I often view it.
(Michael Farraday)
Many share the sentiments of Mr. Farraday, inventor of the electric motor. With a world almost completely covered in water, we encounter many distinctive
scenes in nature featuring water’s ability to inspire awe, wonder, serenity, comfort and calm. We have selected 12 special and unique scenes of water’s
many forms to feature in the 2015 PACE calendar.
As we admire these natural water wonders, the notion of water’s life sustaining elements and its impact on all life-forms is not lost. As water resource
engineers, we spend our days seeking and applying methods to co-exist, extract and maintain the majestic and limited resource we all depend on so
heavily. Internationally, many tactics and techniques are being tested and applied to ensure that future generations benefit from clean and plentiful
water supplies. A sampling of these approaches are featured within this calendar as we share a pictorial journey to near and far in our 2015 showcase of
inspirational natural waterscapes.

HAVASU FALLS, ARIZONA
The Havasu Canyon is home to the Havasupai (which means “people of the blue-green water”) Tribe and
boasts colorful waters and falls, the most spectacular of these is Havasu Falls. Havasu Falls gets its blue
color from the magnesium in the water. As the pools deepen and calcium carbonate is slowly released
from the water, the bluer the water appears as the relative magnesium content increases.

Water Conservation – Arizona created the Assured Water Supply program as part of the historic 1980 groundwater management act, to protect groundwater supplies within active management areas
(AMAs) and to ensure that people purchasing or leasing subdivided land within an AMA have a water supply of adequate quantity and quality. Typically, new subdivisions must demonstrate that a 100year assured water supply is available to serve the subdivision before sales can begin.

LEFTHANDER’S DAY
River Restoration & Management –The Arizona Water Protection Fund (AWPF) provides a coordinated effort for the restoration and conservation of the water resources of Arizona’s rivers, streams
and associated riparian habitats, including dependent fish and wildlife resources. One project, the Reduction of Erosion and Sedimentation along the Lower San Pedro River resolved massive erosion
problems that were a function of the alteration of natural historical washes as land was cleared and leveled for agricultural purposes, through reconstruction of two historic washes, re-vegetation of
native plants, and re-contouring the transition between the uplands and the terrace.
