There are several compelling reasons to implement a NetVanta router solution
as part of your networking plan:
1. Operating under a tightened telecom budget,
you would like to find a better value in access
routers, without compromising quality or
performance. NetVanta routers represent a
reliable, high-value alternative to the leading
access router brand. Lower acquisition cost,
coupled with exceptional reliability, high
performance, five-year warranty, unlimited
telephone technical support, and free
firmware updates, lowers the total cost of
ownership for NetVanta router users.
2. Network security has become a top priority
at your firm, and you are seeking an access
routing solution that includes a firewall at no
additional cost. The NetVanta Router Series is
equipped with a powerful, high-performance
stateful inspection firewall that protects your
network against intruders.
3. You’ve considered using a different brand
of access router, but have been reluctant to
change due to the learning curve associated
with a new product. The NetVanta Router Series
is a standards-based solution with a Command
Line Interface (CLI) that mimics the de facto
industry standard, plus a user-friendly webbased graphical user interface (GUI), both of
which eliminate the need for retraining or
costly industry certification.
4. You’re concerned about the long-term
staying power of new vendors introducing
price-competitive LAN devices. ADTRAN is
one of the most viable contenders in today’s
cost-conscious networking market. A valuedriven engineering company, ADTRAN has a
16-year history of profitability in network access.
Routers and other LAN gear provide a natural
extension of our well-established business in
carrier and enterprise network access solutions.
Every NetVanta router
is backed by ADTRAN’s
100% satisfaction
guarantee, including
unlimited telephone
technical support and
free firmware updates.

The NetVanta 3000 Series supports a
user-friendly, web-based graphical user interface (GUI).
This web-GUI provides step-by-step configuration wizards that
walk you through the exact steps needed for proper configuration.
Multiple management options

When adding, replacing, or upgrading an access
router, consider the value-rich alternative.
The NetVanta® Router Series from ADTRAN® gives you
everything you need in a router at half the cost you’re
accustomed to paying.
NetVanta routers
reduce initial and
ongoing equipment
expenditures, provide
reliable routing and
circuit termination,
and fit seamlessly into
existing operations.
A reliable operating system
Inherent QoS functionality
NetVanta 3000/4000/5000 routers employ the
ADTRAN Operating System (OS) for advanced
standards-based functionality, interoperability
across NetVanta platforms (switch, router,
VPN), and ease of integration in multi-vendor
networks. The ADTRAN OS makes quick and
responsive IP routing decisions based on the
configuration options and protocols selected.
It supports static routing, as well as popular
IP routing protocols, such as BGP, OSPF, and
RIP. Bridging is used to support non-IP protocols. For wide area connectivity, Frame Relay,
PPP, Multilink PPP, and PPPoE protocols
are supported.
NetVanta routers are fully equipped to handle
delay-sensitive applications like Voice over IP
or Video over IP by classifying traffic, changing
or marking packets if necessary, and directing
traffic to a priority queue. These devices use
DiffServ for packet marking or re-marking,
Low Latency and Weighted Fair Queuing to
ensure prioritization of critical traffic, and
Frame Relay Fragmentation to break up long
packets and avoid jitter.
Two full versions of the ADTRAN OS can
coexist on a NetVanta router, simplifying
the testing of newly released versions and
permitting system backup. New enhancements
to firmware can be implemented throughout
a network using TFTP or FTP update from
a central location.
Top-notch network security
NetVanta routers include a high-performance
stateful inspection firewall to protect against
network intrusion, while enabling employee
access to valuable corporate information
resources. This stringent line of defense
identifies and protects against common
Denial of Service (DoS) attempts, such as
TCP SYN flooding, IP spoofing, ICMP redirect,
ping of death, and IP reassembly problems.
6 • 800 615 1176 • www.adtran.com/router
Affordable and secure connectivity
across the Internet
VPN functionality can be added to any NetVanta
router with a simple upgrade. This upgrade
includes IPSec-based Virtual Private
Networking (VPN) with advanced security
features, such as DES/3DES/AES encryption
and user authentication, including Internet
Key Exchange (IKE), X.509 Digital Certificates,
and XAUTH authentication. A NetVanta
Dial backup Interface Module (DIM) added
to these models creates a VPN-secured
disaster recovery link.
Seamless integration into network
operations.
NetVanta Series routers plug into any
standards-compliant network and can coexist
on that network with other brand name routers.
The Command Line Interface (CLI) is similar to
the one you’re accustomed to using, eliminating
the training costs normally associated with
learning a new product. The sequence of
commands used to setup, configure, and
manage the NetVanta Series is closely aligned
with those used in incumbent products.
A single-source, fully integrated
LAN/WAN solution
The NetVanta Value Proposition
In addition to NetVanta Series routers, ADTRAN
offers a full line of managed Layer 2 Ethernet switches
and VPN/Internet security appliances. When used in
combination, NetVanta routers, switches, and VPN
appliances offer the highest possible level of
integration in an enterprise network for a complete
WAN-to-the-desktop solution. These product lines
share the ADTRAN OS, ensuring common configuration
practices, VPN policies, protection schemes, and
management interfaces across product lines and
across your network.

a floating static route becomes active, automatically re-routing traffic
over the ADSL circuit. The PPP dial backup shown here uses an ISDN
BRI connection. The ISDN backup scheme is implemented by adding the
ISDN BRI dial backup interface module to the NetVanta router, which
dials back to the host NetVanta 4305 through a PPP connection.
NetVanta 3000 and 4000 Series routers offer various backup schemes
to protect mission-critical applications. This application illustrates
backup over ADSL and ISDN networks. ADSL backup is accomplished by
installing an ADSL network interface module in one of the two available
slots in the NetVanta 3305. If the primary Frame Relay link is compromised,

This application requires a T1/FT1 + DSX-1 Network Interface Module
(NIM) or E1/FE1 + G.703 NIM at each location to carry digital voice and
data. The DSX-1 or G.703 interface is used to drop off digital voice to
a local PBX.
The NetVanta 3000 Series of access routers offers cost-effective connectivity between branch offices using point-to-point circuits. In this
application, a NetVanta 3205 router at the host site provides a point-topoint T1/E1 network connection to a NetVanta 3200 at the remote site.
