Welcome from the ESSM
dear Congress Participants, dear Colleagues and friends,
hartmut Porst
andrea Salonia
Welcome to Milano, welcome to the 14th Congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine.
it is a pleasure and an honour to have you as our guests and to share with you a very attractive
and exciting scientific program over the next 3 1/2 days. both the scientific and the educational
committee of ESSM have worked very hard for many months to finalise this ambitious congress
program. We are very sure that you will both enjoy this congress and see your scientific and clinical work in your daily practice benefit from the new scientific content. in this context i would
like to express my gratitude, from the bottom of my heart, to all colleagues in the various committees of ESSM who were directly involved and contributed actively to ensure this congress is a
complete success. My very special thanks are given to the chairs of the two committees very
deeply involved in preparing this congress, the Scientific and Educational Committees.
as you may have already recognized, this congress touches nearly all fields of Sexual Medicine,
extending from premature ejaculation to hot topics in hormonal replacement therapy of both
genders, from the state of the art management of priapism to the most recent update in hPV
management and vaccination, from breast cancer and its impact on women's sexuality to issues
in the elderly. i am very positive that everybody will find a special topic of interest during their stay.
The variety of the topics will be presented in many round-tables, state of the art lectures, podium
and poster sessions by renowned experts witnessing the broad spectrum of Sexual Medicine and
enabling each congress participant to put together a very individual congress program of interest.
for those who are attending the ESSM annual congress for the first time and would like to have
a grounding in Sexual Medicine, there is also a 3 day educational program, called the abC Master Courses in Sexual Medicine, that was put together for "beginners" to learn the basics in Sexual Medicine. but without any doubt this educational program is also an unique opportunity for
those who would like to refresh their knowledge in the special fields of Sexual Medicine. Take your
chance and make a selection of your choice for the future benefit of your patients.
The congress city Milan is a lively and dynamic city. built on the design and fashion industries,
it has long been considered the economic capital of italy. Today, Milan represents the largest
metropolitan area in italy and the sixth largest in Europe, with over six million inhabitants, making
it an important commercial hub and industrial centre within the EU and on the international
scene; as well as the largest italian centre for trade services, fashion, publishing and manufacturing. Milan is also home to the Stock Exchange and Europe's largest university and trade fair,
publishing and television centres. Milan also has magnificent palaces and ancient churches,
museums and art galleries, cinemas, theatres, shops and restaurants that make the city the
ideal place to enjoy the more unique and valuable masterpieces of italian art and to appreciate
its lively and Christmas atmosphere.
Last, but not least, i would like to express my gratitude to all of our sponsors and exhibitors,
especially to our major sponsor Eli Lilly and Company, who continue to be faithful and loyal to
ESSM guaranteeing that ESSM can continue with its ambitious scientific and educational work
in Sexual Medicine.
Enjoy this congress and spend a memorable time with us here in pre-Christmas Milano.

The scientific program is structured according to days. Per
day it is structured by time and room. All presenters are
listed by name and the title of their presentation.
The abstract book is structured by session format. The listing
starts with the podium session followed by the highlighted
poster sessions. Hereafter the poster presentations are listed
according to topics.
Master Lectures
dealing with surgery, hormonal replacement therapies in women and men, STDs and gender identity disorders. Moreover,
as a clear cut innovation, ESSM has added a new 3-day Master Course on the ABC of Sexual Medicine to the European
Continuing Medical Education opportunity for specialists in
the field. The ABC Master Course – true pride of ESSM – will
incorporate endocrinological, urological, surgical, gynaecological, psychological and other diagnostically and therapeutically aspects in Sexual Medicine in order to cater for both
practitioners and trainees.
Each 30 minutes lecture will be given by a distinguished and
renowned expert and will be devoted to a specific topic of
major interest.
Round Tables
These sessions will usually last 60 to 90 minutes. They will
focus on a particular topic and present the very latest data
related to it. The round table will include a maximum of four
papers and time for discussion.
Debate
The ISSM ESSM debate lasts for 60 minutes and is designed
to cover controversial issues of a particular topic. The debate
starts with a 20 minutes lecture followed by a discussion of
respective opponents on the arguments proposed. Comments,
arguments, and questions from the floor are welcome during
the discussion.
Live Surgery
Live surgery was the top request for future ESSM congresses
in the delegate feedback. Having this in mind, ESSM has thus
included a 4-hours Live Surgery session across the main program of the 14th annual congress. The session is scheduled
for December 4th, Sunday morning. In order to make the session more useful and exciting, the ESSM decided to dedicate
it to 4 relatively young surgeons with a good profile in the field
of andrological surgery, with top international experts at their
side, demonstrating cutting edge techniques and new tricks
in a lively format. The use of multiple cases and experienced
chairpersons will ensure interactive learning without unnecessary gaps. The surgery will be broadcasted live from the Department of Urology of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan.
Educational Courses
These 90 minutes sessions present a detailed account of a
chosen topic. Courses are designed to provide learning experiences that actively involve participants and will include
an opportunity for informal exchange with the faculty. Attendees will be given the possibility to interact actively via a voting
system with the faculty of the session.
ABC Master Course
Video Surgery Course
The ESSM Scientific Committee along with the Educational
Committee continues to enthusiastically work with the specific aim to eventually improve the cultural and educational
proposal during the various sessions of the annual congress.
In this context, the 14th ESSM annual congress may propose
up to 10 Instructional Courses with the highest level of scientific, rigor and European top experts in the different fields,
The Video surgery Course will last 90 minutes, each video
has an average duration of 10 minutes. A panel of selected
experts will present surgical videos showing different techniques and approaches and will discuss the details with
the participants.

Podium Sessions
CME Accreditation
Podium sessions will present the best abstracts accepted for
the Congress by the Scientific Committee and will focus on
their specific topics presenting the very latest findings in this
field. The sessions will last 30 to 90 minutes. Presentations
are limited to 3 minutes followed by 2 minutes of discussion
The 14th Congress of the European Society for Sexual Medicine is accredited by the European Accreditation Council for
Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is
an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists
(UEMS), www.uems.net.
Highlighted Poster Tours
Each medical specialist should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity. Full
congress days count for 6 credits, half congress days for
3 credits. Thus a maximum of 15 European CME credits can
be obtained.
Authors were invited to submit abstracts on their latest research findings or important ongoing research. The highlighted poster tours were selected by the Scientific Committee
based on a review of all abstract submissions. The most interesting posters are grouped by topic and presented in a
30-minute moderated tour. Each tour will consist of a maximum of 8 posters in the same general field and will take place
during the coffee breaks on Friday and Saturday.
EACCME credits are recognized by the American Medical
Association towards the Physician’s Recognition Award (PRA).
To convert AECCME credit to AMA PRA category 1 credit, the
AMA may be contacted.
In order to obtain CME credits, we kindly ask the delegates
to complete the evaluation form enclosed in the congress
bag. Please hand in your form at the ESSM booth in the exhibition hall, the certificate (UEMS) will be distributed there.
Symposia in National Language

The Martinitt
The “Martinitt" orphanage in Milan has been a part of the city's history since the Renaissance. Its foundation dates from the height
of the Renaissance. According to recent studies, it seems that the orphanage was founded in the year 1532, when Duke Francesco
Sforza II summoned the Venetian nobleman Gerolamo Emiliani, who had already founded another orphanage in the North of
Italy. Few years after the foundation, the very same men moved the orphanage to a bigger house. The church of San Martino was
built near the new house, and the children living at the orphanage took the name of Martinitt, based on the nearby church.
Since the beginning, at the orphanage, great attention was given to education: the Martinitt learned to read and write, they attended music lessons and sang in the choir. Orphans were also taught the fundamentals of these crafts that allowed children, after
leaving the institution, to support themselves with the fruits of their labour.
During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the institution had a great reputation and the growing number of orphans was
matched with an increase in donations, bequests and inheritance devolved to the institution from the noble and wealthy of the city.
During the nineteenth century, new courses of study were introduced and the orphans began to attend apprenticeships at external workshops. At that time the glorious “Banda dei Martinitt” was founded too. This band is still known and active today. If at
the beginning of its history the band was composed of boys living at the institute, the band is now composed of talented young
professional musicians with national and international curricula.
The “Banda dei Martinitt” performs during main events taking place in Milan (like New Year's concert and the parade for the
celebration of the liberation on April, 25th), is part of various prestigious national venues (including television programs and
feature films) and international events (unforgotten is still the band's 1994 meeting in Monte Carlo). Today, the huge building
complex of Martinitt is ready to become the prestigious seat of a university campus.

Take Your Chance –
Become a Member of ESSM, Now !
n ESSM offers its members a permanently updated web-site
with different forums and a monthly update of the whole
scientific literature of Sexual Medicine, Andrology and
related medical disciplines.
Seize the day, or in Latin Carpe diem and become a member of
ESSM now, to take all the advantages and benefits of ESSM
membership.
There are two levels of ESSM membership available:
n ESSM provides its members quarterly newsletter, ESSM
Today which features the most recent news in the field of
Sexual Medicine and focuses on key topics of interest to
physicians in the field. It is intended that the ESSM Today
Newsletter will also be translated into the most important
European languages.
nAt present under the leadership of ESSM a European
Curriculum for Sexual Medicine is being developed together
with other medical disciplines and the Union Européene Des
Médicines Spécialistes (UEMS). This will ultimately lead,
we hope, to an examination in the field of Sexual Medicine
which in turn will lead to a European Qualification for Sexual
Medicine.
n Since 2007 ESSM has offered interested ESSM members
the participation in a two week structured course of the European School of Sexual Medicine. This course is organized
each year in July in Oxford (UK) by John Dean, the ESSM
director for Education.
nBesides this structured course ESSM offers at its annual
congresses both instructional courses related to topics of
interest in Sexual Medicine and Master Courses covering
the key contents of the ESSM educational program.
n ESSM provides to its members both research grants and
fellowship supports, either on individual application and
after approval by the ESSM Scientific Committee.

PROGRAMME ADJOURNMENT
Is it really that simple?
Why is it important to closely look into evolutionary
as well as emotional programmes to better
understand human sexuality?
What is the evidence mirroring current
sexual habits?
When sexual life is impaired, treatment options
should focus on restoring quality of life for
concerned patients and partners. How can this
treatment goal be reached?
This Lilly Satellite Symposium will deal with facets
of human sexuality and provide answers to these
questions.
On behalf of the distinguished faculty and the Lilly
European Medical Urology Team, we very much
look forward to welcoming you in Milan.
