Since its premiere in 1994, the annual Fire Island Dance Festival has become
the season’s premier entertainment benefit in Fire Island Pines. It has twice
been hailed by the Sunday Styles section of The New York Times as “One of
the 12 best parties of the year” and celebrated by Out Magazine as the
“summer’s hottest charity event”.
The event is produced by Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of
Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS. Each year, DRA assembles scores of
famed and emerging artists in the dance world to perform for Festival audiences
on a waterfront stage specially built for the Festival with the Great South Bay as
a backdrop. Festival events include the public party and performances as well
as a private gala party for event sponsors.
Each year, Festival performances begin with “DRA Fanfare”, Philip Glass’
1999 composition for brass and percussion – a work created by Glass especially for the Fire Island Dance Festival, as a gift to Dancers Responding to
AIDS. “DRA Fanfare” has been recorded by members of the Eos Orchestra,
Jonathan Sheffer, conductor.
Since its inception, the Fire Island Dance Festival has presented some of the
finest dance companies working in America to perform repertory or original
pieces. Companies that have contributed works of their own in the past have
ranged from American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, MOMIX, Pilobolus, Parsons Dance Company, Ron K. Brown’s Evidence, Bill T
Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company, Mark Morris Dance Group, Paul Taylor
Dance Company, Royal Birmingham Ballet, Complexions, Sean Curran Dance
Company, Doug Varone and Dancers and many more
In 2005, the Fire Island Dance Festival raised over $174,000.

12 BY 12 – FIRE ISLAND DANCE FESTIVAL TWELVE
The title and theme for the 2006 Fire Island Dance Festival draw from the twelve
artists and companies performing in twelfth year of the festival. To celebrate the 12th
year and to set new standards in innovation, 12 BY 12 – Fire Island Dance Festival
Twelve, will feature ten world premiere dances from the companies of Axis Danz,
Jullian Barnett Project, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Lar Lubovitch
Dance Company, Verb Ballets, Kevin Wynn Collection and choreographers Timothy Bish, Christopher Davis, and Peter Quanz as well as repertory pieces from
Festival favorites American Repertory Ballet, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet
and MOMIX.
To foster the creation of world premier dances for the Festival, Dancers Responding
to AIDS has brokered relationships between patrons and artists to establish choreographic sponsorships for new dance works. Joseph Conway, Robert Cory, William
Hayden & Ron Perkov, Brandon Fradd, Irwin Kroot & Anthony Catanzaro, Dr.
Coco Lazaroff, Peter Schamel and Lisa & Steve Cundall Family and Charitable
Trust are the Festival’s Inaugural Choreographic Sponsors for 2006.
Festival performances and parties take place at 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Saturday
July 15 and 5:00 PM on Sunday July 16 on a spectacular private deck at the home of
Jon Biondo, Tim Horman, and Sean Peggs against a backdrop of the sun setting over
the Great South Bay. The Festival unofficially starts with a private gala party on Friday July 14 for Leadership Supporters. The party, aptly titled “Twelfth Night” will
evoke the fanciful spirit Shakespeare’s fictitious island of Illyria from his whimsical
comedy of the same title and will take place at the bay-front home of William Hayden
and Ron Perkov. Other Festival related events include an in-town wine tasting in
NYC, VIP cocktail parties during the Festival weekend, company brunches, and a

Founded by former Paul Taylor dancers Hernando Cortez and Denise Roberts Hurlin in
1991, Dancers Responding to AIDS (DRA) is a fundraising program of Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA). DRA is the ongoing committed response from the
American dance community to an urgent worldwide health crisis. The funds that BC/EFA
and DRA raise are distributed to over 485 AIDS Service organizations across the United
States and to seven social service programs of The Actors’ Fund of America. Since its
founding, BC/EFA and DRA have distributed over 100 million to support these programs.
The vitality of DRA comes from the extraordinary support of the dance community. Professional dancers from companies across the country, performing arts organizations, student dancers, and dance lovers all contribute to DRA projects.
The organization raises funds by producing annual events like The Fire Island Dance
Festival, Dance from the Heart and by requesting dance companies to make audience
appeals (curtain speeches) at the end of performances. Some of DRA’s special past
events include, The Remember Project, Bequeathed (an evening of works by dancers
and choreographers lost to AIDS, at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts),
An Evening of Music and Dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Latin Rhythms with
Chita Rivera. This past June, DRA partnered with the Times Square Alliance to present
Solstice in Times Square – Dancing at the Crossroads, a free to the public outdoor
event in Times Square featuring thirty dance companies and over 200 dancers.
DRA also raises funds with dance studios and competitions across the United States and
Canada with their Dance Student Outreach Project, with support from such prestigious
dance organizations as the New York City Dance Alliance, Tremaine Dance Conventions, Dance Olympus/Dance America and Dance Masters of America. Thanks to
support from corporate sponsors: Capezio, Danskin, Dance Spirit, Dance Teacher,
Point and Bloch – DRA has been able to grow this program and enable thousands of
young dancers in involve themselves, help those living with HIV/AIDS while offering some
amazing performance opportunities. DRA is thrilled that young dancers across the country are joining professionals in their fundraising efforts. In 2004, more than $160,000 was
raised through bake sales, special dance classes and audience appeals by dance studios
competing for the opportunity to win trips to London or Los Angeles.
DRA is the recipient of a 1996 New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie)
And a 1997 Dance Magazine Award.

ARTISTS’ BIOGRAPHIES
AMERICAN REPERTORY BALLET - American Repertory Ballet is New Jersey's leading dance
company and one of the state's major arts organizations. Since 1987, it has been designated a
Major Arts Institution by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, also receiving a Citation of Excellence for 1998-2003 - the only dance company to receive both honors. The company regularly performs throughout New Jersey and tours both nationally and internationally. In addition, ARB performs at the Joyce Theatre, New York City's premiere venue for
contemporary dance. Its powerful dancers perform both established masterpieces by great American choreographers such as George Balanchine as well as cutting edge works by choreographers such as Val Caniparoli, Kirk Peterson, Dominique Dumais, Salvatore Aiello, Susan Hadley,
Mark Godden, Amy Seiwert, Ginger Thatcher, ARB Ballet Mistress Elaine Kudo, and Artistic Director Graham Lustig. http://www.arballet.org/
AXIS DANZ - As a group of flag dance professionals, Axis Danz combines the lyrical and interpretive qualities of individual flag dancing with the powerful visuals of ensemble work. The results
have been fresh and dramatic and have energized events across the country. Audiences have
embraced the concert work wholeheartedly, amazed by its energy, novelty and emotional impact.
Recent choreographed works have included "Forces Within and Out", "Winter's End", "Open
Heart", "Revolution", "Trippin" and "Let The Sun Shine". Each with its own unique look and
style. Empowered by a tremendously positive response, Axis Danz remains committed to challenging this technique further--and will continue to pioneer new vistas of creative expression. Because of the company's connection to the community that gave birth to modern flag dancing, Axis
Danz is dedicated to preserving this art form and to recognizing those who have been its biggest
inspiration. We acknowledge the fact that flag dancing was nearly lost during the AIDS epidemic;
so therefore, Axis Danz will continue to participate in a variety of AIDS fundraising efforts. It is our
desire to support those in the community struggling to flourish in a society that still denies many
people their intrinsic right to be.

jULIAN BARNETT project - brings a new voice and interpretation to contemporary dance and
art. Artistic Director Julian Barnett articulates the desire for movement to transcend beyond the
tactile body. Combining a sophisticated technique, physical theater, and cinematic design, his
work and dancers elicit abandon that thread through to a precise and virtuosic vocabulary, tugging with emotion and gravity. The work searches for a physical catharsis where violence and
grace can meet to push beyond conventional interpretations of contemporary performance. http://
