lake
Silver Lake has a strong
tradition of community celebrations — from a St.
Patrick’s Day parade to an
ice golf tournament to beanbag tournaments to a fish
fry.
But its most famous celebration occurs each August
— Pola-Czesky days — a
three-day event celebrating
the community’s rich Polish
and Czechoslavkian roots.
There are varying accounts of the celebration’s
date of origin. The 25th anniversary of Pola-Czesky
Days was in 1994, which
means it would have begun
in 1969.
However, other sources
indicated that it started in
about 1975 in anticipation
of the celebration the United
States’ bicentennial in 1976,
showing that peoples of different nationalities had coexisted well in Silver Lake
for nearly 100 years.
In that year, 1975, the celebration was considerably
revived. Letters were sent to
each church and organization asking for representatives on a planning committee.
A three-day format was
chosen, with a Fridayevening introduction to the
Grand parade
celebration, the crowning of
royalty Saturday and a
grand parade on Sunday.
The town has crowned
“royalty” on and off since
1955, when JoAnn Ardolf
was chosen as the first
queen.
In 1975, “junior royalty”
also was selected after the
kiddie parade on Saturday,
as a prelude to the crowning
of the Pola-Czesky royalty
in the evening.
Pola-Czesky Day buttons
have been sold every year
since 1976, becoming collector items for many.
In the past, other activities included toilet bowl
races (an activity which was
resurrected in recent years),
and canoe races.
Other activities over the
years have included (and
sometimes still include)
polka Masses, softball tournaments, lip sync contests,
kiddie carnivals, car shows
flea markets and water ball
tournaments featuring area
fire departments.
There also is a wide variety of food offered throughout the weekend, from pork
chops to chicken to hot dogs
and cheese curds.
This year’s celebration is
set for Aug. 5-7.
The Pola-Czesky queen pageant is one of the highlights of the annual community celebration. The 2010
royalty included, from left, Madeline Mills, junior
princess; Jeni Vasko, princess; Rachel Posusta,
queen; and Taylor Kaczmarek, junior princess.
Toilet bowl races.

Luce Line Trail offers a variety of recreation
Running north of Highway
7, the Luce Line Trail offers a
variety of recreational options.
The gravel trail can be used
for biking, hiking, horseback
riding, mountain biking,
snowmobiling and skiing.
The trail, which is a 63mile-long former railroad
track that runs from the Twin
Cities west past Cosmos,
stretches across the varied
landscapes of metropolitan
and rural Minnesota. It is a
preserved strip of countryside
alive with many varieties of
plants and animals.
Rolling stands of sugar
maple and basswood, along
with many colorful groundcover plants can be found in
the east. West of Hutchinson,
the woods give way to remnants of the tall-grass
prairie,with many prairie
plants still visible.

Silver Lake emergency services
Silver Lake Police
The Silver Lake Police Department is a
proactive police department that prides itself
on community-oriented policing, with its mission statement being: “To provide public protection from crime and provide services that
enhance the safety and quality of life for the
City of Silver Lake.”
The department consists of one full-time
chief, one full-time officer, and three part-time
officers. Treating everyone in a professional, respectful,
and courteous manner is what goes a long way for the
Silver Lake Police Department.
Members of the department train and work closely
with the Silver Lake Ambulance, Silver Lake Fire Department, and the Silver Lake First Responders.
Roles of the police department include things such as
escorts for businesses, checking businesses, security for
the public.
Residents may speak with an officer by calling
320-327-0108, or by contacting the McLeod County dispatch center at 320-864-3134 and leaving a message for
an officer, or by emailing [email protected].
In an emergency, residents are strongly advised to call
911.
Silver Lake Ambulance
Since 1970, the Silver Lake Ambulance has provided the City of Silver Lake, Hale Township and
portions of Rich Valley Township with Basic Life
Support (BLS) ambulance service, responding to
over 100 calls per year. Approximately 15 Minnesota certified EMTs staff the ambulance service,
providing 24/7 coverage.
The ambulance is a 1995 MedTec on a Ford
chassis. Along with the state-required BLS equipment, the service has variances, which allow it to carry
and administer several potential life-saving medications.
The ambulance is funded by the City of Silver Lake,
Hale Township and Rich Valley Township. In addition,
the ambulance staff conducts an annual fund raisier for
additional funding for equipment acquisition.
The ambulance service meets every second Thursday
of the month in the Silver Lake Auditorium. Anyone interested in joining the service can contact the Silver Lake
City Hall at 320-327-2412.
Silver Lake Fire
For more than 100 years the Silver Lake Fire
Department has proudly provided fire and rescue
protection to the residents of the city of Silver
Lake, Hale Township, and portions of Rich Valley,
Winsted and Hassan Valley townships.
With the strong support of the city and townships, the department maintains two pumper
trucks, two tanker trucks, a rescue van equipped
with the jaws of life, a gamma goat (grass rig) and
a six-wheeler for the fire and rescue activities. The
department also maintains a vintage 1932 pumper
truck, which is proudly shown in parades.
Silver Lake firefighters are required to attend the basic
firefighter course through South Central Technical College during their probationary first year on the department. In addition to their initial training, the firefighters
attend drills twice a month and the department holds
monthly meetings.
The department is 28 members strong. In addition to
drills and training the department is also active in the
schools and the community providing fire prevention
training.

County parks offer recreation options
The McLeod County park system
offers services for everything from
an occasional picnic to a full-blown
camping and fishing trip.
There are six parks in the system.
Two of those — Lake Marion Park
and Piepenburg Park — offer
camping, public boat landings, volleyball courts, softball fields, picnic
shelters, showers and other amenities.
Lake Marion Park is located on
the northeast corner of Lake Marion, north and west of Brownton. It
is served by U.S. Highway 15 and
located about 12 miles west of
Glencoe. Those coming from Glencoe can reach the lake by driving
west on County Road 3.
The 86-acre park opened in the
spring of 1981. The land, which
was formerly home to one of the
larger mink ranches in the United
States, was bought in 1975.
The facilities available include
two picnic shelters and grills, a
one-mile hiking trail, a beach (there
is no lifeguard on duty), a fishing
pier, boat landing, main shower
building, camper dump station,
playground equipment, volleyball
pit and a softball field. Also, in season, there are groomed cross-country ski trails.
Lake Marion Park offers campers
36 RV sites and 14 tent sites.
There are many campsites available. Fees for campers who require
electrical service are $22 a day,
$116 per week or $400 a month.
Fees for campers who do not require electrical service are $15 a
day, $79 a week or $270 a month.
There is an additional cost for air
conditioning hookups and use of
the camper dumping station.
To make camping reservations,
contact caretaker Patricia Carey at
11655 State Highway 15, Brownton, MN 55312, 320-328-4479. The
camping area is open May 1 to Oct.
1.
There is a $35 fee to reserve a
park shelter at any of the county
parks. Contact the McLeod County
Swan Lake Park
Swan Lake Park is located three miles northwest of Silver Lake along
County Road 16. Its 82 acres feature a picnic shelter, fishing pier, grills,
open-space activities, natural trails, duck pond, large stand of spruce
trees and groomed cross-country ski trails.
Parks Office, 320-484-4334, to
make reservations.
On the south edge of Lake Marion is the Brownton Rod & Gun
Club, which offers a boat landing, a
picnic and beach area, plus a concession stand. Each Friday night at
the clubroom, there is a steak and
pork chop fry.
Piepenburg Park is located on the
southeast corner of Belle Lake.
From Hutchinson, go north on
Highway 15 to County Road 60,
turn west and continue for 5 miles.
The park features two picnic
shelters with grills, a red rock trail,
a beach (no lifeguard on duty), a
boat landing, a fishing pier, a main
shower building, a camper dumping
station, natural prairie, playground
equipment and horseshoe pits, volleyball court and softball field —
plus groomed cross-country ski
trails.
The fees for camping and the
park shelter are the same as for
Lake Marion Park. To make reservations, contact Merle and Ethel
Olson, 21104 Belle Lake Road,
Hutchinson, MN 55350, 320-5872082.
Reservations for the park shelters
at Piepenburg may be made by contacting the county parks office.
Buffalo Creek Park, three miles
southeast of Glencoe (near the air-
port), is a little more than 45 acres
and features a picnic shelter with
tables and grills, playground equipment, open space activities, nature
trail, duck pond, a large stand of
spruce trees and groomed crosscountry ski trails.
Swan Lake Park is located three
miles northwest of Silver Lake on
County Road 16 and is 82 acres in
size. It features a picnic shelter,
fishing pier, grills, open space activities, natural trail, duck pond,
large stand of spruce trees and
groomed cross-country trails.
William May Park is located
three miles east of Winsted off of
County Road 85. Seventy-one acres
in size, it features a picnic shelter,
tables, grills, nature trail and a large
stand of maple trees.
Stahl’s Lake Park is located 6-1/2
miles northwest of Hutchinson and
is 127 acres in size. It features a
picnic shelter, tables, grills, a boat
tile connecting French Lake to
Stahl’s Lake, a nature trail, a duck
pond, a tree nursery and groomed

Business Expo annually in January. The Expo features vendors
from businesses in Silver Lake
and surrounding area.
The vendors present information about their businesses and
offer incentives for visitors to the
Expo. Vendors also include local
churches and non-profit organizations, along with state representatives and members from the public
services, such as the police and
fire departments.
The Business Expo also attracts
children and families as it offers
activities like Cub Scouts derby
races and free flu clinics.
In March, the Christian Deer
Hunters Association hosts the annual Big Little Hunting and Fishing Expo. This Expo features vendors from taxidermy businesses
and meat markets, fishing and
hunting guides, and Christian
hunting organizations. This Expo
also offers seminars on hunting
and fishing and minnow races for
kids to enjoy.
Buisnesses like the Minnesota
Official Measurers and the Minnesota Trappers Association also
are present at this expo.

Glencoe — Valley in Scotland

rain, and only the smallest of corn
crops was raised.
1936 — The most prolonged cold
snap occurred, beginning Jan. 15, as
temperatures held below zero, day and
night, for 26 days. Temperatures
reached 35 below zero and froze water
mains that were six feet under ground.
Nov. 11, 1940 — The Veterans Day
storm of 1940 started out with a warm
rain with fog, but by 9 a.m. a violent
storm front rolled in and hit the area
with one of its worst snowstorms of the
century. The raging snow storm closed
roads, trapped hunters and killed numerous people throughout the state as
temperatures dipped to 13 below zero
before the day ended. The cold temperatures prevailed without a thaw until
mid April of 1941.

Now Open in Silver Lake
CEDAR CREST is a family owned business, originating in Hutchinson in 1984, followed by Cosmos in 2003
and now Silver Lake in 2009. Our goal is to eliminate the need for residents to relocate by accommodating
individual changing needs. Also to provide maximum dignity, privacy, independence, choice, and safety. We
also encourage family and community involvement.
Physical Building: Our newest facility consists of 40 resident rooms which are approximately 350 sq. ft. Each room has a
private 1/2 bath, spacious closet, and a mini-kitchen. (We provide 3 meals a day to our residents.) It is a two-story building on
the shores of Silver Lake. The facility consists of 30 resident rooms plus a 10-bed Memory Loss Unit with its own community and dining areas.
Services: Cedar Crest has always taken pride in our unique services. We are the only 24-hour customized living (assisted
living) that provides either minimal care or total care within a 30-mile radius of our three facilities. Our nursing staff consists
of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Trained Medication Aids and Home Health Aids. Our trained medication
aids go through the same training that is provided by the state of MN. They then must prove their skills to our RN before they
are allowed to pass medications on their own. Our staff goes through regular inservices for continued learning and they have
special training in Dementia cares and end of life cares, however, we always welcome our local Hospice if the family prefers.
Services included in the base rate will include: •Initial assessment by registered nurse. •Follow-up assessments every
62 days to ensure continuum of cares. •Medication distribution and monitoring. •24-hour supervision. •Minimal assistance
with daily cares. •Three meals a day plus snacks. •Activities. •Laundry. •Maintenance. •Companionship and peace of mind.
Other services that will be at an extra charge will include but not be limited to: Assistance with ambulation,
dressing, toileting, eating, special treatments or special diets, etc. We do not provide any physical therapy (except range of
motion as directed by a doctor), or occupational therapy, etc. but we will arrange for in-house therapies or schedule outside
appointments and provide and/or arrange transportation. The only type of cares that we can not provide are invasive life-reserving measures such as intravenous feeding or respirators, etc. By providing extensive services, it eliminates the need for
the elderly resident to ever have to transfer to a different facility.
