About Roscoe:
Our program cover is taken from a poster designed by Hannah Devine
and Jacob Friedman, students in Churchill High School’s advanced
graphics arts class, taught by Ms. Amy Gilbert. (JazzFest Producer
Bruce Krohmer also teaches at Churchill.) Hannah and Jacob are this
year’s winners of an annual contest to design the main festival poster
and t-shirt image.
Our 2016 JazzFest theme is “Jazz in the Community,” so students
were encouraged to find out about life in Takoma Park. A key theme of
the image is the rising sun in the Takoma Park city logo. The other
central theme is Roscoe the Rooster. Roscoe was our city mascot: a
totally free ranging resident, disliked by some for his early morning
wake-up crowing. He lived for ten years, ruling the city, until his untimely demise by a hit and run driver in 1999. He is immortalized by the
bronze statue in front of the Takoma Park clock tower on Laurel Avenue, located near our JazzFest booth (#100),

The Takoma Park Middle School Jazz Ensemble has appeared on the JazzFest stage several
times. They are an all volunteer group, practicing on their own time with their teacher, Holly Pasquale, who
also volunteers her time to lead them. Her mastery of teaching music, especially jazz, is apparent in every
note they play.
2:40
The Not So Modern Jazz Quartet has been together since 1983,playing the best of 20's, 30's,
and 40's jazz. The group members are: Mike Ritter (leader, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano sax); Herb
Greenlee, (piano); Steve Watson (drums); and Paul Mastradon (bass).
3:50
The Greater U-Street Collective has been a mainstay of straight ahead jazz in the Takoma Park
area for years. They are:Thomas View, (bass and leader), who has played or produced with such a-list
groups as Peter Yarrow, Anthony Braxton and the Sun Ra Arkestra; Russell Carter Sr. (tenor soprano sax)
has dedicated much of his life teaching youngsters at the D. C. Music Center, where he also is Executive
Director; drummer Art Cobb is a National Endowment for the Arts fellow and has extensive experience
playing drums in various settings around the world; Peter Frassrand (piano) is a veteran music educator,
passionate about introducing jazz to his students; Carl McIntyre ( trumpet and flugelhorn) has also played

of artists who live in Takoma Park (or really close by). Harry Appelman (keyboards) plays in many great
area bands; his main group is the Grammy-winning Afro-Bop Alliance. David Jernigan (bass) plays with
numerous top jazz groups, and teaches bass and performance techniques. Lex O’Brien (vibes) has been a
Takoma resident for decades; he plays drums with 2015 Takoma Park JazzBand Brawl winner Brulee, and

12:10 The Silver Spring International Middle School Jazz Ensemble is another example of how
jazz is nurtured and celebrated in the community. Director Tim Dawson plays jazz trumpet, but his
main contribution to jazz is infusing his young students with a love of jazz.
1:20

last several decades. His home is Takoma Park, where he plays locally with the THP. The members

About Us: We’re a local organization that brings live jazz in its traditional and more
modern forms to suburban Maryland and DC. Every June we host an all-day festival on the streets of Old Town Takoma Park, Maryland. The Fest has two stages,
featuring local and nationally known performers, as well as food and arts/crafts
vendors. This is a FREE family friendly event. In February we host the JazzBand
Brawl: a competition among up-and-coming local bands to win a showcase set at
the June Fest, plus a stipend. You can see JazzFest performances from previous
years on Takoma Park TV: channel 13 on Comcast and RCN; 28 on Verizon. Our
videos have also been posted on youtube.

Finding Live Jazz in Takoma Park
There are several jazz venues in Takoma Park and Takoma DC:

The most venerable local venue is Takoma Station (6914 4th St NW., Washington, DC
20012; 202-829-1999), which features live jazz three times per week.

BusBoys & Poets (235 Carroll St NW. Washington, DC 20012; 202-726-0856) has a monthly “Jazz and Poetry” open mic, plus many other jazz performances.

Takoma Republic (6939 Laurel Ave, Takoma Park, MD 20912; 301-270-3000) has hosted
several fundraisers for JazzFest, and sponsors the official JazzFest after-party. You’ll find
live jazz at Takoma Republic throughout the week.
JazzFest Film Series at AFI:
JazzFest is honored to partner with the American Film Institute to show
a series of jazz-themed films in the days leading up to the festival. This
year’s films were:
 "Jazz on a Summers Day", documenting the astonishing performances at the 1958 Newport News Jazz Festival. The Tuesday
June 7 showing featured an introduction by Takoma Park’s own
Chuck Redd; it also showed Thursday June 9.
 Sun Ra's “Space is the Place” was shown on Monday June 6 and
Thursday June 9, with an introduction by WPFW radio host Brother
Ah.
 “All Night Long,” which transports “Othello” to the London jazz
scene, was shown on Tuesday June 7 and Wednesday June 8.
