Message from
The Governor General
Good evening scholar athletes, parents, teachers, coaches, family
and friends, corporate and individual sponsors, members of The
Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations, ladies and gentlemen.
The success the Bahamian Track and Field teams around the
world has made Bahamians, residents, and me extremely proud
this year. It is indeed a singular opportunity for me to be here
on this occasion to congratulate those Track and Field athletes
who have conquered the world as well as their lessons.
In order for a student athlete to succeed it is most important
for them to have good coaching, the brawn as well as the brain.
Balance is most important.
I am happy that we have a significant increase of persons who made the scholar athlete list
this year. It demonstrates that the program has had an effect in encouraging our athletes to
improve on their scholastics.
It is indeed quite important that we publicize these scholar athletes. Of the over twelve hundred
students who participated in the Scotiabank National High School Track and Field Championships, only nineteen (14 males & 5 females) have met the athletic criteria set by the Federation
and have made the minimum grade point average of 2.50 to qualify as All Bahamian Scholar
Athletes. This has improved from 12 last year more than a fifty percent improvement, which
is certainly encouraging.
Please allow me to congratulate those World Junior and Youth Champions amongst you, Shaunae Miller, Latario Collie - Minns and Stephen Newbold.
Each of you has stuck to your books while honing your craft.
In noting that there are numerous former athletes who have excelled in their professions after
putting down their spikes, I must note that the project manager of the new Thomas Robinson
National Stadium was Architect Iram Lewis, a former national sprinter.
But I wish to say to all of the honorees, you are yet in the early stages of your athletic careers.
Some of you have graduated this year and others will in 2012. More than likely the majority of
you have been approached or have already been granted athletic scholarships to colleges and
universities in the United States. You will only be able to continue your athletic careers if you
maintain the academic requirements of the institutions who have high expectations of you. I
am certain some of you are aware of former students who lost opportunities to receive higher
education because of poor academic performances having been dismissed from the schools
and returned home. The Bahamas is in need of bright, technically sound Bahamians to return
and contribute to national development in many areas.
I urge each and every one of you to continue your quest for success in all areas of life.
H.E. Sir Arthur Foulkes

Message from
The Minister of Education
I extend heartfelt congratulations to the nineteen young men
and women who have been dubbed, our “All Bahamian Scholar
Athletes.” You are shining examples for your peers of what
can be accomplished if one is willing to work diligently and to
persevere, despite distractions. I therefore, am happy to support any initiative that rewards you for your positive contributions to our society.
Nineteen of you are being recognized at this Athletes’ Awards
Reception for having met a minimum academic standard of
a 2.50 grade point average (GPA), and having excelled as junior track athletes. This is no easy feat. You applied yourselves
and found a way to rise to the challenge, which is most
commendable.
It is wonderful to note that our athlete awardees hail not only from New Providence, but attend schools from Abaco, Eleuthera, Grand Bahama and the United States as well. This
demonstrates that we are a people who are full of untapped potential and that we have the
ability to compete and to meet the highest world standards in track and field.
I applaud the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations for their untiring dedication in
the development of our youth and sports in The Bahamas. It is encouraging to know that as
our more senior athletes leave the scene that we have a crop of strong, focused and intelligent
junior athletes to whom they are able to pass to the baton and who are quite capable of taking
the sport and our nation to the next level.
Awardees, I am proud of you your many accomplishments. I thank, your parents and coaches
also, whose continuous support of your dreams played an important role in helping you to
find success. My wish, awardees, is that you always give your best effort in all your endeavours,
and that you continue to find a balance between your academic studies and athletic pursuits.
If you remember to transfer the discipline that you have developed to other areas of your
lives you can only meet with more success in the future.
Congratulations once again, and best wishes for the future.
The Honourable T. Desmond Bannister, M.P.

Message from
The President of
The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations
Within the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA),
the governing body of Collegiate Athletics in the United States,
the terms “student” and “athlete” are synonymous. This is because the NCAA recognizes that an overwhelming majority of
student-athletes will never earn a living as professional athletes.
It is also recognized that when the athlete can no longer compete, the student can still succeed. Hence great emphasis is
placed on maintaining a minimum grade point average (GPA).
The Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA)
fully subscribes to this philosophy. That is why the All Bahamian Scholar Award has become a yearly fixture on our
calendar.
Members of our coaching fraternity recognizing the need to create a ‘balancing act’ between
academics and athletics recommended the formation of the Parents Association of Track
and Field with the express purpose of bridging the gap between the academic and athletic
performance so as to ensure that our athletes meet the requirements to further their education
through sports and in particular Track and Field.
The success of the program is well documented with more than $20million in scholarships
being awarded to our student-athletes over the past decade. If this trend is to continue, as I
expect it would, it is imperative that we, the Administrators of our beloved sport continue
to encourage and reward those student-athletes for their performances in the classroom. The
Parents Association is to be congratulated for their efforts in maintaining this vision.
This evening, it gives me great pleasure to recognize and congratulate those student-athletes
who along with their athletic achievements have also achieved the minimum requirement of
a 2.50GPA thus allowing you to be recognized as an All Bahamian Scholar Athlete.
Your accomplishment is a testament to your Discipline, Dedication, Determination and Desire to achieve great things for yourselves. It is also a testament to the support that you have
received from your coaches, family members and friends. All of whom are no doubt as
equally proud as those of us in the BAAA family.
Best wishes for success in all your future endeavours.
Mike Sands

Honourary All Bahamian Scholar Recipient
DR. TIMOTHY BARRETT
Dr. Barrett is a Bahamian who has been practicing medicine for
the past 37 years. He is a trained psychiatrist and currently holds
the position of Director of Community Mental Health Services
for the Public Hospitals Authority. He is a Clinical Tutor in Psychiatry for the School of Clinical Medicine and Research, Bahamas. Additionally he is in private practice and is Managing
Director of Psychological Associates Limited (PAL), a company which provides not only psychiatric services but also
Employee Assistance Programs and Training especially in the
area of human resource development.
His early education was at Eastern Junior School and The
Government High School. He was head boy of that school
in 1965. His athletic ability and love of sports led to his
achieving the first gold medal in the history of the Bahamas
in a field event when he won the triple jump in the Central American and
Caribbean Games, 1966. He went on to the University of Southern California where he contributed to their national championship in track and field in 1968. He was an All-American
in that same year. He is the first Bahamian to medal in the Central American and Caribbean
Track Championships winning the bronze medal in 1975.
He has involved himself in many civic and sporting organizations in the Bahamas being a
past president of the New Providence Volleyball Association, the Bahamas Sickle-Cell Association, a member of the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled, vice president
of the Bahamas Lawn Tennis Association and an executive member of the Bahamas Amateur
Athletic Association. Currently he is President of the Medical Association of The Bahamas
and a member of the Medical Council of The Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
He is frequently used as a resource for lectures and seminars in Managing Stress, Conflict
Resolution, Time Management, Emotional Management, Leadership Development and Team
Building and Maintenance etc. and has been the visiting lecturer for the Masters Degree program for the University of the West Indies School of Business (Cave Hill, Barbados). Additionally, he has provided services for regional banks and government organizations
throughout the Caribbean.
He is keenly interested in the development of human beings to their highest capacity and is
passionate about the effective use of that limited and shrinking resource - time.
Having been ordained to the Sacred Gospel Ministry, he is very active in church ministry at
Kemp Road Ministries where he is an Associate Pastor and is responsible for marriage preparation and counseling along with leadership training. He is married to the former Samantha
Adderley and has four children Timothy Jr., Marc, Torriano and Joelle.
His areas of interest are music [singing – he recently became the first Bahamian to achieve
the LTCL in recital, bass], listening to jazz, squash, traveling and visiting museums. Most recently he became a member of the Bahamas National Symphony Orchestra where he plays
the bass clarinet.

Honourary All Bahamian Scholar Recipient
MRS. EUGENIA GREEN-ELLIS
I am grateful for being selected as one of this year’s Honorary
All Bahamian Scholar Athletes. My track career started at Oakes
Field Primary School and continued as I moved to H.O. Nash
Junior High School. It was at that time when my Social Studies
Teacher, Mr. Wayne Symonette (deceased) and my Physical Education Teachers Ms. Gloria Gomez and Ms. Linda Knowles
noticed my potentials. I attended Government High School
and after graduation, I was even more determined to pursue a
track career; I then began training with Coaches Walter Calendar (deceased), Ronald Cartwright and Frank (Pancho) Rahming, of the Pioneers Track Club. I thank my Coaches for the
training and guidance they had given me during my short but
very successful career.
During my stint as a track athlete, I made several national teams, including Carifta 1976 which
was held here in The Bahamas for the first time; where I ran the 400m and got the silver
medal. Again in 1976, I represented the Bahamas at the Junior CAC Games held in Mexico
and won a gold medal in the 400m. With these major successes my career began to blossom.
In 1977 once again I represented the Bahamas on the Carifta Team, this time in Barbados;
however disappointingly my athletic career was abruptly halted due to injuries.
Determined not to allow injuries to deter my athletic goals, I furthered my knowledge by
studying fitness at a fitness institute in Florida; this would allow me to still work with athletes.
I continued my education by studying Massage Therapy at the Thalasso Institute and Russian
Sport Science of Massage in Fort Meyers, Florida where I received a Certificate in Massage
Therapy. I massage the majority of the now junior athletes that do well in track and field including my two children who are active participants in the sport. I truly enjoy my profession,
and it makes me extremely happy to be able to give back to the future Olympians of this
country.

Proposed Program
By: Corrington maycock
March 2011
no Kids left Behind
In the past we have seen potential super stars surface in the eyes of Track & Field at the primary
and junior school level. After the High School Championships and Primary School Championships these student athletes vanish never to be seen or heard from again. Very few remain in
the system and later excel to make junior international teams or establish a scholarship to university or college.
No Kids Left Behind was designed to recognize and locate student athletes in Track & Field with
inner city backgrounds to help further their career. Concentration will be placed on athletes
under the age of 16 that needs to be directed in the hope of sustaining yearly competition and
training. We want to eliminate student athletes not knowing their talent and how much better
they can become with such an opportunity.
We hope to enter into schools during physical education classes, at house meets and at championship meets to scout potential athletes. After evaluation, names will be placed in categories for
specialty events and club placement. Only registered clubs of the Bahamas Association of Athletic
Association will receive names of athletes and their specialty.
All potential student athletes will receive a certified letter from the B.A.A.A’s. This letter will be
addressed to the parent(s) or guardian of the student breaking down their child’s ability and the
details of this program. We will urge parents to make it possible no matter what to have their student athlete register and remain in the program.
We will also go into their school and speak to teachers and guidance counselors for a history on
the individual. We will then determine what needs to be done to keep this individual in our system and make it possible to have them succeed on the track and in the classroom.
A program of this magnitude must be financed by a corporate sponsor or funded through a Government Grant. We do not have a school system like Jamaica or other top Caribbean countries
that develop athletes in their program. We run a club system that does well but can do 100% better through numbers and talent. Having numbers will introduce a better pooling system for international teams at the junior level and more professional athletes in the near future. We will also
better the lives of many more kids through scholarship opportunities.
We have a team in place who is willing to make this happen and clubs willing to benefit through
this recognition and development program. We need the financial means to get started and save
many young talented athletic individuals in our Bahamas.

Why All Bahamian
In 2007, Kermit Taylor, then Public relations director of the
Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations assembled a PR
committee in order to make more versatile, the office that he
held. To make this idea possible, he emphasized marketing and
planning and two key ingredients. Seven professionals were then
contacted, Ms Susan Glinton, Mr. Harrison Petty, Mr.
Ainsworth Beckford, Mr. Patrick Roberts, Mr. Ed Jimenez, Mr.
Roosevelt Thompson and Dr. Dwight Marshall.
One of the things that came out of these committee meetings
was the need for this group to establish a signature event that
would highlight our junior athletes. Furthermore, this award
would be based not just on athletics, but more importantly
their academic accomplishments as well. During this period there was a
resurgence of our junior athletes on the regional as well as international stages, which made
this project even more relevant.
In one particular meeting, Dr. Dwight Marshall suggested that the event should be modeled
after the All-American Award which was already in existence. The difference however, would
be the inclusion of academics as an integral part of the overall criteria. The matter was discussed, and it was decided that the All-Bahamian Award would be that signature event.
Once it was established, standards were discussed which would then lead to the selection on
the first ever All-Bahamian inductees. After much debate, it was decided that athletics alone
would identify the first class, with both athletics and academics deciding future recipients.
The committee also realized that this award also afforded us the opportunity to identify past
legends of track and field as honorary All-Bahamians, a very important and necessary feature
of this event. The first honorary recipients were Ms Maryann Higgs and Mr. Rudy Levarity.
The next question surrounded the venue that an even such as this should be held. The committee then also agreed that any venue recommended for consideration should be one which
adds an additional degree of prestige to the event. Mr. Roosevelt Thompson then recommended that and event of this importance should only take place at the Government House
which is synonymous with honour and prestige in this country.
In this its fourth year, the All-Bahamian Award continues to be the signature award for junior
track and field athletes in this country. In this short period since its inception, our junior athletes have ascended to great heights in track and field with the potential of going even higher
in the years to come. This All-Bahamian Award was created to identify and celebrate these
athletes, who are the toast of the world, but who are also our little darlings, our little heroes,
our All- Bahamians.
