in high quality charter schools. Public charter
schools are tuition-free, open-enrollment public
schools that are granted the flexibility to innovate and adapt to the educational needs of
individual students while still held to strong
state academic and financial accountability
standards. With 7,500 public school students
attending 50 charter school campuses in Austin,
this area is one of the fastest-growing areas for
charter schools. Austin public charter schools
have a variety of missions ranging from collegeprep and STEM academies to dropout recovery
and specialized education for students in residential treatment centers. Great charter options

that made possible all the new or newly renovated campuses. Currently the district is building a football stadium and athletic complex, a
pre-kindergarten facility, and a building for the
San Marcos High School’s Phoenix program for
students on alternative schedules for graduation. The high school has been recognized by
Newsweek as one of America’s top high schools,
and SMHS received the 2012 College Readiness
Award from the Texas ACT Council for increasing the ACT assessment over the past five
years while significantly increasing the level
of achievement and college readiness. Only 170
Texas high schools accomplished this, placing
SMHS in the top 9% of all Texas high schools
recognized. San Marcos is also home to Texas
State University, and the school district partners
with the university in numerous programs to enhance the education of the community’s youth.

town, the greater Austin area is home to an
abundance of higher education institutions
both large and small. UT Austin, the hub of
the University of Texas network, is a leader
in higher education and boasts more than
52,000 enrolled students. Texas State University, located just a short drive south on
I-35 in San Marcos, enrolls more than 35,500
students.
The greater Austin area is also home to
smaller, private institutions, such as Huston-Tillotson University and Southwestern
University, both affiliated with the United
Methodist Church, and St. Edward’s University, a Catholic liberal arts college. Austin
Community College has eight campuses in
the greater Austin area, making the school
one of the largest community colleges in
the nation. Large or small, public or private,
four–year or two–year, the greater Austin
area affords prospective students an array of
options for higher education institutions.
ResponsiveEd works together with parents,
students, a dedicated teaching staff, and the
community to create educational environments which celebrate learning, respect individual differences, build character, and instill
lifelong core values. By August 2014, RES will
have six charter campuses in the Austin area
including Founders Classical Academy (Leander), the college-prep focused Vista Academy,
the dropout recovery–focused Premier High
Schools of North & South Austin, and the
only two Austin ISD-ResponsiveEd in-district
charters, Premier at Lanier and Travis.

have consistently earned U.S. Department of
Education Blue Ribbon awards, the region also
contains more than 100 private schools for

The Education Progress Report, now in its 10th year of publication, is developed and
issued annually by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce’s Education Progress Report
Task Force. Eleven Central Texas school districts and their local chambers of commerce
and economic development boards participated this year. The report focuses on high
school graduation, college and career readiness, and college enrollment rates, which are
closely tied to the workforce talent and, in turn, economic development in the region. It
also serves as a tool for the community to track and assess school district performance
trends. Additional indicators in the report give a comprehensive view of how the district is
performing overall and provides further insight as to predicting success for a future cohort
of students leading up to high school.
