Shofar Message ~ JANUARY 2016
One of my favorite moments of our K’TanTan Shabbat program is the enthusiastic linkage of Shabbat and tzedakah.
After we light and bless the Shabbat candles, the parents reach into their wallets to give money to their children,
who eagerly surround the tzedakah box waiting for their turn to make a contribution. And since nothing in
K’TanTan happens without a song, Debbie Waldman and the clergy team accompany the ritual of giving
with Debbie’s own special composition:
Something to lend and something to share,
That’s what money is for.
When I am little, I have little to give,
But when I am old I’ll give more.
This song, simple in its lyrics, and easy for little ones to understand, tunefully reinforces the meaning and
importance of the mitzvah of tzedakah. The rabbis teach us that the values of giving and generosity bear
no relationship to wealth or status; the obligation of tzedakah ~ that is, righteousness or justice ~ is a
lifelong commitment. As the song teaches, we may not have much to give as children, but as we grow ~ in
independence and in income ~ our generosity will continue to increase. Judaism teaches that tzedakah is not
just a donation to charity; it is a way of life.
Here at Temple Beth-El, our children may begin with a “penny in the pushke,” but as they grow into adolescence,
their understanding and commitment to the world around them requires a much more active engagement. This
year, from January 22 - 25, our 10th grade Confirmation class will be taking its annual trip to Washington D.C.
for the Reform movement’s L’Taken seminar.
L’Taken, which is the Hebrew phrase “to fix,” (and the Hebrew infinitive for tikkun ~ fixing or healing) is a program
that enables the Reform Movement’s 10th graders to meet with their Congressional representatives and legislative
aides to lobby on the current issues of the day. This program is tzedakah in the form of deeds. Our young people
may not have substantial dollars to give, but they have something even more valuable: their ideals, their intellect, and
their passion.
Last year, our students learned about and lobbied their representatives on a variety of social justice issues that spoke
to their Jewish ideals. On the domestic front, they worked together to advocate for gun control, climate change
legislation, stem cell research, immigration policy and economic inequality. In foreign policy, they learned about the
many challenges facing Israel, including the Middle East peace process and the ramifications of the numerous Arab
civil wars. This year, our students will be learning about Israel’s democratic institutions and the Reform Movement’s
legal efforts on behalf of religious freedom and civil rights.
This unique opportunity ~ to meet our representatives and see first-hand how our political system works ~ is provided by
the Reform Movement’s Religious Action Center, a powerful Washington lobby representing our movement’s social and
political interests. Moreover, because Rhode Island is a small state, and David Cicilline is both our congressman and a
member of our synagogue, our young people have a unique opportunity to build a strong and continuing relationship
with their federal representative.
I look forward to traveling to Washington with our students (including my son, Judah), learning about the issues that
we face, and most importantly, establishing the connections between their political passions and their Jewish
ideals. This will surely be a weekend to remember.

and bloom, a reminder of the rebirth
and beauty of the land and of our
responsibility as God’s partners to care
for it and to appreciate it. The holiday of
Tu B’Shevat, the 15th Day of the Month
of Shevat (when the moon is full) reminds
us of this sacred obligation and gives us
the opportunity to plant seeds and trees
that will grow here and in Israel.

Although Willa Perlman is a relatively new member to the Temple Beth-El family, she serves on TBE’s Board of Directors, the Transition Committee and Religious
School Board. Willa is the Managing
Partner and founder of Ligature Partners,
Inc., an executive search and consulting
firm. Prior to becoming a recruiter, Willa garnered many years of senior level
experience in book publishing, intellectual property development, and general
management roles. Willa is also the
author of two children’s books, Pocket Kisses and Goodnight, World. She
graduated from Barnard College in
1981 with a degree in Developmental
Psychology and has two sons;
Jonathan, 23 and Ben, 13.

a biweekly column (“It Seems to Me”) that appears in each issue
of The Jewish Voice and Herald.
Rabbi Rosenberg retired as
spiritual leader of Temple Habonim,
a Reform congregation in
Barrington, in July 2007, having served the
community for 33 years. He has taught courses
in Jewish studies at Tufts University and at
Connecticut College in New London. He has
been writing poetry for more than 20 years.
Some of his poems and translations of modern
Hebrew poetry have appeared in national
periodicals. In 2007, he completed a ten year
term as Poetry Editor of the CCAR Journal of
Reform Judaism.

To Rose, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means that I am no longer going to
be someone taken care of by the Jewish community, but actually be an
active part of it. For her Mitzvah Mania project Rose is working with
Sasha Keizler to raise money for art supplies and project activities for
kids with cancer at Hasbro Hospital. There have been two successful
bake sales to date and their next fundraiser is in the works. Rose is also
planning to visit the children in the hospital. In the future, Rose sees
herself accelerating in interior design or as a construction project
manager and hopes to always continue being an athlete.

In Ana’s words, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means hard work,
enunciation during and the feeling of accomplishment at the end (I
hope). For her mitzvah project Ana planted and tended vegetables at
Fox Point Community Garden. The proceeds/produce was donated to
Camp Street Community Ministries, working to end hunger and poverty
here in Providence. She also volunteered at Camp Street Ministries
to store and distribute the food. In the future Ana hopes to become a
neurologist or microbiologist. She would like to live in the countryside
in a modest house and be fluent in at least five languages.

kind. Note: All medicines must be
current. Expired medications are not
allowed into Cuba. Half used bottles

Hillel Council
of New England
in Newton,
Massachusetts. She
is also Hillel Director for Simmons
College, Emerson College, and
Suffolk University. Ms. Blue will be
discussing the importance of youth
involvement in Jewish communities, the
importance of getting involved with
Hillel at the beginning of one’s college
career, and much more.

guest, Kara
Sundlun. Kara is
a two time Emmy
award-winning
Journalist, News
Anchor, and Host of “Better Connecticut”

also the author of the book, Finding Dad,
From Love Child to Daughter, the story of
her reunion with her father, former Beth-El
President, and Lindenbaum “Man of the
Year” winner, Governor Bruce Sundlun.

Our member, LAUREN WEINSTOCK has won approval of a large federal
grant to test the effectiveness of her SPIRIT (Suicide Prevention for at - Risk
Individuals in Transition) program. Funding for the project comes from a fouryear grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, the National Institute
of Justice, the National Institutes of Health Office of Behavioral and Social
Sciences Research.
