JUNE 2014 EDITION
Happy Summer,
We love this time of year and so do the Shelties. As the weather warms up the dog hair
comes in abundance. Please do not shave your sheltie. This makes them hotter; they can get
skin issues and sun burned. One should never shave a double coated dog. Shelties do
“blow” their coats about 2-3 times a year. I have found this is what works best for me: I
rake them really well (all the way to the skin), give them a bath using a warm rinse. Let
them air dry for about 1/2 hour then using a PET Hair Drier the hair just flies out. My
back yard looks like it snowed. Don't forget those feet and nails. Working with un kept
rescues, we get a great deal of rescues in with fungus on their pads due to the wet grass etc.,
not having the paws trimmed they don't dry out well enough. Nails should be done at least
twice a month. If the nail is hitting the floor they are too long, causing pressure on the feet
and nail, almost like you wearing shoes with over grown toe nails OUCH! Another Note...A
great deal of People are feeding Blue Buffalo. It was good food a few months back, but it
has now been purchased by P&G which of course they have changed the formula and
cheapened the quality. Some foods I would like to recommend: Wellness, Fromm, Natures
Logic, Honest Kitchen, Grandma Lucy and there are others. This site is great to give you
the real truth of what is in your dog food: http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/ Take a look at
what By-Products are and cheap fillers such as corn, soy gluten and many more.
As always we are here to answer any questions or help find the answer.
Thank you ALL for helping us in finding such wonderful homes for our Shelties.

LORA & THE GANG!
A Note from Michelle, Newsletter
Editor…
I want to thank everyone who has
submitted their stories & photos to MidFlorida Sheltie Rescue. Unfortunately I
did not have the chance to do a newsletter
in the first quarter of the year. I hope you
all enjoy this mid-year issue and continue
to send in your stories and photos. We
love hearing from you and how your
Shelties are doing. I want to thank you for
your continued support. Without you we
could not keep this Rescue going.

SPECIAL THANKS TO PAM SHAIA
& STAN PENGELLY OF FROM
OLIVES AND GRAPES
On Saturday, 11/23/13, Pam Shaia and
Stan Pengelly at From Olives and Grapes
in Cocoa Village presented checks to
three local animal rescue groups: Golden
Retriever Rescue of Mid-Florida; MidFlorida Sheltie Rescue; and, Coastal
Poodle Rescue. These checks reflected all
proceeds made from the sale of their firsttime-this-year fall-related Doggie Treats
sold in their Cocoa Village and
Downtown Melbourne Shoppes. Nine
happy dogs, representing each animal
rescue organization, were on-paw for the
check presentation (see attached photos).
Thank you Pam & Stan for your
continued support of Mid Florida

Even if you cannot adopt, you can still do
something to become a "Sheltie Angel."
It has been almost 2 years since Roo has
passed. Roo’s death was tragic. He was
frightened by neighbors lighting
fireworks just before the 4th of July
holiday in 2012. Roo was in his fenced in
yard. The sound of the fireworks
frightened him so much that he managed
to jump the fence and run off. He was
later found at a lake where he had
drowned. Very tragic. Please, please,
please make sure your dogs are safe
during the upcoming holiday time. No one
knows when fireworks will suddenly be
set off, but take precautions to keep your
dog safe. At the first sound of fireworks
keep your dogs in the house. During a
prolonged period of fireworks sounding
off, put your dogs in a room where they
will be safe and turn up the television or
music to help drown out the sound. Please
remember to KEEP your ID tags on your
dogs. We hope you all have a safe 4th of
July holiday.
Please see below for ways to help the Shelties in
need:
*Donate a Bed
*Foster a Dog – Application to Foster is
on our website.
FOSTER FAMILIES NEEDED!
Mid-Florida Sheltie Rescue is looking for
interested foster families. If you would
like to help out, please fill out a “foster
application” on our website. All
interested foster families must have a
fenced in yard to ensure the safety of our
Shelties.
MFSR provides the food and medications
needed for their Rescues. We need YOU
to provide the shelter and love to help
these precious animals until the time their
“furever” family is found.

One of my favorite sites of Ms. P, is when
I leave, she peeks thru the doggie door.
Happy Birthday Penelope!
In February of 2004, we lost our dear
sweet Alexis of 15 years. Our hearts were
broken, as Alexis was picked from the
litter, at the age of 4 weeks.
WE could NEVER fill the void, however,
our other pups, were missing that
“dominate female leader” and beside,
let’s face it, it is just not the same without
a sweet female sheltie in the house.
So, we traveled over to meet w/Barbara,
Sheltie Rescue on a Friday afternoon.
WOW..talk about a house full of
wonderful pups, all ages. I was having a
difficult time choosing, however, Penny
(now know as Ms, P or Penelope) who
had lived with Barbara, traveled, a family
member, was the choice. So, on Saturday,
in April, 2004, Penny came to our house.
Barbara only asked of us one important
thing, “ to not over feed her, and keep her
on the same food”.
I am happy to report, that 10 years later,
Ms P is one happy “lean and leading”
Sheltie, always enjoying her carrots. Not
just any carrot, prefers the organic sweet
baby carrot.
Now as I drive away and the garage door
goes down, I ponder…”is she checking to
say good bye? Or checking to make sure I
left? Or better yet…”MOM is GONELet’s Party, the HOUSE IS OURS”
Our Ms P is 16 years old this week. She
“rules” this house. We don’t need an
alarm clock, feeding schedule, or alarm
system. Ms P has those items well
covered. She
is a Mom’s girl..as she will not settle, until
I settle. The week’s I am on travel, she
looks for me all night, and reminds
Papa…”Mom is not home” with her
whimpers.
We are blest to have a healthy Ms P, who
suffers for skin lupus. An occasional flair
up, but, nothing that her daily vit E can’t
handle.
Ms P has a younger brother, Achu(13),
who is totally blind and deaf. Ms P
guides him along, and reminds us, not to
rearrange or change any routine; I refer
to Achu as our little “Helen Keller”.
Then, there is the younger sister,
Paislee(11). Yes, there are stories on her
as well, however, this all about our dear
sweet 16 Ms P.

SHELTIES AT “FROM OLIVES AND
GRAPES” IN COCOA VILLAGE
Happy Birthday Penelope! CON’T…
So for those of you, who, have never had
or fear owning an older sheltie, you don’t
know what you are missing! A sheltie is
always a puppy, full of energy, love til the
bitter sweet end. So, open your hearts,
and rescue a well trained, house broken,
lease trained sheltie. You will want a
house full, just like us.
Happy Birthday Our Sweet “MS P”! (oh
just like her Mom, we don’t talk about
age)

FROM OLIVES AND GRAPES…
Once again, Pam Shaia & Stan Pengelly

the proceeds of their Doggie Treats to
area Rescue Groups including MidFlorida Sheltie Rescue.
THANK YOU PAM & STAN ONCE
AGAIN FOR YOUR GENEROSITY TO
OUR RESCUE AND TO THE OTHER
RESCUE GROUPS IN THE AREA!

Children reading to Charlie at the Lake
Wales Public Library
Charlie, a 5 year old Sheltie, is Dr. Judy
Shoemaker’s Therapy Dog. Charlie is
certified, tested, licensed and insured. He
visits the Lake Wales Public Library
every Monday. Dr. Shoemaker and
Charlie are members of Therapy Dogs
International. They are involved in a
program called Tail Waggin Tutors in
which they help children to be more
confident in their reading skills. The
Children build confidence by reading to
the dogs. Charlie and Dr. Shoemaker also
visit Bartow Public Library every 4th
Saturday. Charlie and Dr. Shoemaker
also visit nursing homes, schools and
other facilities.
Thank you Dr. Shoemaker for the great
work that you and Charlie do for the
community. We are proud to have you in
our Sheltie family!

Some of our Shelties Available for
Adoption…
Mid Florida Sheltie Rescue rescued this
Sheltie earlier in the year. This poor boy
weighed 42.4 lbs. in early February 2014.
He is now down to 29.8 lbs. He was
having difficulty standing to eat. He was
diagnosed with a thyroid problem. With
strict diet and 2 thyroid pills a day, this
Sheltie is becoming fit & trim. Please do
not over feed. Shelties are workers. They
are meant to be "lean." They depend on
us to be "fair" and feed them what their
body needs.
4 Months Later…Here he is at 29.8 lbs.
Feeling much better!
