Celebrate Carnival in Holland…
www.holland.com!
March 2, 2014 - March 4, 2014 !
In Holland, carnival is a holiday mainly celebrated in the south of the
country. The provinces Limburg and Noord-Brabant are the
predominantly Catholic provinces of the Netherlands, where most
inhabitants celebrate Carnival. Though some people take the Carnival
traditions very seriously, most people keep it simple and just drink, sing
and dance wearing a colorful outfit.

Dutch Carnival Traditions !
The Carnival celebrations start after the mayor symbolically hands over
the key to the city to Prince Carnival. For three days, the Carnival Prince
has control of the city and, together with his subjects, celebrates the
temporary establishment of their Kingdom of Fools. Merrymakers make
their way from pub to pub and greet Prince Carnival with three cheers of
“Alaaf”. !
Carnival Celebrations !
If you can drink, sing and dance wearing a colorful outfit you’re more
than welcome to celebrate Carnival in Holland! Make sure you wear a
crazy Carnival costume and you’ll blend in perfectly.

EDIT OR IAL

!Dear readers:!
!
! have been enjoying some balmy temperatures in January, quite a change from the harsh winter cold

before.
But there still is a lot of snow and winter’s not over yet. The Dutch community is looking forward the
the Silver Skate Festival, a wonderful outdoors event with skating, snow sculptures, sleigh rides, food and

many other fun events. Be sure to come and say hello in Snackbar Holland and enjoy the pea soup,
!
croquettes and hot chocolate.!
!
Another event coming up is the Touch of Dutch at the Muttart with a pyramid filled with thousands of
colourful tulips, daffodils and hyacinths that brings the Netherlands to Edmonton. As you walk through the !
bloom-filled pyramid, you may feel as if you’ve been transported to the “Keukenhof”, and you’ll know that
spring has arrived. You don’t want to miss this.!
Lisa and I will be taking a few weeks off in February, so the March issue of the Dutch Touch will be
published a little bit later than usual and you can expect it after the first week of March. In the meantime,
stay safe and warm.!

WINDMILLS!
It’s true! I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart. Not true after all, I forgot to thank
Jack Toering for his donation of two drawings for our Christmas dinner draw and Trudy Moulyn for her
donation of a runner. My apologies!!
!How great is February? The month is full of fun opportunities to share with the people we love and
cherish. It also presents the perfect opportunity for starting new traditions. The name February is derived
from the Latin februa, signifying the festivals of purification.!
!Don’t forget the Silver Skate Festival February 14-23, 2014, at Hawrelak Park. The festival is rooted in the
Dutch tradition of a love of the outdoors and the pleasure of experiencing the cultural and aesthetic beauty
of winter (ha, ha.) In recent years, the festival has exploded into an extravaganza of art, culture, recreation
and sports programming. See you all there?!
!2014 is the Year of the Horse. A life-sized terracotta horse and warrior are the heart of the Lunar New Year
feature pyramid at the Muttart Conservatory, January 11 to March 2, if anyone is interested.!
!Please mark on your calendar our upcoming activities:!
February 13, 2014 Valentine’s Day (wear something red that day)!
March 13, 2014 St. Patrick’s Day!
April 17, 2014 Easter Lunch!
May 1, 2014 Orange Day!

!
!Our thoughts are with our members who are battling an illness. A hundred hearts would be too few, to
carry all the love sent to you from us.!
!A huge thank you to all our January volunteers. I feel a very unusual sensation – if it is not indigestion, I
think it must be gratitude.!
!Here’s to working together to build a better Club!!
Only a few Birthdays in February, so “Here’s to another year of Experience.” Happy Birthday.!

CARD MAKING CLUB!
Our ladies were happy to be back for card making and are looking
forward to the new winter/spring season. It sure feels like spring
today, so enjoy it! !
!
Our card making days are January 25, Feb 8 and March 1. The 15th
and 22nd of February are not available because of the Silver Skate
Festival. I hope to see you all there and if you have time, come out to
the club and volunteer for the silver skate. It is a lot of work for Riek

Thank you.!

SEWING AND CRAFT CIRCLE!
Our sewing & craft circle is going to be a bit small during February because Hillie and Lisa will be gone for
a few weeks, Pauline has been missing in action for weeks already (but we know she’s
enjoying some sunshine in Arizona, and I’ll be gone all through February. So Edith
will decide if there are enough ladies to get together. If you are planning to
come, please phone her first (780-489-8404) to make sure she’s going to be
at the Club on Tuesdays. !
But there is a lot of work to be done. We have agreed to make covers for
the outside market stall tables. The sewing club has ordered the red, white
and blue fabric and as soon as it arrives we’ll get started on it. If you are
interested in helping out, we would certainly appreciate some help.
We have a few extra sewing machines and sergers but you can also
bring your own. !
We meet on Tuesdays from about 10:00 am until about 3:00 pm
(please bring your own lunch).!

February 14-23, 2014
The Silver Skate Festival & Winter Celebration is a free event
for all of Edmonton to enjoy.!
Entering its twenty-fourth year, the Silver Skate Festival is the longest running winter festival in the City of
Edmonton. Still rooted in Dutch traditions, in recent years the festival has become an extravaganza of art,
culture, recreation and sports programming in William Hawrelak Park. This is no small feat and would not
be possible without the support of our partners and contributors. !
Our 24th annual edition of the festival will be a little different. The pond in Hawrelak Park is closed due to
construction in preparation for the ITU international triathlon proudly hosted by the City of Edmonton in the
summer of 2014. The good news is that an 8000 sq. metre temporary ice rink in the southeast corner of
the park has been created for public skating.!
This year's sporting events will be hosted at Hawrelak Park and at our satellite site, the Victoria Oval.
Marathon skate races and the Kortebaan, a traditional Dutch long blade sprint race will be held at the
Victoria Oval on River Valley Road while the Edmonton Winter Triathlon will take place in Hawrelak Park.!
Festival Programming will include an expanded program of free events and activities to include even more
recreational activities, snow sculpting, roving performers, horse drawn sleigh rides, our international snow
sculpture symposium, Live Performers in the Parks, four evenings of the Silver Skate Folk Trail with fire
sculpture installations, and our Heritage Village.!
Attendance!
Over 60,000 people enjoyed the Festival in 2013 and the Silver Skate Festival has become the premier
winter festival in the greater Edmonton area. We anticipate even more festival goers in 2014.!

SILVER SKATE FESTIVAL - February 14-23, 2014!
The City of Edmonton has made some changes to Hawrelak Park this year, because of the upcoming
triathlon this summer. The water from the pond has been removed and a new a skating area South of the
Amphitheater has been created. Our kitchen will be very close to the new ice surface. The skating races
will be held at the Victoria Park Oval location.!
In an effort to keep current, we are trying something new. We are happy to announce the addition of a
Beer Garden. The operation is the sole responsibility of the DCC, and 100% of the profits go to us as well.
This undertaking will require some extra volunteers, so if you have a great attitude and would like to try
something different, please contact Emmy or Cees via email. Positions include bartenders as well as
monitors, shifts will depend on festival activities.!
This year Silver Skate starts on Friday February 14 at 5:00 pm. Fresh FM is holding a Skating Party, the
kitchen will be open during this event.!
Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 - the kitchen is open from 12:00 till 8:00 pm. In the evening of both days there
will be a fire sculpture burn at 7:45 which is quite nice to see.!
Monday 17, Family Day - the kitchen is open from 12:00 till 4:00 pm !
Friday 21 - the kitchen will be open at 5:00 pm!
Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 - the kitchen is open from 12:00 till 5:00 pm in the evening of both days.
Again there will be a sculpture burn at 7:45. !
Sunday 23 - A clean-up crew is needed at 5:00 pm!
We thank those who in the past have made Silver Skate such a success. It is a lot of hard work! This year
we will need more volunteers than ever and we hope that you can help us! For the DCC Kitchen there is a
sign up sheet in the Clubroom (Flying Dutchman Lounge) or you can call Riek at 780-464-4879 or Pat at
780-469-8343.!
To help with the Beer Garden please contact Emmy at [email protected] or Cees at [email protected] !
Thank you very much and we hope to see you there. !
Kleintje Pils naar Olympische Spelen Sotsji!
!
massaal verwachte internationale publiek.!
!
Muzikale ambassadeurs!

A Touch of Dutch at the
National Flag of
Canada Day in
Canada!
Muttart !
On Sunday March 9, 2014
from 12:00 noon - 4:00 pm
we need volunteers, dressed
in traditional or “fun” Dutch
costumes to be Dutch ambassadors at the
Muttart Conservatory for the “Touch of
Dutch”, featuring tulips and Dutch displays. !
We also need Dutch entertainment for March
9, 2014 and some large decor items for
display from March 8 until April 6, 2014.!
The national flag of
Canada was inaugurated
on February 15, 1965.
The anniversary of this date is officially called the
"National Flag of Canada Day", which is often
shortened to "Flag Day”. On that day the
Canadian national flag, also known as the
"maple leaf flag", is flown on many buildings,
including private homes. Some people wear pins
in the form of the flag. Many schools often hold
special lessons on the Canadian national flag
and its history around this time of the year. Flag
Day is not a statutory holiday in Canada.
Schools, organizations, businesses and stores
are open and public transport services run to
their normal timetables. There has been a
movement to make Flag Day a national statutory
holiday recently.

A TOUCH OF DUTCH FEATURE PYRAMID!
!
The DCC is honoured to have been asked back to the Muttart Conservatory for their spring feature
pyramid. We have accepted the challenge and the planning committee is working diligently with the event
coordinators to make this a beautiful cultural event that will showcase the DCC and our proud heritage.!
While the final details are still being hammered out - here is what we know so far:!
• DATE - the date of the pyramid will run from March 8th to April 6th, however our "day" at the event will be
Sunday, March 9th from 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm!
• WHAT - we are working with the organizers to be allowed to open a scaled down version of our famous
"SNOEP WINKEL". We have also been asked for a cultural display as well as permanent elements
inside the pyramid (oversized wooden shoes, wooden windmills, and various decor items).!
• ENTERTAINMENT - this would be for the 9th of March only during the "event".!
• We will also be providing simple food sampling such as Herring, Dutch Cheese, and sweets. We will not
have access to cooking, so food is limited to "sampling" only and a budget is being provided by Muttart
to cover the food costs.!
WHAT CAN YOU DO?!
We will require ladies and gentleman to volunteer during the event. We would encourage that our
volunteers dress as "Dutch" as possible, if you don't have a formal traditional costume, we would welcome
you in your "fun" Dutch Duds!!
We are in need of large decor pieces for the duration of the feature pyramid - in particular wooden garden
windmills but we welcome all donations. These pieces will be returned to you at the completion of the
pyramid.!
We welcome volunteers and suggestions in regards to entertainment.!
This is a great event for us to participate in and we are fortunate to be able to showcase our facility and
heritage at such a large event funded by the City of Edmonton. So if you would like to join us or can help
in any way, please contact Emmy Diamond at [email protected]!

Update from the Netherlands Trade Office!
!
The Netherlands Trade Office assists in generating opportunities for
Dutch businesses in Alberta. As of 2008, the Trade Office has been
successful in creating many business opportunities for companies in a
variety of sectors (e.g., bio energy, agriculture, water management,
environment, food market, and infrastructure) and expects to see
continued success, both within these sectors and in new areas of
business. We support Dutch companies in doing business in Alberta by
setting up meetings with businesses, government and other types of
organizations. We set up trade fairs, incoming and outgoing (trade)
missions, and projects that are a result of follow-ups from the trade
missions. !

Increasing workload!
The Netherlands, being a pioneer in water management and water technologies can be of great
assistance in the work done after the southern Alberta flood of June 2013. Various Dutch companies have
visited Alberta with regard to water technology and management in the past months. !
!
In October, Royal HaskoningDHV, an independent, international engineering and project management
consultancy company, met with the provincial Flood Task Force to discuss the Dutch ‘Room for the River’
project. A representative of Partners in International Business (PIB) visited Alberta in November to explore
opportunities in waste water treatment. Furthermore, Deltares, an independent, institute for applied
research in the field of water, subsurface and infrastructure visited Alberta in December. Throughout the
world, Deltares works on smart solutions, innovations and applications for people, environment and
society. The main objective of this mission was to look at possibilities for collaboration in the water sector,
including expertise for flood prevention. !
!
Further attention to the flood will be paid during a three-day- workshop that is organized by Alberta
Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions (AIEES) and the Netherlands Trade Office on February
18-20, 2014. This workshop is intended to explore and evaluate best practices and leading technologies
that may be relevant to long-term mitigation of economic, social and environmental costs/impacts related
to extreme weather events, in particular flooding and drought. !
!
In addition to these flood-related activities, other missions have taken place over the past few months. Coowner of the companies Biotrack and Salttech, Gerard Schouten came on a mission from the Netherlands
in January. He attended several meetings in Edmonton and Calgary. The purpose of his visit in Alberta
was to look for potential buyers for the technologies of these companies. Biotrack’s technology is used for
the detection of bacteria and Salttech’s technology does desalination of water. Consul-General Johannes
Vervloed (Vancouver) visited Alberta to meet with Ministers to stimulate the cooperation between Alberta
and the Netherlands. !
!
New interns!
The increasing workload resulted in the expansion of our team by introducing new interns. January was
the last month of Jessica Aguilar Diaz, who has been closely involved with various projects over the past
six months. Aireen Nusrat started her internship in December and is currently working on a health care
project, comparing policies in Alberta and the Netherlands. Martijn Groen, who was previously working
with the Netherlands Trade Office as an intern, has returned to Alberta and will be volunteering for the
Netherlands Trade Office for the next few months. !
!
If you are or know a Dutch business or organization interested to do business in Alberta, please send an
e-mail to [email protected]. For more information you can view our website: www.albertaholland.com.!

De Tulp !
!
Van Turkse tulband naar Amsterdams grachtenpand. !

Older job hunters say they face age
discrimination, race also an issue!
Friday 24 January 2014!
Between 20% and 40% of foreigners in the
Netherlands say they have faced
discrimination in their hunt for a job,
depending on their ethnic background,
according to a new report by the
government’s socio-cultural think-tank
SCP. In total, 25% of the population of the
Netherlands as a whole said they have
faced discrimination of some sort in the
past 12 months. The report, drawn up for
the social affairs ministry, shows that age
discrimination is the most common form of
discrimination in the Netherlands and has
been experienced by 10% of the 12,500
people who took part in the survey.!
In particular, nearly four out of 10 job
hunters aged 55 to 64 said they have lost
out on a job because of their age. One in
four people aged 45 to 54 made the same
claim. Discrimination on the grounds of
ethnic origin has been experienced by 8%
of those polled over the previous year. In
particular, one in three students of Turkish
and one in four of Moroccan heritage said
their ethnicity made it more difficult to find
a work-experience place. And 15% of
workers from central or eastern Europe
said they were paid less than their Dutch
colleagues. A quarter of gay men and
women said they had experienced some
form of discrimination in public places over
the past year.!

Wadden Sea islands oppose offshore
wind farm plan!
Friday 24 January 2014!
The five Wadden Sea islands have come
out against plans to build a giant wind farm
to the north of Ameland and
Schiermonnikoog and have called on the
economic affairs minister to rethink the
idea. The energy agreement signed by the
national and provincial governments
envisages the development of several
massive offshore wind farms in order to
meet green energy targets.!
One location earmarked by the minister is
a site some six kilometres off the islands’
northerly coasts. The island council
disagrees, saying the massive
development is ‘not responsible’ given the
greater social importance of the Wadden
Sea area as a top tourist attraction. They also say the plan threatens shipping,
bird migration and the region’s status as a
Unesco world heritage site.!
