Pages and Weights
AJC In-paper Insert rates are based on number of tab-size
pages. Tab pages measure between 97 and 138 sq. inches. For
rates on larger standard size pages, the number of pages must
be doubled to determine the number of tab pages for rating
purposes. REACH rates are based on weight, not the number of
pages. Quotes on rates are estimates only, until actual size, page
counts, weights and distribution can be verified by the publisher.
Inserts are billed based on the actual number of deliveries,
rounded to the nearest thousand.
Out of Spec Inserts
Inserts with the following characteristics may pose problems for
machine insertion. Please check with your sales representative
to arrange to test these inserts for production capability before
placing an insertion order.
• Non-rectangular, tri-fold, or die-cut, special-shape inserts.
Accordion folds cannot be accommodated.
• Inserts of inconsistent thickness (non-uniform thickness or a
lump in an insert, pre-stuffed inserts).
• Inserts that stick together and do not separate consistently.
Preprint Requirements

Note: The bound side of both minimum and maximum sized products must be
on the longest side.
Pieces not meeting these specifications cannot be accepted for machine
insertion. Additional charges for distribution may apply.
Stock Specifications
Minimum Thickness: 0.005”
Minimum thickness is for single sheets, cards, and envelopes.
Standard broadsheet inserts printed on 30-lb. newsprint should
be 8-pages minimum. Inserts of less than 8-pages may need to
be quarter-folded for insertion. Standard tabloid-page inserts
printed on 30-lb. stock should be a minimum of 8-pages.
Maximum Thickness: 1/4”
Maximum thickness on standard broadsheet inserts printed on
30-lb. newsprint should be limited to 96-pages.
Reservation Deadlines
Reservation deadline is 30 calendar days before publication. No
inserts are accepted for AJC In-paper Insert delivery on Saturday.
Inserts ordered less than 17 days in advance of publication are
subject to additional charges. To make reservations contact your
account executive.
Insert pages that are glued, stapled, stitched, perforated or
perfect bound.
• Objects such as keys, coins, CDs, etc., attached to any page
of an insert; sachets containing scented objects; liquids or
shampoos; poly-bags; paper bags; product samples.
Inserts for shared or solo mail coverage (REACH/ZIP) must be
submitted for testing and for checking postal regulations prior to
acceptance for insertion
Some of these out of spec inserts may be accepted as product
samples and may be hand inserted in the field by carriers at an
additional cost.
REACH and AJC In-paper Preprint
Preparation Requirements
• AJC In-paper preprint delivery to subscribers seven days a week
usually are not machine inserted. Inserts must be shipped to us
in durably cross-tied bundles of 200.
• There may be an additional charge for pieces not tied.
• Multiple version inserts running on the same day must have
two-digit version coding clearly printed on the front of the insert
at the lower right and inserts for multiple dates must be clearly
identified on separate skids and on the bill of lading.

ith the standard Bill of Lading (BOL), each pallet should
have a pallet label displaying the following:
a. Advertiser Insert name (and version if applicable)
b. Description of the piece (e.g. 8.5 x 11 Labor Day Sales)
c. Distribution method (e.g. AJC, REACH, Opt In, etc.)
d. Publication Date
e. Inserts per turn and lift
f. Total bundles or boxes on pallet
g. Total number of pieces
h. T
otal pallet weight (including inserts and packing materials)
In addition to the above, if there are multiple advertising jobs or job
versions on the same skid, clearly identify:
a. Each advertiser
b. Each version
c. Publication date for each order or version
5. I t is preferred that each insert version should be placed on a
separate pallet with appropriate labeling.
6. P
allet tops should be made of hardwood or sturdy synthetic
and be the same size as the pallet base.
7. A
minimum of four bands should be used to
secure load.
8. B
anding should be tight without pulling down
and bending the top turn or pulling loose the
pallet flooring.
Required Preprint Pad
For inserts meeting these guidelines, and orders with a draw of
less than 25,000 copies to be inserted, the pad should be 5%
with a minimum of 500 copies to cover machine setup, waste
and damages. For orders with draw of 25,000+ the pad should
be 5% of the total draw for 2 page tabs, 3% for 4+ tab pages. A
higher percentage pad may be required for out-of-specification
inserts, especially for single page flyers and inserts printed on
lightweight papers.
Preprint Deliveries
Delivery to Newspaper Deadline
Inserts should be delivered between 17 and 10 days prior to
publication date. Inserts delivered more than 30 days in advance
of publications are subject to a storage charge.

Maximum image size is .5” less on top and bottom, and 1.5” less
on either end than bag sizes stated above.

Additional Charges
$325 plate charge per color, per side (black is considered a
color); $3 per thousand per color for printing additional (back)
side.
Ad Materials
Design/layout/production/proof by the paper or digital
material may be provided by client. Allow a minimum of 1/8"
between colors (standard PMS colors). Screen tints are not
recommended, half-tones not accepted. Choking hazard warning
will be added if not supplied by artist.

Mechanical Requirements
• The ad must be the correct size with all elements placed inside the ad area.

Printing materials needed: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is
totally paginated, meaning all pages are produced solely from
digital files. Advertisers are strongly encouraged to provide
advertising material in an electronic format, PDF preferred. The
AJC no longer accepts Veloxes, negatives and other analog
material.

Electronic Submission of Ads
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is paginated necessitating
all advertising be in a digital format stored in our database.
Advertising received in camera ready format will be placed in our
pagination database.
• Color photos maximum black 50 percent, cyan 85 percent, magenta 85
percent, yellow 85 percent; minimum CMY 3 percent. UCR (under color
removal) or GCR (gray component removal) should not be used.
• All artwork must be prepared as EPS or Tiff files in Photoshop 7.0,
Illustrator 10.0 or earlier version.

The AJC encourages customers to use our fast, efficient, and convenient on-line tearsheet
service from MerlinOne.
• No delays waiting for the mail to deliver hard-copy tearsheets.
• E-sheets available by 10 a.m. on the day of publication.

Proofs
Advertisers desiring a proof of their display ad must submit the ad on the proof deadline. Proofs
will be faxed or e-mailed to the advertiser. When the advertisers receive a proof of display ads,
they must contact their account executive to release the ad. Display advertising placed on a noproof basis is done at the advertiser’s risk. Such ads cannot be changed and are automatically
released for publication.

TERMS & CONDITIONS
By submitting advertising to Cox Enterprises, Inc. d/b/a The
Atlanta Journal-Constitution for publication, you (“You” or
“Advertiser”) agree to be bound by AJC’s Advertising Terms
and Conditions. Please read them. To qualify for contract
rates, You must enter into a signed, written agreement
with AJC that incorporates the Advertising Terms and
Conditions. In the absence of such signed, written
agreement, any and all advertising that You submit to AJC
for publication will be considered for publication and/or will
be published in accordance with these Rate Book Terms and
Conditions and the Advertising Terms and Conditions, which
together will constitute a binding agreement between You
and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Commission
Retail rates are not agency commissionable. CAP rates are
agency commissionable. See the General rate card for CAP
rates.
Volume Agreements
A signed written agreement is required for volume discounts.
Agreements can be backdated to the first day of the month
in which they are issued. Revenue based annual agreements
must be dated the first day of the month in which the
first ad appears. Advertisers may choose to “Step-Up” or
“Step-Down” volume commitments, as described in the
Advertising Terms and Conditions.
Who Qualifies for Retail Rates
Retail advertising rates apply only to advertising done
by firms that sell to the public through one or more local
Georgia locations in the Atlanta CBSA which they own or
control. Retail rates do not apply to any advertising for which
the publisher has established or will establish other rates,
such as General or Classified. Notwithstanding anything
in this rate book to the contrary, advertising designated by
publisher for special classification categories is subject to
applicable rates as determined by the publisher. Please
contact Your AJC account executive for more information.
All advertising space is for the sole use of the Advertiser;
brokerage of space to third parties is strictly prohibited.
Simulating News Style
Any ad simulating news style must be labeled “Paid
Advertisement” in 7 point or larger font size. In ads 3
columns or larger, “paid advertisement” must appear 2 or
more times. The following fonts may not be used: Publico,
Boomer or Boomer Serif families. Body Copy must be Sans
Serif font. Ad must have at least a 1 point border.
Payment Policy
All rates are cash with order except where credit has been
approved in writing by AJC. Until credit is established, all
advertising will be paid at the open rate until a lower rate is
earned. Payment terms are as set forth in the Advertising
Terms and Conditions.
Amendments to Rate Book
AJC reserves the right to amend or revise the terms,
conditions, rates and any other provisions specified in this
rate book, including these Rate Book Terms and Conditions,
upon 30 days notice in writing. If such amendments or
revisions are to material terms and are not acceptable
to Advertiser, Advertiser may cancel any advertising
agreement(s) in place with AJC at the time of such
amendments or revisions by providing written notice of
cancellation to AJC within such 30-day period.
Discounts
Discounts are taken sequentially off the base cost (inches
x rate) of an ad; e.g., a second discount is taken off the
net cost after the first discount is deducted from the base.
Multiple discounts cannot be combined and taken as one.
Any questions regarding application of discounts should
be directed to Your AJC account executive or advertising
management.
