Coconut Grove, Miami’s most historic and lush landscape, is the crossroad of old and new. Whether you’re biking or walking, come visit the Grove this Spring.
A local’s guide to
Coconut Grove
Miami’s original community
by the bay since 1873
Miami’s original neighborhood was founded in 1873 by an eclectic mix of pioneers,
artists, intellectuals and adventurers and the tropical oasis of Coconut Grove thrives
to this day as Miami’s escape from the stress of city life. In the middle of Miami,
yet completely separate, Coconut Grove offers a warm, laid-back atmosphere of
boutiques, shady lanes, sidewalk cafes and quaint watering holes with a distinctly
bohemian flair where one can drop in and chill out every day of the week, any time
of the year. Inside you will find great options for what to see and do, as well as a
detailed map and expert advice from local “Grovites.” Get your Grove on!

6Streets to Explore
in Coconut Grove
By Patricia Guarch Wise, local blogger, MIAMI NICE, www.miaminicemag.com.
MIAMI NICE is a blog that takes a close look at authentic, local Miami culture.
Coconut Grove has a series
of treelined streets that
together form an unique
and one-of-a-kind neighborhood, a community,
a “vibe”, if you will. The
Grove, as most people refer
to it, is where the streets
each have their own individual character and voice.
This quarter, I thought we’d
take a bit of magnified
look at some of the loudest,
proudest and most serene
streets in Coconut Grove.

PARKING
Fuller Street
Fuller Street feels just like The Grove should, it’s
full of little local stores and spots that feel like
they’re waiting to be discovered like Silverado
Gift Shop. Of course, those in the know aren’t
surprised by the great shopping with boutiques
like Golden Bar, where
they strike the
perfect blend of boho and trendy that offer a unique
selection of both clothing and home decor. Beyond
the shopping, there’s an eclectic, very Grove-y mix
of beloved dive bars such as Barracuda Bar & Grill,
where you can find the best fish sandwich in town
to pair with a large selection of craft beer. Fuller
Street even has an indoor paddleboard exercise
studio, SUP the Workout, perfect for our active
neighborhood.

Grand Avenue
Grand Avenue is one of the Grove’s
main arteries, if your route is anything
like my route, you’re entering the
Grove through Grand regularly. There
are a few staples right at the entrance
like the veterinarian’s office, the post
office and The Last Carrot, a locals’
spot for anything fresh and healthy.
There have been a few new additions
like Sapore di Mare (I can’t wait to
try this very quaint new seafood
spot!). A bit further down are more
classics like Condom USA, Grove Ink
Tattoo, and Maya Hatcha, where you
should head for all your light linen
summer-wardrobe needs, and, of
course, CocoWalk that has anything
and everything for a local and visitor
alike.
Commodore P laza
Commodore Plaza is definitely known
as a dining destination with expansive
sidewalk cafes that are used year round.
Greenstreet, Lokal, Georges in the Grove and
Strada are all famed eateries collected on the
short stretch that is Commodore
Plaza, but tucked between
them are a few sweet
surprises that you may not
know about: Bianco – an
all natural and organic Italian
gelato shop with impeccable customer service,
Allie & Chica – the handbag destination of Miami,
Dharma Yoga (the studio
also leads our free
community classes in
Peacock Park),
the new and
very wearable
Market, a laidback women’s
boutique and the
ultra-chic shop
– The Griffin, a
high-end shoe
and accessory boutique.

Mary Street & Florida Avenue are just behind CocoWalk and
The Mayfair, and that’s part of the charm. This quiet bit
of Coconut Grove is not lacking in things to do, it’s just
a little quieter with a more walkable and pedestrian
friendly stretch of promenades and sidewalks surrounding
the creative class mecca in the Grove. Check out The
Bookstore in the Grove + Cafe and have lunch from their
new expansive menu while you stock up on your next read.
Cross the plaza and get your flowers from The Blonde Tulip
and sip a coffee from their coffee bar and café while waiting
for your custom arrangement. While you’re running all these
errands (and eating and drinking along the way, of course) stop in at
Oxxo Dry Cleaners and leave it up to the professionals to dry clean your latest
boutique items. On this street, you can be sure to get it all done without much hassle.
5 Main Highway
A drive down Main Highway is one of the most
beautiful drives in Miami, it’s lush and tropical
and wild in all the best ways. The Barnacle, a
historic state park right on the bridge between
residential Main Highway and the Downtown
area, is a little time capsule of Grove goodness.
It’s a bit of preserved old Grove that is worth a visit
for both the historical value and the great events that they
put on all year – like outdoor movie screenings! A bit further down are great spots like
the El Taquito, one of the best
kept cheap Mexican fused
eats in the city, Florentino
Plaza that has one of a kind
boutiques to explore such
as Sale Rack and Olfactory
Company, and of course
Vinos in the Grove, where
live music can be heard three
days a week.
6 McFarlane Road
There’s a lot of change going on in
Coconut Grove, positive change that’s brought a new influx of positive and
promising energy to the whole neighborhood, and McFarlane Road is right at the
center of this movement. The Grove is about to get a whole new kind of pizza culture
with the opening of Harry’s Pizzeria in a short few months.
Clyde Butcher has brought his beautiful art to a fresh new
gallery space on the street. Amidst all the change, Grove
staples like Catch-A-Wave are going strong and Peacock Park is abuzz with free yoga and other fitness
classes (multiple times a week!). Other amenities
Miami residents can enjoy is the newly renovated
community center where after school programs are
held as well as the soccer field and basketball court.
Speaking of Yoga, a new studio will be arriving on
McFarlane Road along with Choices Café,an organic
and vegan café, that will open this summer.
