Preserving Natural Areas Since 1960
Land: a community to which we belong
In the foreword to his A Sand County Almanac, Aldo Leopold wrote,
“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us.
When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to
use it with love and respect.” That deep sense of land as a community
led a small group of people in 1960 to form and nourish ACRES.

That spirit continues in ACRES to this day.
In acquiring its areas, ACRES has been honored with gifts of both land
and funds. The areas exemplify the best of the region’s available natural
areas. They offer the opportunity to renew contact with the earth, if only to
escape the stress of daily living. They also remind us of the natural heritage
that nourished our ancestors.
It is their beauty that often leads us to seek a better understanding of the
interplay of the complex processes at work in them. Scientific research has
led to a richer understanding of these processes and to a growing public
awareness of their potential benefits for us. In our most aware and sensitive
moments, we may be fortunate enough to be moved by the spiritual values
we find in them. Land and its life have made our lives on earth possible.

ADAMS COUNTY
The St. Mary’s and Wabash Rivers flow across the county from southeast
to northwest. The St. Mary’s River drains most of the northern part of the
county and flows into the Maumee River. The Wabash River drains much of
the southern part of the county and eventually flows into the Ohio River.
The county’s largest natural feature, the Limberlost Swamp, once covered
13,000 acres of Adams and Jay Counties.

ALLEN COUNTY
The county’s surface features are characteristic of a glaciated region,
varying from low-lying, level and depressed areas (the sites of ancient lakes)
to the rolling and hilly features of moraines. In the eastern portion of the
county, the Maumee Lake Bottom, once known as the Great Black Swamp,
encompasses over 100 square miles. The county’s only natural lake
is Lake Everett, in the northwest corner.

Blue Cast Springs protects over 3,000 feet of the
Maumee River bank and is the site of a natural spring
once thought to have healthful properties. Bluffs
30-feet high offer vistas of the Maumee River and
one of its islands. Native Americans likely used these
bluffs to overlook the river’s canoe traffic. A number
of ravines running through the upland forest feed into
the river.

The ACRES office is located in this preserve.
Built of cedar and stone on a bluff high
over Cedar Creek, the office was originally
the home of Tom and Jane Dustin, two of the
founding members of the organization. Trails
wind through meadows and woodlands, one leading
to a wetland filled in springtime with horned bladderwort
and the call of spring peepers. Another trail climbs a
steep hill along the preserve’s southern boundary formed
by Cedar Creek, one of only three designated Indiana
Natural, Scenic and Recreational Rivers.

Fox Fire Woods is high, well-drained land producing
a woodland where the dominant trees are oak and
hickory. Along the west side are wild plum and
hawthorn trees. The Fox Fire name is from a fungus
that grows on decaying vegetation on the woodland
floor and glows eerily in the dark.

Hammer Wald is in various stages of forest
succession. There’s a field that was cultivated and now
has scattered ash, red maple, hawthorn, basswood,
elm, black walnut and hop hornbeam — trees of early
succession. There’s a mature forest of beech, hickory,
sugar maple, tulip, cherry and oak trees. The variety
of trees and stages of tree growth are matched by the
variety of birds and wildflowers.

This is a floodplain forest where the drainage
divides among the Eel, Wabash, St. Joseph
and Maumee Rivers. There are wet areas,
except during periods of drought, and old
stream meanders. Jack-in-the-pulpit and ferns
are common, and an unusual wildflower growing
here is green dragon.

The Little Wabash River Nature Preserve is a place
of trees. The land donor constructed a pond and
planted cedar, cottonwood and willow trees around
it. River birch grow along the trail, as well as
scattered northern white oak and red maple on the
higher ground. Interspersed are spruce, basswood,
hickory, beech, elm, tulip, black cherry, sweetgum,
dogwood, sumac and bald cypress — some growing

The Maumee River Overlook is a high forested
embankment overlooking the Maumee River.
A water-powered sawmill was once located nearby
on an outcrop of rocks in the river. Lumber from
the mill was used in the Wabash & Erie Canal,
which ran along the south border of the preserve.

This preserve protects a picturesque high
south bank of the St. Joseph River, ravines
of Davis Fisher Creek and an old-growth
maple woods where a maple sugar camp
operated for many years. There are still
remnants of the sugar camp. The woods have
sugar maple, tulip, red and white oak, beech, ash
and sycamore. Spring brings a carpet of wildflowers
beneath the trees — spring beauty, large-flowered
trillium, cut-leafed toothwort and many more.

At this reserve, you will see three stages
of forest succession. First, there is an open
meadow with stands of hawthorn and gray
dogwood. Then, there are early-stage woods
of elm, shagbark hickory and maple, plus a
mature forest of sugar maple, beech, oak and
shagbark and shellbark hickory. Finally, there is
a beech/maple forest. The three habitats and
their variety of trees also mean a variety of birds
and wildflowers.

Directions:
This preserve is nature adjacent to the
modern world in the form of Interstate 69,
and the sound of traffic is ever-present. Yet
the visitor who can ignore the traffic noise
can enjoy the view of Cedar Creek from a high
escarpment, as well as trails through old fields,
by a marsh and across ravines. Beneath the trees,
twinleaf, hepatica, Dutchman’s breeches, bloodroot
and rue anemone bloom in spring, and in the wetland,
wood ducks and great blue and green herons are
frequently seen.

Preserving Natural Areas Since 1960
FULTON COUNTY
The north-central part of the county is a rolling morainic area dissected
by streams and tributaries of the Tippecanoe River. The southwest part
of the county consists of nearly level to strongly sloping areas, with numerous
small lakes and wetlands. The Tippecanoe River, flowing from east to west
across the county, is considered the “river of lakes” because it is fed by
88 natural lakes, swamps, streams and springs. These water sources
provide a continuous flow of clean, fresh water.

The Ruth Kern Woodland Preserve is another
property of varied habitat, with the Tippecanoe
River flowing on its southern boundary. There is
an older-growth bottom-land forest, an upland
secondary-growth forest, a former Christmas tree
farm and approximately five acres of wetlands. The
forested areas include hardwoods and pines. In the
Tippecanoe River are several endangered species,
including two species of mussels and four species
of fish.

HUNTINGTON

The Wabash River, Little River, Salamonie River and their tributaries all flow
through the county. The Little River drains into the Wabash River in Huntington
at the Historic Forks of the Wabash. The topography along these rivers is strongly
sloping to very steep, providing excellent opportunities to view exposed bedrock,
ancient reef remnants and unique plant habitats typically associated with the
limestone bluffs of southern Indiana landscapes.

This preserve takes its name from the Miami
word for “peace.” A small pond near the entrance
mirrors surrounding trees and shrubs, giving you
a feeling of peace just before you enter the forested
area. Rolling upland woods are dominated by oak
and hickory trees, with some maple, beech and black
cherry. This upland forest is dissected by a number
of 20-foot-deep ravines brought about by natural
erosion. The mixture of wide and narrow trails makes
this preserve a pleasure to hike.

In Hebrew, Tel means “high” and Hy means “life,”
and the names, individually or together, are
appropriate. From a bluff high above, visitors have a
splendid view of the winding Wabash River. There is
life along the river and on the land above — beech and
maple trees, sycamores and willows, and a variety
of birds and wildflowers, including wood ducks on
the river; scarlet tanagers and wood thrushes in the
trees; and wild ginger, celandine poppy and
rue anemone blooming in season on the ground.

JAY COUNTY
The county is characterized by a nearly level glacial till plain between
three concentric moraines with gentle to moderately sloping relief.
The northern region is drained by two branches of the Loblolly Creek and
a small stretch of the Wabash River. This area is a glacial outwash valley
known as Magic Valley, which extends through the Salamonie Moraine.
The central and southern portions are drained by the Salamonie River and
its tributaries, flowing from southeast to northwest, ultimately discharging
into the Wabash River. The northern portion of the county was once part of
the Limberlost Swamp, which also extended into Adams County.

Once part of a homestead called Spring Brook Farm,
this preserve has abandoned farm fields, as well as
grasslands and second-growth woods of oak, hickory
and maple. Rocky streams form the north and west
boundaries. Louis A. Bibler grew up here and wrote
Back Home Again, the story of his childhood at
Spring Brook. Where he once played, visitors may
see birds of field and forest, and wildflowers such
as twinleaf and false Solomon’s seal.

From 1854 to 1975, students attended school at this
site, first in a log cabin, then in a “modern” school
built in 1923. Today, a boulder with an inscription
commemorates the school, and sugar maple,
ash, hickory and oak trees grow where students
once played. There’s an understory of smaller
trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Slowly the trees are
maturing, and through natural succession, the other
vegetation is changing.

Sap was once harvested from the maples here and
boiled down into syrup. This beech/maple woods
also includes tulip, sycamore, black cherry and blue
ash — an unusual tree in the area. The grinding of
glaciers over the area left several depressions that are
now small ponds, the largest approximately an acre
and a half. Flowering trillium blooms abundantly
here in spring, and tall-grass prairie plants have been
established in a field.

Glennwood contains a circumneutral bog, one of
only 15 in Indiana. The bog once was a lake, but it is
now nearly filled with a springy mat of mosses, ferns
and sedges resting on a bed of peat. Poison sumac,
pin oak, willow and red maple surround the bog
area. In the forest around the bog grow Canadian
mayflower, shiny club moss and sarsaparilla,
as well as cinnamon, crested shield and royal ferns.
The preserve is noted for spectacular fall color.

LAGRANGE
COUNTY
Although the terrain of the county is relatively level, the countryside is
comprised of numerous lakes, bogs and marshes. It is home to a rare geological
formation called The Knobs, a high ridge extending north of U.S. Highway 20
from the village of Plato. The largest natural feature in LaGrange County
is the Pigeon River Fish and Wildlife Area, encompassing more than
12,000 acres along a meandering 16-mile stretch of the Pigeon River.

The centerpiece of this preserve is the
Fawn River, which winds back and forth
across the Michigan/Indiana line. Woods
along the river are second-growth, with
small pockets of older trees where there
has been no clearing. This is a floodplain

Two adjacent preserves serve as one: ACRES
Maple Wood Nature Preserve and the LaGrange
County Parks Nature Preserve. The county preserve
has a visitor center, a maple syrup camp and a variety
of year-round programs. Visitors may hike trails
in both preserves. Common species of trees include
sugar maple and butternut, and a variety of birds
and wildflowers abound, the latter including cranefly,
puttyroot and a display of white trillium that nearly
covers the ground in spring.

Stark borders and protects part of the Pigeon River,
one of the few unaltered and undredged rivers in
northern Indiana. A walk on the trail near the river
reveals that the water is tea-colored from the tannin
found in the surrounding wetlands. A prominent
feature of the property is an oxbow of the Pigeon
River. This oxbow usually contains water. The
resulting u-shaped pond is used by wood ducks
for feeding, breeding and raising their young.
If you don’t see these ducks, you may hear their
“meep-meep-meep” call.

Preserving Natural Areas Since 1960
MIAMI COUNTY
The county is defined by four physiographic divisions: upland till plain,
the Packerton Moraine, outwash terraces and bottom lands. The upland till
plain is nearly level, except along major stream valleys, where it grades from
gently sloping to very steep. The Packerton Moraine, which extends over much
of the northern third of the county, is characterized by frequent and abrupt
changes in slope and surface texture. Outwash terraces are most extensive
along the Eel, Wabash and Mississinewa Rivers. The bottom lands are
nearly level and occur along the rivers and creeks.

NOBLE COUNTY
Located in the northern lakes natural region, Noble County has more lakes
than any other county in Indiana. The topography in the outwash plains of
the northwestern part of the county ranges from level to gently sloping, with
stronger relief around the lakes, stream banks and kettle lakes near the rivers.
Noble County is primarily drained by the north and south branches of
the Elkhart River and their tributaries. The Elkhart River flows west to
the St. Joseph River and drains into Lake Michigan.

This little gem’s level trails meander through a
beautiful upland woods dominated by beech trees
ranging from saplings to mature trees. The larger
trees with smooth gray bark are reminiscent of
columns rising toward the canopy. In late fall, you
can recognize the beech saplings because they hold
their light-tan leaves well into winter. Some of the
property’s largest trees are oaks, and common
woodland birds are abundant. Even though this
preserve is named for its donor, Florence Badger,
it is possible that a badger could be observed.

This was a “Green Grocer” farm where vegetables
were grown and sold to the residents of Kendallville
and the surrounding area. Now trees, including
many redbuds, grow where corn and beans and other
produce once grew. Round Lake forms a wetland
boundary along the northeast part of the preserve.
Plants include shrubby cinquefoil, red osier dogwood,
cattails and sedges. Birds are as varied as the plants,
and deer are frequently seen.

The Art Hammer Wetlands is the largest
ACRES preserve. It has a variety of habitats:
swamp forest with cottonwood and sycamore
trees, upland forest with oaks and hickories,
a small lake, portions of the Elkhart River and
areas of low wetlands. Birds and wildflowers are
diverse. Wood ducks, mallards, other ducks and coots
are seen on the water. Woodland birds fly among the
trees, and great blue and green herons walk along the
shores. Cardinal flowers, marsh marigolds, blue flag
iris and marsh mallow are a few of the flowers that
bloom here.

Lonidaw is a Native American name
meaning “Spirit Queen of the Woods.” The
wife of Potowatomi Chief Simon Pokagon
bore the name. Perhaps her spirit is still
among the beech and maple trees on the high
ground, or the sugar maple, red elm, walnut and
hackberry standing on the lower ground. Maybe her
spirit is among the wildflowers: wild columbine and
celandine poppy on the higher ground, or the skunk
cabbage and marsh marigold in the low wetland
around the shore of Little Whitford, a five-acre kettle
lake, or with the birds and other wildlife that are seen
in this preserve.

The Edna W. Spurgeon Woodland Reserve
was the first ACRES property. It’s an area
of low ridges, or kames, left by glaciers and
cut by glacial meltwater. A climax forest of
beech, sugar maple and tulip trees that are
among the largest in the state covers the area.
Beneath the trees grow large-flowered and sessile
trillium (also known as toadshade), blue-eyed Mary,
bloodroot, hepatica, celandine poppy, Dutchman’s
breeches and squirrel corn.

COUNTY
Ohio
The physical features of the county were formed during various stages of glacial
lake activity and are located entirely within the Lake Plain section of the Central
Lowlands physiographic division. The uniformity of the landscape is characterized
by broad flats and the dissecting nature of the Auglaize and Maumee Rivers and
their tributaries, as well as dunes and remnants of glacial lake shorelines.

This preserve contains both upland and floodplain
forest divided by the serpentine flow of Flat Rock
Creek. The creek and mature forest attract abundant
wildlife and provide great scenic vistas. Flat Rock
Creek is one of very few unaltered creeks remaining in
the area. Its meandering course has been directed only
by its own movement through the centuries.

Preserving Natural Areas Since 1960
STEUBEN COUNTY
Glacial activity shaped this area, often referred to as the “land of 101 lakes.”
These lakes are nestled within rolling plains, upland forests and marshy areas
within the northern lakes natural region. Most of the county is drained by
Pigeon Creek and its tributaries. Pigeon Creek begins in the northeast corner of
Steuben County and flows west into the Pigeon River. The southeastern region
of Steuben County is drained by Fish Creek, which flows south along the state line
and into the St. Joseph River in Ohio. The northwestern part of the county
is drained by the Fawn River, Crooked Creek and other tributaries,
which eventually drain into the St. Joseph River in Michigan.

Located on the north side of Ball Lake, this preserve
includes a low wetland forest. Partridgeberry and
other plants, likely carried here by the glaciers,
grow beneath the trees. Marsh marigold and skunk
cabbage flourish in the wetlands.

These preserves protect all of Pigeon Pond and
portions of Pigeon Lake and Pigeon Creek, reminding
us of a time when wild pigeons visited the area.
Rolling meadows, wetland forests and a kame-like
hill offer opportunities for good viewing of white-tailed
deer and wild turkeys. In the summertime, cardinal
flower, white snakeroot and tall blue bellflower
greet visitors with their respective red, white
and blue blossoms.

This woodland, dominated by oak, hickory and cherry,
is located within the city of Angola. A mature woods

the preserve is most unusual because a forest of this
quality is rare within a city limits. There are some wet
areas, so expect to see a variety of plants and animals.

Robb Hidden Canyon is a steep-sided ravine
with a clear stream running through it.
There are beech and maple trees on the
slopes, and a grassy meadow at the top
from which a visitor has a panoramic view of
Ball Lake. Beneath the trees on the slopes grow
bishop’s cap, jewelweed, rue anemone, wild phlox,
black cohosh, spring beauty, Virginia waterleaf
and large-flowered trillium. In the trees are scarlet
tanagers, indigo buntings, wood thrushes and
rose-breasted grosbeaks.

Here are a ridge moraine, a kettle-hole lake
and boulders from rocky outcrops farther
north, all visible evidence of the passing of
the great glaciers. The low wetland was
once an acidic bog with sphagnum moss
and cranberries. Now tamarack, yellow birch
and red maple grow there along with tussocks of
cinnamon fern, mountain holly and winterberry. On
the drier land is an oak/hickory forest with red, white
and black oak, as well as shagbark hickory, and in
the understory are sassafras, dogwood and hazelnut.
The varied habitat means a variety of birds and
wildflowers are present.

Glaciers sculpted this country, creating
rolling hills and gravel and sand kames,
as well as a kettle-hole lake, Cemetery Lake.
The preserve has an upland oak/hickory
forest, once-cultivated fields in different stages
of succession and wetlands by the lake. This is a
natural sanctuary for birds, other wildlife and plants.
A platform near the creek is used by visitors looking
for ducks and other water birds, great blue herons,
muskrats and beavers.

Glacially carved kettle-hole lakes are bordered
by a wetland fen system. In secluded areas,
sandhill cranes have established nests.
There are rolling meadows and surrounding
uplands covered in an oak, hickory and red
maple forest. In spring, a profusion of wildflowers,
including white trillium, carpet deep ravines near
hundred-year-old log buildings — one now used for
ACRES events and another as the caretaker’s residence.

Beneath the swamp forest of red maple,
red elm, pin oak, swamp white oak and
bigtooth aspen is the peat of a centuries-old
bog. Tamaracks probably once dominated
the forest, and some are still present. There
are stands of cinnamon and royal fern with
fronds as tall as six feet, as well as swamp dewberry
and highbush blueberry. Many of the nesting birds
are elusive denizens of wetlands.

Preserving Natural Areas Since 1960
WABASH COUNTY
Wabash County has five physiographic divisions: upland till plains, moraines,
outwash terraces, limestone terraces and bottom lands. The relief ranges from
flat plains to gently rolling areas in the eastern part, with knobs, ridges and
kettle lakes north of the Eel River. The Eel River drains the northern parts of
the county; the Wabash River, the central areas; and the Mississinewa River,
the southern portions.

One of our smaller preserves, Hanging Rock contains
a portion of a Silurian coral reef formed when Indiana
and much of the Midwest was covered by a warm,
shallow sea. When the Wabash River undercut the
rock, the top of the rock was left overhanging its base,
65 feet above the Wabash Valley — thus the preserve’s
name. Native Americans used Hanging Rock as both
an overlook and a landmark.

This preserve provides a great example of an
oak/hickory forest being converted into a
beech/maple forest. The understory is native and
diverse, and the property contains ephemeral
wetlands that provide amphibian habitat and
breeding areas. Even though the preserve is
relatively small, wildlife is abundant.

Here along the Wabash River are sycamore,
hackberry, burr and red oak trees that have
stood along the river since Native Americans
and early explorers paddled down the river.
On the bluffs are sugar and black maple trees
and red elms. In spring, there are warblers
and other migrating birds in the trees. In summer,
there are nesting birds such as the wood thrush and
red-eyed vireo. Woodland wildflowers, including
shooting star and wild hyacinth, decorate the
woodland floor in season.

This is a forest oasis with a stand of mature
red and white oak, hickory, cherry, beech
and maple trees surrounded by cultivated
fields. More trees have been planted on six
adjacent acres to enlarge this oasis. A small
stream, which dries up during periods of drought,
winds through the forest, and several species of
salamander live here. Bloodroot, squirrel corn, spring
beauty, wild phlox, Dutchman’s breeches and many
other wildflowers grow abundantly beneath the trees.

WHITLEY COUNTY
The Eel River divides the county into two major physiographic regions and
functions to drain two-thirds of the county. North of the river, the landscape
is generally characterized by rolling to steep hills on moraines, with deep
depressions between the moraines. South of the river, the landscape
features nearly level glacial till plains and low moraines.

Wildflowers
140
Wild Bergamot Monarda fistulosa
Bloom time: July
Spiderwort Tradescantia virginiana
Bloom time: May – September
Bergamot’s showy masses of lavender flowers are
attractive to a wide range of pollinators, including
hummingbirds and insects. A member of the mint
family, wild bergamot has square stems and leaves
in pairs opposite each other. The crushed leaves and
flowers have a distinctive citrus odor.
The three-petalled lavender-to-purple flowers and the
strap-like leaves are distinctive characteristics of the
spiderwort. The three common spiderwort species
in this region are the Ohio, Virginia and broad-leaf
spiderwort. Close study of the flowers has shown that
they arise from a pair of leaves that are fused to make
a boat-like structure.
Black-eyed Susan Rudbeckia hirta
Bloom time: June – August
Trillium Trillium grandiflorum
Bloom time: March – May
What seems to be a single large flower is actually
a head composed of two different types of small
flowers, or florets. The florets in the center of the head
are tiny and brown. They form seeds and are arranged
on a cone-shaped bulge in the center of the head.
The florets around the outside of the head are
non-reproductive and have large, showy petals that
serve as advertising to attract pollinators.
The showy flowers of trillium mark the progress of
spring in our local woodlands. Its large flowers with
three sepals and three petals above a whorl of three
large leaves make it easy to recognize. There are
many trillium species within ACRES preserves,
including prairie, sessile, red, large-flowered,
drooping and snow trillium.
Yarrow Achillea millefolium
Bloom time: May – September or later
Blue Phlox Phlox divaricata
Bloom time: April – May
Yarrow, like black-eyed Susan, has florets arranged in
heads. However, yarrow’s ray flowers have much shorter
petals, and the small white heads are arranged into
flat-topped clusters reminiscent of Queen Anne’s lace.
Yarrow leaves are highly divided, and when crushed,
have a unique smoky, medicinal scent.
Blue phlox can be identified by flowers with five petals
that are slightly notched at the tips. The flowers are
supported by a stem with opposite leaves. It often
grows in large masses, and although the petals typically
are blue, many populations have flowers that range
from white to purple, with all the intermediate colors.
Dutchman’s Breeches Dicentra cucullaria
Bloom time: April – May
Jack-in-the-Pulpit Arisaema triphyllum
Bloom time: April – May
This plant occurs in colonies in forests on moist, rich
soil. The shape of the paired flower petals reminds
people of little white Dutch-boy-style pants, leading
to the common name. The leaves are also striking.
They display a bluish-green color and are divided
into many tiny leaflets.
The flower-bearing structure and three-parted leaves
make Jack-in-the-pulpit easy to identify. Also known
as Indian turnip, this plant’s below-ground stem was
used as a food source by some Native Americans,
but it cannot be used without processing. A related
species, green dragon, also occurs in our area.

Trees
American Beech Fagus grandifolia
Sugar Maple Acer saccharum
The beech tree is easy to identify from its smooth
grey bark that is unfortunately often marred by initials
or other carvings. The buds are also distinctive due
to their slender, sharp-pointed shape, often one inch
in length. Edible nuts mature in October and are
contained within a four-valved spiny bur.
Sugar maple leaves are simple, opposite and not
sharply toothed. The “helicopter” fruits are U-shaped
and mature in the fall. The fall leaves are yellow,
orange or red. Sugar maple trees are well-established
in old-growth forests, due to their ability to reproduce
aggressively under forest canopies. The sap is prized
for making sugar and syrup.
American Sycamore Platanus occidentalis
The sycamore is an easy tree to identify by its
white and grey mottled bark and massive spreading
branches. The sycamore is often found in wet areas
and especially along streams and rivers.
White Oak Quercus alba
This large tree has heavy branches and leaves with
rounded lobes, distinguishing it from red and black
oaks. Acorns are produced with the cup covering
¼ of the nut. Like other oaks, the pith of twigs is
star-shaped when viewed in cross section. White oak
acorns are the preferred fall diet of many animals.
Black Walnut Juglans nigra
The inner bark of a black walnut tree is a rich
chocolate brown. Its leaves are compound and long
(often two feet), with 15 – 23 leaflets. The twigs have
a chambered pith with thin partitions, and the wood
has a beautiful dark-brown grain. Edible nuts ripen
in October.
Tulip Poplar Liriodendron tulipifera
This is Indiana’s state tree. The leaves make this
tree easy to identify. They have an unusual tulip-like
shape with four lobes. The flowers also resemble
tulips and appear in late spring. The blossoms
provide nectar for bees to make honey, and the fruits
provide food for squirrels in fall and winter.
Black Cherry Prunus serotina
Shagbark Hickory Carya ovata
The light reddish-brown wood has a beautiful smooth
grain. Twigs have a bitter almond scent and taste.
Wilted leaves and twigs contain cyanic acid, which
can be fatal to livestock if eaten in large quantities.
Fruits are clusters of juicy purple-black cherries that
are slightly bitter but eagerly consumed by wildlife.
As its name suggests, the shagbark hickory is easily
recognized by its bark. On mature trees, bark breaks
into very hard thin plates that are free from the trunk at
one or both ends, giving the tree a shaggy appearance.
It is a slow-growing tree, producing hard, tough wood.
Shagbark hickory nuts are edible and delicious.
Hackberry Celtis occidentalis
Red Maple Acer rubrum
Red maple gets its name from the red coloration of
its buds, twigs, flowers, fruits and autumn leaves. Its
leaves are simple, opposite and sharply toothed. The
“helicopter” fruits are V-shaped and mature in the
spring. Red maple is usually one of the first forest
trees to become established in old clearings and
burned areas.
142
The bark of hackberry is distinguished by warty or
corky bumps. Its leaves alternate on the twig and are
long and pointy with toothed edges. The tree crown
often has clusters of small disfigured twigs called
“witches’ brooms,” caused by mites. The edible fruits
are pea-sized and dark purple.

Tracks
Rabbit and Squirrel
Raccoon
Squirrel and rabbit tracks often appear similar. Both
squirrels and rabbits gallop when they move so that
their hind feet land in front of their forefeet. When
identifying these tracks, focus on two features. First,
rabbits place one forefoot behind the other, whereas
squirrels place their forefeet next to each other.
Second, squirrel tracks will often end at trees;
rabbit tracks will go past trees. Looking closely at
cottontail rabbit tracks, you will see four toes, with
claws occasionally showing. A close look at squirrel
tracks reveals five rear toes and four front toes.
Raccoons have five long toes on both the front and
rear feet. The toes have nails that often leave small
dots ahead of the toes on the tracks. The heel pad of
the rear foot is longer and more likely to register on
the tracks than the smaller pad of the front foot.
Rabbit
Squirrel
Skunk
Skunks have five toes on both the front and hind feet.
A distinguishing feature is the presence of long nails
on the forefeet, which leave small dots ahead of the
toe pads.
Deer
Deer tracks show two toes. Sometimes on soft
substrates, the dewclaws will also make impressions
behind the toes. The toes will point in the direction
the deer was walking.
Turkey
Opossum
Both the front and rear feet of the opossum have
five toes. A distinguishing feature of the rear track
is the clawless, opposable, thumb-like fifth toe, which
projects toward the inside of the track. It is typical to
find the rear track partially on top of the front track.
144
Wild turkey tracks consist of three long toe
marks, without webbing, spaced around a small
circular pad print. These tracks could be confused
with the great blue heron’s. Turkey tracks, however,
are smaller than the heron’s, and heron tracks have
an extra toe mark pointing backward.

Land Contribution Options
Get Involved
ACRES acquires the majority of our property through some form of
contribution. If contribution opportunities are not available, ACRES does
consider obtaining properties at market value. The most common land
contribution options are listed below.
One way to get involved with ACRES is to explore the preserves with the
help of this Preserve Guide. There are many other ways to get involved.
DONATION
Donating land for conservation purposes is truly one of the finest legacies a
person can leave. Donating land releases you from the responsibility of managing
the land and can provide substantial income tax deductions and estate tax benefits.
Land can also be donated through your will. ACRES encourages you to discuss land
donations with us to ensure we fully understand your goals for the property.
BARGAIN SALE
If you need to realize some immediate income from your land, yet would like
the property to be preserved, a bargain sale might be the answer. In a bargain
sale, you sell the land to ACRES for less than its fair market value. A bargain sale
entitles you to a charitable income tax deduction based on the difference
between the land’s fair market value and its sale price.
LIFE ESTATE
You can continue to live on the land by donating a remainder interest and
retaining a reserved life estate. In this arrangement, you would donate the
property but continue to live on and use the property. ACRES would receive full
title and control over the property upon your death, or sooner, if you so choose.
CONSERVATION EASEMENT
A conservation easement is a legal agreement between a landowner
and ACRES that permanently limits uses of the land in order to protect its
conservation values. It allows you to continue to own and use your land, and
to sell it or pass it on to heirs. Donated conservation easements can qualify
as tax-deductible charitable donations.
Please contact the ACRES office to further explore any of the contribution
options, or to set a time for us to visit your property. ACRES is a non-profit
organization, and donations are tax deductible as allowed by law. Consult
with your legal and financial advisors to determine specifically how the
options listed here will impact your tax and/or estate circumstances.
148
VOLUNTEER
ACRES is able to keep expenses
low because of the generous
support of hundreds of volunteers.
Volunteers provide a variety of
services for ACRES, including
preserve maintenance, professional
advice and services, staffing
information booths, educational
programs, nature photography,
website maintenance, helping with
special events, assisting at the
office, distribution of the Quarterly
and many other tasks and services.
Contact the ACRES office to explore
how your skills and interests can help
ACRES expand our ability to preserve
natural areas.
BECOME A MEMBER
ACRES offers affordable memberships to individuals, families, seniors, students
and corporations. Membership gives you a subscription to the Quarterly, notices of
ACRES events, the right to vote and attend the annual members’ meeting and the
satisfaction of being a part of local land preservation. Contact ACRES to join today!
DONATE
ACRES receives the majority of our income
from private donations. Donations are made
through a variety of ways, including cash
donations, matching gifts from employers,
stock donations, the naming of ACRES as
the beneficiary of life insurance policies or
charitable remainder trusts, the donation of
products or services, the naming of ACRES
in wills and a variety of other means. Please
consider a donation to ACRES as you plan
your charitable giving.
