EDITORIAL POLICY
1. To inform members of the Chapter
and Institute goals and activities
directed toward these goals;
2. To inform members of the Chapter
and Regional activities, Board
actions; and
3. To provide a forum for all
members.

As the West Region Conference rapidly approaches, one is reminded
of the wonderful opportunity for CSI members to come together and
get re-energized by all that CSI represents, on local, regional, and
national levels. There is no other CSI gathering as intense as a
Regional Conference. With the beautiful historical Hayes Mansion as
a backdrop, the conference offers opportunities to strengthen chapter
leadership, to share and exchange ideas with region-wide members,
and to bend an ear with a CSI National representative. Along with
the expanded trade show, the tangible professional development
sessions, the fun times, the Leadership training, and commemorative
Award ceremony, the strength and validity of CSI is reinforced.
In addition to the relevant professional development sessions, the
numerous networking opportunities, and the CSI Leadership training,
this year the Regional Conference is offering a little twist from past
conferences, starting with exercise. Silicon Valley Chapter’s Maia
Gendreau, who’s an architect by day and a yoga instructor by night, will
be leading flexibility classes in the morning. (Tidbit: the Hayes Mansion
has a fully furnished exercise room, to cater to FBI requirements).
The trade show has been expanded to two days, to accommodate
the variations in attendees’ daytime and evening schedules. Lastly,
Saturday’s lunch has been transformed into a business lunch for
the West Region Business Meeting, allowing maximum Leadership
training time in the morning.
Don’t miss this opportunity to expand your CSI leadership horizons.
Take advantage of these three days to grow your CSI network, to
meet influential members, and to strengthen your belief in CSI.

California. At $125 for non-members and $100 for members,
it can save hours of searching for locally-made materials for
your projects.
John Wagner and Bill Curtis
And now, by popular demand, two new discounts are
available. If you were an Early Adopter of the Database and
have your copy of the 2005 version, dig it out. It includes a

And if you are a student your price is $25, member or not.

METAL STAIR DESIGN
By Kitty Myers
A caution when including metal stairs on your project:
On one project, the metal stairs were designated as bidder design
and specified as manufactured stairs. The structural engineer
designed and detailed some of the stairs. This created confusion on
the part of the steel fabricator who got the contract for the stairs.
Kitty Myers
The fabricator hadn’t counted on designing the stairs because
some of the work was already done on the drawings (even though
the specs were clear that it was bidder design). In addition, the
structural engineer (our consultant) designed the steel channel with
too narrow a leg on the channel for the baluster to fit and be welded
around completely.
One more thing to coordinate with consultants!
If we want certain elements to be a certain size visually, it is
necessary to show that size on the drawings for the fabricator to
work with. However, it is best to avoid too much detail or partial
design, which splits the responsibility and creates confusion on the
part of the Contractor, as well as claims for a change order.

Knowledge for Creating and Sustaining the Built Environment
CSI membership is composed of a cross-section of the construction industry - architect, engineers, contractors,
developers, manufacturers, suppliers and representatives from allied industries. Chapter activities reflect the
unbiased concerns of the entire industry - not one section of it. Members through the Chapter, Region and
Institute have the opportunity to contribute their views and experience to the improvement of specifications and
other contract documents.
