GSE NORTH AMERICAN MANUFACTURING CAPABILITIES
The geomembrane manufacturing facilities in the U.S. are ISO
9001 Certified with labs accredited by the Geosynthetic Accreditation Institute-Lab accreditation Program (GAI-LAP).
There are two geomembrane manufacturing facilities located
in Houston, Texas. They are equipped with seven round die HDPE
and LLDPE geomembrane extrusion lines, one flat cast extrusion
manufacturing line, and an HDPE geonet and geocomposite
drainage product manufacturing line. The nonwoven geotextiles
used in the geocomposite products are manufactured at the GSE
facility located in Kingstree, South Carolina. This facility also has
a geonet and geocomposite manufacturing line to produce various drainage products.
Bentofix® fabric encased geosynthetic clay liners are manufactured in Ontario, Canada. GSE GundSeal geomembrane supported geosynthetic clay liners are manufactured at its owned

• Geomembranes – GSE HD, GSE White, GSE Conductive,
and GSE Green are available in high density polyethylene
(HDPE) with either a smooth or textured surface. These HPDE
geomembrane liners are excellent for use in a variety of covered or exposed lining applications. GSE UltraFlex, GSE
UltraFlex White, GSE UltraFlex Textured, and GSE UltraFlex
White Textured are available in linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE). These LLDPE geomembranes are designed for
use in a variety of applications that require improved elongation properties when compared with HDPE geomembranes.
• Geosynthetic Clay Liners (GCLs) - Bentofix® fabric encased
GCLs are needle punched reinforced composites that combine two durable geotextile outer layers with a uniform core
of natural sodium bentonite clay to form a hydraulic barrier.
GSE GundSeal geomembrane supported GCLs are the most
hydraulically advanced lining product available with
improved leakage performance over conventional geomembrane/clay composite liners.
• Geonets – GSE HyperNet geonets are synthetic drainage

Geotextiles – are polypropylene, staple-fiber,
nonwoven needle punched fabrics ranging in weight from 4
to 32 oz/yd2 (130 to 1,060 g/m2). They are used in environmental and industrial applications for separation and filtration of soils and liquids.
• Concrete Protection Systems – GSE StudLiner is an HDPE
embedment liner that provides concrete protection against
mechanical and corrosive damage in a wide range of industrial, municipal and civil applications.

GSE has the most experienced and comprehensive turn-key installation capabilities of any geosynthetic lining company. GSE provides a worldwide installation network of more than 100

and testing equipment.
GSE standard products are backed by an extensive manufacturing quality assurance (MQA) program through its own state-of-theart and GAI-LAP accredited laboratories located at each US and

GSE installation crews consist of experienced and highly
trained Site Managers, Welding Technicians and Quality Assurance Technicians. All GSE installation crews are under the supervision of a GSE Site Manager: GSE Site Managers’ installation
experience averages more than 30,000,000 ft2 (2,800,000 m2)
of installed geosynthetic lining materials. Their experience and
commitment assures each installation will be conducted in accordance with the contract specifications and GSE high quality standards.
The GSE MQA program ensures that all manufactured materials meet or exceed the most stringent quality standards in the
industry. All quality control tests are conducted in accordance
with established guidelines outlined by ASTM, as well as other
recognized test standards and organizations, such as the Geosynthetic Research Institute (GRI).
GSE Installation Quality Assurance Technicians work closely
with the Installation Site Managers to ensure that the commitment
to quality is foremost for each project. As the liner project progresses, GSE Quality Assurance Technicians carry out an installation quality control plan to ensure that all welds and installed
liner meet GSE’s requirements.
GSE QUALITY ASSURANCE PROGRAM
The MQA program begins with testing and verification of specially formulated resins and other raw materials and extends
through delivery to the site. GSE inspects and tests all virgin polyethylene resins upon delivery and before unloading to ensure it
meets the strict requirements for geomembrane manufacturing.
All GSE geomembranes are 100% spark tested for pinholes during the manufacturing process to ensure each delivered roll is leak
free. Samples from each geomembrane roll are subjected to an
array of quality assurance tests to verify that all physical property requirements meet or exceed GSE’s and the customers’ specification standards. Roll Test Data Reports (RTDRs) are provided for

THE ULTIMATE CONCRETE PROTECTION PRODUCTS
GSE StudLiner is a high density polyethylene (HDPE)
concrete embedment liner used in a wide range of applications to protect concrete from corrosion, erosion and
mechanical damage. GSE has successfully sold millions of
square feet of StudLiner worldwide in industrial, civil and
municipal applications. GSE StudLiner is available in various sheet thicknesses of 80 to 200 mils (2.0 to 5.0 mm).
GSE StudLiner demonstrates excellent resistance to chemical and biological attack. These are media that will
degrade concrete over time. By incorporating GSE StudLiner into a design, the life expectancy of a structure will
increase considerably. This results in lower long term maintenance costs.
GSE StudLiner incorporates approximately 110 studs per
square foot, which provides the highest liner pull-out
strength available from any thermoplastic concrete system,
and allows for minimal lateral movement due to thermal
expansion and contraction. Studs are formed during the
extrusion process and are an integral part of the sheet.

PIPE
Pre-cast pipe, used in applications such as, sanitary
sewer systems, discharge lines and distribution feeder lines
are lined with GSE StudLiner to protect against corrosion
from harsh chemicals. StudLiner can be delivered in roll
form or pre-fabricated tubes with specified dimensions.
Extrusion welding or electro fusion welding is available to
attach the tubes to create continuous lining system.
REHABILITATION
GSE StudLiner is also available to rehabilitate structures. Panels can be fabricated and then installed by
establishing form work. Grout will be injected into the
interstitial space and the studs are permanently locked into
place.

PRE-CAST
Pre-cast concrete structures involve pre-fabricated panels or tubes used for applications such as sumps, trenches,
manholes and tunnels. Panels are fabricated to the specified dimensions and delivered to a pre-caster for installation. Once adjoining pre-cast panels are in place, the
adjacent GSE StudLiner panels can be extrusion welded or
electro fusion welded together to create a continuous barrier system.

A QUALITY LINING SYSTEM
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) lining systems are commonly used to contain hazardous and non-hazardous
waste, as well as protect against corrosion and erosion.
GSE StudLiner, an HDPE concrete embedment liner, was
created in 1986 specifically to protect against corrosion,
erosion and mechanical damage. GSE StudLiner can be
used in new applications or existing applications to rehabilitate structures. GSE StudLiner is used in many applications, such as sewer pipe, manholes, pump stations, etc.
HDPE is commonly used in these applications due to the
excellent resistance to chemical and biological attack that
will degrade concrete over time. By incorporating GSE
StudLiner, the life expectancy of a structure will increase
and the cost of long term maintenance will decrease. For
example, studies show the effectiveness of seepage reduction in a pipe application using concrete alone is approximately 70% as compared to the approximate 95%
seepage reduction using concrete with an HDPE concrete
embedment liner. Although the cost of a lined concrete system is initially more expensive, the durability of the two systems together can achieve a lower maintenance cost of less
than $0.005/ft2-year.

For over 35 years the Strathcona County sanitary sewer
line has serviced approximately 26,000 people. Over a
period of time, the original concrete pipe line suffered various degrees of hydrogen sulfide corrosion within the

made to replace the original sanitary sewer line with a
new sewer line that will ultimately service 29,000+ people, along with an additional 198 ha (489 acres) of commercial and light industrial land.

GSE Studliner is a high density polyethylene (HDPE) embedment liner that protects against chemical and mechanical
damage to concrete structures. GSE Studliner is manufactured with approximately 110 studs per square foot to guarantee high pullout strength and provide excellent stress distribution, especially during temperature changes and pressure
build-up. GSE Studliner can be installed over an exposed surface of a new or existing concrete structure, and it will provide a life expectancy that is five times greater than that of an unprotected structure.

GSE STANDARD PRODUCTS
I.
PRODUCTION PROCESS AND DESCRIPTION
A. GSE StudLiner is a thermoplastic embedment sheet manufactured with high density polyethylene (HDPE).
B. The studs are extruded during the sheet extrusion process and are an integral part of the sheet.
C. GSE StudLiner is available in 2.0 mm to 5.0 mm with either a black or grey pigment.
D. GSE StudLiner is available in either roll form or pre-fabricated panels. Standard roll dimensions are 8.0
feet in width and up to 246 feet in length depending on the product thickness chosen.
II.
PROFILES AND WELDING MATERIAL
A. All GSE profiles are made from HDPE material.
B. Cap strips are 80 mils thick and are available in black or grey.
C. Welding rod is manufactured from HDPE and is available in 4 mm or 5 mm diameter.
III.
MATERIAL HANDLING AND STORAGE
A. When material is received on-site, it should be placed on a clean, smooth surface to prevent damage to
the liner.
B. The storage area should be clear of any rock or debris, and material shall be kept under protective cover
to reduce exposure and limit damage.
C. Unloading of StudLiner rolls should be performed by equipment that will lift the roll from the center core.
IV.
ON WALLS AND CEILINGS
A. When liners are fitted into the forms, care should be taken to prevent damage to the liner or pre-fabricated seam.
B. Wood forms:
1. Place the GSE StudLiner in the wooden form with the studs pointing away from the form. Panel layout is important to eliminate as much field welding as possible.
2. Using #8 box nails, attach the liner to the form. Place nails 3/16” from the edge of the liner to minimize repairs. Nails should be placed 12” on center.
3. Attach form supports where needed.
4. Secure forms.
5. Pour concrete.
6. Strip the forms in a normal fashion and normal timing.
7. Nails will stay in the forms and pull through the StudLiner when stripping. Nail holes will be repaired
when the seams are extrusion welded.
8. Repair form support holes as needed.

C. Aluminum and Fiberglass Forms
1. Use banding material to secure StudLiner to forms. For spacing information, contact a GSE StudLiner
representative.
2. Attach form supports where needed.
3. Secure forms.
4. Pour concrete.
5. To strip the forms, cut banding to release form and trim flush at the StudLiner joint.
6. Repair form support holes with extrusion welding equipment as needed.
V.
FLOORING
A. On a typical cast-in-place project, the flooring is the last item to be lined due to the possibility of mechanical and construction damage. The following are the three most common types of installation for GSE
StudLiner on a horizontal grade:
1. Direct Insertion
2. Grout Injected
3. Grout In-laid
B. Direct Insertion
After concrete has been screeded and leveled, insert a pre-cut panel of StudLiner into the surface of the
concrete and use a roller and/or a vibrator compactor to force the StudLiner into place. This should be
followed immediately with a plywood cap weighted with sandbags to hold the StudLiner in place during
the curing cycle. This method is recommended for small areas only.
C. Grout Injected
1. Divide the work area into a working grid. For example, 8’ x 16’.
2. Ring selected area with 2x4 oak or other suitable material as your height boundaries. These strips
should be permanently connected to the existing slab by using a stud gun or other mechanical attachment.
3. Pre-cut a StudLiner panel to center on installed strips.
4. Using nails or screws, attach StudLiner to strips. Anchors should be placed 12” on center and 3/16”
from the edge of the liner.
5. Using a hole saw, core 1-1/2” to 2” diameter holes for grout insertion and ports for the evacuation
of air no more than every 6 to 8 feet for the insertion of free flowing grout.
6. As an option, you may or may not weld a 3” to 4” high tube into the grout holes. This can be completed in the fabrication process.
7. Grout for a larger project is typically delivered in a pumper truck.
8. The grout should be mixed and poured in one interrupted process.
9. Concrete should be poured systematically in one direction to prevent the formation of capped air.

5. With studs facing the grouted area, insert the StudLiner panel into the grout.
6. Use a roller and/or a vibrator compactor to force the StudLiner into place.
7. (Optional) Using nails or screws, attach StudLiner to strips. Anchors should be placed 12” on center
and 3/16” from the edge of the liner.
8. Apply a plywood cap weighted with sandbags to hold the StudLiner into place during the curing
cycle.
VI.
FIELD SEAMING
Field seaming involves the attachment of adjacent panels using approved thermal methods such as extrusion or
electro fusion welding. Testing and verification of the welds are imperative to a quality installation.
A. Equipment and Materials

3. If seams are butted together, panels can be attached using a cap strip, or if properly prepared, seams
can be attached with an extrusion weld only.
B. Seaming Method
1. All field seams should be welded to provide a continuous impermeable barrier.
2. With the use of an extrusion welder, HDPE welding rod can be extruded on to the seams to attach
the adjacent panels. Contact a GSE representative for more information.
VII. SEAM TESTING
A. Non-destructive Seam Testing
1. Non-destructive seam testing of the finished weld consists of vacuum box testing and spark testing
depending on the project specific requirements.
2. Vacuum box testing can be performed on all accessible welds. A negative pressure of approximately
5 psi shall be applied to the seam. A defect in the weld will be noted by the presence of bubbles
along the edge of the vacuum box. The defect shall be marked and repaired with approved methods.

3. If spark testing of the finished seams is required, a copper wire must be set into the weld joint prior
to welding. This will allow for spark testing of the welded seam for determination of the presence of
possible leaks in the weld. Spark testing can be performed with approved instrumentation when set
at approximately 20,000 to 35,000 volts depending upon the apparatus. Any defects found should
be marked and repaired according to approved repair methods.
B. Destructive Seam Testing
1. Destructive seam testing should be performed on trial welds.
2. Welded seams should be tested for shear strength according to standard industry guidelines.
3. The weld should exhibit approximately 70% of the parent tensile yield strength.
4. Destructive seam testing is not advised once the product has been embedded into concrete.

Electrofusion Welding Guidelines
GSE STANDARD PRODUCTS
I.
INTRODUCTION
StudLiner (a HDPE concrete protection liner), where used in pipelines, requires post-installation sealing of the circumferential joints between adjacent pipe sections in order to isolate the concrete from the fluids and gases conveyed by the pipeline. These joints are sealed by means of a performed strip of HDPE with electrical resistance
heater wire imbedded in an HDPE welding rod that runs along each side of the strip. The strip is placed on the
joint, radially-outward pressure is applied to the strip, and electric current is applied to the resistance wire allowing the strip to fuse to the liner and seal the joint.
This manual provides information on safety, setup and operation of the system developed by GSE Lining
Technology, Inc. to accomplish this task.
II.
SAFETY
The following guidelines should be observed:
1. Observe all relevant sections of Federal Regulation 29 CFR part 1910, Occupational Safety and Health
Regulations, and Part 1926, Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, as well any other relevant
federal, state, and local regulations or contractual requirements.
2. Wear appropriate personnel protective equipment, such as hard hat, safety glasses, ear protection, etc…
3. Utilize appropriate safety equipment necessary for confined space entry, such as hazardous gas detector, oxygen monitor, ventilation equipment, etc…
4. Refer to the electrofusion processor manufacturer’s manual for all safety requirements of that equipment.
5. Refer to the pressure ring manufacturer’s manual for all safety requirements of that equipment.
6. Never inflate the bladder outside of the pipeline or inside a pipeline larger than the pressure ring was
designed for.
7. Before connecting the air supply, verify that in doing so, the bladder will not unexpectedly inflate.
8. Never exceed the bladder’s rated maximum inflation pressure.
III.
SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The system consists of three main components – a cap strip, an electrofusion processor, and a pressure ring.
A. Capstrip
The cap strip is made up a strip of HDPE material that matches the StudLiner material, an electrofusion
welding rod, and two copper end connectors. The thickness of the cap strip should be 80 mils thick.
Length of the cap strip is determined by pipeline diameter. A 6 inch overlap is utilized so that the joint
can be completely sealed in one welding operation.
B. Electrofusion Processor
The electrofusion processor is the output power supply that regulates a constant output current. It requires
a generator that can provide 240V/30 amps continuous service dedicated to the processor.

C. Pressure Ring
A means to provide pressure radially outward against the joint will need to be provided. This can be
accomplished by a pressure ring that consists of a ring made of structural grade materials and designed
to withstand the operating loads, a bladder, and a means to accommodate the high temperatures
incurred during the welding operation. Contact GSE Lining Technology, Inc. for more information.
D. Auxiliary Equipment
In addition to the primary system components, you will need an air compressor capable of supplying the
required inflation pressure, a generator, and any necessary tools, work equipment, and/ or safety equipment. The air compressor and generator should be located above ground with hose and cable of sufficient length to reach all joints to be sealed. Keep in mind there will be line losses (air and electrical) that
limits the furthest joint that can be sealed. Air lines will have to be sized such that the bladder can fill in
a reasonable time at the furthest joint, while electrical lines must be sized such that the processor can
operate according to its specifications at the furthest joint.
IV.
SETUP
A. Pressure Ring
The pressure ring should be assembled according to the instructions from the manufacturer. The ring
should be adjusted such that it is concentric with the pipeline and there is an even gap between the ring
and pipeline around the entire circumference.
B. Electrofusion Processor
The electrofusion processor should be setup according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
C. Joint Preparation
The following steps should be performed to prepare a joint for sealing:
1. Clean and dry the Studliner on each adjacent section of pipe a minimum of 3 inches from each end.
Concrete residue should be carefully scraped off, while dirt and moisture can be wiped off with a
clean dry rag. If a cleaner is needed, it should be suitable for use on plastics (specifically polyethylene) and should be appropriate for the work environment.
2. Clean and dry the cap strip.
3. Check the capstrip’s electrofusion welding rod for continuity by connecting a multi-meter between the
two electrical connectors.
4. Install the cap strip such that it is centered over the joint and the edges of the overlapped ends are
aligned. The end with the electrical connectors should be against the pipe, with the “u-shaped” end
overlapping it. The cap strip can be adhered to the pipe by the use of adhesives or other methods.
Whatever the method, care should be taken to prevent damage to the liner or cap strip.
5. Center the pressure ring over the cap strip.
6. Inflate the bladder just enough to fix the pressure ring in the joint, while still allowing access to the
connectors.

7. Connect the output cable from the electrofusion processor to the electrical connectors on the cap strip.
Be sure to provide a method of strain relief to the connectors (i.e. don’t let the weight of the cables
pull on the connectors).
8. Inflate the bladder to the desired welding pressure. An inflation pressure of 20 psi to 30 psi is recommended. Leave the air source connected to the bladder during welding.
9. Verify that the bladder and cap strip are still aligned. The joint is now ready to be sealed.
V.
WELDING PROCEDURE
The following procedure is written with the assumption that the reader understands the operation of the electrofusion processor:
1. Verify that all the steps of joint preparation have been completed.
2. Turn on the processor.
3. Wait for the internal self test to complete and the display to read “connect element.” If the electrical connection to the cap strip is already made, you will not see the “connect element” screen and should skip
to step 5.
4. Connect the processor output cable to the cap strip (the “element” in this case) as described in step 7 of
Section 4-C.
5. Wait for the processor to complete the resistance check. Display will read “verifying resistance” during
this check. If a satisfactory weld has already been completed and the “repeat last weld” feature of the
processor is being utilized, skip to step 10. Otherwise proceed to step 6.
6. Enter the current. It is recommended that the current be set at 33 amps initially, and adjusted up or down
as necessary to control the temperature of the weld.
7. Enter the welding time. An initial setting of 3 minutes is recommended.
8. Enter the number of coils (continuous sections of the electrofusion welding rod). This should always be
set to 1, except in special situations and only after consultation with GSE.
9. Enter the cool down time. This should be at least equal to the welding time.
10. Verify the weld data. Input data will be displayed for final verification prior to starting the weld.
11. Press start to begin welding.
12. Wait until the welding process is complete (the processor will beep continuously), then deflate the pressure ring bladder.
13. Disconnect output cable from the cap strip. Power to the processor may be left on if additional welds will
be made and the “repeat last weld” feature of the processor will be utilized.
14. Cut electrical connectors off cap strip by cutting the electrofusion welding rod as close as possible to the
cap strip. This is best done carefully with a pair of dikes, however, whatever the method; care must be
taken to prevent damage to the liner or cap strip. The weld is now complete.

WELD INSPECTION
It is recommended that the operator perform a 100% visual inspection for flaws on the sealed joint before proceeding to the next joint.
The cap strip will have a slight depression approximately 3/16” wide in the region of the weld zone. This is normal, and is due to “squeezing out” of the melt pool and temperature effects. This should appear relatively uniform around the entire joint.
Questionable welds can be checked by mechanical point stress testing, in which a blunt instrument is run along
the edge of the seam to check for obvious unfused areas (reference ASTM D4437). Make sure not to damage
the liner material and allow the seam sufficient time to cure before performing the test.
In addition to the above-referenced inspections any contractual test requirements should be performed according
to the procedures and/or standards referenced in the contract documents. Whatever the test method, it should
be of a non-destructive nature.

I.
INTRODUCTION
GSE StudLiner is a concrete embedment protective lining system manufactured in 8-foot roll widths and several
different roll lengths, depending on the product chosen for the project. In order to complete the system to protect
the concrete, it is important to permanently connect the panels. This can be accomplished by extrusion welding
the panels together. Several steps are taken to achieve this and they will be discussed through out this manual.
This manual provides information on safety, set-up, operation and troubleshooting as developed by GSE Lining
Technology, Inc. to accomplish this task.
II.
SAFETY
The following guidelines should be observed:
1. Observe all relevant sections of Federal Regulation 29 CFR part 1910, Occupational Safety and Health
Regulations, and Part 1926, Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, as well as any other relevant federal, state and local regulations or contractual requirements.
2. Refer to the extrusion welder manufacturer's manual for all safety requirements of that equipment.
3. Wear appropriate personnel protective equipment, such as hard hat, safety glasses, ear protection,
leather work gloves, etc. Refer to site specific safety measures.
4. Utilize appropriate safety equipment when necessary for confined space entry, such as hazardous gas
detector, oxygen monitor, ventilation equipment, etc. Refer to site specific safety measures.

1. Power Supply - On site plant power supply or on site portable generator. The power supply should be
able to handle multiple tasks at one time. The following formula can be used to determine the generator
size if a field generator is being used:
(Volts x Amps)/1.414 = Watts/1000 = Kilowatts
2. Extrusion Welder - A high output extrusion welder (ex: 10#/min) will be needed to reduce fatigue on the
operator. The extrusion welder will also need an on-board forced hot air pre-heat and a temperature controller with a quick recovery time (ex: 2 seconds).
3. Hot Air Tack Welder - A hot air tack welder with a broad, flat nozzle. The air tack welder should have
the ability to allow the operator to increase or decrease temperature based on outside temperature and
material gauge thickness.
4. Grinder - A 4 1/2" grinder with a rubber backing pad and a lock nut.
5. Sanding Disks - There should be a supply of 80 grit disks available. Disks should be changed often.
Disks should be changed when the disk gets damaged or starts loading. Loading is when the material
being grinded continues to stay in the grit on the disk face.
6. Utility Knife and Spar Blades - Hook blades and straight blades should be available.
7. Tacking Hammer - A 2# smooth, flathead hammer or J-roller. The J-roller can be made of steel or Teflon.
8. Die Grinder - The die grinder should be electric and include a drum sander, 80 grit sanding drums and
a cone-shaped grinding stone bit.
9. Extension Cords - 200 feet, 10 gauge cord. For each additional 100 feet of cord over 200 feet, the wire
gauge size must increase by 1. This will keep the voltage drop to less than 5% to decrease the chances
of damaging equipment due to low voltage.
10. Power Splitter - At least a 3-way splitter for the extruder, grinder and air tack welder. A larger splitter
will be needed for if other electrical equipment is used.
11. Leatherwork Gloves - Use to prevent damage to hands from cutting blades and heat.

SURFACE PREPARATION FOR OVERLAPPED PANELS
Proper surface preparation is the key to successful welding for overlapped panels. It is important to keep the surface of the liner clean and dry. Follow the steps below to complete the proper preparation of the liner surface of
overlapped panels before welding:
1. Before StudLiner panels can be overlapped, it will be necessary to grind off the studs (as much as possible to make a smooth surface) on the top sheet that will be in contact with the bottom sheet. This can be
accomplished using a grinder or a router.
2. Overlap the liner according to project specifications. If project specifications are not given, the standard
overlap for GSE StudLiner is 3 inches.

3. Using the back of a utility knife, score the edge of the top sheet onto the bottom sheet. This is where the
center of the weld bead should be, and can be used for grinding preparation. Never use a knife blade
to score the mark on the liner.
4. Bevel the edge of the top sheet with a grinder at a 45° angle.

5. On the underside of the top sheet, rough the sheet with a grinder no more than 1/2" to 3/4" in width.
This is to prepare for the hot air tack weld. This tack grind dies not need to be grinded as much as the
actual weld grind. Grind lightly to roughen the surface.
6. Tack grind on the inside of the score line (closest to the seam or weld bead line) on the bottom sheet no
more than 1/2" to 3/4".

7. Using a hot air gun and a hammer, tack or J-roller, tack weld small sections of the liner together at one
time. Apply hammer pressure just in front of the hot air gun nozzle. The nozzle should be under the top
sheet approximately 1 1/2". Pull the nozzle out to top sheet beveled edge, moving the hammer with the
nozzle. Tack the top, middle and bottom part of the section. Spot tack 4' on center, then tack the entire
seam 1" to 4" at a time always tacking back to the spot tacks. (Figure 1)

8. Grind 1/2" to 3/4" on each side of the seam center line perpendicular (or in a feather-like pattern) to
the seam. The grind width is half of the weld bead design width on each side of the seam.
HELPFUL HINTS:

Never grind wider than the weld bead.
•
When grinding the surface prior to welding, it is important to grind no more than 5 mils away from the
surface. Remove all oxidation.
•
Keep grinded area clean and dry. Grinded area cannot set for more than 20 minutes or it will have to
be re-grinded.
SURFACE PREPARATION FOR BUTTED PANELS AND INSIDE AND OUTSIDE CORNERS
Another method of seaming is butting the panels together. This is a more common way to position the panels during layout. Butt welding is also used on inside and outside corners. Welding preparation is minimized using this
method. Listed below are the steps to follow to complete the proper surface preparation for a butt-welded seam:
1. Keep the surface of the liner clean and dry.
2. It is not always necessary to grind off the studs when using this method.
3. When possible, bevel the edges of the StudLiner material at a 45° angle. This is typically not possible
when casting in place.

Extrusion Welding Guidelines

4. Anchor the liner using a # 8 box nail or screw. The anchor should be placed 3/16" from the edge of
the material and 12" on center so the extrusion weld will cover the nails or screw. This will minimize
repair.
5. Grind 1/2" to 3/4" on each side of the seam. The grind should be perpendicular (or in a feather-like
pattern) to the seam. The grind width is half of the weld bead design width on each side of the seam.
HELPFUL HINTS:
•
Never grind wider than the weld bead.
•
When grinding the surface prior to welding, it is important to grind no more than 5 mils away from the
surface. Remove all oxidation.
•
Keep grinded area clean and dry. Grinded area cannot set for more than 20 minutes or it will have to
be re-grinded.
VII. EXTRUSION WELDING
Extrusion welding is the final step to completing a properly welded seam. When selecting an extrusion welder,
the machine and the size of the orifice should be able to maintain back pressure during output without creating
cavities in the weld bead/ extrudate. The extrusion welding machine should be operated according to its specifications (see Appendix A). Follow the steps below to properly extrusion weld a seam:
1. Pre-heat the extrusion welder for 15 to 20 minutes to the set melt value. This has to be completed before
welding begins or the temperature-controlled start interlock will prevent the drive from starting.
2. Make sure the pre-heat nozzle is continuing to work by checking the nozzle pre-heat reading.

4. To start purging, bump the trigger until extrudate moves out of the nozzle and shoe. Purge 1 1/2" to 3"

5. To start welding, lift the machine and hold it vertical with the shoe down within 1/4" of the liner surface.
Hold the extrusion welder approximately 3° from vertical (towards the body), place the extrusion welder
on the seam and pull the trigger.

Extrusion Welding Guidelines

When welding an inside or out side corners, the shoe needs to be changed to fit the corner piece.
•
Follow the contours of the liner material.
•
The weld should be consistent and fill the weld bead design.
HELPFUL HINTS:
•
The extrusion welder should have a cold start protection.
•
The speed of the welder is determined by the output of the machine and weld bead design.
•
The thickness of the bead should be 1 1/2 times greater than the gauge thickness of the material being
welded. The width of the weld should be 1 1/2".
VIII. PRE-WELD QUALIFICATION
Pre-weld qualification is important to ensure the extrusion equipment is functioning properly. Samples are taken
from the pre-weld to perform seam testing. Seam testing can only be measured on overlapped seams.
1. Pre-welding conditions should resemble true field welding conditions (i.e. outside temperature, heat setting of the extrusion welder, etc.)
2. Sample size should be approximately 2 feet in width and 6 feet in length.
3. Prepare and weld the sample as stated in previous sections. If the project requires overlap, prepare and
weld the sample with an overlap.
4. Samples should be cut using a bone cutter.
5. Samples should be tested using a tensiometer. Samples tested should meet project specifications.

Introduction
GSE STANDARD PRODUCTS
1.0 INTRODUCTION
In 2003 and 2004 GSE Houston performed mechanical pullout testing of GSE StudLiner manufactured in the
USA. The purpose was to verify that the product, newly manufactured in the USA, would meet the mechanical pullout specifications already established for the product by material previously manufactured by GSE in
Germany.
For a background on StudLiner and its role in concrete protection the reader is referred to Technical Report
TP-231 – GSE Studliner: Pullout Strength Investigation. This report will describe the results of the above-referenced mechanical pullout testing.
2.0 TEST MATERIALS
2.1 GSE STUDLINER
Mechanical pullout testing was performed on 2 mm, 3 mm, and 5 mm thick GSE StudLiner samples.
This represents all standard products except 4 mm, which at the writing of this report has not yet been
manufactured in the USA.
2.2 CONCRETE
All mechanical pullout testing utilized Quikcrete® 5000 – a pre-mixed bagged product which achieves
5,000 psi strength after 28 days.
Test Cylinders for each batch of concrete mixed were taken to QC Laboratories of Houston, Texas for
compressive strength testing. Results are shown in Appendix A.
3.0 TEST RESULTS
Testing method followed the above-mentioned report – TP-231. The reader is referred to that document for a
detailed description of the test method.
Table 1 shows the results of 75 test samples covering all three sheet thicknesses that yielded useful data.
Cracks in the concrete blocks prevented several additional samples from providing useful data. Failure mode
was typically due to the shearing deformation of the stud head as described in Section 3.3 of TP-231 (see also
Figure 4 of TP-231), however, some isolated incidents of concrete failure around the stud were observed.
Individual results are provided in Appendix B. The reader can verify by inspection of the individual test data
that sheet thickness has no statistical significance in the resistance of the GSE StudLiner to mechanical pullout
strength as simulated in this testing.

The product described above and sold by GSE Lining Technology, Inc. (“GSE”) to Purchaser is warranted at the time of sale to be
free from material manufacturing defects (as defined by the contract’s material specifications). THIS LIMITED MANUFACTURER’S
WARRANTY IS IN LIEU OF AND EXCLUDES ALL OTHER WARRANTIES NOT EXPRESSLY SET FORTH HEREIN, WHETHER
EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED BY OPERATION OF LAW OR OTHERWISE, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. GSE shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential loss, direct, indirect or special damages or expenses directly or indirectly arising from the sale, handling or use of the product by Purchaser, or from any other causes relating thereto. This warranty is intended for commercial use only and is not in effect
for the consumer as defined in the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.
GSE’s liability hereunder in any case being expressly limited to the replacement (in the form originally shipped) of product not complying with this warranty, or at GSE’s sole choice and election, to the repayment of an amount equal to the purchase price of so
much of such product as GSE determines to have violated the warranty provided herein, whether such claim(s) are for breach of
warranty or negligence. GSE’s liability under this warranty shall in no event exceed the replacement cost of the product sold to the
Purchaser for the particular installation for which it failed. This limited warranty applies only to the geosynthetic portion this product manufactured by GSE and does not apply to any third-party manufactured materials attached to GSE’s product. The third-party
portion of the product will carry the original manufacturer’s warranty that will be passed through to the Purchaser.
This warranty does not include defects or premature loss of use resulting from acts of God, casualty or catastrophe, including but
not limited to: earthquakes, floods, piercing hail, tornadoes, force majeure, exposure of the Product to harmful chemicals, abuse
by machinery, equipment or people; improper site preparation or covering materials; excessive pressures or stresses from any
source.
Any claim by Purchaser with reference to the Product sold hereunder for any cause shall be deemed waived by Purchaser unless
made in writing, by certified mail or courier, to GSE Lining Technology Co., 19103 Gundle Road, Houston, TX 77073, with the
words “Warranty Claim” clearly marked on the face of the envelope, within thirty (30) days of Purchaser becomes aware of the
alleged defects; provided however, that no warranty claim shall be made by Purchaser more than one (1) year from the date of
sale stated above. GSE shall not be obligated to provide replacement of product or repayment of any purchase price unless and
until the area involving the alleged defective product is clean, dry and unencumbered ready for inspection by GSE representatives.
If after inspection it is determined that there is no claim under this warranty, Purchaser agrees to reimburse GSE for its costs associated with the site inspection.
This warranty is extended to the Purchaser and is non-transferable and non-assignable; i.e. there are no third party beneficiaries to
this warranty. Purchaser acknowledges by acceptance that this warranty is accepted in preference to any and other possible warranties, and waives all other possible warranties. GSE’s warranty becomes an obligation of GSE to perform under the warranty
only upon receipt of final payment.
