A tall glass of icy lemonade, a hammock, and a stack
of library books are all you need for a relaxing summer
vacation. Whatcom County Library System has everything
you need – from frivolous beach reads, gripping thrillers,
and insightful memoirs to mouth-watering cookbooks
and lusciously illustrated travel guides. Our staff have
been boning up in the art of “reader’s conversations” –
we can talk books all day long, and we love to do it! Tell
us what you’ve enjoyed in the past, and we can suggest
new titles to you. We can also point you in the direction
of fantastic books for the children and teens in your life.
There are lots of books for young people that adults will
love too. Why not read one aloud with the entire family?
Or play an audiobook during a long car trip?
The cornerstone of the library’s 5-year strategic plan
is READING because we believe that it’s important to
celebrate reading at every opportunity. Another facet
of our plan is ENGAGEMENT—we want to engage with
everyone in Whatcom County and make sure that every
household has a library card, and uses it often. We’re
looking to increase ACCESS to library services, which is
why we spruced up our library website, www.wcls.org.
We’re also looking at ways we can adjust our open hours
so we can be open when you’re ready to visit…stay tuned
for developments. Finally, we see DILIGENT STEWARDSHIP
as the key to spending your tax dollars wisely.
Our strategic plan spells out READ – so that’s your summer
reminder. Stock up at your nearest library!

On Your Mark, Get Set…READ!
Summer Reading for Preschoolers, Kids and Teens
By Thom Barthelmess,
Youth Services Manager
Here at the Whatcom County Library
System, we believe that the best
reward for reading is more reading. The
particular joys of getting lost in a book,
or finding yourself in one; the wonder
that comes from discovering the
breadth of the wide world, or drilling
down into the glorious minutiae of
a precise topic; the gratification of
sharing a favorite with a friend, or
keeping a story all to yourself; these
are the pleasures of reading. And this
summer we have a Summer Reading
Program designed specifically to
celebrate the simple truth that reading
is its own reward.
This summer we’ve distilled everything
down to three simple steps for
preschoolers, kids and teens:
Set your reading goal. Fast or slow,
deep or cursory, casual or committed,
all of us read a little differently, and
it’s all good. You decide how much
reading you want to do this summer.
Choose a book a week. Choose 20
minutes a day. Set your sights on one
of the Lord of the Rings behemoths and
nothing else. The point is that you get
to set your own goal, according to your
own needs and desires. At the library,
your reading belongs to you.
Read. Really. That’s it. Dedicate some
time this summer to the joys of
reading, however it fits into your plans.
Read in the car. Read by the pool. Read
under the porch. Read at Grandma’s.
Make an appointment with a good
book and put it on your calendar.
Squeeze it into the little breaks
between your activities. Just remember
that the library has books about anyand everything; whatever you’re up
to this summer, your pursuits will be
enhanced and enriched by reading
around and about them.
Redeem. Once you’ve met your
reading goal, come back to the library
and choose a book. To keep. Forever.
We’ve got an amazing assortment of
books to choose from, brand new and
classic titles, board books, dystopian
adventures, graphic novels, beginning
readers, that book where the teen dies,
any and all of them available for your
selection.* And if you want to rework
your goal a little in retrospect, we’re
happy to talk to you about that, too.
Just to keep things interesting, we’ve
got events happening at all of our
locations, and on the bookmobile, all
summer long. Our children’s and teen
librarians have put lots of time and
energy into designing a summer of fun,
just for you. Check this program guide
and your local library for details about
what’s happening close to home, and
take a trip to a library across the county
to try something new.
*This summer we offer our special
thanks to the Whatcom County Library
Foundation and to the Friends of
the Library groups of all ten library
locations and the Bookmobile, for
generously underwriting our reward
book bank. We’re so pleased and proud
to be able to offer top quality books to
the young people of Whatcom County,
and we couldn’t have done it without
the Foundation’s and Friends’ generous
support. Every library will have some
sort of event or activity to express our
appreciation. We hope you’ll help us
say, “Thank you!”

Using Your Library
Access more than
How Long Can I Keep Things?
In general, you can keep library materials
for three weeks, but double check your
check-out receipt to be sure. High-demand
materials and DVDs typically have a twoweek borrowing period.
Most items can be renewed twice if no one
else is waiting for them.
Where Do I Return Them?
Do I Need a Library Card?
You don’t need a library card to participate
in our classes and events, but a WCLS
library card does give you access to the
vast collection shared between our 10
branches and bookmobile: hundreds of
thousands of books, audiobooks, DVDs
and CDs.
Your library card also gives you access
to all of our digital services. You can use
it to checkout eBooks and audiobooks,
to download or stream free music, learn
languages, research genealogy and local
history, access magazines, journals and
almanacs online, or even learn how to
repair cars.
We’ve partnered with Bellingham Public
Library, so your WCLS card works at all
Bellingham Library locations too. We are
also a member of the Whatcom Libraries
Collaborate (WLC) program. Once you have
a WCLS card, you can apply for and receive
a library card at any of the following WLC
libraries: Bellingham Technical College,
Northwest Indian College, Western
Washington University, and Whatcom
Community College.
How Do I Get a Library Card?
You can apply for a card online (wcls.org/
get-a-library-card) or at any of our library
locations, including our bookmobile.
Online applications are generally
processed within one business day. We
will email your new account number to
you, giving you full access to our digital
services, while your new library card is
being sent to you by mail. If you apply in
person at one of our libraries, your card
will be issued to you instantly and you’ll
have full access to all of our materials and
online digital services immediately. Just
remember to bring your photo ID with you!

June, July, August 2016
We know you’re busy, so we’ve made it
easy to return your library materials to ANY
public or academic library or book return
in Whatcom County, regardless of where
you borrowed them. We’ve also put book
returns at convenient places you already
go, like local grocery stores and churches.
Go to wcls.org/locations-hours for the
full list of locations to return your library
materials.
40,000
eBooks and

No matter where
summer takes you,
you can download our
eBooks & eAudiobooks
anywhere!

What if I Keep Things Past Their Due
Date?
KIDS &
TEEN
BOOKS
TOO
There are no late fees on children’s or teen
materials. For adult materials there is a
two day grace period after which you’ll be
charged $0.25 per day, with a maximum
fee of $10. If you reserve a book, but don’t
pick it up, you’ll be charged $0.50.
You can also subscribe to Library Elf to get
reminders by email or text. Keep track of
what’s due, overdue, and ready for pick up.
Register at www.libraryelf.org. It's free!
Can't Find What You Want?
You can place a hold on any item in our
collection through your online account,
by phone, or at any of our libraries. And if
what you want isn’t in our collection yet,
you can request it. We’ll either buy it and
add it to our collection or borrow it from
another library just for you! Talk to any of
our librarians or visit wcls.org/can’t-find-it
to place a request.

FOR
SUMMER READING 2016
IT’S NOT JUST FOR KIDS!
Visit your local library to sign up, choose a Book Bingo card, and spend
your summer reading great books. Share a photo of what you’re reading
via Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook: #wclsbookbingo, @wclslibraries, and
facebook.com/wclslibraries.
ADULTS
Keep track of your summer reads on the Adult Book Bingo card. When you get a bingo or
blackout with titles of the books you’ve read, show it to any of our library staff to be entered
into the grand prize drawing. Every bingo counts as 1 entry. Get a blackout by completing all
25 squares and receive 5 entries towards the grand prize drawing.
TEENS & KIDS
You decide your goal. You can choose to read a set number of books, number of days, or
number of minutes. Your goal could be to get a bingo or blackout, but if your goal doesn’t
involve getting a bingo or blackout, just use the Book Bingo card for reading inspiration and
fun. When you reach your goal, you’ll receive your choice of a Summer Reading Reward Book.
EARLY YEARS
Spend your summer reading great books and doing Early Literacy activities. Feel free to make
up your own activities using the Early Learning practices listed on the back of the Book Bingo
card for Early Learners. When you complete any five or more Early Literacy activities, you’ll
receive your choice of a Summer Reading Reward Book!

Branch Out 2016
Whatcom County Library Foundation hosted the 5th Annual Branch Out

titles, engaging folks with enticing summaries. There was even a mini-library set
up so that guests could check out books on site. This addition proved to be very
popular, as more than118 titles were checked out that evening!
