Dear Readers –
Spring is in the air. For us here at the NewsTribune Springtime brings an opportunity to
showcase the many outstanding people involved in business, industry, health care and
social services here in the Illinois Valley.
Much has been written of late of the sad state of the budget situation in Illinois. We
hope you’ll take some time to review the positives our community has to offer and that
you’ll enjoy your glimpse of the good things happening right here.
From our news to advertising to design to press staffs, many people have put forth effort to present this
package to you.
Best wishes for a wonderful Spring 2016!

master plan for future
La Salle-Peru Township
High School District 120
has tackled some difficult
questions over the past several
years. Questions such as: How
to better prepare students for
college and the workforce?
How to improve learning
spaces to provide better
opportunities in Science,
Technology, Engineering
and Math (STEM)? How to
improve safety and security
on campus? How to improve
energy efficiency to save
taxpayer dollars?
A committee of more
than 40 people — including
faculty and district staff,
students, architects and other
community members —
spent many months
developing a comprehensive
Facility Master Plan to answer
those questions.
The original plan defined

LPHS Board of Education felt

too large and too costly, and
downsized the proposal by
$28 million to $67 million.
The downsized plan
calls for the following
improvements to La SallePeru Township High School:
■ Add a new Science,
Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) wing to the
southeast side of campus.
■ Replace an outdated,
energy-inefficient HVAC
system.
■ Improve accessibility for
students, staff and visitors
with disabilities.
■ Address critical life/safety
and security improvements.
■ Renovate outdated
classrooms.
■ Improve energy efficiency
— and save taxpayer dollars.
A new group of community
members is now in the process
of reviewing the revised plans
in order to provide guidance
to the Board of Education on
the future of LP’s campus. LP
looks forward to sharing more
information on this revised
plan with the community in
the coming months. Keep
an eye out for additional
updates and building tour
opportunities on the LP
website, www.lphs.net.

The Center for Youth and Family Services
brings families together
Rick and Connie Falcon
have received assistance
from the Center for Youth
and Family Solutions. In
September, the Falcons
adopted their foster children
of three years, biological
siblings, Cody, 6, and Kelly, 7.
Connie Falcon said she and
her husband had been looking
into adopting children, when
an opportunity arose to be
foster parents.
“They were great with
answering our questions,”
Connie Falcon said. “We
never felt like our needs
weren’t being met.”
For example, she said
without Center for Youth and
Family Solutions, she would
not have been able to provide
family medical histories for
Cody and Kelly.
“I didn’t have their
background, and we couldn’t
do it,” Connie Falcon said.
Families who choose to
foster or adopt children
through the center have a
caseworker committed to
them as long as they use the
center’s services.
The Falcons said
transitioning from being
foster parents to adoption
worked out great.
“It actually became a good
process for them,” Connie
Falcon said. “We also needed
kids that were right for us. We
were able to see how they fit,
and they were a great fit.”
She said the open adoption
has also allowed the children
to have contact with their
biological parents, and she
said people considering
becoming foster parents
should not be wary.
“We do recommend it,”
Connie Falcon said. “As long
as people are realistic — your
life kind of goes on someone
else’s schedule…It really isn’t
that different from having
your own.”
The Center for Youth
Biological siblings Cody, 6, and Kelly, 7, giggle while they play a rockpaper-scissors game. In September, they were adopted by Rick and
Connie Falcon, who have been helped by the Center for Youth and
Family Solutions.
and Family Solutions also
encourages families to
consider foster care.
“We need foster families
desperately,” said Erin
Pocivasek, a foster care
licensing worker for the
Center for Youth and Family
Solutions. “We constantly
have kids that need a home.”
She added in addition to
foster care and adoption,
the nonprofit serves nearly
1,600 individuals in the
La Salle area and 20,000
people statewide who are
experiencing trauma, grief,
abuse and neglect.

Buckman Iron and Metal Co.
honors its founder
For four generations,
Buckman Iron and Metal Co.
has been family owned, from
its beginnings in 1902, when
Charles Buckman loaded
industrial scrap metal onto
his horse-drawn wagon, to the
current operation with roll off
trucks and hydraulic cranes.
Charles’ son, Maurice,
operated the business until
1956 when his son, George,
became involved.
George grew up in the
family business and helped his
grandfather and father collect
scrap metal throughout the
Spring Valley area as a young
man.
After high school, George
received a football scholarship
to La Salle-Peru-Oglesby
Junior College and then to
Iowa State University, where
he earned his business degree.
Soon after graduating he
returned to assist his father in
the family business.
He grew the Spring Valley
business, acquiring new
industrial accounts from the
factories developing in the
area. During this period,
the scrap industry did not
operate with heavy machinery
and all work was done with
manual labor. George and his
father unloaded scrap metal
from trucks and reloaded it
onto railcars using barrels,
pushcarts, pulleys and ramps.
In 1974, George purchased
the La Salle yard and
modernized the business,
purchasing larger roll off
trucks, forklifts, cable cranes
and a 500-ton guillotine shear.
He also hired more employees
to help with the growing
workload.
In 1980 he expanded
the business even more by
opening a yard in Mendota.
Later, he and his son Arnold
opened a fourth yard in
Ottawa and modernized
their company even more:
Together they purchased hightech equipment, including
Caterpillar trucks and several
Caterpillar hydraulic cranes.
During the 1990s, George
and Arnold started a
new processing center in

Allentown, Pennsylvania.
Later in life, George became
more involved with the
local community. He was a
strong advocate for quality
healthcare. He served on the
Illinois Valley Community
Hospital board for 35 years
and as president for seven
years. He also served on the
IVCH Foundation board for
35 years, dedicating his life to
quality healthcare for the local
community.

Steinberg’s Furniture committed to service
The HGTV Home gallery by Bassett is the latest addition to Steinberg’s
Furniture, which celebrates 127 years of excellent customer service this
year. The family-owned business is along U.S. 6 on the west end of Peru
at 3025 Fifth St. and offers the area’s best furniture, great service and
the best deals in town. Stop by today to learn how their dedicated sales
staff can help make your dream design a reality in your home.
A lot has changed at
Steinberg’s Furniture over
the past 127 years, but one
thing has remained the same.
The family owned business
remains committed to
customer service.
“It starts with our sales
staff,” said Bruce Steinberg, the
fourth generation of his family
to operate the furniture store.
“Their income is not dependent
on commissions, so it creates
a helpful, non-pressured
atmosphere for the customer.
“We also have a full in-store
service department to quickly
take care of any customer
service needs after the sale.”
The store is located on U.S.
6 at the west edge of Peru, just
a block from local icons like
The Igloo and Lou’s LaGrotto.
Though the store’s
front may look small, the
showrooms contain 30,000
square feet of displays
from well-known furniture
brands such as La-Z-Boy,
Bassett, Broyhill, Ashley
and other companies, along
with mattresses from Serta,
iComfort and TempurPedic.
New to the store this year is
the HGTV Home Collection
by Bassett, a gallery of styles
inspired by the popular
television network.
Steinberg’s is a member of
Furniture First, a nationwide
buying group of more than
250 independent stores.
This gives the store the same
buying power as large chain
stores, and the savings are
passed along to the customer.

store, and experiment with

Unytite, based in Peru, moved some of its operations to this new plant in
La Salle to lower electric costs. Unytite makes structural bolts and nuts
and invested about $11 million in the new plant.
Kelley Cawley in downtown La Salle relocated last year into the former
Blakely store building. “It’s fun to see the sidewalks full of people walking
up and down the streets frequenting all of the businesses. Locals are very
conscious of shopping within their community and we can’t thank them
enough for that!” said owner Kelley Cawley-Salazar.
La Salle is growing its
business community
The city of La Salle has
taken the initiative to grow
its business community. From
restaurants to factories to
downtown boutiques, several
businesses have chosen
La Salle as the right place
to grow.
UNYTITE CORPORATION
“The availability of suitable
property, low power cost
and the close proximity to
our Peru location were the
primary reasons Unytite Inc.
chose the city of La Salle to
locate our new manufacturing
facility. During the planning
and building phases of
the project, the city of La
Salle was very engaged and
responsive to our needs. We
are pleased with the decision
to choose La Salle as the
location for our new facility
and look forward to working
with the city of La Salle on
future growth.”
KELLEY CAWLEY BOUTIQUE
“We are so honored to be
included in the incredible
mix of businesses located in
downtown La Salle. This is
such an amazing community
that has grown tremendously
over the years. It’s fun to see
the sidewalks full of people
walking up and down the
streets frequenting all of the
businesses. Locals are very
conscious of shopping within
their community and we can’t
thank them enough for that!”

from the foundation that by
supporting our community,
our community will support
our business. We feel that La

with our company beliefs and
that is why we are proud to
call La Salle home!” — Owner

BECK OIL CO.
“Being a new business in
La Salle, we can easily say
how great this community
is. I personally have never
felt so welcome before by
a community. Together the
people, businesses and local
leaders have gone out of their
way to welcome us here. I
have seen that sense of pride
and support continues with
every new business that has
opened up since then. The city
of La Salle is great, and we are
very happy to be here!” — Cyle
Dickens, store manager

STARVED ROCK BREWERY
“When we decided to
found a brewery, there was
no question we wanted to
return to our hometown area
of Starved Rock country.
Starved Rock Brewery found
a home in La Salle because of
their vision for the future and
dedication to their downtown

Flint Hills Resources
Flint Hills Resources in Peru manufactures expandable
polystyrene (EPS). This product is in the form of small
beads and molded by our customers into products for the
construction and packaging industries. End-use applications
include insulation for roofing and wall systems, road
construction, protective packaging for electronics, consumer
goods, insulated concrete forms and structural insulated panels.
Molded EPS also is used to make packaging products that
allow the shipment of perishables. Visit Flint Hills Resources at
www.fhr.com.
Multiple bin spreading eliminates blending
contamination that can ruin crops. Spreading
multiple products in one pass reduces man
hours, field compaction and fuel consumption by
reducing trips across the field. All these benefits add
up to a higher rate of return on your investment.

June 2016 will mark
25 years of business for
Eakas Corporation at our
Peru location.
From its humble beginnings
as a cornfield north of the
City of Peru, the facility
was originally developed
as 100,000 square feet of
manufacturing space. Through
the years Eakas has continued
to grow substantially, and
today hosts several dedicated
associates who have served
for more than 20 years, in
addition to new generations
that were required to support
the increased business model.
As a Tier 1 automotive
supplier subject to market
fluctuations, we are proud
to continue to support the
Illinois Valley community.
As many in the surrounding
community may remember,
Eakas was originally
established in 1989 by parent
company Sakae Riken
Kogyo, LTD, Co. from Japan
at the request of Mitsubishi
to support North American
manufacturing objectives as
they partnered with Chrysler
to form Diamond Star Motors,
and later becoming solely

America. Fortunately, over
the years Eakas was able to
diversify our customer base,
negating any impact of the
recent closure of Mitsubishi
Motors of North America.
Through foresight and
planning, Eakas experienced
a rebirth after the recession
of 2008 thanks to our 2011
expansion that doubled
the size of our facility. The
expansion added a PoP
(Plating on Plastics) line and
has fueled our employment
numbers. Operating three
shifts per day, five days per
week, we remain optimistic
of our future, provided recent
trends within the automotive
arena are sustained.
Eakas produces decorative
and functional components
for both interior and
exterior of the vehicle.
Door handles, front grilles
and other garnishes are
injection molded, painted

and shipped direct to the
OEM for immediate line side
installation of a car build.
Eakas also will celebrate a
10-year anniversary this year
for its sister plant in
Wynne, Arkansas.

Rod & Jeremy Anchor the IV’s
#1 Morning Show
For reliable, up-to-the-minute news to get your morning started, tune in
Classic Hits 103.9 (AM1220) WLPO.
News director Jeremy Aitken reads the morning news during Thorson’s
morning show. Thorson and Aitken have the Illinois Valley’s most popular
news-talk show and are a popular tandem for residents seeking the news
of the day.
The morning news and talk
show features longtime radio

Thorson and Aitken have

“Ours is the most listenedto morning radio show in
the Illinois Valley,” said

That community is larger
than most people suspect.
Though the radio signal

Princeton to Ottawa and

WAJK and The Wolf have
streaming programming since

the volume of listeners has
grown exponentially.
But the anchor of the newstalk format is the morning
show. Thorson and Aitken
parse news media from
across the nation with funny,
notable and sometimes strange
occurrences to keep listeners
entertained as well as informed.
“They’re not just cut-anddry news reports,” said Mark
Lippert, sales manager for the
stations. “They explore the
stories and make observations
about life in the Illinois Valley.
“For many of our listeners,
Rod and Jeremy are their best
friends in the morning.”
And while Aitken is an
experienced newsman who
gives it to people straight,
Thorson is a commentator
with a knack for getting
people to tune in.
“People like listening to Rod
whether they agree with them
or not,” Spencer said. “He
makes them think.”
Coupled with La Salle

Winding Supervisor Ron Walter and Repair Technician Joe Strack rewind a 9,000-horsepower, 4,000-volt motor with formed coils at Inman Electric
Motors. Inman is the largest service center in Illinois for rebuilding servo and spindle drive motors for the machine tool industry, and also provides
climate and access controlled storage for motors and apparatus of all sizes.
Inman Electric
Motors leads industry
in repair and sales
As a recognized leader in
industrial electric motor repair
and sales, Inman Electric
Motors Inc. continues to
expand its capabilities. Next
year, Inman Electric Motors,
Inc. will celebrate their 50th
anniversary!
The company’s repair
facility and warehouses cover
75,000 square feet of space
over 3.5 acres. Multiple 40-ton
overhead bridge cranes, some
of the largest curing ovens in
the Midwest and the highest
voltage testing capability in a
five-state area allow Inman to
repair and handle very large
motors. Their high voltage test
panel is capable of running
electric motors through
13,000 horsepower at 13,800
volts. During test runs, motors
are secured to a 20,000-pound
steel floor plate on an
independent foundation. Test
results are documented and
provided electronically to
customers.
Inman’s vacuum pressure
impregnation system (VPI) is
12 feet in diameter, one of the
largest in the Midwest. The
system utilizes 8,000 gallons
of high voltage resin for
processing coils and windings
of large electric motors. VPI
provides the ultimate in
rewind quality and electrical
performance. Motors and
generators are processed under
vacuum and pressure with
polyester resin to provide voidfree electrical windings. It is
a 100 percent solid mass that
gives the greatest mechanical
strength, a cooler running
motor, the highest level of
environmental protection and
a long-lasting motor.
Inman provides motor
rebuilding and rewinding
services for power generation
plants, petrochemical plants,
oil refineries, steel mills,
automotive and heavy
equipment manufacturers,
machine tool companies,
cement and sand plants and
other industrial manufacturers.
The sale of new industrial
and agricultural motors is
also a large part of Inman’s
business. In 2015, for the
fifth consecutive year, Inman
received the Outstanding
Distributor Award from
Baldor/Reliance. They are
also a distributor for Toshiba,
Teco-Westinghouse, WEG,
Marathon and Lincoln/

motors. Inman stores over
5,000 customer-owned motors
for 50 individual industrial
plants. Many of these motors
are large high-voltage motors

Each of the warehouses is

monitored.
Inman also is the largest
service center in Illinois for
rebuilding servo and spindle
