Art stolen,
heart
broken

A CHILD’S painting
has been stolen from
the Bayswater Art
Awards and Exhibition,
leaving the young artist
devastated.
Malinda Coppola issued
an online appeal saying
her 14-year-old daughter
Grace’s painting was
stolen from Maylands The
Rise, and asking people
to share the image in the
hope someone might have
spotted it.
It would’ve been nicked
in the lead-up to October 18,
when the gallery was open
to the public.
“What was supposed to
be a fun experience has now
been incredibly dampened
by the fact that her artwork
was in fact stolen,” Ms
Coppola says.
“Words really cannot
express how upsetting this
whole situation has been,
especially for Grace who has
worked very hard on her
piece and was really proud
of her e orts I am utterly
disgusted and disappointed
that this has happened.”

TWO heritage buildings
in Bayswater are
temporarily safe from
demolition after a
state planning panel
unexpectedly rejected
plans for a seven-storey
project.
The local development
assessment panel rejected,
four votes to one, Yolk
Property Group’s proposal
for 27 apartments at 9-11
King William Street.
Yolk director Pete Adams
concedes the decision blindsided him.
“We have been working
closely with the City of
Bayswater for over 12
months to create plans that
work with their vision to
help re-energise the street
and also to accommodate
the state’s vision to
create transit-orientated
developments near train
stations,” he said.
“Given we met all the
requests we were a bit
surprised.”
Dozens of local
protestors welcomed the
decision, however, including
federal Perth Labor MP
Alannah MacTiernan, who
admitted thinking she had
een fighting a losing attle
The decision preserves,
for now at least, two 1905
buildings, a red brick
cottage and streetfront
shop which was originally
McLeish’s Grain Store and
built by prominent builder
Henry Halliday.
Having spoken
against the proposal at
Monday’s DAP meeting,
Ms MacTiernan, formerly a
state planning minister, says
the plans should not have
gone as far as they had. She
criticised Yolk for seeking to
squeeze an extra two storeys
on the original five storey
plan by lowering ceiling
heights.
She says this should
be a wake-up call for
authorities to listen to local
communities, saying “there
was no real engagement”.
“It’s laughable...it was a
pathetic attempt at heritage
retention,” she says.

more heritage and has space
for trees.

“This is not a win, but
a step...let’s not let this
happen again.”

causing grief for neighbours,

burglaries in three weeks.
Police attended 124 Wright
Street three times in three days
this week, and it’s no secret that
some inhabitants are behind
the thieving: on one occasion
neighbours wandered through
the squat’s open door and
simply retrieved their goods
while the squatters were out.
The neighbours also fear for
the welfare of one of the group,
who’s been inhaling gas from
nicked barbecue canisters: it’s
not unusual for the smell to
hang heavy enough in the air for
assers y to get a strong whi

ambulance already enroute.
A local says the police
response to calls has been
impeccable and Vincent city
council has also been very
responsive, but the locals want
the place secured and tidied up
so squatters can’t get in.

Developments currently has
an application in front of the
council to knock the place down
and erect four three-storey
grouped dwellings.
The council refused that back
in June and Tiger appealed to the
WA state administrative tribunal.
In September it was once again
rejected, because there wasn’t
enough setback from the street.
Under new WA government
laws just brought in, owners
can demolish a property
before getting approval for
its replacement, and we hear
Tiger’s now getting quotes for
the knock-down. Until then,
the back laneway gate has
been secured in the hope of
minimising dodgy activities (it
has been a popular route for
trying to evade attention).

AFTER almost three years of nomadic
hockey games in public schools
and car parks, Perth’s Street Roller
Hockey League has found a home,
breathing new life into the Bayswater
Bowls Club.
A smooth concrete slab was laid over a
bowls green that had been damaged in a
frea storm five years ago
SRHL commissioner Eamonn Lourey
said the most important part of the
rink was lighting, which allowed teams
to train and compete at night — a
luxury they haven’t had before. The
crowdfunded rink opened on October 4,
with games running late into the evening.
Though the SRHL can be a rowdy
bunch, Mr Lourey said the bowls club
members “absolutely love us, and are
shocked that our generation can be so
thankful and polite”.
And they have good reason to feel this
way. Not long ago, the bowls club was
struggling financially, an un er threat of
eing ta en over for soccer fiel s
ith the financial su ort of
L
members (and a new boom in the demand
for beer and Pasito), the Bayswater Bowls
is safe again.
The rink marks a new age for the
SRHL, which has grown rapidly from 10
teams to a whopping 89.
“It’s an organised sport for

“The league has struck a chord with the
youth of Perth, faciliting a change in
suburban identity and encouraging a
pride in the suburbs that its players call
home.
“Friends start a team representing
their suburb. They collectively choose a
name to go by, whip up a logo and jersey,
and bleed for their ‘burb.”
Most recently, the new rink was used
for the biannual North vs. South All Star
Weekend, in which the best -and worstplayers from each side of the river met to
reignite an age-old rivalry.
And as for the future of the league?
“I plan on building a second SRHL
rink south of the river sometime in the
next year,” says Mr Lourey, who intends
to partner with more suburban bowling
clubs to ensure an ongoing mutual
success.

above and beyond in helping out a
homeless woman and her three kids
sleeping in Bardon Park in Maylands.
In this week’s “councillor’s column”
published in the council newsletter,
Michelle Sutherland tells the tale of

came across the mum and her kids aged
6, 9 and 13 sleeping in their car.
“After speaking with the woman who
was crying and distressed because she
lost her car keys, Mr Petrovic posted a
Facebook request for assistance on Perth
Beer Economy,” Cr Sutherland reports.

A lot of our pubs around town are
remnants of the gold rush era: the
Northbridge Hotel was built by a father
and son team who found a huge “gold
eagle” nugget and invested it into the
pub.
The group’s setting out from Banks
Reserve on November 1 at 9.30am for a
two-and-a-half-hour leisurely ride, with
frequent stops to chat history. It’s all free

The Bayswater councillor recently
won support for a working committee to
investigate the creation of a multi-million
dollar sustainability centre at the A-class
reserve in Noranda.
“Aside from the education and
cultural enefits that a centre woul
bring, I think it could become a popular
eco-tourism site,” she says.
“Eco-tourism is a burgeoning industry
in Australia and I think, if done right,

Plans to create a sustainability centre
stretch back to 2002, when the initial
project was scoped out.
In the 2011/12 budget, funds were
allocated for the development of a
concept plan for a sustainability centre at
Lightning Park.
The concept plan was developed by
o cers in con unction with the resi ent
of the Friends of Lightning Swamp and
north ward councillors.
The estimated cost was $2.4 million
and the project ground to a halt with
councillors wanting more detail on
ongoing costs before committing to the
ambitious plan.
At the time, FOLS president John
Williams said the council didn’t
understand the “vision” for the centre
and failed to allocate a brass razoo in its
2013/14 budget for it.

This year the RPAS turns 15,
a celebration marked with its
annual exhibition in their park
premises.
“With many other artist
collectives now closed, it could
be the second oldest artistsrun studio in Perth,” founding
member Graham Hay says.
Temporary walls have been
erected and the studio spruced
up with a fresh coat of paint for
the Epochs exhibition, Friday
November 6–8, 10am–5pm at 176
Fitzgerald Street, East Perth.
Artists park it
Melbourne Cup Day is just around the corner and a limited number of tickets are
still available at the Oxford Hotel. Offering a two course menu at $60 per person,

Instruments from around the
world gave the album a world
music avour, which hit a cor
in 1995, and it stayed in the top
20 for more than 18 weeks–and
went platinum.
The deep pumping sounds
add to the edginess of lyrics
that are at times spiritual —
and accompanied by Perth
artist Robert Buratti’s esoteric
paintings and videos they’ll be
raised to another plane for the
tour. “I channelled unconscious
images that came to me when
listening to the music,” he says.
“It lends…importance and
depth, it would be a shame if it

studio some years back and
the pair formed a friendship
over music, art and Thelema,
a philosophy and religion
developed in the early 1900s by
Aleister Crowley.
Buratti’s art is liberally
mixed with Thelema’s Egyptian
iconography, particularly a
pyramid topped with the eye of
the god Horus (which is also on
the US dollar note).
The Edges of Twilight cover
featured sculptor William
Westmore’s Fallen Angel, and
Buratti has drawn on this in
12 artworks for the album’s 12
songs. And also tossed a bit
of Hinduism into the overtly
mediaeval tombstone imagery in
his vibrant works.
Video of the artworks will
accompany the songs on the
theatre’s big screen.
Touring Canada to rave
reviews The Tea Party hits Aussie
shores next month, and Buratti

out my rock star dreams,” the

T
HE word “gay” has two
meanings: to be happy,
or to be homosexual
(or any -sexual that doesn’t
involve just man ‘n woman).
From next week, both states
of being will be celebrated
across Perth at PrideFEST with
two weeks of performances by
the local lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, intersex and queer
(LGBTIQ) community.
The opening event “Happy
Pride”, on November 6, is a
first for the festival since it was
founded 25 years ago by Pride
WA.
The event is an outdoor
party starting from 6pm, at
the James Place Amphitheatre
in Northbridge, and will give
audiences a sneak peak of
upcoming shows.
Live entertainment
Shows on the night include
live entertainment from music
talent Randa and the Soul
Kingdom, DJ Roski and The
Tommyhawks.
Pride WA president Andrew
Barker, who came out as gay 10
years ago at the age of 39, says
the two-week festival is not just
fun for everyone, but important
for the LGBTIQ community to
feel comfortable in public.
“For example, if two guys are
walking down the street holding
hands, I would bet any money
they would get at least one gibe
from one end of Murray Street to
the other,” Mr Barker says.

everywhere and that’s why it’s
so important that Pride exists,
and for the LGBTIQ community
to be visible in public.”
He says the festival has been
instrumental in making his
community feel more accepted
than ever, and earmarked a
lack of marriage equality as the
main issue for the group going
forward.
When the festival started
more than two decades ago,
Pride WA was mainly an
advocacy group standing for
equality and the human rights of
the LGBTIQ community, fighting
laws that actively discriminated
against them.
Now, as attitudes have
improved, and with legal
equality achieved (except for
marriage equality) Mr Barker
says it’s become increasingly
about arts and culture—and
having fun.
Tickets
Happy Pride ($10 per person
via the website or $15 at the
door) is at the James Street
Amphitheatre in Northbridge.
More than 550 people
had bought tickets when the
Voice went to print. Pride WA
members enter free before 8pm.
Some other events are free.
The festival ends on
November 22, with the closing
“25th anniversary Pride” parade
on November 21, from 8pm.
