President’s Report:
A Golden Opportunity
By HBA President Rob Miles
With St. Patrick’s Day quickly approaching, I got to thinking about how much I could use
a pot of gold right now. But, I thought to myself, that may be tricky to find, especially
considering that we haven’t had many rainbows or much sunshine in the building industry
as of late. As an eternal optimist, I am thankful, however, that I have perhaps the next
best thing - an HBA membership. Well, maybe it isn’t quite the next best thing – but it
is something of great value.
What does being a member of the HBA mean to you? To me, it provides a great
opportunity to stay connected within the local, state and national industry, the chance
to network with suppliers, contractors and peers, and also, it means that I have an added
endorsement to my business that sets me apart from non-HBA members.
As most of you are aware, March starts the peak building season, and, for most of us,
the busiest and most profitable time for our own companies. It is also the same for the
Association, and is one of the most critical times for the Association in terms of public
outreach.
First, our annual Greater Tulsa Home & Garden Show is scheduled for March 10-13
at the QuikTrip Center at Expo Square. The largest, oldest and best home and garden
products show in the state, the Home & Garden Show was started in 1949, and to our
knowledge, it is the first consumer trade show of its kind in the country. With more than
450 exhibitors, special features and a dedicated volunteer force led by Chair Mary Pearce
and Co-Chair Rick Shoemaker, this year’s event promises to continue the tradition of
excellence. This single event accounts for half of the annual revenue of the Association it is our largest and one of the most important events we host each year. I encourage you
to make a point to get out and see the Show – not only will it give you a chance to see and
shop the businesses of many HBA members first-hand, but it is a great opportunity to see
the latest trends in the industry, and also a fun event for the whole family.
Next, starting in March, you will see a new advertising campaign for the HBA. We
recognize that with the state of the industry, the time has never been more important
for our members to gain a competitive edge, and so we are working to create a member
advantage that will help attract customers beyond anything that has been done in recent
memory. The HBA leadership has made a commitment to launch an expanded advertising
effort to educate consumers on the importance of working with HBA members.
This three-to-five year campaign will feature three television commercials that will air
between March and September. The ads showcase the resources available from the HBA,
and will convey that HBA members are the industry’s true professionals. We hope that
as a result, customers will seek out, or check that companies are HBA members before
making their purchasing decisions. If you aren’t using it already, this would be a great
time to add the HBA logo to your signage, business collateral and advertising campaigns
to help further the message and identify yourself as a member. We want people to start
seeing the HBA logo everywhere – and to start recognizing the credibility that it stands
for. If you need an electronic version of the logo – you can download one on the HBA
web site. Or just call the HBA office and they can send one to you. We also have static
decals and stickers available.
If you have any ideas about other ways that we can promote the Association, please
forward them to the HBA office to [email protected], or via regular mail to my
attention, and they will be reviewed by the PR committee in confidentiality. My goal
is that at the end of this year, when you are considering all of the return each business
investment has produced, that your HBA dues will be the easiest to validate. Know that
the organization is working every day to help you navigate through this difficult market
– and we are dedicated to doing anything possible to speed the recovery.
And if you can’t yet answer the question I posed at the beginning of this article – then I
strongly urge you to make this the year that you get involved, and find out firsthand just
how many benefits are available to you as an HBA member. With a variety of monthly
meetings, events and educational opportunities – you might be missing out on something
that can help to elevate your company to the next level….a figurative “pot of gold”.

Kane’s Corner:
Pay It Forward
By Paul Kane , Executive Vice President/CEO
By now you have hopefully heard about our Pay it Forward Campaign this year.
The Pay it Forward concept is a simple one: after doing a good deed for someone,
instead of having them pay you back, have the recipient pay it forward to another.
Thus starts a chain of forward-looking good deeds.
Paying it Forward is nothing new. A movie was made about the concept over
10 years ago. (Good movie, by the way. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth
renting.) In fact, it goes back even further than that. In 1784, Benjamin Franklin
wrote in a letter: “I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When
you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by
lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation,
when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus
go thro’ many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This
is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.” Ol’ Ben sure had
a way of talking, didn’t he?
Oprah did something kind of cool with the concept in 2006. She gave 300
audience members $1,000 each on a debit card and a camcorder, and asked them
to record their acts of kindness. I’m sure the end result was very touching. I
wouldn’t really know, because I don’t watch Oprah. But you don’t have to be as
rich as Oprah, giving away $1,000 and a camcorder in order to make a difference.
It can be something as simple as paying someone’s toll on a toll road, or paying
for their groceries. You can even do things which cost you nothing. On Black
Friday, there was a woman with a screaming toddler behind me in a checkout
line. There were several people ahead of us. Feeling the woman’s pain of an
inconsolable child, I discreetly asked those ahead of us in line to let the woman
go next to the register. She was so grateful you would have thought I just gave
her $1,000.
In order to assist our members in their efforts to pay it forward, we printed up
2,000 business sized cards which can be handed out after a good deed is done.
You should have received one in the mail already. If not, and you want some,
come by the HBA. The idea is not to draw attention to yourself as the giver of
the kindness, but to let the community know that HBA members are doing this.
It becomes a win-win-win deal. The recipient obviously benefits from your act of
kindness. You benefit because of the good feelings which come about from doing
such a deed. And the HBA benefits from being known as the organization which
is promoting this effort. In the end, we were looking for a way to exhibit that
our members DO care about their community. Small acts of kindness sprinkled
among our 900 members can be as powerful as one big act of kindness by the
association.

As a final note, I would ask each of you to share your act of kindness with us.
We would like to compile them and share them with the membership later in the
year. You can email them to Valerie Heritage, our Public Relations Director
([email protected]).
The great thing about this campaign is that there is no way to lose on this. Even if
we accomplish nothing more than cause some of our members to do good deeds
and feel good about themselves; isn’t that enough? In these troubling economic
times, acts of kindness are more important than ever.

January GMM - January 18, 2011
2011 kicked off to a great start at the HBA during the Association’s first General Membership Meeting, presented by Andrews
Lighting Gallery. More than 175 members attended the event, which featured a builder panel of four experienced builders,
Rick Dodson of Dodson & Associates, Brad McMains of Hunter Homes, Gary Soderstrom of Gem Properties, and Allen
Jenkins of Celebrity Homes and Silvercrest Homes, who shared stories from their businesses, of both good times and bad.
In addition, the membership was treated to a presentation from the Tulsa Chamber on the Tulsa’s Future program. The next
monthly meeting will be Associate Appreciation Night, scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 at 6 p.m.

Come on Spring!
June 11-19, 2011
Mark your calendars! The area’s premier new home showcase event,
the 2011 Greater Tulsa Parade of Homes is coming soon, and the HBA
is excited to announce that this year’s event will again feature more
than 100 homes throughout metro Tulsa! This year’s Grand Plan will
be Stone Canyon subdivision in Owasso.
MARCH 2011
By Remodelers Council President
Chad Potter,
Drywall Repair Specialists
With the massive amounts of snow
behind us, and spring just around the
corner, it’s a good time to set goals and
prepare ourselves and businesses for
the long and busy days of spring and
summer. After sitting home for nearly
two weeks due to our largest snowfall
on record, I know I’m ready to regroup
and get back to work. I have to admit,
it’s hard to get motivated and jump
back into the daily grind after such a
long and slow break.
To help get yourself motivated,
set goals for the rest of the year. I
like to set long term (2-5 year) goals
and goals for the current year, which
includes annual, monthly and weekly
goals. I also like to make a “how to
achieve” area under each goal, to make
notes on how this can be achieved in
the desired time I have set. Whether
you are a business owner, salesperson,
production manager or hold any other
position in a business, goals are a great
way to get motivated and to increase
your customer base and your bottom
line.
This is also a great time to de-clutter
our work areas. Take some time to
clean out those piles of paperwork that
have grown over the last few months.
Clean out desk drawers, file cabinets,
and vehicle debris that has filled your
console. It’s a great feeling to sit down
at your desk and start with your tasks,
rather than having to restack piles of
paperwork that at this point are mostly
trash.
Good luck setting goals and decluttering. Don’t forget to check in on
your goals often. It’s a great feeling
to see what you’ve achieved or what
needs more attention.
I would like to thank The Womble
Company, 2011 Remodeler’s Council
presenting sponsor. Please join us for
our next Council meeting on the first
Thursday of the month at 5 p.m. The
March sponsor is Marvin Krueger,
CPA, CMA, and dinner and drinks will
be provided. The monthly meeting is
a great opportunity to network with
others in the remodeling industry,
and educate yourself on current issues
affecting the industry.

number of starts was down
for the month of January, it is
noteworthy that Tulsa proper
and many of the closer suburbs
actually stayed very even
with the 2010 figures,” said
Rob Miles, veteran home
builder and President of the
Home Builders Association
of Greater Tulsa.
“The
housing industry is poised
for a comeback in 2011, and
builders are hopeful that with
the start of the peak building
season in the coming months
demand for new housing will
increase.”
The latest economic
forecasts are predicting that
the national housing industry
will begin to recover in 2011,
with Tulsa expected to be
one of the first areas to show
signs of imrpovement.

Small Homes, Small Details Among New Home Design Trends
Open floor plans, energyefficient features, and lots of
closet space are among the
elements that today’s home
buyers are seeking in newlyconstructed homes, according
to industry experts at the
2011 International Builders’
Show. The research and
trends presented
at the show offer
valuable insights
and information to
home builders so
that they can build
homes that appeal
to the modern
consumer’s
preferences.
O n c e - p o p u l a r
features such as
large living rooms,
soaking
tubs
and second-floor
laundry rooms are
now out of favor.
Home
buyers
found that the
convenience of not having
to carry laundry to another
floor was outweighed by the
noise that interrupted their
sleep.
Home buyers are looking
for small details in their new
homes, such as a built-in
desk under a stairway, or a

courtyard tucked between
two downstairs bedrooms.
Successful home builders
“create memory points,”
said design trends seminar
speaker Kate Brennan of the
Chicago design firm Mary
Cook and Associates.
According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, the average
size of a new single family
home decreased from 2,438
square feet to 2,377 in 2010.
This made designing to
maximize space a popular
theme at the show. One
session focused exclusively
on new ideas in home design
for floor plans measuring
2,500 square feet or less.
Open floor plans are now
in high demand because they
are not only more practical
for entertaining – the hosts
can interact with their dinner
guests in a spacious kitchen
while they are preparing
food – but the lack of walls
and closed-off spaces make
the home seem much larger.
The kitchen is now the
hub of the home more than
ever. Even if busy families
are bringing home takeout,
they want the kitchen island
to be large enough to serve
a multi-tasking purpose as
a place to do homework,
crafts, and pay bills – as
well as to enjoy coffee on a
Sunday morning.
Natural finishes are also
more popular.
Recycled
flooring, using a mix of
wood grains on the cabinets
and architectural details
that reflect the indigenous

building of the region –
such as using stucco in
the Southwest – are more
important to buyers.
Session panelists also
shared that home builders
should pay attention to a
growing group of home
buyers: WINKs – Women
with No Kids. These women
have distinct preferences
that don’t quite fit into
the usual categories that
home designers talk about:
first-time buyers who tend
to be singles and young
professionals,
move-up
buyers who usually have
children, and empty-nesters.
WINKs have more buying
power than a generation
ago and are seeking smaller
homes that have multipurpose
rooms for entertaining along
with intimate “retreat”
spaces for themselves.
A survey of 20,000
home buyers in the United
States and Canada points
out that there are a number
of features in new homes
that are considered nonnegotiable across almost all
demographic groups, said
Paul Cardis of AVID Ratings
Co., who spoke at a seminar
on new design preferences.
The top five features
include walk-in closets –
mentioned by 66 percent of
first-time buyers as a “must
have” – energy-efficient
appliances, linen closets, a
large kitchen and the overall
efficiency of the home,
Cardis said.

HBA to support
Tulsa’s Future
The
Tulsa
Metro
Chamber is beginning a
new five-year chapter for
an economic development
intiative - and the HBA
has made a commitment to
support the program.
Tulsa’s Future II is the
second phase of a program
by the Chamber that aims
to generate 10,000 primary,
high-value jobs with salaries
of $50,000 or greater, and to
create a capital investment
of more than $1 billion.
The HBA will commit
$25,000, or $5,000 over
each of the next five years,
to the effort. To date, the
Chamber has raised roughly
$12 million in commitments
from about 75 different
public and private investors.
The largest percentage
of the funds ($4 million)
will be used toward business
attraction and marketing.
MARCH 2011
Another $2.5 million will be
used for education and work
force attraction.
The job creation efforts
will focus on several key
industries including energy,
aerospace and aviation, health
care, regional headquarters
and professional services,
machinery and electrical
equipment manufacturing,
transportation, distribution
and logistics, and two
emerging areas - information
security and entertainmenttourism.
The first phase of the
program, Tulsa’s Future I
generated 15,359 jobs in five
years, around half of which
earned more than $45,500.
The program was instrumental
in helping the area to offset
the recession, and has been
key in positioning the area to
weather the economic storm.
