BIG SKY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL RELEASE - OCTOBER 8, 2007
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK, OCT. 8
O FFENSE - T IM T OONE , WR, W EBER ST ATE
Toone, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore from Peoria, Ariz., tied
a school record with four receiving touchdowns in Weber State’s
26-7 victory over Sacramento State. Toone caught six passes
overall for 128 yards as the Wildcats earned their first victory of
the season. Toone opened the scoring with a 15-yard TD reception
with 2:02 to play in the first quarter. With one second left in the
first quarter, Toone caught a 50-yard scoring strike from sophomore QB Cameron Higgins. Toone added an 18-yard touchdown
with 10:17 to play in the third quarter, and a 22-yard scoring reception with 4:38 to play in the third, putting the Wildcats ahead
26-7. In Weber State’s first four games of the regular season, he had three catches for
78 yards with one touchdown. Toone became the first player to catch four TD passes in a
game since tight end Gerald Wilcox hauled in four against Southern Utah in 1988.
D EFENSE - B OBBY D ALY , LB, M ONTANA ST ATE
Daly, a 6-1, 215-pound junior from Helena, Mont., tallied
a career-high 17 tackles with two sacks in the 13th-ranked
Bobcats’ 7-3 victory over Southern Utah. Daly had 11 solo
stops, and his 17 tackles tied the Big Sky single-game high
this season. Daly’s first sack came on a third-and-short in
MSU territory that forced a Thunderbird punt. He had two
third-down tackles that led to Bobcat stops. Daly’s 17 tackles was the most by a Bobcat since Kane Ioane registered
21 in a 2003 game. Daly is averaging a league-best 12 tackles per game.
S PECIAL T EAMS - D AN Z EIDMAN , P, I DAHO S TATE
Zeidman, a 6-1, 190-pound senior from El Cajon, Calif., averaged
46.6 yards on five punts with a net of 42.4 yards in Idaho State’s
26-14 conference victory over Northern Colorado. Zeidman pinned
Northern Colorado inside their own 20-yard line twice. He had a
long punt of 57 yards. Zeidman’s also averaged 69.3 yards on six
kickoffs with a touchback. Zeidman’s work forced Northern Colorado’s average starting field position to be the 19-yard line, and UNC
started four drives inside their own 10 after punts or kickoffs.

BIG SKY CONFERENCE FOOTBALL RELEASE - OCTOBER 8, 2007
AROUND THE BIG SKY
PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM
CLOSE CALLS: Montana and Northern Arizona both won Big Sky Conference games last
Saturday in dramatic fashion. Montana’s Dan Carpenter made a 34-yard field goal with
26 seconds to play to lift the top-ranked Grizzlies to a 24-23 win over Eastern Washington.
Carpenter’s game-winning field goal was set up by a spectacular 27-yard grab by Ryan
Bagley on a fourth-and-10. Carpenter’s field goal came less than two minutes after Felipe
Macias gave the Eagles the lead with a 39-yard field goal. Eastern Washington rolled up
565 yards of total offense, including 451 through the air, against UM’s defense, which entered
the game ranked sixth in the nation…Northern Arizona pulled out a dramatic 44-43 victory
over Portland State in the Rose City. Portland State’s Olaniyi Sobomehin scored on a 1-yard
pass from Brian White with six seconds left in regulation. Instead of going for the tie with an
extra point, Portland State gambled by going for two, but failed. Ironically, Northern Arizona
took a 44-37 lead when Kasseem Osheroff recovered a fumble on a botched Portland State
PAT try early in the fourth quarter, and returned it for two points.
WIDE RECEIVER SATURDAY: Saturday proved to be a huge day for Big Sky Conference
wide receivers. Eastern Washington sophomore Aaron Boyce hauled in a school record 17
catches for 232 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ loss to Montana. The 17 catches were
the fourth-most catches in league history. The record is 21 by Montana’s State’s David Pandt
against EWU in 1986. EWU’s previous record was 13. The 232 yards ranked as the thirdmost in school history...Portland State senior Tremayne Kirkland caught 14 passes for 225
yards with one touchdown in Portland State’s loss to Northern Arizona. Kirkland also had four
rushes for 20 yards, scoring one touchdown. Kirkland’s 225 receiving yards ranked as the
sixth-most in school history, and the second-most of their Big Sky era. Terry Charles had 276
receiving yards in a 1999 win over Montana. The 14 catches tied for the third-most in school
history, and are the most in their Big Sky era…Weber State’s Tim Toone matched his career
touchdown total, tying a school record with four receiving touchdowns in Weber State’s win
over Sacramento State…Idaho State senior Eddie Thompson also had a huge day in Idaho
State’s win over Northern Colorado. Thompson hauled in 10 catches for 137 yards with two
touchdowns. Thompson leads the Big Sky with 46 catches…Portland State’s Olaniyi Sobomehin, a fullback, had 10 catches for 89 yards with two touchdowns. He also averaged 4.7
yards per carry and scored one rushing touchdown.

MORE GAUDY NUMBERS: Wide receivers weren’t the only players to put up impressive
numbers last Saturday. EWU QB Matt Nichols set a school record with 37 completions against
Montana. He threw the ball 59 times and had 451 passing yards. The 451 yards was the
third-most in school history, just 35 yards shy of Todd Bernett’s record of 486 set in 1994
against Montana. Nichols threw two touchdowns and no interceptions…Portland State’s Brian
White continued his hot streak, completing 35-of-52 passes for 442 yards with four touchdowns. White has thrown for 1,542 yards with nine touchdowns in his last four games…NAU’s
Lionel Scott led the rushing attack with 172 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns. He
averaged 8.6 yards per carry, while Alex Henderson averaged 7.2 yards per carry for the
Lumberjacks, who amassed 296 yards on the ground in the win over the Vikings.

BOYCE EARNS NATIONAL HONOR
EWU sophomore wide receiver Aaron
Boyce was named the National Offensive Player of the Week by the
Sports Network. Boyce helped Eastern
Washington come within seconds of an
upset of Montana on the road with a
school-record 17 receptions for 232
yards and one touchdown in the Eagles’
24-23 loss to the Grizzlies. Boyce’s 17
catches were the fourth- most ever in a
Big Sky Conference football game. David Pandt of Montana State holds the
record with 21 in 1986 against EWU.
The 232 yards was the third best performance in Eagle history, just short of
the record of 264 by Jason Anderson
in a 1994 loss to Montana. Four EWU
players had previous caught 13 passes
in a single game. Boyce hauled in a 37yard scoring strike from quarterback
Matt Nichols in the third quarter to give
the Eagles a 17-14 lead.
AROUND THE BIG SKY
SOME D: Despite all of the offensive numbers put up last weekend, there were some outstanding defensive efforts. Montana State rode its defense to a 7-3 win over Southern Utah. The
game was played in the mud as four inches of snow melted, creating less than ideal playing
conditions. Montana State’s Kory Austin sealed the victory with an interception with 33 seconds
to play in the end zone. Montana State’s defense has allowed just two touchdowns in the last
four games, all MSU victories. The Bobcats have 10 interceptions this season, second in the
Big Sky. The last time Montana State won a game while scoring in single-digits was in 1972,
when the Bobcats beat Weber State 9-3 in Ogden. It was MSU’s first win when scoring as few
as seven points since 1955, when the Bobcats opened the season with a 7-6 win over Lewis
and Clark. The 10 total points the teams combined for Saturday marked the lowest output in
the history of Sales/Bobcat Stadium…Idaho State and Weber State also turned in outstanding defensive efforts. Idaho State held Northern Colorado scoreless for three quarters, and
kept the Bears from crossing midfield until the fourth quarter. Linebacker Ryan Phipps had 12
tackles and a sack. Weber State held Sacramento State to just seven points, almost posting
its first shutout of a Big Sky opponent since beating Nevada 10-0 in a 1980 game in Ogden.
Sacramento State had just 272 yards of total offense.
THE CENTURY MARK: Weber State coach Ron McBride can earn his 100th career coaching
victory with a win over Northern Colorado on Saturday. McBride earned 88 victories from
1990-2002 as the head coach at the University of Utah. He has 11 victories in his third season with the Wildcats.
SOUERS UP TO 52: Northern Arizona coach Jerome Souers earned his 52nd career victory
last Saturday. Souers ranks eighth on the Big Sky’s all-time win list. He can move into a tie for
seventh with former Weber State coach Dave Arslanian, and former Idaho coach John L. Smith
with a win on Saturday against Idaho State. Eastern Washington’s Paul Wulff and Montana’s
Bobby Hauck are both closing in on the top 10 list. Wulff has 47 victories. Hauck has 46.

THIS & THAT: Northern Colorado’s Cristian Sarmento had 14 tackles against Idaho State, the
third straight games he’s notched double figures…Northern Arizona and Portland State combined for 55 first downs and 1,011 yards of total offense. The Vikings had 29 first downs and
516 yards of total offense, while NAU had 26 first downs and 495 yards of total offense…
Weber State did not allow a sack against Sacramento State, which entered the game ranked
second in the nation in sacks per game. The Hornets tallied seven sacks against the Wildcats in
2006…Weber State’s Trevyn Smith rushed for 110 yards against Sacramento State, becoming the Wildcats’ first 100-yard rusher this season. The Wildcats, however, still do not have
a rushing touchdown…Idaho State did not allow Northern Colorado to cross midfield until
the fourth quarter…NAU’s K.J. Gerard picked off PSU QB Brian White for his fifth interception in six games. Gerard’s five picks are tied for first in the nation…Montana State has won
seven in a row at Bobcat Stadium, matching the longest home win streak since the 1975-77
team won 11 straight…MSU has played three straight games in rain or snow...Montana is the
top-ranked team in the Sports Network Poll for the third straight week. Montana State jumped
up two spots to No. 11. Montana dropped one spot to No. 2 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll. The
coaches voted Montana State 12th.
