PROUD to be a
Proud
to be a Sabre
There's much to be proud of in the
Schalmont Central School District
where we constantly strive to
meet state standards for academic
performance. Students also have access
to a variety of extracurricular programs
that expand the learning experience
beyond the classroom and offer
unique, creative outlets for expression.
Schalmont produces scholar-athlete
teams, accomplished artists, awardwinning musicians and civic-minded
youth, who volunteer their time to help
community members in need. In return,
Schalmont has enjoyed the support of
active, involved parents, businesses and
residents, who have been instrumental
in developing and maintaining a strong
instructional program.
"I am very fortunate to work with wonderful children
and be a member of a community that appreciates the
efforts of educators.”
—Jason Thompson, Assistant Principal,
Jefferson Elementary School

Participation in school sports teaches
students some of life’s most valuable
lessons, such as learning how to dig
deep to give your best for the team,
overcoming obstacles, and showing
grace in the face of both victory and
defeat. Accordingly, the district offers
students opportunities to participate
in more than 18 sports across three
seasons.

Schalmont has outstanding programs
in music and the arts — evidenced by
the strong participation of students
and the support these programs get
from the wider community. Whether
it's Schalmont's student musicians, the
annual art shows or our student drama
clubs that perform to packed audiences
each year, there is much to be proud of at
Schalmont when it comes to music and
the arts.

PROUD to be a
Pride in the
community
Students make a positive difference
in the community, region and world
by raising money and awareness for
dozens of causes. The holiday season
is a particularly special time of year
when students, teachers and staff come
together to raise spirits and help friends
and neighbors with school-sponsored
giving trees, food drives, toy and clothing
collections, caroling and so much more.
Schalmont spreads holiday
cheer in the community
•
For more than 35 years, Schalmont
has hosted a special "Lunch with
Santa" event that brings together
friends, neighbors, grandparents and
others in the community. The event is
held at Jefferson, in conjunction with
the school PTO's craft fair, and allows
children to deliver their wish lists in
"Schalmont is a tight-knit community where everyone
cares about each other."

PROUD to be a
Pride using
technology to
teach and learn
Just as organizations and businesses
around the world have searched for and
found ways to use technology to their
advantage, Schalmont teachers and
administrators now have greater access to
wireless technology, interactive projectors,
software and electronic devices to improve
education outcomes and the educational
experience for our students.
Technology highlights
•
The Class of 2019 will be the first
incoming freshman class to receive
Chromebooks they will keep for the
duration of their high school careers.
•
Teachers have district-provided laptops
along with professional development
opportunities focused on using
instructional technology.
•
With the adoption of a new “Bring Your
Own Device” (BYOD) policy, high school
students now have the opportunity to
begin using their favorite technologies at
school. The initiative will be rolled out to
other school buildings in the future.

PROUD to be a

building a
community of
respect
Students districtwide, along with faculty
and staff, have been working diligently
for the past two years to create a culture
of respect in Schalmont schools. In
fact, a group of middle school and high
school students were recognized by
the Schenectady County Human Rights
Commission last spring for their work to
bring diversity and a positive environment
to their schools. Posters, videos,
discussions, assemblies and recognition
programs are among the many activities
designed collaboratively to achieve their
goal.
"There's a great sense of teamwork, school pride and community in
the air. Everyone has a smile on their face and bends over backward to lend a helping hand."

PROUD to be a
Pride in our
families'
support
Schalmont welcomes parents as volunteer
partners in our schools. We're fortunate
to have the support of several parent
groups. One shining example from the
past school year is the work of volunteers
on a subcommittee of the middle school
PTO. The group spent months planning
the eighth grade dance, ultimately
transforming the school gym into a scene
from New York City and creating a magical
night "under the stars" for the first fifth
grade class to walk the halls at Schalmont
Middle School.
District parent groups
"The staff, parents and children of Schalmont are
tremendous people."

PROUD to be a
Pride in our
students'
futures
The majority of students in the Class of
2015 planned to attend a two- or fouryear college after graduation. Many
students even received academic or
athletic scholarships. This was not done
alone but in collaboration with students'
families and all of the teachers, coaches,
administrators and support staff they
encountered over the years, who helped
them grow into well-rounded students.
No matter where graduates decide to go
in their futures, we hope they remember
what shaped their yesterdays.

learning
Researchers say children may lose two
months of reading achievement, on
average, during the summer, and teachers
can spend a month of instructional time
re-teaching what has been lost before
moving on to something new. To help
students stay active, both mentally and
physically, while on summer vacation,
Schalmont offers a variety of academic
and non-academic programs.

School attendance matters
Daily attendance is one of the most important factors in whether or not a student
will succeed in school. Students today are faced with unprecedented changes
within the field of public education so it's essential they are present to receive the
instruction they need to meet or exceed those standards. If a student is going to
be absent or tardy, parents are expected to contact the child's school directly the
morning of the absence.
