From Pastor Chris’ Pen
“Now the Lord said to Abram ‘Go from
your country and your kindred and your
father’s house to the land that I will
show you. I will make of you a great
nation…and to your offspring I will give
this land.’”
Genesis 12:1-2,7
Abraham was seventy-five years old
when he received those instructions
from God. The scriptures don’t fill in
for us the ensuing conversation
between Abraham and his wife, or his
extended family and farm hands. I can
only imagine. The Book of Genesis
does tell us “Abraham went, as the
Lord had told him”, and goes on to tell
the (somewhat convoluted) story of
exactly how the Lord fulfilled promises
of land, greatness and offspring to a
man approaching his 100th birthday.
The story has been encouraging—and
sometimes frightening—to me
personally, as I journey this earth
attempting to follow the Lord’s
direction. As a pastor, it’s also
reassuring to be reminded that God’s
call and plan don’t always present
themselves in what we humans might
consider ideal timing. Nevertheless,
God’s plans and promises will be
fulfilled.
Long ago I knew my heart was drawn to
ministry as a chaplain, that is, providing
spiritual care and direction to people in
acute and long term health crises. I
have enjoyed and learned a great deal
from my fifteen years of parish
ministry, yet I have recently felt that
God has still another adventure in
store.
Consequently, I am resigning my call as
Pastor at OSLC effective Sunday, July 10.
As I approach my 55th birthday, I am
pleased to share that the Lord has
extended a new vocational calling to me.
(I’m also pleased God has done so before
my 100th birthday, and that, unlike
Abraham and Sarah, there is apparently no
birthing of children involved! ) On
Monday, July 11 I will begin a call to
specialized ministry as Director of Spiritual
Care at Benedictine Living Community,
at St. Scholastica.
You have chosen wise and dedicated
leaders at OSLC, and they are already in
conversation with the Synod office. The
word “synod” means literally “to walk
alongside”, and this is an appropriate word
to convey that the members of Christ’s
Body at OSLC are not alone in this journey
of discovery. Mrs. Brenda Tibbetts, Asst to
the Bishop, will be working closely with
the PPC to appoint an interim pastor, who
will in turn walk with you in discerning the
next steps in Our Savior’s pilgrim journey.
The Lord is calling all of us to a new land of
promise.
In the meantime, Sunday morning worship
and Holy Communion will continue as
usual. My thanks, affection and prayers
for you will continue as always. May we
all, like Abraham and Sarah, find fulfillment in the journey of discovering God’s
promises!
Blessings,
Pastor Christine Anttila

We are thankful for our church and our members!
On Thursday, May 26, 2016, about 25 members gathered to
listen to Mike Bail and Jenn Conboy's ideas of why church
growth is a strong possibility. Afterwards, small group discussion lasted over an hour! The room was buzzing with
interest and ideas.

To the members of OSLC:
For those who have not heard yet, I will be leaving the

here and I will miss many of you immensely.

American Heart Association Fundraising for Team Theo
will start this 2016 year on July 17, 2016. I am the
Great- Aunt to Theodore Lee Hein from North Little Rock,
Arkansas. He was born almost 4 years ago with heart
disease specially called Shone’s Complex which is
restricting blood flow both in and out of his heart on the
left side. He was operated on at 7 days old, he was then
operated on at 2 months old shortly before we met him in
October 2016. He will need another surgery in the very
near future. I am walking at the heart walk on September
24, 2016 at Bayfront Park. I have tax deduction slips for
those of you that are genuinely caring of families and
people with heart disease. Please consider a donation to
Team Theo. We raised $115.00 in 2015 at OSL. In the past
we have raised almost $2000.00 for American Heart
Association. Thank you so very much!

July is National Ultraviolet Safety
Month. A time to shine the light on
the perils of UV rays and spread the
message of sun safety.
As summer gets into full swing we welcome the season
with pool parties, beach trips, barbecues, picnics, etc.
During these warm summer months we spend most of
our time outdoors. Sun exposure is recommended
because it's our primary source of vitamin D which is
necessary for calcium absorption for stronger healthier
bones; but like everything else moderation is key.
UV rays are the sun's "invisible" burning rays. They cause
damage to our skin and too much exposure can lead to
harmful skin reactions such as sunburn, skin texture
changes, premature aging, and skin cancer. It can also
cause eye damage including cataracts, macular
degeneration, and cancer of the eye or eyelid. The more
intense the sun, the greater your exposure to UV rays.
The amount of UV that will reach you depends on the
following:
• Time of Day - UV is greatest between 10 AM - 4 PM
when the sun is highest in the sky.
• Season - While UV exposure is greatest in the summer
(May-August) in the US, it's important to practice sun
safety year round, including wintertime. Snow reflects
85-90% of the sun's UV rays.
• Altitude - The air is cleaner and thinner at higher altitude so UV exposure is greater in the mountains than in
valleys.
• Location - UV is strongest at the equator and diminishes as you move towards the poles.
• Exposure Time - The longer you're out in the sun, the
more UV rays you receive.
Consider the following statistics and your own exposure
risks to the sun's harmful UV rays.
• You can sunburn even on a cloudy day.

So what can we do to protect ourselves from UV
damage.
• Go for the Shade - Avoid or limit sun exposure between 10 am to 4 pm when the sun's UV rays are
most intense.
• Wear protective clothing - Long sleeve shirts and
pants are ideal as well as broad-brimmed hats that
shade the face, ears, and neck.
• Apply a broad spectrum sunscreen - Generously
apply water-resistant sunscreen with a SPF value of at
least 15 or higher. Reapply every 2 hours and after
swimming and sweating, even if it's labeled "waterresistant".
• Pick up those stylish sunglasses
Effective sunglasses should block glare and 99 to 100
% of UV rays and have a wraparound shape to protect
the eyes from all angles.
