2. Foy’s Supreme Table Water, Melbourne. Aqua Dobson style
patent with four dimples. This 13 ounce codd bottle stands at 237
mm tall. We have graded this bottle as Very Good, it has been
oiled internally, still has a light haze, there is a base chip from a fork
impact, some scuffs, scratches and fisheyes, and minor crate
wear to shoulder. It is pretty much a standard dug bottle that
had been used for a while, except it has the base chip. Our
numerical grading for this piece is 7.3.
This codd bottle is an extreme rarity, as far as we know,
this is the only example ever found, there is one with no
top known and this complete example, you cannot get
any rarer than that! With the unique style of writing, this
Melbourne codd bottle is a must for any serious collector
of bottles of this type!
Estimate: $1000-1250.
53. W. Wilce, Sydney, WW monogram trade mark. Applied top
crown seal in a brilliant dark green colour. This 13 ounce crown
seal stands 222 mm tall. We have graded this beauty as
excellent, there is a scratch to outer lip, some light scuffs and
scratches to be found elsewhere, but really only the standard
marks from a bottle that has been in circulation. This bottle is
actually rather heavy for its size as well. Our numerical grading
for this bottle is 8.9.
Crown Seals have been increasing in popularity in recent
years, this particular example is one of the finest around.
For a crown seal it has everything going for it, it is a
particularly early example, it is a fantastic dark green
colour, it has an attractive trade mark and it is extremely
rare. Don’t let this one go, another won’t turn up in a hurry!
Estimate: $500-750.
154. A. Fraser & Son, 122 King Street, Bendigo, Herbal Beer,
Horehound, Dandelion, Non-Intoxicating with a Poppet Head
trade mark. This two tone demijohn was made by Pearson of
Chesterfield who were renowned for their fine manufacture
of demijohns. This One Gallon demijohn stands 340 mm
tall. We have graded this amazing piece as Mint, it has a
glaze flake or two at the shoulder and the odd small mark
elsewhere, the tap is the original and even has the cork
insert still in excellent condition, the original handle and original
wooden top are also in fine condition. Our numerical grading for
this demijohn is an impressive 9.5.
When it comes to demijohns, this example is one of
the rarest and most sought after in Victoria. Of the few
examples that we know of, this is by far the best, it is in
fully original condition with only a few minor marks from
its apparent very limited time in use. Having been
made by Pearson of Chesterfield, it is a fine example of
pottery as well, the spigotted design with the original tap
only adding to the desirability of such a piece.
Estimate: $8000-10000.
158. W. Burrett, T. Field Potter, Sydney. Very early
Sydney Salt Glaze ginger beer. This bottle stands about
150 mm tall. We have graded this bottle as Good, it does
have some extensive lip chipping, mostly on the inside
of the lip, but still some visible from the outside, there
is some light shoulder wear and flakes, chips to the left
of the stamp, some glaze wear and a few base flakes. Although there are issues, apart from the lip chipping
these issues are relatively minor. Our numerical grading
for this bottle is 6.1.
W. Burrett was a cordial maker in Camden in the 1850s1860s. There is a broken example of one of these in a
Sydney museum, and we believe another complete example
may exist? This extremely rare bottle is a great piece of
history, it was very crudely made by T. Field of Sydney with
the internal opening on the top being about 25 mm across!
A Burrett has never been offered for sale, here is your
opportunity to buy an historically important piece!
Estimate: $7000 - 7500.
56. S. M. Ball, Bulli, New South Wales, Bull’s Head TM. This light amethyst 13 ounce crown seal stands about 212
mm tall. We have graded this bottle as Very Good, it has
a tiny rear lip flake, a small flake to front shoulder, a small
impact mark to the bulls nose, some scratches and scuffs. Our numerical grading for this bottle is 7.8.
This is an extremely rare crown seal from the Illawarra
Region of New South Wales. Although it has an offset seam through the lip, this is an early bottle which
has been very crudely made. It has hundreds of seed
bubbles and crude wavy mould marks throughout.
The nice light amethyst colour, the pictorial trade
mark and the rarity make this one of the pinnacles in
crown seal collecting!
Estimate: $400-500.
372. Longmore’s Gold Medal Perfection Cherry Tooth
Paste with Gladiator trade mark. Pink outer writing with
Green trade mark on a white lid. This lid has a diameter
of 78 mm. We have graded this pot lid as Near Mint, at 8
o’clock it has a little black scuff which will be removable,
at 6 o’clock there is some light rusty crazing, there is also
some minor discolouration to rim, apart from these few
minor surface marks, there is not a mark to be seen. Our
numerical grading for this lid is an impressive 9.2.
WOW! What more can be said about this lid? These
are a very rare lid, but to find one in this condition is
impossible - well, nearly impossible! This would
have to rate as one of the finest lids in Australia,
in fact it would rate highly throughout the World!
Multicoloured, finely detailed pictorial trade mark and
exceptionally rare! Don’t miss this one!
Estimate: $5000-6500.

IMPORTANT OFFERING!
ABCR Auctions are pleased to present a great offering of
411 quality lots, with Auction 6 online from October 29th to
November 12th at www.abcrauctions.com
Items across almost every field from low end beginner
type items right through to the top of the range, we truly
do cater for collectors of all sorts.
Amongst some of the important offerings available in
Auction 6 are a selection of early black glass seals. These
historic bottles date to a period when Australia was but
a fledgling English colony. In addition to age the two
examples featured on this page are magnum sized bottles
making them particularly difficult to obtain.
Below is a superb squat shape with strong shoulder seal
reading Gartmore 1802 and a star in the centre of the seal.
The last lot in the auction it is far from the least measuring
240 mm tall and nearly as wide! This bottle is from
Gartmore House in Scotland, located near Loch Lomond
and ancestral home to the Bontine/Graham family. A truly
stunning piece of black glass.
Lot 410 in Auction 6 is an imposing 301
mm tall. The well-struck seal to the mid
body is embossed simply J.Bell. The
style of bottle is synonymous with the
early 1800s and the seal is not listed in
Fay Banks books on English seals. It’s
quite possible that J. Bell may in fact
have been American.
Whatever the origins this is another
exceptional black glass bottle.
