SALO
Welcome to Salo
– We can offer you beautiful nature
and plenty of enthusiasm
H
alf an hour's drive from Turku and an hour's
drive from Helsinki you can find Salo - definitely
worth visiting!
The Teijo national park offers activities for
the whole family. For golfers, there are three
international-standard golf courses with the
longest playing seasons in Finland. You can enjoy
exercise and nature all year round - there's downhill skiing, hiking, canoeing, swimming, riding or
even gravity racing.
Manors, mills and museums tell you about the
region's role as an important cultural centre point.
At the art museum Veturitalli you can enjoy art,
and at the Salo electronics museum you can see
old TVs and radios, and learn more about the history of TV and radio manufacturing in Finland,
in Salo in particular. The guided tours introduce
you to many unique attractions.
The popular evening markets on summer
Thursdays from June to the end of August
offer Finnish music performances, trade stalls,
pancakes, second-hand goods and a flea market
for children's clothing.
Shoppers can enjoy individual and knowledgeable service in the many boutiques and shopping
centres. Distances are short and parking is
generally free of charge.
As accommodation, you can choose a hotel in the
city centre, idyllic farm accommodation, a cottage
or a "million star accommodation" under the sky.
This brochure includes selected highlights from
the Salo area. Learn more at VisitSalo.fi
You're welcome to Salo for a day trip or a longer
visit - or you could even stay and live here!

J
esse Kallio was born and raised in Salo and is a nature and
hiking enthusiast. He often takes a camera along and his landscape
photos reflect the beauty of each destination in a skillful way.
According to Jesse, the opportunities for nature tourism in Salo
are excellent all year round. Those who enjoy nature, can for
example, hike, fish, go canoeing, rock climbing, birdwatching , skiing
or skating. Jesse's favorite destination is the Teijo national park, which
is suitable for both beginners and more experienced hikers. Walking
in nature makes you feel refreshed, and as a form of exercise, hiking
is much more interesting than staring at the wall of the gym.
There are altogether about 50 km of marked hiking routes in the
Teijo national park, and the route lengths vary from 1–20 km.
According to Jesse, the national park is ideal for nature lovers looking for a place to spend 1–2 days because by combining routes even
an experienced hiker can easily spend a couple of days in the park.
The area is well taken care of, there are several places for
making bonfires and even good places for spending the night in
a tent or in one of the seven huts in the area. The Teijo national
park has excellent swimming and fishing opportunities, e.g. at lake
Matildanjärvi. It is also possible to find catch-size rainbow trout in
Matildanjärvi because they are stocked regularly.
During the summer months, Jesse sometimes drives straight to
the national park after work, spends the night in a tent or a hut
and drives back to work in the morning because the distances are
short and the nature is at its best. As an active nature enthusiast
he recommends that not only visitors from elsewhere but also the
inhabitants of Salo should head to the Teijo national park for a
hike since it's nearby, easy to hike even with children and certain
to offer memorable experiences!
JESSE'S TIPS:
1. Hiking and camping
The Teijo national park offers activities for both beginners and
more experienced hikers. The Teijo national park is also a great
destination for a weekend trip!
2. Rock climbing
Hyttyskallio and Toravuori are popular summer climbing places
near Salo. In the winter Angelniemi is a fantastic ice climbing
destination.
3. Outdoor activities, swimming and bird-watching
Vuohensaari is a great place to go for an evening walk, a swim
or an excursion. There is also a popular bird-watching tower near
Vuohensaari.
4. Canoeing
There are altogether about 130 km of canoeing routes in the Salo
area. One good route starts from Kisko and passes through Perniö
and the Latokartano rapids all the way to the sea near Särkisalo.

slopes that provide adults with the right level of challenge.
We now have one of the most challenging alpine training slope
with an amazing view from the launch tower.
Taigametsä invites children to experience the joys of downhill skiing!
In a fenced area, children can safely spend the day learning to ski and
take a break in our Lapland hut. The gently sloping back route and
the Bistro slope teach you how to move on the slopes in a fun way.
For winter 2016–2017 we will construct a practice snowboarding area
for small children next to Taigametsä. It will be a safe place to practice
snowboarding – with the right equipment, of course. You can also
encounter a familiar fairytale character in a new element – come and
see who you'll find!
The Ski Resort area also offers a lot of other activities. The best place
in the Salo region for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing - the Teijo
national park wilderness areas begin on the other side of the road.
Skihaus rents, repairs and sells new/used equipment and everything
you need to spend time in the snow and nature. Skihaus Bistro makes
sure you don't go hungry or thirsty - with a smile.

Perniö's mighty matron. We will learn more about this charming little
wooden church.
From there we will move on to the Kalliolaakso Castle which was built by
a couple, who wanted to make their dream come true, and now own the
castle. We'll enjoy some coffee and a tasty pastry, and the owners will give
us a tour of the castle and its garden. The castle's shop offers a selection of
sheep wool products made by the lady of the castle, other handicraft products and other home decoration and gift products.

THE BEST OF THE KING'S ROAD IN HALIKKO 15−18.30
The King's Road aka the Big Shore Road is the main historical road in
Finland, in addition to the Oxen Road of Tavastia. On this excursion we
will travel along the King's Road and visit the Halikko church, its parklike cemetery and G. M. Armfelt's mausoleum.
The route continues over the old Halikko museum bridge to Hajala and
Trömperin Kestikievari (inn) where counts and royals rested during their
hunts. Trömperi is one of the best places to visit along the King's Road.
The oldest parts of the building date back to the 18th century. We will tour
Kestikievari, hear fascinating stories, have some coffee and enjoy the idyllic

SANNI has had gigs in Salo before and says the audience has always been

SANNI is not ready to reveal much about the new album. She is known for collaborating with other artists, and she hopes she can
continue working together with talented artists in the future.
"Although at some point it would be nice to make a really simple album,
just me and a guitar." SANNI ponders. "Maybe in the 2080's..."
SANNI, what is the best thing about summer? "The best things are long
evenings and the white nights, happy people and music festivals. It's nicer
to wait for a taxi when it's not a battle to survive the cold and the snow",
SANNI laughs and wishes a wonderful summer to everyone in Salo.

S
alo’s restaurants invite you to enjoy genuine tastes,
traditional home cooking or flavours from restaurants and cafés
around the world! Our city is surrounded by our pride and joy:
the countryside that produces fresh, delicious food you can
enjoy on the plates of the local restaurants or buy from the farm
shops or marketplaces.
Numerous cafés offer culture and small everyday luxuries,
such as freshly ground coffee and locally produced delicacies.
During the summer, the marketplace in Salo is the place to be.
On summer Thursdays, the evening market offers many cafés,
ice cream stands, traders and of course top-notch performances
as well as a fleamarket for children's clothing.
There are plenty of accommodation options in Salo – choose a
high-quality hotel in the centre, a villa, cosy farm accommodation, your own cottage or a "million star accommodation" in a
tent.

Located in the middle of Salo, next to the railway station, restaurant Salon
Seurahuone offers their customers delicious experiences in an idyllic wooden
house. You can enjoy either lunch or an à la carte dinner in the atmospheric
90-seat restaurant. Comfortable cabinets make it possible to organise many
types of business meetings, negotiations and events at the restaurant. In
addition, the Salon Seurahuone banquet service creates tailor-made events
according to the customer's wishes, from catering to decorating. Our catering
services are available throughout Southern Finland.

Salon Seurahuone is a family business that has been owned by the same
family since 2007. The restaurant is currently being run by mom Eija Hämäläinen
and her children Kalle Hämäläinen and Maija Lehtinen. As parents of small
children, Kalle and Maija think it's important to share the responsibility of
running the business. Sharing the work load among more people also helps
keep the passion strong.
For children &
families
The Chaîne des Rôtisseurs shield awarded to Salon Seurahuone is proof of the
high quality of the food and services. When cooking, strong emphasis is placed
on dishes that have been made from scratch with skill and passion, using local
ingredients. The restaurant's elegant menu changes with the seasons. When
summer approaches, the dishes become lighter, and fish, seasonal vegetables
and Finnish berries are used.

Meat products such as pheasant, lamb and Hereford meat are bought from
local farms, and the fish comes from the Kemiö and Särkisalo regions. The
vege- tables and berries used in the dishes come from local producers, while
various herbs and decorative flowers are grown in their own garden, Maija tells
us. Salon Seurahuone can also boast the most extensive wine selection in the
city, says Kalle who is a qualified sommelier. The restaurant's list includes highquality wines from both the new and the old world. The beer selection includes
the products of many small local breweries such as the Mathildedal village
brewery.
During the summer months, the restaurant's inviting terrace is in heavy use.
The terrace will also serve grilled lunches, Street Food and cocktails, Kalle says.

ART MUSEUM EXHIBITION PROGRAMME 2016
30.1.-15.5. EMOTION IN MOTION - PHOTOGRAPHER JUHA METSO, RETROSPECTIVE
Photographer Juha Metso (b. 1965) is from Kotka and has been successful as both a photojournalist and as a photographic artist. Metso has photographed in over 60 countries, particularly behind the eastern border of Finland
in Karelia and deep into Russia, and also in Africa and Afghanistan. He has been a media photographer for several
Finnish publications, from the daily newspaper Helsingin Sanomat to the weekly magazine Suomen Kuvalehti.
Along with his commissioned assignments, Metso has always created his more artistic work. This includes pictures
for several artists' album covers, as well as books of photographs. Several of the books focus on musicians and
artists who Metso knows personally (e.g. Ville Haapasalo, Kari Peitsamo, Juice Leskinen, Miina Äkkijyrkkä, and the
rock band Sielun Veljet); others are about places that Metso finds interesting, together with the people who live
there - such as Benin with its voodoo culture, and the ceded territories Suursaari and Karelia. The exhibition is a
co-production with Lappeenranta Art Museum.
30.1.-17.4. Studio exhibition in the tower: JUSTIN HOUESSOU, Photo Jeunesse
These are portraits which were taken in the photographer's studio in Grand-Popo, Benin, in the 1960s and 70s.

Salo painter Lyyli Säilä is known mainly for her depictions
of scenes from her local area, but she also produced many
portraits. Säilä often spent her summers in Kustavi, her

saw around her there.
22.10.2016 -22.1.2017 ESTER HELENIUS
The painter Ester Helenius (1875-1955) has retained a place
in Finnish art history as an intense and refined user of colour. She was a resolute artist who was aware of her calling
and who saw fit to paint impulsively. Helenius is primarily
known for her sensitive portraits and floral still-lifes. Classical dance themes, harlequin images, and subjects with religious undertones - such as angels and atmospheric views
of cathedrals - also provided her with the means to express
emotion and beauty. This exhibition is a production of Hämeenlinna Art Museum.

Born in Pertteli, Uuno Eskola's life's work branched out in
many directions. He was an expressionist painter and also a
writer. His novel about artists, The Seductions of Blood, was
published in 1923. Eskola worked in Rauma as a theatre
director, and in Tampere as a set designer and actor. He also
directed one of the first films in Finland at the end of the
1920s. After the war, he created mosaic works for public

artists working in Salo who were friends for decades: Matti
Warén, Uuno Eskola, Viljo Hurme, Lyyli Säilä and Ben Renvall. This exhibition was put together by Salo Art Museum
in order to raise awareness of their works, especially those
of Uuno Eskola (1889-1958) and Lyyli Säilä (1905-1967).

The glamour of

In the Salo Electronics Museum there
are two exhibitions focusing on the
history of Salora Oy.
The Loisto Toisto radio exhibition
presents radios from the 1920s
to the 1980s such as crystal
radios, tube radios and stereos. Pikku
Jättiläinen, Tähti, Riviera and the
other radios demonstrate the history of radio manufacturing in Finland
and in Salo in particular as well as
technical innovations and design - not
to mention inspiring nostalgia. You
can also listen to radio programmes
from various decades and see radios
from different eras. The exhibition
includes a functional amateur radio
station, OH1SALO.
The Televisio auki! exhibition
includes different televisions from
black and white TVs to bulgy CRT TVs
and flat screen TVs. The exhibition
showcases television manufacturing
in Salo and in Finland from the end of
the 1950s until 2005. It tells the story
of technical innovations, design and

The studio and home of painter Viljo Hurme
Together with his wife Aune, painter Viljo Hurme built a house on the shore
of the Ylisjärvi lake in Muurla, with a studio upstairs and living quarters
downstairs. The building was completed in 1946.
The interior downstairs (in the apartment) is original. Many details, for
example, the curtains, are made by Hurme himself. The furniture is original,
made in the 1940s and 1950s. There is also a representative collection of
Hurme's paintings and mosaics.
In 1982 the couple created the Foundation of Painter Viljo Hurme. Once the
couple passed away, the building and their belongings came to be owned by
the foundation.

W
e in Salo are very proud of
our city’s reputation as a good
place for shopping.
In the numerous boutiques
in the centre you can enjoy
leisurely shopping and make
great purchases. There are
already quite a few thirdgeneration shopkeepers in the
boutiques, so the service is
guaranteed to be individual and
knowledgeable.
The high-quality malls and other
shops have broad selections and
the marketplace and especially
the Thursday evening markets
are worth visiting.
Friendly service, no crowds,
good selections, free parking

S
alo is a great place to organise meetings, parties and largescale events. Spend time together and sit down to enjoy the meal
prepared for you.
It's easy to focus on the subject of the meeting in a mansion, at
the ironworks or the countryside, close to nature, where there is
easy to let go of everyday stress and focus on your own thoughts.
For bigger events there are modern and practical facilities with
good connections. They are easy to modify depending on what
they are used for.
The region's various banqueting facilities, mansions, villas and farms
can be used for weddings, large family events or smaller groups.
There are plenty of churches and accommodation options (hotels,
farms, cottages...) depending on the type of the celebration.

The history of Kirjakkala began in 1686 when the ironworks were built. They
were the 11th ironworks in Finland. The old ironworks mansion and three
large log buildings are located in a beautiful grove with tall oaks and lindens
providing shade and the river that flows across the yard creates a soothing
atmosphere.
You can almost smell the cigar of an old factory owner in the park. The
ironworks are located in the Teijo national park by the hiking trails and on
the shore of lake Hamarijärvi, one kilometre from the sea.

alo is a good place to live. Living costs are affordable,
the location is great and you can get from the city to the middle
of nature in no time. Live conveniently in the middle of the city
and the services, in natural surroundings, in a residential area in a
detached house or a row house, in the clean countryside, the idyllic ironworks village or close to your hobbies, with for example
horse riding stables or a golf course next door.

Human values in Salo
"I was extremely surprised when I booked a dentist's appointment in Salo for
the first time. The person at the other end of the phone was really sorry for
not being able to give me an appointment sooner than in three weeks. I just
said it was no problem, I'll take that appointment", says Miia Tanskanen who
has lived in Helsinki for 15 years. "When I lived in Helsinki I never once got a
public dentist appointment." Trying to get an appointment at the maternity
clinic was a similar experience. "In the maternity clinic in Salo they were sorry
that we had to wait two weeks since our nurse was on holiday. When we lived
in Etu-Töölö in Helsinki, the maternity clinic was booked so full we had to wait
months to get the maternity clinic visits running after our child was born."
Tanskanen is from Uusikaupunki and her husband Janne is from Kaarina. They
have both lived in several cities, but neither had lived in Salo before. "Once
we had a child it was obvious that we would like to provide a childhood experience similar to the ones we ourselves had growing up in smaller towns. Salo
seemed like a good place, relatives in Turku are nearby and our jobs in Helsinki
aren't too far", Tanskanen says.
A year later, they rented a place in Salo and have now begun building their
own house near the city centre. "Life in Helsinki was completely different.
The only thing we have regretted is that we didn't move here sooner!" "Our
quality of life here is completely different. Services and housing are affordable
and our child can go out to play and visit the neighbours without any worry."
"The people in Salo have been very welcoming. They take more contact and
come to chat with you, it's a pretty big difference to the metropolitan region.
The friendliness and warmth has been lovely." Tanskanen believes that the
sense of community is reflected in the wide variety of events in Salo. "The
evening market is really impressive! In general, there's always something happening every weekend and the recreational opportunities are endless. Skate
parks are free and the swimming hall and sports park are top-notch."
Tanskanen considers the quality of services here to be excellent in general. You
can tell there have been budget cuts, of course, but compared to the family's
previous experiences, the services are really extensive and functional. "Things
are also handled differently from what we're used to. Here the authorities and
customer service people treat you as an individual."

Safe and smooth
everyday life
"Salo is a city of just the right size, people know each other and the atmosphere is good", describes Minna Katila who has moved back to Salo. "It feels
safe and easy to live here."

Minna Katila, like her husband Kari, grew up in Salo. She left the city to study
and lived in Turku for 10 years before returning to Salo. "We got to know
Turku well and still visit there quite often. It takes about 30 minutes to drive
there from Salo along the motorway", Katila says. "Based on our experiences
you can get everything from Salo but it's fun to sometimes visit a bigger city."
Turku is so close that it's effortless to visit."

Despite their active connection with Turku, the Katila family appreciates the
range of services and activities Salo has to offer. "Our hobbies tend to have
something to do with exercise. The Salo region has everything our family
needs. There are ice arenas, sports parks, horse riding stables, golf courses,
even a ski centre and many well-run outdoor recreational areas. Here you're
always close to nature, almost everyone can easily reach a forest by walking
out of their door."
Minna Katila also appreciates the numerous shops in the Salo city centre.
"Salo has a small but lively centre with lots of little shops. You can get very
individual service here", Katila describes her experiences.

Katila lives in Salo but goes to work in Helsinki on a daily basis. She has been
travelling on the train for several years. "I like taking the train to work. I start
working on the train and when I get to Helsinki I'll already have worked 1,5
hours. Getting to the office is a nice opportunity to stretch my legs. On the
return journey I'll complete the work and ideas for the day and it helps me
avoid bringing work home." Katila hopes that VR Train Services will consider
the needs of commuters and won't price their services on important routes
too steeply or cut the number of trains per day so people have to stop using
them. "The train connection is crucial for people who want to live in Salo and
go to work in Helsinki on a daily basis."

Katila describes the atmosphere in Salo as happy and relaxed. "There are a lot
of events and family-friendly activities in Salo." There are plenty of regional
tourism options for every taste. Katila especially enjoys Teijo, during both the
winter and the summer.

Salo is a comfortable and affordable place to live.
In Salo, you can buy a house with the price of a one-room flat in Helsinki. The city offers
a versatile selection of lots and the prices start from 200 € – prices per square meter start
from 0.20 €. You can choose whether you want to build in the city or in one of its nearby
conurbanations – e.g. Särkisalo, Suomusjärvi or Halikko.
Karhumäki in Särkisalo fulfills the wishes of those who yearn to live near the sea. Choose
your favourite location, near the sea. Your neighbours are also likely to be families with
the same aspirations because in Särkisalo the boating season is temptingly longer since the
piers, harbours and navigable routes are not far away. Karhumäki is also ideal for people
working from home.
Think of all the possibilities offered by the Lehtometsä and Tyrynmäki areas in Suomusjärvi.
Schools and other services are closeby and the distance to Helsinki is only 90 km. It is easy
to commute to workplaces in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area and the area is also ideal for
those working from home.
Hirvikallio in Halikko is a beautiful area that's great for every member of the family services and hobbies are easily available at the centre of Halikko and the centre of Salo is
easy to reach as well. From Hirvikallio it is also easy to go west - for example, if you need to
travel to Turku for work, the distance is about 50 kilometres.
