Fabrizio claims her second
Women’s Masters crown
Tina Fabrizio, with her daughter, Taeler
Tina Fabrizo defeated Christine Episcopo,
438-426, to win her second Post-Standard
Women’s Masters title in four years March 16
at Bowl Mor Lanes.
In the championship round, Fabrizio eliminated Anne Connor then beat previously undefeated Episcopo twice to claim the crown.
Fabrizio (7-1) avenged her only loss of the
tournament by beating Episcopo.
Fabrizio, who won the Masters in 2011,
earned $1,000 for first place. She is the first
bowler since Julie Sakran (1998-99) to win
two Masters titles. Fabrizio also finished second in 1996. Episcopo settled for second and
$500. Connor, the top scratch qualifier, placed
third and cashed $250.
The tournament had its share of memorable
moments. The match between Fabrizio and

Epsicopo to determine the No. 1 seed in the
championship final was decided by two twoframe roll-offs. The two-game match between
the pair ended in a 448-448 tie. Episcopo prevailed in the second roll-off, 39-26.
A tournament error regarding a player’s
handicap occurred which caused a change in
match play pairings on March 15. Tournament
director Mark MacBain discovered the error
prior to match play March 15. Lisa Potter was
given an incorrect handicap on her score sheet
March 9 for her matches against Anne Connor
and Krystal Ashby.
When Potter’s correct handicap was calculated, it was determined Connor and Ashby
had actually won their two-game matches
against Potter on March 9. Potter, competing
in her first Masters, had two March 9 wins reversed and was eliminated.
MacBain explained how the decision was
made:
“I conferred with (Syracuse Women’s Bowling) Association president and manager which
they referred me to USBC rule 327B regarding scoring errors. We moved the two bowlers
(Connor and Ashby) to the appropriate spots.
We felt it was the best possible solution considering the time frame we were in. We the
tournament regret any error ever happened
and apologize to those bowlers involved.”
Scoring process Rule 327B for scoring errors states:
“After a score has been recorded, it cannot
be changed unless there is an obvious error in
scoring or calculation. Obvious errors must
be corrected by a tournament official immediately upon discovery. Questionable errors
shall be decided by tournament management.
Tournament management may, by rule, set a
time limit for the correction of errors.”

Champion Jim Thomas (left) with tournament
director Bob Hoefer.
The 27th annual Super Bud Bowl at Lighthouse Lanes had another banner turnout with 1,263
entries for the tournament that ran from March 2-9. The total entries included re-entries. The popular
annual tournament drew 1,162 entries last year.
Jim Thomas, of Binghamton, defeated Chris Werner, of Rochester, 188-180, in the championship
final. Thomas cashed $5,500 for first places. Werner earned $2,800 for second.
The top local finisher was Post-Standard Masters champion Art Alexander III who placed tied for
fourth. He won $1,000.
Josh Weatherall was this year’s top qualifier with a 995 four-game total. He finished
tied for 13th. The top 96 qualifiers needed a score of 837 to advance to match play.
There was no roll-off for the 96th spot this year. The low score to cash was 797.
Sixteen former champions competed in the tournament and eight made
the cut. Defending champion Ricky Zinone finished tied for seventh.
There has never been a two-time champion in Bud Bowl history.
Section III girls all-star
team wins state title
Boys and girls teams representing Section III fared well at the state tournament, winning a state
championship in the girls all-star division and medaling in three out of four events.
With Fulton’s Mikayla Guernsey leading the way, the Section III girls all-star team won a state
bowling title March 2 at the Babylon Lanes on Long Island.
Guernsey, a senior, won the high six-game series award with a 1,280 pinfall. Her 213 average was
the highest in the all-star team competition. Britni Flask of Baldwinsville rolled a 268 game, which
was the second highest in the tournament for high game. Section III won the all-star title over Section
VI by 53 pins.
Members of the Section III girls all-star team with tournament average were: Guernsey, Flask
(191), Meghan Doris of Clinton (163), Kate Ely of Fulton (158), Emily Porter of Whitesboro (196), and
Casey Smith of Chittenango (181).
In the team competition March 1, the Auburn girls finished third while the Utica Proctor boys
finished sixth. The state tournament lane conditions, similar to the Section III tournament conditions,
were very demanding and the scoring was low overall.
Junior Kaylee Fallet led the Maroons with a 194 average including a high game of 216. Alyssa
Lawrence had a team-high 225 game and averaged 190. Victoria Bragg, Katie Feocco, Hanna Ryan,
Katelyn Stoddard and Makayla Titus also competed for Auburn.
The Section III boys all-stars finished third.
The all-stars held a slight lead entering the 10th
frame of the sixth game but couldn't maintain
that lead. The boys ended up 50 pins out of first
behind champions and host Section XI. Section
III finished four pins behind second place Section VIII (Nassau County). Andrew Kopec (Auburn) had the third highest six-game block on
the day with a 1,269.
Members of Section III boys all-star team
with tournament average were: Joe Clarke of
Camden (202), Matt Clemons of Oswego (206),
Kyle Denson of Fulton (174), Kopec (211), William Philhower of Sherburne-Earlville (173) and
Mike Woolworth of Oswego (196)
State sportsmanship awards were also handed
out at the tournament. The winners from Sec

HONOR ROLL < Nassauma Adams: Adams knocked off two career milestones in one
night March 5 at AMF Strike N Spare. Adams opened with 12 straight strikes
for her first career perfect game. She finished with her first-ever 700 series
after games of 300, 245 and 182.
Adams’ previous career-best game was a 257 at Lakeview Bowling Center
in Liverpool. Her career-high series was 681. Adams said nerves kicked in
during the 10th frame of her 300 game.
“I felt ok and I was calm all through the game,” she said. “When I rolled the first ball for
the 10 frame, I pulled it and got nervous. But I got a strike.
Adams got a lucky break on her 11th ball as a pin fell over late, she said. She was a bundle
of nerves on her last ball.
“I started shaking and my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest,” Adams
said. “I was chewing gum at the time and started chewing it even faster. I thought this is all or
nothing. I rolled the last ball and that was it.”
Adams was subbing for the Elks Lodge team. The league and spectators stopped to watch
her perfect game including Sheryl Ross, Cherita Henderson, Martha Hudson, Elaine Stroman,
Veronica Adams, Cathy Lamanna, Teri Price and league secretary Ginny Lewis. Adams’
uncle, Fred Lee was also there. Adams selected a ring as her award.
< Kasandra O’Donaghy: O’Donaghy rolled her first career 700
series March 1 during qualifying for the Post-Standard Women’s Masters.
O’Donaghy had games of 257, 225 and 218 for a 700 series. She had only
one open in the three-game set.

Baby on board: Three expectant mothers,
Allie O’Donaghy, Anne Bethmann and Stacy
Hernandez, were among the tournament competitors. O’Donaghy was the only mom-tobe to qualify for match play. It was her ninth
straight year qualifying for match play. She is
expecting her first child in August. Bethmann
gave birth to her first child, son Michael,
March 14.
Luck of the draw: Scratch bowler
— FACT BOX —
2014 Women’s Masters: Inside the Numbers
201: Number of entries, down 20 from last year
590: This year’s cutoff score (three-game handicap
series), up 13 pins from last year.
6: Number of former champions who qualified
280: High scratch game during qualifying by
Anne Connor
Margie Chetney, of Baldwinsville, had 709: High scratch series during qualifying by
one of the tougher match-play draws in the
Anne Connor
tournament.
763: High handicap series during qualifying by
Chetney’s first loss was to fellow scratch
Kasandra O’Donaghy
bowler and 2009 runner-up Michele Edick
532-429. Chetney then defeated scratch
bowler Joanna Carter, former champion Allie O’Donaghy, USBC champion Brittany Signor,
and Martha Hudson, but was eliminated March 9 by former champion Adrienne Turbeville
485-449, in Round 5 of the losers bracket.
Chetney, the 2012 Syracuse Queens champion, averaged 215 in six match-play matches.
“I’m proud to have finished in the top 16,” Chetney said. “Of course, it’s always disappointing to be eliminated from a tournament that you really want to win, but I can’t be upset
by losing to two of the top scratch bowlers in Syracuse. It was a tough draw. I bowled above
my average all weekend, but came up short. There’s always next year!”

Hall of famers, champs take part in Masters: This year’s tournament drew
11 former champions and 10 hall of famers.
The former champions who entered were: Sandy Kitching (1989), Roseann DiFlorio
(2006), Adrienne Turbeville (2006), Allie O’Donaghy (2008), Courtney Radick (2012),
Tina Fabrizio (2011), Veronica Adams (2004), Donna Dwyre (2009), Colby Stejbach
(2005), Linda Nichols (1995) and Jennette Adams (1996).
Six former champions qualified. They were: DiFlorio, Turbeville, O’Donaghy, Fabrizio,
Stejbach and Nichols, who grabbed the last qualifying spot.
The hall of famers who competed were: Rosa Moro, Teri Gonzalski, Sherry McClusky,
Fran Piraino, Kitching, DiFlorio, Fabrizio, V. Adams, Stejbach and J. Adams.
Skins Game: At the conclusion of the Women’s Masters, the Skins Game, a side tournament for scratch bowlers, was held. The players who qualified were (with their scratch
qualifying series): Tina Fabrizio (704), Heidi Felix (685), Seline Weiskopff (669), Krystal
Ashby (669), Roseann DiFlorio (631), Nicole O’Brien (629), Dee Cote (625) and Michele
Edick (623). Kim Fox (618) is the alternate.
Sarah Felix (left) and her
mother, Heidi, got matching
bowling polo shirts for
Masters match play at
Bowl Mor Lanes. Sarah
Felix picked an aqua blue
shirt while Heidi selected a
purple one.
Tourney acknowledgements: Tournament director Mark MacBain wanted to acknowledge the tournament sponsors: Bud Light, Mineo’s Wholesale Co., Santangelo’s
Restaurant and Sam Rao Florist. This year’s tournament staff included Peter Moro Jr.,
Bob Lazzaro, Chris Crowder, Jan Moro, Tom Roberts, Judy Roberts, John Rougeau, Roz
Saxman and Shirley Lafaver.
Pro shop props: Michele Edick admits she knows nothing about bowling equipment.
She leaves those decisions to Dan Smith at the Lakeview Bowling Center Pro Shop. Her Roto
Grip Totally Defiant ball worked well as she rolled a 532 two-game series in her first match.
“(Dan) picked it out,” Edick said. “He drilled it. I tell him I need a new ball and I use
what he gives me.”
2012 Masters runner-up Kristen Vicik also got a new ball this season. But she picked
out her DV8 Diva for no other reason than she liked the pink and black color combination.
Top qualifier Kasandra O’Donaghy also picked up some new equipment for the Masters.
She said George Cavanaugh at Striking Results Pro Shop drilled up a DV8 Diva and a Roto
Grip Hyper Cell. She rolled her first career 700 series in qualifying.
Tina Fabrizio said Butch VanGorden drilled her four-week-old Brunswick Mastermind
for the tournament. Fabrizio entered the final weekend averaging 218.

Sackett Tract League
celebrates its 60th season
The Sackett Tract League, one of the longest-running bowling leagues in Syracuse, has had
several homes in its 60-year history.
The league started out as a two-center travel league at the Polish Home on Park Ave. and the
Polish Legion of American Veterans on West Genesee St. The league expanded in the 1960s
when it bowled out of Ukrainian Club Lanes on S. Wilbur Ave.
The closing of the Ukrainian Club in the mid-1990s moved the league to the Polish American
Citizens Club on Teall Ave. The league now bowls on Thursdays at the Pastimes Athletic Club
on N. Salina St.
The league was featured in a February issue of The Syracuse New Times. To read the story,
go to: http://www.syracusenewtimes.com/lane-changes/.
Here are some facts on the Sackett Tract League provided by league member Jeff Gancarz.
– The league has only had two secretary/treasurers: John Smoral, and Brian Langdon.
– Dominic Cefalo and the current alley manager Art Cornelius are in the Syracuse
Bowling Hall of Fame.
– During the 2012 season, the league lost a tremendous friend, Dan Anderson.
Editor’s note: Joe Cordone brought to the attention of the CNY Striker that the Greater Syracuse
League is officially the oldest bowling league in the city. Cordone has documentation that shows the
GSL started out in the 1930s and is 81-years-old.

Tract League.
League secretary Brian Langdon stands
with his extended family. His father
bowled in the league and his son bowls
in the league.
The league lost a dear friend and fellow
bowler in 2011 (Dan Anderson). Brian
Langdon spoke about Anderson at the
league banquet.
Dominic Cefalo (SBA Hall of Fame
member) is presented with the 2012
Merit Award.
