PRESENTING CHICAGO'S TOP JAZZ
A R T I S T S I N A L I V E LY AT M O S P H E R E .
UPCOMING SHOWS INCLUDE:
2/ 7: Keefe Jackson
Keefe Jackson is a saxophonist/clarinettist/composer. He
performs in groups such as the Fast Citizens, Chicago Luzern Exchange, and Keefe Jackson's Project Project. His
recordings are available on Delmark Records, the oldest
independent jazz and blues record label in the USA.
2 /14 : Mike Re e d,
M a t t S c h n e i d e r, J e b B i s h o p
Drummer Mike Reed will be introducing a brand new
group featuring Matt Schneider on guitar and Jeb Bishop on trombone. In a recent interview with the Chicago
Reader, he describes the group as such: "I'm trying to
do something where there's no bass. I'm really trying to
whittle down the amount of stuff we need to bring. It's really about a rhythmic flexibility. The horn players can be in
front but they can also be part of the rhythm section, sort
of like a brass band would, or even like a Dixieland band.
That's the idea but obviously with more contemporary
ideas in it as well."
Masters of their instruments and wizards of improvisation, the Gunnelpumpers are a unique ensemble that
creates compelling worlds of sound from seemingly
nothing. The brainchild of bassist Doug Johnson, they are
best described by the subtitle on the band's Myspace
page: music by accident. Other band members include
bassist Mathew Golombisky, percussionists Randy Farr,
Douglas Brush and Quin Kirchner, along with guitarist
John Meyer. The group has also included a host of stellar
guest artists over the years and it is always interesting to
see who will appear for any given performance.
Halo Defect features Michael Zerang on drums and a
couple of Relax Attack regulars: Dave Rempis on saxophone and Nate McBride on E-bass. Zerang has been
a professional musician, composer, and producer since
1976, focusing extensively on improvised music, free
jazz, contemporary composition, puppet theater, experimental theater, and international musical forms. He has
collaborated with contemporary theater, dance, and
other multidisciplinary forms and has received three Joseph Jefferson Awards for Original Music Composition in
Theater in collaboration with Redmoon Theater, in 1996,
1998, and 2000.

FEBRUARY 2012
The Occidental Brothers’ blend of high-energy soukous,
rootsy Ghanian Highlife and African Jazz conjures up
sounds of the golden age of the African guitar band and
has made them favorites of music critics and fans alike,
but it’s a sound that has also seduced an audience of
listeners as diverse as the members of this band. The
group is led by guitarist Nathaniel Braddock, an instructor at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music and
twice profiled in Guitar Player Magazine. Braddock is
joined by jazz phenom Greg Ward on alto, Joshua Ramos on bass and Makaya McCraven on drums. After
playing the Pitchfork festival in 2008 and GlobalFest in
2009, the OBDBI experienced a meteoric rise: graduating from Chicago street festivals to the stages of Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the Montreal and
Vancouver Jazz Festivals in the course of a year. Tonight presents a rare opportunity to see the Occidental
Brothers in such an intimate room as The Whistler.

As a percussionist and composer, Zerang has over eighty
titles in his discography and works with an ever-widening
pool of collaborators. Michael founded and was the
artistic director of the Link's Hall Performance Series
in Chicago from 1985-1989 and has taught as a guest
artist at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in
performance technique, sound design, and sound/music
as it relates to puppetry. He has also taught rhythmic
analysis for dancers at The Dance Center of Columbia
College, Northwestern University, and MoMing Dance
and Arts Center, as well as courses in Composer—Choreographer Collaborations at Northwestern University
and music to children at The Jane Adams Hull House.
Michael Zerang currently tours and holds workshops in
improvisational music and percussion technique and
teaches private lessons in rhythmic analysis, music composition, and percussion technique.
Frank Rosaly is a drummer and composer who's been
involved in Chicago's improvisational and experimental
music community for over 10 years. "After rediscovering
the music of Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons, I became
obsessed with their music, both separately and as collaborators." says Rosaly, when asked about his Green
and Gold project. "I decided to transcribe the music from
their collaborative years together, specifically focusing on
the records The Cry and Firebirds. With such a collective
of unique voices, we are attempting to play this music,
evoking the spirit of the original music while respecting it
enough not to simply revive or recreate it. As the group
continues to explore these albums, we hope to infuse our
own ideas and sound into the great body of material given to us by Prince Lasha and Sonny Simmons."

DASTARDLY,
KENTUCKY KNIFE
FIGHT
The guys from Odd Obsession, Chicago's most eclectic video store, bring their monthly foreign film series to
The Whistler. Tonight's feature is: Mystics In Bali (Color,
1981, 85 min. / Directed by H. Tjut Djalil / Starring Ilona
Agathe Bastian and Yos Santo).
Those who claim they've seen it all are usually stopped
dead in their tracks by Mystics in Bali, the most notorious entry in the Indonesian horror genre. Often mentioned, but rarely seen, the film is best known for its most
indelible image: a woman's fanged, flying head with vital
organs still attached below the neck; however, that's
merely one of the insane visuals on display in this outrageous film.
Pretty young Cathy (Ilona Agathe Bastian), an anthropologist and student of magic arts, arrives in Bali to investigate the legend of the Leák, a local form of witchcraft. She strikes up a romantic relationship with one of
the locals, Mahendra (Yos Santo), whom she persuades
to take her into the forest one night to meet a Leák
queen. Sure enough, the wicked one appears, all cackling and long fingernails, with thunder and lightning to
boot. The wild-haired queen agrees to take on Cathy as
her disciple (leaving her scuttling, severed hand as proof
of her power), and soon the two women are romping
through the woods at night, transforming into large pigs
and snakes. However, the witch also demands blood to
sustain her powers and orders Cathy's head to detach
itself from her body. Soon the marauding head is whizzing through the village, sucking the blood and unborn
fetus (!) from a local woman before returning to its host.
Mehandra is understandly upset by Cathy's change in
behavior and brings in his Buddhist uncle for help, leading to a fiery showdown with a possessed Cathy and the
powerful Leák queen. Though it isn't particularly violent,
Mystics in Bali is rife with enough grotesque visuals to
make the most jaded viewer shake their head in disbelief.
Last year saw Dastardly take great strides, both locally
and beyond: the group embarked on four national tours,
hitting both coasts, as well as a stop at SXSW and singer-guitarist Gabe Liebowitz quit his day job as a tour
guide on a double-decker bus to run the band full time.
Their new album, Bury Me In The Country, continues

These Wonderful Evils bring fuzzed-out raga jams, taking off from Sun Araw-styled sorcery and pushing out
into the heavy-meta realms of Sound Of Confusion-era
Spacemen 3. Something in the way guitarist Zak Boerger blends folk forms with high energy improvisations and
amp-humping sweat makes us think of Trans-Love Energies. If you’re able to connect the dots from The Stooges
and MC5 through John Fahey and John Coltrane, then
this is the kind of music that has your name all over it.
