AT THE halfway stage of its
four-year mission to improve
the quality of education and
build resilience to natural disasters into schools in Nepal,
Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) in
partnership with Vodafone
Qatar has reported impressive progress in protecting
communities and saving lives
across the country.
“At Vodafone, we believe
our role goes beyond offering
products and services, which
is why we established this
partnership with Reach Out
To Asia in 2009 as we aim to
contribute to community
development in Qatar and
also in other countries such
as Nepal where the support is
needed,” said Dana Haidan,
head of corporate responsibility at Vodafone Qatar.
“Our partnership with
Reach Out to Asia is a longstanding commitment that
reflects our belief in the
importance of collaboration
between the private agencies
and NGOs as both compli-

ment each other with their set
of unique skills and expertise
and their joint efforts optimise the impact that ensures
the benefits of the communities in need are widely
spread,” continued Dana.
Despite making considerable progress towards reducing poverty, Nepal remains
one of the poorest countries
in South Asia. In addition,
large areas of the country are
all too frequently devastated

by natural disasters, including earthquakes and flooding.
Given that a considerable
percentage of Vodafone customers are from Nepal,
Vodafone decided to partner
with ROTA and invest in
community development in
Nepal as a result of its belief
in its corporate responsibility
to reach out and give back.
Working in 22 villages in
the Kailali district of western
Nepal, the Vodafone-ROTA
partnership, through the
Disaster Risk Reduction
(DRR) project, has improved
the lives of 68,000 students
and 1,450 teachers in 150
schools since 2010.
“Disaster risk reduction
(DRR) begins with the belief
that there is no such thing as
a ‘natural’ disaster, only natural hazards. DRR aims to
reduce the damage caused by
natural calamities like earthquakes and floods by under-
standing the hazard and
knowing how to prevent or
reduce the devastation it can
cause,” Rania Abou Mosleh,
international programme
specialist, said.
Determined to promote
‘safe school’ standards
amongst parents, students
and teachers at both the district and national level,
ROTA, in partnership with
Mercy Corps, Action Aid in
Nepal and the Nepal Red
Cross, has supplied first-aid
training and equipment to 35
schools, brought together 55
schools to participate in a
DRR awareness raising quiz
and planted 10,000 seedlings
to increase land retention.
Nirmala Bam Malla, head
teacher
of
Saraswoti
Secondary
School
in
Durgauli, said: “The first-aid
training has proved to be
one of the most worthy
trainings for the school. We
are proud since we have four
trained first-aid teachers
and students who have been
doing wonderful jobs. It has
supported us to make the
school safe.”
A TWO-DAY education
exhibition offering guidelines on courses in various
universities in India opened
at the Doha Exhibition
Centre on Friday.
The Indian Property Expo
organised alongside the
education exhibition is an
additional attraction for
expatriates looking to make
safe investments in major
Indian cities.
Deputy Mission Head of
Mission at the Indian
embassy Sasi Kumar inaugurated the two events
organised by Doha-based
event management group,
Apex Events.
The education expo is for
the benefit of a large number of students who are
planning to study in Indian
institutions. Information
about scholarships in the
institutions is a key highlight of the event.
Samiullah Khan, vicepresident
at
SRM
University, pointed to a new
trend among students in the
Gulf region many of whom
now prefer South Indian
universities to those in the
North. “Parents in the
region generally believe that
the South is safer than the
North,” Khan said.
“Usually, not more than
500 students from the Gulf
used to enroll for courses
annually but now we are
getting a huge response
from students in Doha. We
are expecting over 100 students from Qatar this year
as against the 50 enrolled
last year. The number of girl
students who registered for
engineering and medicine
also increased this year,”
Khan said.
Most of the institutions
have set up facilities for
‘Spot Registration’ and have
Internet facilities to facilitate fee payment.
The major institutions
participating in the event
are
SRM
University,
Chennai, Acharya Institute,
Bangalore, Vishwashanthi
Gurukul,
Pune,
Ramdeobaba Engineering
College, Nagpur, MVJ
College of Engineering,
Bangalore,
Jain
International Residential
School, Bangalore, and
Somaiya
Group
of
Institutions in Mumbai.
Over 300 courses in medicine, engineering, business,
hotel management, catering, mass communication,
pharmacy, education and
law are being offered by the
institutions.
Hussain Ahmed, a visitor
at the exhibition, said that
students and their parents
living abroad have limitations when it came to faceto-face interaction with representatives of major educational institutions in
India.
A total of 54 exhibitors
based in major Indian cities
like Mumbai, New Delhi,
Chennai,
Bangalore,
Hyderabad, Ahmadabad,
Surat,
Jaipur
and
Thiruvananthapuram are
participating in the property exhibition.

THE 16th Aalmi Frogh-eUrdu Adab Award was presented to Pakistan’s writer,
poet and columnist Ata ul Haq
Qasmi and India’s well-known
fiction writer Shamoil Ahmed
at a glittering function organised by the Majlis Frogh-eUrdu Adab at Doha Sheraton
Hotel on Wednesday.
A special Frogh-e-Urdu
Adab Award was also given to
acclaimed Indian actor
Naseeruddin
Shah.
Dr
Marzooq Bashir bin Marzooq,
head of Cultural Research and
Studies Department at the
Ministry of Culture, Arts and
Heritage, presented the
awards to the recipients.
Instituted in 1996, the Aalmi
Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Award
(international award for the
promotion of Urdu literature),
is given annually to two Urdu
creative writers and scholars one from India and the other
from Pakistan - for their contribution to the Urdu language
and literature. The Special
Frogh-e-Urdu Adab Award
was conferred for the first
time.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to
Qatar HE M Sarfraz Khanzada
and Indian Ambassador HE
Sanjiv Arora were present on
the occasion. Pakistan’s noted
Urdu scholar and poet
Khurshid Rizvi presided over
the function while India’s
renowned Urdu scholar and
former Chairman of Sahitiya
Academy Dr Gopi Chand

guest of honour. The programme started with the
recitation of some of the verses
from the Holy Quran by Qari
Shams-ur-Rahman Siddiqui.
Javed Humayun welcomed
the award winners and poets
on the stage. Shaukat Ali Naz
and Syed Fahimuddin compered the programme.
Ijaz
Haider,
Syed
Fahimuddin and M Sabih
Bukhari read papers on the life
and literary achievements of
the awardees. Congratulating
the award winners Marzooq
said, “I feel privilleged and
honoured to be representing
Minister of Culture, Arts and
Heritage HE Dr Hamad Abdul
Aziz al Kuwari who could not
attend the function due to
some important engagements.” He said the goal of his
ministry was to promote art,
cultural and literary activities
not only among nationals but
also among different nationalities residing in the country. “I
admire Urdu because it is a
beautiful combination of different languages. Urdu has
close affinity with Arabic as it
derives a large number of
words from Arabic and shares
90 percent of its alphabets
with Arabic,” Marzooq noted.
Arora, speaking in chaste
Urdu, said that he was happy
to learn about the activities of
the forum aimed at promoting
Urdu language. “It is a matter
of honour for me that I am
attending a function along with
Pakistan’s ambassador,” said
the Indian envoy. He noted
that Urdu is a sweet and beautiful language, not confined to
any country or any religion. It
belongs to India and Pakistan
as much as it belongs to some
other countries.

AROUND 300 Kenyan expatriates gathered for a community programme in Doha, on
Friday. The first of its kind
event was organised by the
community elders.
The interactive social
gathering focused on socialising and how to overcome
homesickness.
Both single and married
men were given tips on cultural etiquette. The men later
took part in football matches
at Al Ahli Sports Club.
Kenyan delicacies like Githeri
were dished out in plenty on
the occasion.
A Kenyan embassy representative encouraged the
community members to register with the embassy in
order to be eligible to vote for
the Kenyan general elections
in March 2013.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune,
the Elder of the Kenyan Community Edwin Muzame said,

advice on how to live away
from home. We also encouraged them to respect the
Qatari laws as well as appreciating the local values and
culture. We provided them
tips on how to deal with the
culture shock,” he said.

“I regret that I could not formally learn Urdu despite the
fact that my father was wellversed in Urdu and Persian
languages,” remarked Arora.
Khazada said that Majlis’s
awards are acclaimed internationally and forum’s officials
deserve all praise. He said that
Urdu, which is the national
language of Pakistan, is widely
spoken in the world. “Urdu is a
language of communication in
the Gulf countries where expatriates of different countries
reside,” said Khanzada, adding
that even many Arabs can
understand Urdu. He noted
that Urdu is a very rich language and Urdu poets and
writers have played a great
role to promote it.
Majlis’
Chairman
Mohammad Atiq congratulated the award winners, who
were selected by two independent panels of juries headed by Mushtaq Ahmed Yousufi
in Lahore and Professor Gopi
Chand Narang in New Delhi.
Atiq thanked Qatar’s Ministry
of Culture, Arts and Heritage
for extending its co-operation
to the Majlis in organising the
function. He paid glowing tributes to the services of Majlis’
late founder Malik Museeb-urRehman who relentlessly
worked for the promotion of

AROUND 230 swimmers
took part in the 5th H2O
Short Course Autumn Cup
organised by H2O Swim Club
at the American School of
Doha indoor pool on Friday.
The three-day event which
began on Thursday saw
swimmers as young as sevenyear-olds from 19 clubs
belonging to seven countries
contesting for the Cup. The
championship will conclude
on Saturday where winners
will be awarded with medals.
Countries represented at the
event included the UAE, Lebanon, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia,
Russia, Bahrain and Qatar.
Males and females competed in different categories like
backstroke, butterfly, freestyle, breaststroke and individual medley. There was also a
special H2O Challenge event.
Speaking to Qatar Tribune,
H2O Swim Club Managing
Director Seema Pascoe said,
“This was the largest event of
the H2O Short Course
Autumn Cup. These kinds of
events promote sports culture
in Qatar and the region.”
“The aim of this event is to
spread the awareness of
swimming in Qatar. Sport
helps in time management.
It’s an important part of
everybody’s life. This event
has been growing since the
day it started. We are happy to
get support from various clubs
in Qatar. Our intention is to
hold sporting events for everyone. We are happy to host
clubs from outside Qatar. We
want to make this event recognised globally,” she added.
She further said, “Seeing
children smile while achieving their personal best is very
encouraging. They train so
hard all year round. Our
motto is to participate, challenge and achieve.”
Pascoe added that the H2O
Swim Club opened a club in
Abu Dhabi recently. Regarding this, she said, “We want
H2O to be part of the child’s
life when their parents leave
Qatar. The parents are
committed. I would like to
thank ASD and the parents
for their support.”
Clubs which took part in the
championship were Al Ahli,
H2O Swim Club, Piranhas
Swim Club, Qatar Woman
Sports Committee, Torpedoes
and Al Saad from Qatar; Aqua
Sports Academy, Sports Life
Swimming Club and Wahoo
Sports (the UAE); Cougars, Al
Jazira Club, Al Najah Club (Lebanon); Elite Swim Team (Kuwait); King Faisal Specialist
Hospital, Kohbar Laser Swim
Team, Ras Tanura Swim Club
and Team Typhoon (Saudi
Arabia); and Yantar (Russia).
Praising the event Rola
Natour, administrator at
Cougars, said, “The event is
well organised. We took part
in a similar event in April. We
tried to inspire the swimmers
to fare better,” he said.
Alex Borodai, a coach at
King Faisal Specialist Hospital who came with 23 swimmers from Saudi Arabia all
aged between 8 and 16 years
of age, said, “Events such as
these create a competitive
environment which motivates
the swimmers. Parent’s
involvement is also important. It’s good to mingle with
swimmers from other countries to share experiences. I
believe my swimmers will get
trophies by the end of the
contest on Saturday,” he said.
Pierre Estragues, a swimmer from Piranhas swim team,
who participated in six events,
said, “I started swimming when I was 10. Backstroke is my
favourite,” said the 15-year-old
student of the French school.
Katara hosts Schiller’s Mary Stuart
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
KATARA hosted the critically
acclaimed and award-nominated Mary Stuart, a play by
Friedrich Schiller which
depicts the last days of Mary,
Queen of Scots.
The performance took
place on Thursday and Friday
with the third and final show
to be held at the Drama
Theatre Building 16 on
Saturday.
Schiller’s Mary Stuart talks
about a political prisoner
accused of extremism, incitement of war and masterminding assassination.
The play tells a story of
injustice and betrayal which
depicts the struggle of power
between, Mary Queen of
Scots and her cousin,
Elizabeth I.
Dr Khalid Ibrahim al
Sulaiti, general manager of
Katara, said, “Mary Stuart is
an incredible piece of art. It
has earlier played to sell-out
houses and we are proud to
present the revival of the
tour at Katara. We are
delighted to offer Qatari residents a piece of classic
British theatre which seeks
to provide an understanding
of British history. Mary
Stuart is a testimonial of
Katara’s commitment to promote cultural awareness
through arts, educating and
entertaining while building
cultural bridges.”
Set design for the production of Mary Stuart is minimalist which is complimented
by costumes which represent
Elizabethan England. The use
of projections gives the play a
refreshing take on Schiller’s
masterpiece.
An adaptation of Mary
Stuart was staged at the New
Diorama Theatre in London
in early 2012 by The Faction
Theater Company, as part of
a repertory season. The production was the third
Schiller play translated and
adapted by Daniel Millar and
Mark Leipacher and staged
by the company.
