Parish Outreach
As we start the New Year here at Outreach, we want to thank everyone
once again for their generosity during the holidays and all year round. The
constant support of individuals, families, and parish and community groups
allows us to help address many of the day-to-day needs of people in our
community. During the cold weather, we continue to accept donations of
gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves. Men socks are always needed.
Please do not leave donations outside if Outreach is closed. If you cannot
get here during regular hours, call the office 281-5634 to make arrangements.

The Baptism of the Lord
anuary 2016
Chances are that I will not get to send out individual cards to those who have been so generous to us, and though it has been printed in
the last couple of bulletins… on behalf of Msgr. Heinlein, Fr. Leone and myself, I would like to say a general “Thank-You” to all those
who gave us Christmas gifts of various kinds. Your kindness and generosity through your cards, gifts, chocolates, cookies, goodies and
bottled beverages are very much appreciated and a sure sign of your love and appreciation for your priests. However, if it appears that I
have become a bit pudgier in the last month, it is partially a result of your goodness! Gratitude as well goes out to our friends at Roma
Funeral Home for providing our parish with 2016 religious art calendars.
The St. Jude New Years’ Eve Party was a very enjoyable time, once again. A very big thank-you goes out to Cynthia and Ana for their
many hours of hard work coordinating, ordering, shopping, and setting up (along with the accompanying aggravation) for the big event.
Thanks also to Denise, Julia, and Laura for their help with the setup; and all to those who stayed after – and then returned on New Years’
Day – for the breakdown and general clean up. Thanks to the Anonymous Donor for providing the $750 cash 1st Prize, and to all of our
prize basket donors; to the Kane Family for providing the tables; to John of the Ice Cream Cottage for donating the dee-licious tartufos
for an elegant dessert; and to D.J. Bob for making St. Jude his final gig before official retirement hanging up his CDs from many years in
the dance music providing business. His day job, family, and community service keep him more than busy. Hopefully we will find another
D.J. who plays as good a musical mix for next year. And thanks to all those I have overlooked who also generously assisted in whatever
manner. The event netted over $7,000 for the parish. A very positive start to 2016!
We officially close the Christmas Season today, and so the trees, wreathes, and creche will be taken down this week. However, please be
aware that Lent is coming very soon. Ash Wednesday is February 10th, as Easter Sunday is March 27th. Beginning next weekend there
will be a receptacle in the church vestibule for “Old Palm.” So please bring in any blessed palm that you may have from previous years,
so that it can be burned for this year’s ashes.’
With the arrival of Lent, there will of course be the return of the St. Jude Lenten Friday Fish Fry (try to say that 10x fast!) in the parish
center beginning Friday, February 12th and concluding on March 18th. In addition to the fried fish fillet, there will also be a pasta alternative available each week. Msgr. Heinlein has been working on his fish-stories over the summer and fall, so we look forward to new tales
of adventure on the high seas and yarns about “the one that got away.”
Save the date! The Ancient Order of Hibernians will be hosting a St. Patrick’s Day Party in the parish center on Saturday, March 5th.
Profits after expenses will benefit the St. Jude Shrine-Chapel Capital Campaign. In addition to corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, soda bread,
beer, and other requisite fare, there will be live music provided by Gabe Hickey and his ensemble. So for those parishioners who have
been asking about a St. Patrick’s Day Party for years, your wait is over! Further details will follow.
Big thanks go out to Wendy Gross for all her fruitful work with the Children’s Choir. I am so happy to see how many more children have
joined and are lending their voices to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” They did a lovely and enthusiastic job of singing and enacting
the Story of our Lord’s Nativity for us. We look forward to the children’s Palm Sunday procession as they serve the Lord in public worship at holy Mass. If your children might be interested in joining, please see Mrs. Gross or our music director, Mr. Michael LaSalle, after
Mass.
The Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. will take place on Friday, January 22nd. The March brings attention to the 3,500 babies
who die everyday in the United States due to legalized abortion which has been “blessed” by our government since 1973, and which is
heavily supported by our tax dollars. If you are interested in witnessing in peaceful protest for our Lord and the babies in the cause for
Life, please see the ad on page N of this bulletin with information on bus transportation to Washington and back. If you are hesitant about
going because of the cost, please see me, as an anonymous donor will gladly cover your whole expense.
A parishioner recently contacted me in regard to the campaign for the Shrine-Chapel, inquiring (1) as to what it will be used for, and (2)
wanting permanently affixed pews instead of moveable chairs. These are very legitimate questions. As to the former, I have addressed the
uses of the Chapel quite a number of times in this column; also in my talks at Mass; and at the numerous presentations which were offered
both in the rectory and after Masses, which were open for all to attend. And so, the intention is for the new Shrine-Chapel to be used for
Daily Mass and open for daytime visiting; smaller funerals, weddings and baptisms; adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; other devotions
and spiritual meetings such as the Rosary Altar Society meeting to pray the holy Rosary on the First Monday of the month; the Tuesday
night Spanish Prayer Group meeting; baptismal preparation and Bible study meditation-prayer-reflection groups may also be a possibility.
Days/Evening of Recollection…
We do not plan or anticipate the Chapel being used for anything but for that which is sacramental-spiritual. Yet I will elaborate on this
further within the next few weeks in this column, as well as address the question of permanent vs moveable seating, which is a very interesting topic. And I will speak about it, as well, since not everyone reads the bulletin! And please, if you still have not made a pledge or
gift to the campaign and have questions or concerns, please call our campaign director, Andy White, or speak with me. The greater the
success of this campaign, the better and more beautiful our parish will be well into the future, by the grace of God and your sacrifices. To
whatever degree you are able, thank-you for your support!
In Christ, Fr. Greg

Book of the Week
Consoling the Heart of Jesus –
Fr. Michael Gaitley, MIC
Lighthouse Catholic Media News
In his thoughtful and prayerful “Do-It-Yourself Retreat,” Fr. Michael Gaitley brings together several spiritual traditions and blends them in the pattern of the
Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. We will find inspiration in the quotations from the saints that he gathers
carefully and in his deep, but humble, understanding
of the principles of holiness that they proclaim. This is
a good way for a soul to begin the journey in responding to the call to embrace the Divine Mercy of the
Lord.
We’re pleased to announce that two new scripture study
series, including one by Dr. Scott Hahn, and four at-home
retreats by Fr. Michael Gaitley, are available on formed.

St. Vincent de Paul
As Jesus was baptized by John, so must we be baptized –not just in the waters of repentance but by the Holy Spirit and fire which calls us too, to give
ourselves to God. The fire of the Holy Spirit gives us the grace to be God’s
presence for another: “The best thing to give…to your enemy is forgiveness;
to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a mother, reverence; to your father, conduct that will make him
proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all people, charity.” Join the Society of

New Year’s Eve Dance
The music kept us dancing all night, the food
was delicious and the company was even better. We are thankful for Bob Vecchio who has
been the D.J at our party for quite a few years
and sorry to say this was his last, he is now
officially retired. We hope you all had a joyful
time and wish you all A Blessed New Year. The
event raised $7,427.05. for our parish of St.
Jude.
We are very grateful for the donations from
the following contributors:
Lee Anne’s Flower Shoppe- table centerpieces
Ice Cream Cottage- delicious tartufos
Kane Family- provided tables
Joe Vernice- printed dance tickets
Our Community Library- loaned projector, allowed us live feed from Times Square
We appreciate the generous donations we
received for the raffle prizes from:
Seafield Center ($750 cash), Three Peaks
Physical Therapy, Phyllis Albertina, Renee Spaziante, and our anonymous donors.
We thank you for the support of the New
Year’s Eve Raffle by both party attendees and
prior ticket donations @ Mass. The following
individuals were the prize recipients:
1st prize- S. Bartholomew, 2nd prize L. Hickey,
3rd prize G. Halversen, 4th prize R. Berkhout,
5th prize M. Haase, and 6th prize Goldstein.
A special thank you to those who helped us
with the set-up, clean-up, 50/50 and raffle

P.S. If you took the centerpiece vase, we
would appreciate you returning it to the rectory. Thank you.
Jesus, whom God called “my beloved Son,” is also the “servant” of whom Isaiah speaks in the first reading. We who are
baptized in Christ must follow His example and use our time and resources in the service of God and neighbor.
