God’s Call to Us
(The St. Joseph Parish Mission Statement)
St. Joseph Parish is a community chosen and called by
God to be sent and directed by the Holy Spirit.
It exists to provide the People of God the pastoral care and
spiritual nourishment they need to proclaim the good
news of Christ in their lives and to the world.
Our Response to God’s Call
(The St. Joseph Parish Vision Statement)
St. Joseph Parish is a community of God’s People empowered
by the Holy Spirit to promote God’s reign in the world.
Nourished by Word and Sacrament, we will grow together in
faith, hope, and in a passionate love of God and neighbor.
In our families, we will teach and learn the love of Jesus Christ.
In our various occupations we will make decisions
and set priorities in accordance with the values of the Gospel.
And in the world around us we will stand always for
justice, compassion and peace.
Sacraments
Baptisms: We celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism every Sunday. Parents are
required to attend a Baptismal formation meeting. Baptisms are scheduled at
this meeting. Please call the Parish Center for reservations and further
information.
Marriages: Arrangements should be made at least six months in advance to
provide ample time for preparation of this sacrament. Please call the Parish
Center for more information.
Sick or Homebound: If you or a member of your family is hospitalized or
homebound and would like a priest to visit, please notify the Parish Center.
Parish Boundaries: North: Tollway; South: 59th St. East: Prospect Ave. &
extensions north and south; West: Belmont Avenue
PASTOR’S CORNER
D
ear Parishioners,
The Gospel for the Second Sunday of Lent always presents an account of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Its
message of hope sustains us throughout the forty days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. With Peter, James, and
John, we are invited to ascend the mountain of revelation with Jesus and to glimpse the glory of divinity hidden
within his humanity. We, like them, cannot remain on the mountain for long. But we take heart, knowing that
the saving power of God is transforming us each day into the glorious image of Christ. May this Lent help us
appreciate this wonder with gratitude and awe. (Daily Prayer 2016)
And so, when we come down from the mountain, we continue the work of the Lord. Our forty days of
the intensified practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving – and these are a part of the Christian life all
year long! - should ground us even more in the awareness of God’s mercy.
Our sincere prayer keeps the needs of others before us;
Our consistent fasting helps us realize that we need far less than we seem to think; and
Our almsgiving teaches us that we have far more to share than we ever imagined.
In this season of Lent, a season of preparation for initiation and renewal, please remember those adults
who will be journeying to the font for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, our
young people preparing to celebrate Confirmation on March 11, and our young children preparing for
First Eucharist in the spring.
May all of us grow in the spirit of Jesus who has led the way for us from death to life!
Joyfully in Christ,
Father John Phan

Second Sunday in Lent
In today’s second reading we learn that one of Saint
Paul’s principles of Christian living is to watch and
imitate other followers of Christ. There is a pattern for
Christian living that Saint Paul wants others to discover
and then imitate. This pattern includes a life of prayer,
selflessness, sacrifice, and caring for others, including
our family of faith. Good stewards choose their friends
wisely. They cultivate friendships with other Christian
stewards, spend time with them, observe how they
live, ask questions about their faith and learn from
them. Who are your friends? Are they good stewards
of their faith? Are they those who can help you on
your own journey of faith?
Direction
The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are going.

Back to the Basics…
What We Believe
The Characteristics of Faith
Part IV of IV
Faith—the beginning of eternal life
Faith makes us taste in advance the light of the beatific vision, the goal of our journey here below. Then we shall
see God “face to face,” “as he is.” So faith is already the beginning of eternal life: When we contemplate the
blessings of faith even now, as if gazing at a reflection in a mirror, it is as if we already possessed the wonderful
things which our faith assures us we shall one day enjoy.
Now, however, “we walk by faith, not by sight”; we perceive God as “in a mirror, dimly” and only “in part.” Even
though enlightened by him in whom it believes, faith is often lived in darkness and can be put to the test. The world
we live in often seems very far from the one promised us by faith. Our experiences of evil and suffering, injustice,
and death, seem to contradict the Good News; they can shake our faith and become a temptation against it.
It is then we must turn to the witnesses of faith: to Abraham, who “in hope... believed against hope”; to the Virgin
Mary, who, in “her pilgrimage of faith,” walked into the “night of faith” in sharing the darkness of her son’s suffering
and death; and to so many others: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us
also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set
before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”

discipline we must cultivate in the Lenten season, a discipline
centered in Christ. These meditations cover topics such as
finding our identity in God, prayer as the key to mission, our
thirst for God, how to end our alienation from God, and how
to joyfully embrace the way of happiness.
Stop by the Lighthouse Catholic Media display in the church
narthex to purchase a copy of the above CD.

Second Sunday of Lent
Look at the night sky; don’t pitch a tent. So many
stars! Too many to count. That is the un-numberable
number of Abram’s descendants – of which each of us is
a part. God promised then, and promises still today in
covenantal love and mercy to care for us, protect us, and
be our only God. This Lent, let us go looking for
descendant stars, people born of Abraham and Sarah and
loved by God. Let us go looking for those who need
embracing. Let us go looking for those who need some
special care, some covenantal kindness, many kind
words. Let us look. Then let us act.
Gospel of Luke 13:1-9
February 28
Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose
blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their
sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, “Do you think
that because these Galileans suffered in this way they
were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no
means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all
perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who
were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them—
do you think they were more guilty than everyone
else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell
you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they
did!”
And he told them this parable:
“There once was a person who had a fig tree planted
in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on
it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three
years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig
tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why
should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply,
‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall culƟvate the
ground around it and ferƟlize it; it may bear fruit in
the future. If not you can cut it down.’”

A man wakes up after sleeping
under an ADVERTISED blanket
on an ADVERTISED mattress
and pulls off ADVERTISED pajamas
bathes in an ADVERTISED shower
shaves with an ADVERTISED razor
brushes his teeth
with ADVERTISED toothpaste
washes with ADVERTISED soap
puts on ADVERTISED clothes
drinks a cup
of ADVERTISED coffee
drives to work
in an ADVERTISED car
and then . . . .
refuses to ADVERTISE
believing it doesn’t pay.
Later if business is poor
he ADVERTISES it for sale.
