MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra’s (WSO) 2013-14 season will be remembered as the
year the orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall. This project was the focus of so much
community goodwill, excitement, and exceptional efforts on the part of WSO staff and
musicians. The benefits of participation in the Spring For Music Festival were significant.
The recognition that this project garnered for the WSO in the local community and in the
broader international music community were important on a reputational and relational
basis. The selection for participation in this prestigious festival and the opportunity to
perform Canadian works on the stage of Carnegie Hall were a recognition of the
importance of the work we do in Winnipeg to explore new programs, composers, and
formats. The wonderful community support and excitement around the project confirmed
and displayed the pride Manitobans feels for their orchestra. The hundreds of Manitobans who were at Carnegie
Hall on May 8, 2014 will remember the pride and pleasure of that evening for many years to come. The project
was a success financially as well, and that is an achievement worth celebrating.
Besides the activity and excitement around the Carnegie Hall project, the WSO also accomplished many important
tasks on a local and institutional level. For the board of directors, this was a year of consideration and discussion
regarding an up-dated strategic plan for the WSO. The new plan was adopted in March 2014, and it builds on the
successes of the 2008 to 2013 plan. The governance committee continued its work on board governance policies
that follow up on last year’s revision of the WSO By-laws.
As an organization, we are pleased to report the seventh consecutive operating surplus for the WSO. This gradual
increase in the financial stability of the organization continues to be a significant focus and concern of the board
and staff of the WSO. We know that the benefits of fiscal health create a framework for the impact the organization
can have in the community through its performance programs and outreach activities. Sistema Winnipeg continues
to make a connection with youth in the Elwick and King Edward schools. The program has completed its third year
of operations, and the impact of 15 hours a week of participation in the program is making a difference in lives of
the participants and their families. We have been pleased to continue our partnership with the Manitoba Opera and
Royal Winnipeg Ballet as well as participate in national and local collaborative initiatives.
I thank my fellow board members for their work and contribution to the health and development of the Winnipeg
Symphony Orchestra. Dorothy Dobbie and Muriel Smith will be retiring from the board at the end of this season.
During their eight years of service to the WSO board, they have both contributed significantly to the gradual
improvement in the finances and operations of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. We thank them for their
dedicated support of the WSO and recognize that they have left the WSO stronger and more resilient than they
found it eight years ago.

WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season I 4
I thank the staff of the WSO for the hard work and great spirit of
collaboration, the board for its commitment and dedication to the
WSO, and the WSO musicians for providing so many moments of
wonder and beauty for all of us to enjoy.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Photo: Nardella Photography Inc.
This is a year that feels like a turning point for the WSO in many ways. We have achieved
many strategic goals that have been part of our thinking and planning for the past six
years, and we built on the successes of those years in crafting the strategic plan that will
take us to 2020. With a commitment to musical excellence and programs and initiatives
that are deeply engaged with the people and institutions of our home community, we
know that there is a bright future ahead for the WSO. In fulfilling our mission and
working toward our vision of an institution that serves its community with excellence and
commitment, while also building its reputation on an international level, we have a
complex and challenging road into the future. The plan for the way forward is ambitious,
but there is a sense that Manitoba is entering an exciting and productive period of
growth.
No one involved with the WSO this year will forget the wonderful feeling of pride as the WSO musicians walked
onto the stage of Carnegie Hall. With red scarves waving, the hundreds of WSO supporters from Winnipeg made
the experience many times more exciting and memorable. New Yorkers were very impressed with the community
spirit and support that the WSO provided for its orchestra. We made a mark artistically and we made a mark as
Manitobans. When a project meets its artistic goals, its financial goals, its community goals, and is also great fun,
we know we have succeeded.
I thank the staff of the WSO for the hard work and great spirit of collaboration, the board for its commitment
and dedication to the WSO, and the WSO musicians for providing so many moments of wonder and beauty for
all of us to enjoy. This year, the WSO celebrates the careers and contributions of three WSO musicians: Raymond
Chrunyk, violin; Boyd MacKenzie, violin; and Zdzislaw Prochownik, bass. We also are very sorry to lose the energy
and talents of Lisa Abram, the WSO’s director of marketing and communications for the past five years. We wish
her well as she moves to Victoria, and we know that she will make an excellent contribution to the community
there. We also thank Sarah Lund, Jason Hayes, Amanda Wilson and Andrea de Haan for their work at the WSO.
We wish you all much joy and good fortune in the coming years.
Our 66th season has passed in a blur of activity, energy and musical exploration. For our loyal audience
members, our volunteers, our donors, our sponsors, our Women’s Committee, our staff, our musicians and our
board, I have to say thank you for the difference you have made here. The WSO serves its community with pride
and pleasure, and the community has demonstrated so much affection for its orchestra. I believe that the WSO is
leading the way for orchestral and community collaboration, and this will be our biggest strength moving
forward.

MESSAGE FROM THE MUSIC DIRECTOR
Photo: Nardella Photography Inc.
Our 2013-2014 season will always count as one of the most historic and special in the life
of this organization because of our concert at Carnegie Hall.
We started out the season with the return of two international stars: André Laplante playing the
powerful Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3 and James Ehnes performing Khachaturian’s
Violin Concerto, not quite as known as the Rachmaninoff, yet an absolute gem.
It was the first year that we created a new festival based on the Russian composer
Tchaikovsky with several partnerships and Winnipeg collaborations.
For me personally, in November and December we performed two very special concerts,
Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 (Jupiter) and Handel's Messiah. Both interpretations were
historically informed with beautiful results. Both programs featured quite young soloists or singers: 12-year-old Umi
Garrett played a refreshing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Messiah was served dramatically well by four young
voices and the University of Manitoba Singers, brilliantly prepared by Elroy Friesen.
In our New Music Festival last season we explored the ‘Beyond’ in every aspect. From the spiritual music of Arvo
Pärt and Valentin Silvestrov to the most extreme sound worlds of Glenn Branca to the cutting edge of a new work
by Phil Kline and Jim Jarmusch, it really got people talking. The Hilliard Ensemble performed as part of their
worldwide farewell tour.
And then two more highlights, this time of the most romantic repertoire: Bruckner's majestic Symphony No. 8
and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4.
Several audience members wrote this year about the quality of the orchestra’s playing, from Baroque to the classics
and the romantics to contemporary. The playing this season was exceptional.
Our guest conductors, Aziz Shokhakimov, José Gomez and Marc Piollet, added a nice dose of spice and colours.
Our Carnegie program by three living Canadian composers Derek Charke, Vincent Ho and R. Murray Schafer was
a statement for Canada and signified the place this orchestra has in this country. The performance in New York
was something that I will never forget.
Other highlights from our Pops series included the descent of Hollywood through George Takei and Babelsberg
through Fritz Lang's Metropolis. We had lots of fun with Natalie MacMaster, Lindi Ortega, James Bond, Manitoba
Rocks! and the Peking Acrobats.
I want to thank everyone in administration and the board for this outstanding season.
Alexander Mickelthwate
Music Director
WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season I 6
Music from James Bond classic movies, four great Manitoba
rock bands with our orchestra plus the awe-inspiring Peking
Acrobats completed our pops offerings.
2013-2014 SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
Alexander’s eighth full season as music director continued
to display our orchestra’s stimulating programming of wellknown masterworks and new discoveries to excite WSO
audiences, capped off with a historic return to Carnegie
Hall in May.
A broad sampling of the core symphonic literature in the
Masterworks series was highlighted. Our exciting Canadianfocused program performed at Carnegie Hall was also
presented in our Masterworks series: the orchestra’s first-ever
performance of R. Murray Schafer’s Symphony No. 1,
composer-in-residence Vincent Ho’s The Shaman – with Dame
Evelyn Glennie as percussion soloist, and Derek Charke’s
Thirteen Inuit Throat Song Games. More about Carnegie later.
A much-anticipated performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8
was a season highlight (what magnificent brass playing!), as
was our fall Tchaikovsky Festival that included the composer’s
Fourth and Sixth Symphonies, his second piano concerto,
Rococo Variations, plus a week of Tchaikovsky-based chamber
music, discussions and film. The theme/composer-based
festival concept holds much
promise going forward.
Other Masterworks programs included Holst’s everpopular The Planets, Mahler’s Fourth Symphony plus
other symphonies by Brahms, Mozart and Beethoven.
A special treat was Schumann’s rarely heard
Konzertstück for four horns and orchestra, brilliantly
played by WSO hornists Patricia Evans, Ken
MacDonald, Caroline Oberheu and Michiko Singh.
Guest conductors included the exciting young
Russian Aziz Shokhakimov, from France Marc Piollet
and Venezuelan-born José Luis Gomez, who started
his rising career as a young musician in his country’s
celebrated El Sistema program.
Our choral programs featured Verdi’s Requiem plus
Handel’s Messiah, both with stellar groups of soloists,
large audiences and ovations that always accompany
these two masterworks whenever they are performed.
In his first season as resident conductor, Julian
Pellicano took charge of a wide variety of programs,
winning audiences and musicians alike with his
excellent musicianship and engaging personality.
Julian led a splendid performance of Gottfried
Huppert’s massive score alongside the Fritz Lang
classic science fiction film Metropolis, truly a season
highlight in our SoundBytes series.
A fine collection of guest soloists appeared
throughout the Masterworks series.
Especially notable were performances by pianists
André Laplante in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3,
the young star Umi Garrett in Chopin’s Piano
Concerto No. 1 and violinists James Ehnes and
Augustin Hadelich in the concertos of Khachaturian
and Mendelssohn respectively.

Our choral offerings continued in strong fashion
with contributions from three major Manitoba
choral institutions: the Mennonite Festival Chorus,
the Winnipeg Singers, the University of Manitoba
Singers, the Canadian Mennonite University Chorus
and the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir.

Our theme-based SoundBytes series entered its fourth
season with typically eclectic programs. This threeconcert series offered a stimulating product mix for
both new and seasoned listeners. A gala Christmas
program opened the series to a sold-out audience. The
Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s acclaimed and
enlightening Beyond the Score© presentation of
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition attracted another
large audience. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis closed
SoundBytes, the orchestra performing Gottfried
Huppertz’s rarely heard and vivid score live to a
screening of the classic movie.
Our Air Canada Pops season offered a wide mix of
music and styles for all to enjoy. Star Trek legend
George Takei and guest conductor Jack Everly kicked
the series off with a lively show devoted to music from
science fiction classics. The shadow artistry of Le Ombré
displayed itself in its premiere show with orchestra, not
only presented but co-created with our orchestra, as
was our February pops concerts with rising country star
Lindi Ortega. Fiddling sensation Natalie MacMaster
wowed audiences as she always does. Music from James
Bond classic movies, four great Manitoba rock bands
with our orchestra plus the awe-inspiring Peking
Acrobats completed our pops offerings.
Our outreach department was especially busy in the
2013-14 Season. In early October, Alexander and the
orchestra visited seven high schools throughout the city
in the aptly titled Up Close and Orchestral series,
promoting the season and filling the various gyms and
auditoriums with great music. Similarly, our Adventures
in Music series in March and April brought
approximately 15,000 elementary school students to the
concert hall for a highly successful concert that
featured dancers, singers, entertainers and plenty of
symphonic inspiration from our musicians.
Our Great-West Life Concerts for Kids series again proved
highly successful, both in the lively programs and
engaging pre-concert activities. Percussion virtuoso
Vern Griffiths opened the season. Veteran Canadian
writer/storyteller Roch Carrier presented his classic
story The Hockey Sweater to music by Abigail
Richardson-Schulte. Ever-popular host Mr. Mark
(Mark Cameron) delivered a rousing program
partnered by WSO mascot Manny Tuba.
Philadelphia’s Enchantment Theatre Company
appeared in a musically and visually arresting show
entitled The Firebird.
Once again, Winnipeg new music-lovers’ hearts and
souls were warmed in the middle of our cold winter
by the 2014 New Music Festival.
Co-curated by Alexander Mickelthwate and Matthew
Patton, this year’s Festival was entitled Beyond.
Opening with an appearance by Britain’s famed
Hilliard Ensemble, as part of their farewell tour, the
Festival included music by Arvo Pärt, Pierre Boulez,
Max Richter, Valentin Silvestrov plus a host of pre-and
post-concert performances, speakers and activities,
with an exciting new
partnership from
Toronto’s Spur Festival.
The 125th anniversary
of Gimli’s Icelandic
Festival was
commemorated with a
commission of a work
by Valgeir Sigurdsson.
The Pop Nuit portion
of NMF proved as
popular as ever, the
young audiences
showing their pleasure
post-concert.

The Bach to School program, made up of ten ensemble groups
of the WSO – string, woodwind, brass and percussion – visited
more than 60 schools across Manitoba. This program reached
over 14,000 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8.
ARTISTIC AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS
The orchestra continued to forge artistic connections
with the community in several notable partnerships.
The ongoing success of the WSO’s annual
collaboration with the River East Transcona School
Division was again in evidence in the 10th anniversary
celebration at the Centennial Concert Hall.
The WSO’s annual MTS Rising Stars concert was held
in May and featured honour bands of a variety of
levels from the Manitoba Band Association. The
WSO’s first-ever partnership with Winnipeg’s Filipino
community took place in May in a concert with the
renowned vocalist Pilita Corrales, a program the WSO
co-created with Ms. Corrales’s artistic staff.
The fifth biennial Doris McLellan Competition for
Solo Performance with our orchestra is one of our
most valued partnerships. Created with the Women’s
Musical Club in 2006, this year’s final round was
presented in April and featured an outstanding trio of
Manitoba soloists performing with the WSO. Violinist
Joshua Peters was awarded the $10,000 first prize.
The second triennial International Cello Festival
presented in partnership with the Agassiz Festival saw
our orchestra performing at the closing concert with a
splendid group of internationally recognized soloists.
This exciting event holds much promise going forward.
The longstanding highly successful Virtuosi Concert
series continued its partnership with the WSO at the
University of Winnipeg’s Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall. A
program of works for piano and chamber ensemble
was presented, featuring soloist Sheng Cai. We look
forward to an ongoing relationship with the University
of Winnipeg in presenting stimulating, theme-based
programs for Virtuosi.
Partnering with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir
within its series, our musicians appeared in a special
performance of Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor at
St. Boniface Cathedral in March.
Summer appearances found the WSO performing at the
Lyric Theatre in Assiniboine Park, The Forks on Canada
Day, Central Park stage and its annual appearance at
Kenora’s new dockside Lucia Melnick Stage.
The WSO continues to serve as the musical
foundation for the Manitoba Opera and the Royal
Winnipeg Ballet, bringing to their audiences the full
symphonic resources their productions require.
EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS
The WSO’s exciting and innovative education
programs were presented to more than 35,000 students
during the 2013-14 season. Reaching students from
across Manitoba, these programs introduce orchestral
music and instruments in an engaging and educational
way. These programs offer a “backstage door” approach
that creates opportunities for students and community
members to truly engage in the life and music of a
symphony orchestra.
• Creating personal connections and meaningful
experiences with WSO musicians and conductors,
and the music of our orchestra.
The four key areas of the WSO’s education and
outreach programs are:
• Providing opportunities for Manitobans to make
music, listen to music and learn about music in
connection with the WSO.
• Being a resource to our community on many levels
including great music-making, music listening,
educational resources, innovative ideas and
programming. We want to be the ‘go-to’ place when
people think of excellent music and programs.
9 I WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season
• Presenting programming that supports continuous
learning so that patrons of all ages have multiple
touch-points with the WSO as a young person and
into adulthood, and therefore a long-term
connection to the WSO.

Education Programs
Early in the fall, the full orchestra visited seven high
schools with the Up Close and Orchestral program. Led by
music director Alexander Mickelthwate, this program
featured a variety of music, from Shostakovich’s Festive
Overture to the theme from Mission Impossible. More
than 4,000 students across Winnipeg received a rare
opportunity to meet the WSO and experience an “up close
and personal” orchestra performance in their school. As
part of the WSO’s annual student competition, these
concerts featured 16-year-old student marimba player
Claire Ploughman performing Rosauro’s Concert No. 1 for
Marimba and Orchestra. Two students from each school
were invited to perform the canon part on bass drums as
part of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. One lucky student at
each concert received their debut by conducting Rossini’s
Barber of Seville with the WSO. All the high school students
were invited to attend the opening night of the WSO’s
Tchaikovsky Festival on October 25, 2013. More than 300
students enjoyed this concert at no cost.
Destination WSO brings students directly into the
Masterworks concert experience via an open dress
rehearsal. School groups can also book tours, attend
concerts at discounted prices, or participate in sectional
clinics and masterclasses with WSO musicians. In total,
more than 650 junior high and high school students and
chaperones, from five different Manitoba communities
attended these rehearsals. Several of these schools attended
evening concerts at discounted rates, and two schools
booked clinics and sectionals with WSO musicians. Music
director Alexander Mickelthwate hosted the rehearsals and
participated in a Q&A session with the students.
The Bach to School program, made up of ten ensemble
groups of the WSO – string, woodwind, brass and
percussion – visited more than 60 schools across
Manitoba. This program reached over 14,000 students
from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Continuing on the success
of the French ensemble pilot program in 2012-13, the
French group was formally made a part of the Bach to
School program and was able to reach into Francophone
and Immersion schools. In addition, WSO horn player
Michiko Singh visited five high schools to work with and
perform for band students as part of this program. This
program has a strong reach to many communities
including rural, inner city, junior high and high
schools covering 12 school divisions.
The Nursery Notes program is an innovative
program designed to reach pre-school aged
children. A string ensemble group from the WSO
shared presentations in 12 different nursery schools
across Winnipeg. More than 285 children connected
with the music and instruments through interactive
activities, learning about colours and working
together. The WSO also partners with the River East
Transcona School Division each year to present this
program as part of their nursery school classes.
The WSO presented the fifth year of the Musical
Discoveries program for Grades 1-3 students. This
series presents three concerts with 4,788 students
attending. This program continues to grow in
attendance each year. This year’s program, Manny
Tuba’s Musical Treasure Hunt joined WSO mascot
Manny Tuba and children’s entertainer Mr. Mark as
they explored the musical treasures inside the
orchestra. For the first time in an education concert,
the WSO brought the music to life by using a live
video-feed for the students to see the instruments and
musicians performing up close on the screen during
the concert. Teachers received a curriculum-based
Study Guide that included lesson plans to teach
children about the music and prepare them to attend.
Adventures in Music, the WSO’s largest education
program, presented eight concerts in March and
April. More than 13,000 elementary schools students
attended this program. “Raiders of the Lost Art”
brought students through a journey through the art
gallery of great music featuring excerpts of
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, John Williams’s
Raiders of the Lost Ark, Flight to Neverland, and more.
Led by resident conductor Julian Pellicano, these
concerts included more than 400 students
performing on stage in movement, recorder and
string groups. These concerts also featured student
artwork during the performance of Mussorgsky’s The
Old Castle.
WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season I 10
The highlight of the year was on the WSO’s Season Opener
Concert on September 20 th, when all 100 Sistema Winnipeg
students joined the WSO on stage to perform the famous
tune ‘Ode to Joy’ by Beethoven.
Education Programs (Cont.)
Prior to each Concerts for Kids concert, the WSO
presents an hour of pre-concert activities for children
ages 4-9. In partnership with Music for Young
Children, these activities can include a craft station,
rhythm ensembles, an instrument petting zoo, and a
conducting station. WSO mascot Manny Tuba
attended each concert, inviting children to learn about
music, pose for pictures, and bring their friends.
In partnership with the University of Manitoba Marcel
A. Desautels Faculty of Music, WSO musicians attend
University of Manitoba Symphony Orchestra
rehearsals. This Mentorship Program provides the
opportunity for young university orchestra students to
be mentored by professional orchestra musicians.
Nineteen WSO musicians participated in the
rehearsals to offer technical expertise, suggestions for
rehearsing excerpts, and demonstrate leadership skills.
The Apprenticeship Program provides string players
currently enrolled in a Master of Music program or in
a performance degree at the undergraduate level at
the University of Manitoba the opportunity to rehearse
and perform as an orchestral musician with the WSO.
They learn about preparing for orchestra auditions and
rehearsals, performing with an orchestra and making
connections to prepare them for a professional career
in music. This year, one cellist and one bassist
participated by performing in the Adventures in Music
program. They also gave a 30-minute presentation to
two schools as part of their professional development.
For the third year, the WSO partnered with the National
Arts Centre Orchestra to present the Music Alive
Program, which aims to support and inspire musical
learning in schools. WSO horn player Ken MacDonald
travelled with aboriginal musician and composer
Andrew Balfour to three remote rural communities to
work with students in each school. The musicians spent
a full day each at Waterhen School, Skownan School,
and Minegoziibe Anishinabe School, connecting with
the students and making music together.
Outreach Programs
The WSO is committed to being an integral part of
our community and bringing orchestral music to new
audiences.
Culture Days took place across the country on the
weekend of September 27-29, 2013. The WSO held an
event on September 28 in partnership with the
Manitoba Opera, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the
Centennial Concert Hall and Music for Young Children.
This included an open house at the Centennial Concert
Hall, with tours, a chance to pick your seat,
performances by the Manitoba Opera and Music for
Young Children, and child-friendly music activities.
The WSO and the River East Transcona School Division
presented a special community concert at the
Centennial Concert Hall on October 29, 2013. Building
on the success of previous years, these concerts
showcased more than 575 students from the division
who performed with the WSO in one of three divisional
choirs, a recorder ensemble, or a guitar ensemble.
11 I WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season
The concert also featured student involvement through
various visual arts components. This is a very special
partnership that engages many students, teachers,
administration and superintendents from the division.
The Musicians in Healthcare program offered musical
presentations by a WSO string quartet and a musical
duo featuring WSO principal harpist Richard Turner
and flutist Laura MacDougall at various healthcare
centres across Winnipeg. Using live music, this
program promotes the health and healing of hospital
patients, visitors and staff in the community.
Share the Music is a unique partnership with
community organizations that enables economically
disadvantaged children, their families and adults to
attend WSO performances. Because of the generous
donations by corporations and individuals, more
than 2,000, were provided across the Province this
season. The organizations distribute tickets free of
charge to people who want to hear our orchestra.

Outreach Programs (Cont.)
Through the Musicians in the Making program, the
WSO provided performance opportunities for young
musicians in our community. This season, numerous
school groups and students performed in the Piano
Nobile Level prior to each Pops and SoundBytes
concert throughout the season.
The Soundcheck program offers young people ages 30
and under the opportunity to attend WSO concerts all
season for only $15 per concert. In the 2013-14 season,
the Soundcheck membership reached almost 2,500
people. The program kicked off the year on September
20 with a large event called Dust off the Dress. More than
140 young people came dressed in their best attire to
celebrate the launch of the WSO season and mingle with
WSO musicians and the music director. The event was
complete with a fashion show presented by local store
Rockabetty. This year, the Soundcheck program hosted
its first ever event in Brandon – a pre-concert Coffee,
Dessert and Music, where members met Resident
Conductor Julian Pellicano as he presented a chat
about the Four Horns & Beethoven concert. The
Soundcheck program also hosted a post-concert
Casino Royale event – a Symphonic tribute to 50
Years of 007 as the Piano Nobile level was
transformed into a casino.
For the fifth time, the WSO presented the MTS
Rising Stars concert, bringing together some of the
most talented students in Manitoba. This year the
WSO partnered with the Manitoba Band Association
to present a program featuring all three provincial
honour bands performing with the WSO. The
concert also featured student soloist Heather
Jonasson on flute. More than 200 students
performed side-by-side with WSO musicians.
SISTEMA WINNIPEG
Sistema Winnipeg continued strongly in its third year with
100 students participating daily from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.
This program is a partnership with the Seven Oaks School
Division and the Winnipeg School Division and seeks to
promote social changes through music in an intensive
group-based orchestral environment that inspires and
supports students in achieving their full potential. The
program values inclusion and accessibility, artistic
excellence, community building and mentorship in
achieving its goals.

In addition to the violin, viola and cello ensembles,
the program launched the double bass sectional to fill
out the string section of the orchestra. The students
performed more than 30 times in the community at
various events and functions, as well as presented their
own concert with all 100 students in November and
May to audiences of more than 250 people including
parents, supporters and community members.
The highlight of the year was on the WSO’s Season
Opener concert on September 20th, when all 100
students joined the WSO on stage to perform the
famous tune Ode to Joy by Beethoven. It was a
moving performance with a standing ovation from
the Masterworks audience.
In addition, former Manitoba Arts Council chair and
Sistema Winnipeg volunteer Judith Flynn gave 10
presentations to rotary clubs and retirement
homes in Winnipeg in order to increase
awareness in the community and to assist
with fundraising efforts of the program.
Her energy, time and support are truly
a gift to this program.
WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season I 12
The jewel in the season’s crown was the orchestra’s performance
in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall on May 8th.
BEYOND THE PERIMETER – TOUR REPORT
The WSO regularly packs up instruments and
musicians and heads out on the open road to take
the full orchestra to communities throughout the
province and beyond. Our regular concert series in
Brandon presented a wide range of musical offerings,
as we have done, four times per season, ensuring that
music lovers in the Western regions of Manitoba can
experience the wonder of live symphonic music.
Summer of 2014 found the WSO appearing in
Kenora, the large audience enjoying a lovely summer
evening’s program of music dockside.
December was especially busy, as the orchestra
embarked on its Power Smart Holiday Express Tour with
family-focused holiday concerts in Steinbach, Baker
Colony, Winkler and Portage la Prairie.
Thanks to the Richardson Foundation, the WSO’s
Adventures in Music education series saw May
performances in Brandon. Approximately 1,500
elementary students were in attendance. This program
works closely with the school divisions to provide
musical content and preparation for the students so that
they find the programs stimulating and memorable.
The WSO continues to connect with rural schools
through the Bach to School program. Each year a group
of five musicians visit five schools in small communities
introducing more than 1,500 students in Grades 1-8 to
live music.
As always, the WSO continues to explore touring
opportunities in Manitoba to ensure that all
Manitobans may regard the orchestra as their own.
Carnegie Hall
The jewel in the season’s crown was the orchestra’s
performance in New York City’s famed Carnegie Hall
on May 8th. Our orchestra was chosen as one of six
from 32 orchestras that applied to appear at the
week-long Spring For Music Festival, the final time
this annual festival devoted to innovative
programming was to take place.
Over 800 Manitobans travelled to the “big apple” to
hear and cheer the WSO on in an all Canadian
program of music by R. Murray Schafer and our own
composer-in-residence Vincent Ho, whose percussion
concerto The Shaman brought the house down in a
vivid performance by Dame Evelyn Glennie, the
world’s most renowned percussion soloist. Derek
Charke’s Thirteen Inuit Throat Song Games featured
renowned throat singer Tanya Tagaq.
The reviews were highly positive. James Oestreich in
the New York Times called Vincent’s piece “brilliant
and compelling” and Alexander “conducted
expertly.” Following the concert, the large audience,
dignitaries and musicians celebrated at New York’s
legendary Russian Tea Room.
All of this could not have taken place without the
tremendous efforts of the WSO staff, the
development team in particular: Joanne
Gudmundson, Carol Cassels, Jason Hayes and all the
other staff that assisted them. Every musician was
“adopted” by enthusiastic patrons and supporters.
No doubt the WSO’s star rose considerably from this
memorable event which was an unqualified success
on all fronts.

2014 NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL
This year’s New Music Festival (NMF) was another
exciting event that pushed the boundaries of creative
thinking. As this year’s theme suggests, “Beyond,” it
was a weeklong event devoted to exploring music
that lays outside the academic realm. This creative
vision, spearheaded by co-curators Alexander
Mickelthwate and Matthew Patton, led to the
creation of a program that featured many innovative
artists of varying genres: Jim Jarmusch, Venetian
Snares, Owen Pallett, etc. As a result, this year’s
NMF programming enabled us to reach new
audiences of various demographics, many of whom
have never attended our event before, and saw the
creation of many new partnerships.
The initial vision was to showcase these two streams
of thought and to see how they are being expressed
today. The opening concert presented this thesis
with two works by composers representing these two
musical worlds – Pierre Boulez (who was deeply
rooted in the contemporary philosophies of Europe)
and Frank Zappa (who began breaking down the
barriers between the pop/rock and classical
contemporary world). From there on, the rest of the
week showcased music by composers who
represented similar contrasts. Using Frank Zappa as
one model, we were proud to feature composers who
represented his philosophical thinking:
• Owen Pallett (CAN) – Canadian
singer/songwriter who is now making a name for
himself as an orchestral composer (Violin Concerto).
• Jonny Greenwood (UK) – Member of the UK
band Radiohead, who now has established
himself as a major contemporary classical
composer.
• Mychael Danna (CAN) – Hollywood film
composer.
• Eyvind Kang and Jessika Kenney (CAN/USA) –
Experimental composers/performers.
• Venetian Snares (CAN) – Electronic sound artist.
• Glenn Branca (USA) – Avant-garde composer
and guitarist known for his use of volume,
alternative guitar tunings, repetition, harmonic
series.
This collection of artists allowed us to reach a new
demographic audience that was new to our Festival.
They represented an “underground” scene that has
existed for many years and are only now being
connected to our annual event.
As the counterpoint to this, programmed alongside
these works was music by composers who
represented the current contemporary new music
scene:
• Pierre Boulez (FR)
• Arvo Pärt (EE)
• Valentin Silvestrov (UA)
• Max Richter (UK)
• Gavin Bryars (UK)
In addition, we were proud to present as our guest
artists the world-renowned Hilliard Ensemble. Their
participation at our Festival reinforced our position
as a world-class event that features critically
acclaimed artists.
This year, we continued our new Pop Nuit series
that consisted of two post-concert performances by
artists from the pop/rock genre. Curator Matt
Schellenberg successfully brought together a
collection of artists whose music explores the
boundaries between pop and experimentalism:
Colin Stetson, Venetian Snares, Mahogany Frog,
and Hannah Epperson. The music they presented
represented the latest developments and
experiments being made today from within their
musical sphere. Being that this new series was
highly successful with the local youths, we held
these events at larger venues this year that caters to
this demographic of audience while expanding its
marketing campaign. The two concerts were sold
out and brought in a record-number of listeners.
Thus, our Festival had created many opportunities
for our local artists whose artistic practice lie
beyond musical categorizations. In other words, we
had brought cutting edge artistic developments to
our receptive audience while serving the needs of

the artists, which thereby nurtures the
health of our creative community. This
is one of the fundamental ways of
ensuring the growth of our musical
culture.
In addition, we have maintained our
commitment to our outreach programs.
One of our mandates is to showcase
many of these ensembles at our New
Music Festival by way of performance
opportunities. They play an important
component to our event and have
always added to the Festival experience
while enriching our local music scene.
This year we were proud to feature a
concert that showcased many of the
student and local wind ensembles.
Ensembles featured were: the Brandon
University New Music Ensemble, The
University of Manitoba Wind
Ensemble, The University of Manitoba
Flute Ensemble, and The Winnipeg
Wind Ensemble. As a result, our
outreach events were all very successful
and had brought in a large number of
audiences and participating artists.
In conclusion, this year’s NMF
programming pushed the creative
boundaries further than ever before.
By committing ourselves to a theme
that highlights artists and music that
lie beyond the concert classical realm,
we successfully maintained our
“thinking-outside-of-the-box” philosophy, which
has been the foundation of our creative process.
Thus, we brought in many new audiences while
continuing our role as a voice for the Canadian
and international music community.

WSO Annual Report – 2 013-2014 Season I 28
Our Carnegie program by three living Canadian composers Derek
Charke, Vincent Ho and R. Murray Schafer was a statement for
Canada and signified the place this orchestra has in this country.
The performance in New York was something that I will never forget.
