Campus Communicator NOVEMBER • 2014 Scholarship Help for Technology Students Students entering technical programs, including those that lead to jobs in the oil and gas industry, can take advantage of more than $150,000 in scholarships at WVNCC. “We want students to know they can apply for a scholarship to enter the Petroleum Technology program at Northern, for example, and get their tuition and fees covered,” President Olshinsky said. “Northern has benefitted from the generosity of several businesses that have donated funds for scholarships, and those funds in many cases have been matched by the state of West Virginia.” Scholarship funds are available for the following majors: Petroleum Technology, Mechatronics, Allied Health, Culinary Arts, Computer Information Technology and Welding TechnologyBoard of Governors option. To learn more about these scholarships, contact Kelly Dlesk, financial aid counselor, at 304-214-8842, or go online to www.wvncc.edu and click on Offices/ Services to access financial aid and scholarship details. Scholarship funds have been assembled because of the following donations to the WVNCC Foundation: · Noble Energy, for students entering petroleum related fields, total of $72,000 with state match. · Chevron Fund through the Community Foundation for the Upper Ohio Valley, for Marshall County high school seniors entering technical fields, $18,240 with state match. · EQT Foundation, $24,000 for purchase of virtual welders to take to middle and high schools in Wetzel County to demonstrate the concept of welding. · Ken Dennis Fund through the Community Foundation for the Upper Ohio Valley, $19,438 with state match to support students from Belmont County in Ohio and Ohio County in West Virginia to participate in technical programs. · An anonymous $10,000 donation, matched by the state, to benefit high school seniors taking technology classes, including Allied Health. Students Warm the Hearts of Others Students and faculty at West Virginia Northern have embarked on projects that will benefit those in need of assistance during the cold winter months in the Wheeling area. Wheeling campus Nursing students and the Medical Assisting students each decorated a Christmas tree with gloves for winter (instead of ornaments) to be given to the Domestic Violence shelter and the Children’s Home of Wheeling. The trees are located on the third floors of the Education Center and B&O Building. The SCARSI Club (Students Caring About Regional Social Issues) is sponsoring a blanket donation drive through Dec. 5. All blankets that are donated must be new. The new blankets then will be distributed to two local agencies: The Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless and the Youth Services System Winter Freeze Shelter. Drop-off locations are in the Student Activities Department in the Student Union on the Wheeling campus or Joyce Britt’s office, Room 317, B&O Building. Britt, faculty club advisor, said, “Please help us to help others during this winter season.” Wheeling Ca mpus University. She holds a bachelor of arts degree from Wheeling College and an associate in applied science from WVNCC. Joyce Britt Faculty Member Named Outstanding Contributor A Northern faculty member has been honored as the institution’s outstanding contributor to community college education for 2014-15. Joyce Britt, an instructor in psychology and human services, received the award last month at the annual conference of the West Virginia Community College Association and the West Virginia Association of Developmental Education. The conference was hosted by WVU-Parkersburg and held at the Blennerhassett Hotel downtown. From excellence in the classroom to enthusiastic engagement with social issues, the outstanding contributor for this year at Northern strives to make her academic credentials come alive for students and staff. Joyce has been an adjunct faculty member at Northern since 2005, and started teaching full-time in January 2012. She has 26 years of professional experience in the social service field and has a master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from West Virginia During the past year, Joyce created, implemented and continues to advise a new student club, Students Caring About Regional Social Issues. She has served on various community committees focused on social issues and has been a presenter at local and state conferences. This year, she presented a College-wide program for administrators, faculty, staff and students at WVNCC titled, “Is It Flirting or Sexual Harassment?” Recently, she gave a program on how to deal with stress. In addition, Joyce was the first recipient of an award to be given annually to recognize outstanding contributions by full-time faculty at Northern. Emeritus faculty member Thomas R. Danford made an initial contribution to create the “Danford Faculty Award Fund” through the WVNCC Foundation. He suggested the $100 award be presented to a deserving faculty member at the College’s annual fall recognition luncheon. Joyce is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and Who’s Who Among American Junior College Students and is a licensed social worker in both West Virginia and Ohio. She and her husband, Don, have been married for 35 years. They have two adult children who are married, and one grandchild. Presidental Search The top three finalists being considered for the presidency at West Virginia Northern all were on WVNCC campuses earlier this month. Peggy Carmichael, chief human resources officer for the College who coordinated the visits, said the three finalists are Dr. John Crooks, associate provost of Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio; Dr. Catherine Gatewood-Keim, vice president of academic affairs of Bay College, Escanaba, Mich.; and Dr. Vicki Riley, vice president of academic affairs of West Virginia Northern Community College, Wheeling. Carmichael said the presidential search committee has been meeting since September but the process began earlier in the year when the College’s current president, Dr. Martin J. Olshinsky, announced he would retire effective Jan. 5, 2015. The three candidates were on Northern’s Wheeling, Weirton and New Martinsville campuses and met with the search committee members, Board of Governors, administrators, state Community and Technical College Council members, faculty, staff, alumni, students and community members. The candidates’ resumes have been posted on the WVNCC Presidential Search webpage http://www.wvncc. edu/offices-and-services/presidentialsearch/4592 along with additional information about the search. rs! e d n i m Re e c i f f ’s O for the r a r t s i Reg l Grades ter Fina 14 semes n Fall 20 no later tha e are du 5 1 . c e!
